- The use of Robin Williams childlike nature YET AGAIN used as a means of courtship. This time THE PRINCESS BRIDE herself, Robin Wright, is the unfortunate love interest.
- LL COOL J as The Prodigal Son and ALSO The Master of Disguise (shoutout to Dana Carvey.)
- And finally... the white privilege of a robot's chosen diet.

My co-hosts in the past tense only (it's better for present self that way) Jairo and Jared return to the heat check of Rob Reiner's run on film with A FEW GOOD MEN. Among the topics of interest as we attempt to find a new take on this classic:
- The "good vibes only" nature of a Miami sports fan. Any losses go in the memory hole.
- A spirited defense on the decisions of Jack Nicholson in this film.
- Is this the least that Tom Cruise had to exert himself in the history of his roles playing the hero?
All of this as we look forward to Mr. Cruise coming back to save the theatrical box-office once again with next week's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING PART ONE! Even the title reeks of blessed excess.

Really this is just an excuse to revisit the beach volleyball scene again.Peter Veunnasack and Michael Denniston have over a hundred episodes of watching essentially the same movie over again on ORIGINAL REMAKE. But when it's Tom Cruise... they don't complain. Too much. They are just glad that the critical community has embraced repeating one's self (a podcaster's bread and butter) in acknowledging TOP GUN: MAVERICK as the savior of cinema and one of the ten best pictures of 2022. But is it better than the original?
Spoiler: yes.

David Mamet's two guys and a bear movie finally hits podcast syndication.In a conversation that you may have heard before (but hopefully and LIKELY NOT) your favorite podcast host revisits his own odd fascination with bears on film... but isn't that excited for COCAINE BEAR. To bring on even more negative energy Dave Giannini of OFF SCREEN DEATH joins the show to express an equal amount of doubt for what probably will be the new SNAKES ON A PLANE. For good or bad.
However Anthony Hopkins brought the appropriate big bear energy back in 1997 for THE EDGE and Chris Maynard of FOLLOWING FILMS and Shane Conner admit to rewatching this film enough to feel shame. As all should.

We debate art that will survive and end up on THE MEG.Yes, that would be the film starring Jason Statham and a giant shark. I think. I didn't personally watch it but returning guest Web of TRILOGY IN THEORY remains enthusiastic for that franchise. Which means we can now officially dismiss DEEP BLUE SEA from our collective memories which is something already happening with a movie that is just days old in the Peacock Original SICK. Attracted by our second favorite Kevin (next to Smith) known for writing the SCREAM series we quarantine at home with this streaming release and struggle with what we retain amidst our rampant consumption of entertainment.

We didn't see BROS but... ...apparently no one else did either. However the trailers for BROS Presents old comedies from the aughts when comedies were a box-office draw did get us in the mood to look at prior personas of comedians as they were translated to the big screen. In FUNNY PEOPLE Adam Sandler plays a formerly funny person who may be past his prime... which is not much of a stretch. And in TRAINWRECK we are introduced to Amy Schumer playing a woman who self-sabotages...ahem. However along the way we get Eric Bana playing an overbearing Australian football fan and Bill Hader ascending to his rightful place as the romantic lead.

In the 1990 version of THE AMBULANCE (thank you to any of you who stumbled on a clickthrough after watching Michael Bay's AMBULANCE presumably on Peacock) Mr. Roberts works for Stan Lee when not investigating the disappearance of strange women he chases down the street. For twenty-five years both hosts of this widely respected program had managed to avoid Lawrence Kasdan's masterpiece FRENCH KISS. Today this mistake has been corrected with no consideration given by the rights holders as this is strangely a lost film with no current digital distribution. A film that managed to succeed at the box-office and give Meg Ryan a victory over her former costar (the hideous Billy Crystal) for best romcom set in France in May 1995.
And that's something that even Stanley Kubrick couldn't achieve. Think about THAT.

Thanks to the Nashville Film Festival we were able to check out THE SCENT OF RAIN AND LIGHTNING which stars Maika Monroe, a young actress who first got our attention in IT FOLLOWS. Maybe with that on the brain we ended up with an episode theme based around another previous rising star in Jennifer Lawrence and in particular her roles in feuding family films THE BURNING PLAIN and WINTER'S BONE. On the road again with Chris and Mike of PROJECTING FILM. A pair of podcast lovers who fancy themselves as Celine and Jesse from Richard Linklater's BEFORE SUNRISE but in actuality are more like Zoe Bell and Kurt Russell from Quentin Tarantino's DEATH PROOF. We'll leave that up to the listeners which one is the cowardly stuntman... BUT FOR NOW we have yet another indie film gem from 2018 with Ethan Warren's WEST OF HER. A strikingly beautifyl film full of stolen shots and stolen moments also manages to keep its feet on the ground and provide the spark of a romance between two people who travel the country together but are heading in very different directions. For our latest episode we have our own little premiere party for the Netflix original MUDBOUND. This includes watching this Oscar hopeful from the comfort of our homes with at least one of your hosts in a bathrobe. After this sign of disrespect to modern cinema-going we praise the film by comparing it to the likes of DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE DEER HUNTER, for its narrative of returning veterans and also in the how DEE REES uses narration. However this does make us face the stark reality that what this up and coming filmmaker could really use on screen is Richard Gere and his fantastic hair.

Our latest episode spreads the holiday cheer in a way that you never knew you wanted: Michael Shannon in a drunken rage, terrorizing a small town as Bigfoot. This hard to categorize monster movie by way of Hallmark leads us to a discussion on JAWS as not just a scary shark movie but a terrifying look at a small town's insecurity. And the only way to top that is to look at those desparate enough to try and make it in the film business, such as the characters in the Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy comedy classic BOWFINGER. Like most Christmas episodes this leads to a bit of self-reflection from your hosts Mike and Chris... which means that this particular episode is easy to categorize as a tragedy.

For our Halloween episode we look at new documentary 78/52 which is a deep dive into the shower sequence from Alfred Hitchcock's classic PSYCHO. However the biggest win for us is the arrival of a new film from Angus MacLachlan, ABUNDANT ACREAGE AVAILABLE. And while both Chris and Mike agree that it is one of the best films of 2017, they gravitated to two different themes and we explain them in our respective selections of Tamara Jenkins' THE SAVAGES and Gus Van Sant's PROMISED LAND. For our second episode we discuss new release NOBODY'S WATCHING from Argentinian filmmaker Julia Solomonoff. This story of purposeful isolation which complicates creative pursuits not only describes our feeling of starting a new movie podcast after some minor success with a previous show but also inspires just a bit less navelgazing with a discussion on some previous like-minded films. In both Terry Zwigoff's GHOST WORLD and Chrick Rock's TOP FIVE we find lead characters passionate about art but who approach these endeavors with the precision and grace of a sledgehammer. A teenage girl who has just graduated (almost) high school struggles with moving on while still making discoveries in her small town meets a succesfull New York comedian adjusting to being engaged with and commenting on the world sober. Join us as we continue to adjust to this new podcast as we attempt to engage you with current independent cinema by referencing as many movies as we can in 40 minutes!
