As Christians, we are followers of Christ but are our relationships centered around Him as well? Today's guest T. Renee Keys shares her testimony about how her relationship with Christ caused division and strife in her marriage and how that experience helped her learn how to build Christ-centered relationships and start her ministry Encourage Ministry.

T. Renée Keys is the founder of Encourage Ministry. Her marriage was a blessing in the beginning, then life changed. She knew Jesus, but that brought tension in her marriage. Because of her relationship with Christ, it was good and bad. The good part was He gave her strength when the challenges of marriage and life came. The bad part was because I knew and served Jesus I was accused of putting a man (Christ), before my husband. She never viewed Christ as someone to cause division, but no matter how she tried to explain, it was a disagreement. Encourage Ministry was birth from those challenges.

God told her to create Encourage Ministry 2004, she didn’t believe it because was still going through difficulties in her marriage. Twelve years later, she is divorced, has suffered medical conditions, survived Hurricane Harvey, and lost her mom. But God is still a sustainer.

The ministry was officially formed in October 2008 and has grown strong in the community. Currently, they are meeting on Zoom every 2nd Saturday of the month. They have: Ministered at Nursing Home facilities, Prisons, Women Shelters, Organized, and participated in Food/Clothing drives. For the 20/21 school year, they created and passed out face masks, gloves, sanitizer to youth of all ages. Their theme for 2020 was relationships this month. For 2021 the theme is Food for The Soul.

Jacquie McIver is a single mother of Jeremiah, a beautiful Angel Gift given from God to nurture and love. As a former Pastor, it has always been her sincere desire to embrace everyone and help them discover their purpose in life. As an entrepreneur consultant, she helped organizations to exceed their potential. Upon graduating from Arizona State University with an MBA in Service Marketing, she spent several years traveling the world as a management consultant in corporate America with one of the world's top firms: Pricewaterhouse Coopers, LLC.

Jacquie is the visionary of Jeremiah's Voice Inc.; she combined her educational, ministerial, professional, and parenting skills to launch an organization; that she believes will help to aid those who care for and those who live with disabilities. Her belief in transparency, openness, honesty, and your past circumstances does not dictate your future position in life. She stands firmly on the certainty that every human being has a purpose to fulfill. She understands that individuals living with disabilities must have a voice to ensure their needs are met. Have you experienced betrayal? Did someone not live up to your expectations? How do you move beyond this? Today's guest, Kasundra "Dr. K" Brown shares great information about betrayal, what it means, how to deal with the root, and move past the hurt and pain it causes.

Doctor K loves GOD’S Word and building up HIS people. Having done this for 20+ years, she has planned and participated in numerous youth, women’s, and family conferences. Whether one on one or in a group, she passionately educates, edifies, and encourages her audience by teaching and preaching Biblical TRUTH. Her delivery has been described as dynamic, humorous, and real. She strives to “put the cookies on the bottom shelf” so that her listeners can not only hear the Word but do the Word also.

Quick to inform people that she does not possess a doctorate degree in any subject, Doctor K was given the name by the women of a virtual prayer group. When she joined the group, Kasundra was kind of quiet. One day she felt led to participate in the discussion and after sharing, the group leader christened her Doctor K and the name stuck. That group, now known as The Corner Sisters, led to her signature presentation and women’s conference, While W8ting4u I Found Me and the release of her first book, Moving Beyond Betrayal – Help Getting Past What You May Never Get Over.

Since receiving the name, Doctor K has started a virtual Bible study called Connecting the Dots in Scripture to See the Image of GOD and launched her public speaking brand, The Tilted Fedora Trainer. Having served as an Assistant Pastor, Christian Ed Director, Youth and Women’s Pastor, Doctor K is equally comfortable teaching or speaking virtually through online platforms, in live seminars or workshops, and from the main stage.

Doctor K lives in Duncanville, TX, and is the mother of 4 adult sons.

I had the pleasure of interviewing an amazing couple, Shea & Michelle Watson about how to balance marriage and ministry. They dropped some great nuggets about this topic, including advice for singles seeking a balanced marriage. You don't want to miss this conversation!

Shea and Michelle Watson love Jesus and host The Pantry Podcast together. They serve up spiritual nutrition for your eternal storehouse with every Wednesday episode. The Watsons met one Sunday Service and grew to know each other better because of how involved they both were (and still are) in various ministries in their local assembly. Combined, the two are involved in the outreach, design, technical, logistical, men's, women's, mother's, and life group ministries of Greater Grace Christian Fellowship. Additionally, Shea works full time away from their home just outside of DC, while Michelle stays home with their daughter, Calia, to freelance design for clients and run Thirtyone25—a faith blog and apparel store. They're passionate about empowering people to understand one's identity in Christ and an eternal mindset.

