Today on the podcast I’m introducing you to Leah from Arizona, an amazing single woman whose life has taken an unexpected turn as a health and wellness influencer over the past few years. Leah went on a health journey of losing over 200lbs naturally and started sharing about her health journey on social media – which quickly gained attention. She’s in a season of stepping into all the things God has for her - and hopes and prays that this journey will include a husband one day as well. We also spent some time talking through her “not my husband list” – the list of things that she considers a major turn off in the world of online dating…she wants to know if her list is reasonable, or unreasonable! It’s important for us to know our NEEDS vs our PREFERENCES when it comes to dating, and this conversation will challenge you to take a second look at your list as well. You’re going to love this conversation as well as Leah Mancuso, so reach out to her and make a connection! Email: leahhopehealth@gmail.com

The Singles Series continues with Malachi from Texas, who processes the journey of carrying past pain into relationships, and how it just bleeds into the next relationship, and the next one – if you don’t take the time to heal. In trying to run from his pain, he prolonged it and caused more pain along the way that led him down a path of addiction. But the past few years have ushered him into a season of intentional healing, facing the past, and healing from his past trauma as well as his past mistakes. He’s desiring to do relationships in a way that honors God, and he’s committed to staying faithful to the calling God has on his life for ministry. Not only that, but now he leads a freedom ministry, helping others get set free as well. He’s moved from heartbreak into healing, and he’s praying for a woman who can walk with him along that journey. Ladies, give Malachi a shout out and introduce yourself by contacting him at:

The Singles Series continues with Lauren from Indiana, who is learning to make the most of singleness, while she trusts God with her hopes for marriage. She just finished her degree to become a counselor, and she has a deep love and compassion for people. Not only that, but she’s in a season of really enjoying her people – a strong community of friends that she’s built around herself to do life with. We talk about how she’s built community, and the importance role community, friendship, and intentional relationships has in her life. Then I process with her why a lack of community as a single person would actually be a red flag, as she’s looking for someone to date and match her life and values. This is a really inspiring conversation if you’re single, to encourage you to make sure you’re really making the most of life. Gentleman, reach out and connect with Lauren Creek by starting a conversation with her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/llcreek or Email: laurenc0629@gmail.com

The Singles Series continues with Devon from Florida, who has learned the value of leaning into the hard conversations instead of avoiding them. Devon is pastor, coach, and single dad who has intentionally embarked on his personal healing journey, increasing in his emotional awareness, his conflict and communication, and his desire for authenticity. His past relationship history showed him his tendency to hide from hard conversations, and with the help of God and good counseling, he’s taking the opposite approach in this season of life, which is to embrace the hard conversations with the people he cares about. We talk about how conflict can lead to deeper intimacy, why it’s important to master relationship skills in dating, and what he’s looking for in a woman. Single ladies, if you love Jesus, dimples, and hoop earrings (you’ll have to listen to get that joke), send Devon Daniel a message and start a conversation:

Where is God in the middle of our pain and brokenness? Where is God in our trauma and tragedy? That’s a real question that Jermaine Wilson had to face as a young man in his 20s – facing years in prison, and months in complete isolation. Jermaine’s avoidance of his pain, led him down a life of more pain – facing prison at the age of 15. He spent over seven years in prison, much of that in complete isolation – where he was FORCED to face his pain in a way many will never have to. Where is God in the middle of our pain? Where is God when we cry out to him in our lowest moments? Does He even hear us? Does He even care? Jermaine’s story of pain and wrestling with God will challenge