We often think about how we should pursue a relationship with God, but He's pursuing us as well. God is pursuing our hearts. In today's episode, I chat with April Metzler, author of Oh My God, My Heart about The Church & Our Hearts.

April D. Metzler is a Christian author and songwriter. She lives in the countryside of rural Oklahoma with her husband, Joseph, and daughter, Shelby. Her aspirations include many things, but the one she pursues often is writing, whether it be through songwriting, her new book, blogging, poetry, devotionals, or the like. Her aspirations began at a very young age. She has fostered the flame that burns to write for many years and desires to give honor to God through this gift of ministry He placed in her heart.

April is active in church and volunteers whenever she can. Her primary focus has been in youth and music ministries, but she always enjoys helping with any community outreach opportunities. She loves the Lord and has a heart for intercession, as well. She petitions in prayer for those in need of comfort, those who struggle, for those that do not have anyone to pray for them, and whatever/whoever else God places on her heart to intercede for. She will be the first to tell you, “You are loved by God,” when the rest of the world says you are not. April draws from her walk with God to write no matter the platform. She loves Him with all her heart – “even though I stumble, even if I fall, my God is with me wherever I go and He loves me... even in spite of me before I even knew Him! I love because He first loved me.”

Interview Highlights

  • April explains what it means for God to pursue your heart.

  • “He loves us so much, but we don’t even know how to love until we get introduced to Him.” – April Metzler

  • April shares her connection with the character in her book.

  • “It’s just an iron sharpens iron demonstration in this character.” – April Metzler

  • April shares a moment in her life when God was pursuing her, but He seemed so far away.

  • “God doesn’t mess up ever. You can always trust Him.” – April Metzler

  • April shares tips to help us trust God.

  • “Trust Him with something little.” – April Metzler

  • April shares her writing process.

  • “My writing process is. as much as I can, invest time into Him, and then let Him lead and see what happens.” – April Metzler

Many families fall victim to generational curses. These are points of dysfunction that infiltrate the fabric of a family and it's members. Although these curses can be powerful, we can break them. Today's guest, Jerry Dugan, shares his testimony and how he did just that.

Jerry Dugan is the producer and co-host of Beyond the Rut Podcast, a weekly show that discusses the areas of faith, family, fitness, finances, and future possibility in the hopes of inspiring and equipping listeners to pursue the life they’ve always dreamed of living.

Jerry’s early life included experiencing divorce as a child growing up, witnessing his father’s attempts at suicide, and being bullied by his own extended family. He received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 27 years old when he returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and left the Army. Jerry credits God with the resiliency and positive outlook he has on life. “He was there for me before I ever realized I needed Him!” Jerry says.

At the core of Jerry’s heart is to help people live authentic lives that leave a positive legacy with their families and within their communities, which is why he has worked as a Community Educator for a battered women’s shelter, served in his church’s men’s ministry, and worked for non-profit health systems as a learning and development consultant.

Interview Highlights

  • Jerry defines generational curses.

  • ”There was one year where divorce pretty much hit the entire Dugan family at the same time.” – Jerry Dugan

  • Jerry shares the things people would not know just by looking at him.

  • “I look up and my dad is holding a butcher knife to his chest...For about 3-4 months my brother and I were on suicide watch.” – Jerry Dugan

  • Jerry shares how the way he was treated by his family as a child impacted his desire to break the generational curses with his wife and children.

  • “We start with loving each other. We followed it with loving them.” – Jerry Dugan

  • Jerry talks about his journey to becoming a Christian.

  • “God, if you’re real. You better replace me with someone who’s better than me.” – Jerry Dugan

  • Jerry gives advice to those who want to break the generational curses in their families.

I had the honor of being interviewed about my book, Speak Life Moments during the Meet The Author segment hosted by the Christian Women's Book Club on 9/17/2020. Today's episode includes the live recording of that interview. I had an amazing time sharing my passion for helping people understand the power of their words so they can encourage themselves no matter what they are going through. I was interviewed by Lucretia Cargill.

Lucretia Cargill is a wife, mother, and proud grandmother. She is a woman of faith. A woman clothed in strength. Lucretia is on a mission to encourage, empower, and inspire all to start walking in a different direction to get a different result. Lucretia allows the Lord to use her in a mighty way.

Lucretia is the Founder of Consult God First Publishing, where she helps aspiring authors write and publish into their purpose. She also provides Ghostwriting and other writing services as well. She has Self Published 12 Inspirational guides from all walks of life encouraging others with what the Lord has impressed upon her. Lucretia took it upon herself to narrate 6 of her books herself and if the time permits, she will work diligently to get the others done.

Lucretia is the Founder of Lucretia's Anointed Hands' where she designs encouraging and Inspirational T-Shirts to shed some light in this dark world we live in. Lucretia believes that everyone has a purpose in life and is allowing God to use her to display the message.

Lucretia is hoping to make an IMPACT all over the world and serve in areas that God wants her to serve. Serving as a Moderator in the Christian Women's Book Club has allowed her to connect with women who are like-minded and are serving and living for the Lord. She hosts Faith Filled Fridays to encourage the women in the group to learn how to walk by faith and not by sight even when they can't see a way out. Lucretia is just an empty vessel to be used by God.

Have you experienced church hurt or know someone who has? It's become a common problem in the church that we must address. Today's guest helps us unpack our feelings and face them head-on.

Juanita McDonald is the Executive Director for Re-Discover ME Women Initiative. She holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humanitarian Arts, a Master’s Degree in Change Leadership, and Minor in Human Behavior. She is registered as a Victim Service Provider for the state of South Carolina, certified as a Girl Circle Facilitator through the Department of Social Services, and author of the Mental Safety Plan.

Juanita created Re-Discover ME after going through a period of personal loss and re-establishment. During the time that she began to accomplish her own personal goals, she quickly realized the extent that women lose their identity by conforming to titles placed upon them by others or situations, which hinders them from fully developing. Therefore, their services center on Abuse, Trauma, and Mental Health Advocacy for women and teen girls.

While creating the company’s educational plan during its first year, Juanita worked with a test market of sixteen women from different underserved communities for four weeks (two groups), which resulted in four women (36%) making personal life changes:

One received her GED; one started a nonprofit ministry “Walking in Praise and Purpose” for battered and abused women; another pursued counseling and opened a daycare center; and the fourth one got a new job, apartment, and purchased her first new car.

· This does not include the online reach through social media and personal one on one consultations. Re-Discover ME is here to help women re-define their identity, re-develop the “ME” she wants to be, and re-focus her state of mind to pursue her goals.

Interview Highlights

  • Dr. McDonald defines church hurt.

  • "The definition centers on the pain sometimes inflicted by religions institution which is a pain that distances sufferers from the community and from God." - Dr. Juanita McDonald

  • We discuss the shift in how we perceive the church when we've been hurt.

  • "Am I really turning to God or am I turning to the illusion of what God is?" - Dr. Juanita McDonald

  • We discuss why we don't have a straight answer regarding church hurt.

  • "God is an experience." - Dr. Juanita McDonald

  • We discuss why it's important for us to take responsibility for our personal relationship with God.

  • Dr. McDonald shares why it's hard for us to define our spirituality.

  • "We're more into the organized religion than into the spiritual connection." - Dr. Juanita McDonald

  • We discuss why it's easier to blame God than man.

  • "Using the phrase church hurt it actually is centered on everybody in the church but did everybody hurt you?" - Dr. Juanita McDonald

Race and stereotypes are hard topics to discuss. This is particularly true for the body of Christ because we like to believe we are color blind and problems don't exist. Today's guest, Steve Simms shares great insight on how the church can no longer be color blind, but color kind.

Steve Simms is a white-American Christian who has spent a lifetime (along with his wife) exploring America's racial issues. Conflicts involving finances are one of the main reasons marriages end in divorce. How can couples resolve these conflicts? What Biblical principles can Christian couples follow to help them better manage their finances? Today's guests, Marcus and Schrendria Robinson answer these questions and more.

Marcus and Schrendria Robinson met in August 1998 in a graduate-level epidemiology class at the University of South Carolina. They were randomly assigned as lab partners by the professor, and the rest is history. The couple has been married for 15 years and has three amazing sons Marc, Caleb, and Kyle.

Marcus is the Vice President of Corporate Staffing, Inc. It is a temporary staffing firm with eight offices serving the entire state of South Carolina.

Schrendria is the CEO of Clear Vision Seminars & Consulting. This firm helps non-profits and small business owners with organizational development and strategic planning.

Together they serve a wonderful group of people at Mt Olive On The Hill in Columbia, SC. Schrendria serves as pastor, and Marcus is the minister of music. God has favored them and brought this 100-year-old church from a congregation of seven to a congregation of 80 in 2.5 years. Additionally, the couple leads a Facebook Live Session on Sunday nights, discussing faith, family, and finances.

Interview Highlights

  • Schrendria - Christian couples should pray about all of their resources and discover what works best for them. What works for one couple, may not work for them.

  • Marcus - We often don't marry people that have our same financial background. We must get educated together.

  • Schrendria - Engage couples should ask these questions: 1) What did you hear about money when you were growing up? 2) What's your credit score? 3) Are you planning to start a business? 4) What financial obligations are attached to your aspirations? 5) Do you have hidden costs such as child support, wage garnishments?

  • Marcus - Additional questions: 1) What is your relationship like with your extended family? 2) How do you handle when people ask you for money?

  • Schrendria - It's important for ministries to teach about finances, not just asking for tithes and offering, but what they should do with their money.

  • Marcus - Find out what you don't have to pay in this season of COVID-19. Have strong relationships with banks and other financial institutions. Learn about deferments and get the agreements in writing.

  • Schrendria - Learn what's essential. Pay your rent or mortgage first!

  • Marcus - Respect each other's contributions and operate as a team.

  • Gail prefers the term dance ministry instead of praise dance. Dance ministry encompasses the different ways dance can be used. Praise dance is limiting.

  • Zephaniah 3:17 states God rejoiced over us. That translates to movement and dance.

  • "Where the spoken Word can not go, the arts can infiltrate." - Gail A. Glover

  • Gail shares the story of how a dancer's use of cartwheels draws a man to Christ.

  • Dance ministries must study the Word of God to learn how to minister through dance.

  • Technique is important. Dance ministries must study technique and practice to deliver their message properly.

During the COVID-19 pandemic it seemed like the world stopped, but one thing that didn't stop is domestic violence. In fact, it is more prevalent because victims are spending more time with their abusers. How can the church support victims of domestic violence? What signs should we look for? Today's guest, Tracy Michelle Dobbins answers those questions and more.

Tracy Michelle Dobbins is an author and Marriage and Family Counselor from Ocala, FL. She has eight years of counseling experience and counsels regarding anything that can affect the family system. This includes domestic violence, drug addiction, depression, anxiety, premarital counseling, marriage, behavior modification, grief, and trauma.

Ms. Dobbins loves God and has been blessed with two sons and one grandson.

Interview Highlights

  • Tracy shares how 1 Samuel 25 demonstrates domestic violence.

  • Domestic violence continues because it's a secret everyone keeps, not just the victim.

  • Men and women are victims of domestic violence. It isn't just physical.

  • 1 in 4 women are victims of domestic violence.

  • Domestic violence against the elderly has increased.

  • A gun in the home increases the chance of being a victim of violent crime by 15%.

  • The signs of an abuser include self-loathing, control issues, and lack of coping skills.

  • Abuse is not a survivor's fault nor their responsibility to prevent.

  • Domestic abuser survivors and children who witness domestic violence suffer from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrom) that leads to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

  • Tracy encourages us to "be ready when they're ready" when assisting victims.

  • A red flag for domestic violence among youth and teenagers is the abuser is controlling and jealous (Example: checking their phone).

Today we discuss these questions and more with our guest, Viva Lewis Harris.  Viva Lewis Harris is a minister, mother, grandmother, counselor, and the owner of Viva's Closet, LLC. She is a self-taught designer/seamstress that has been humbly serving clients for almost three years. She makes conversational pieces that depict the personality of her clients. With a Master's degree in Counseling, Viva integrates her counseling and transitional life skills, along with sewing together to minister to her clients. She seeks wisdom and guidance from God as she creates masterpieces that compliment. During this short time as a designer, Viva and her team have completed her first annual Fashion Show in 2019 called "Fashion Favor." She was adamant about creating a clergy line that allowed her clients to minister in style. Though modest, they can be bold in fashion, making a statement of who THEY are and WHOM's they are. Her motto is "His masterpiece, My hands." Viva teaches beginner sewing classes to youth and other women. She also has a podcast, Sew Chronicles, that discusses many facets of life while focusing on the three towers of strength: Mind, body, and spirit. Viva was in her car when she birthed Sew Chronicles. She was thinking about how people can be impeccably dressed while IN the church, yet completely broken inside due to hurts, situations, or events that affected them.  In her podcast, she continually focuses on her listeners living FREE and dying EMPTY. As a granddaughter of a pastor (PK); and growing up in the church, Viva experienced the constant instruction of "do's and dont's" of how women should and should not dress in the church. She always sought clarity on why and what that meant. She conformed to the many rules of dress of the church, in fear that if she didn't obey, she was on her way to hell. After seeking God and the Holy Spirit, Viva stepped out of the usual do's and don'ts of rules and instructions; and walked in the freedom of modest fashion. In this episode, Viva shares her testimony and thoughts regarding how believers should dress. We discuss the evolution of fashion in the church, how we should approach someone we believe is dressed inappropriately and more. Tune in to this fun and engaging conversation!
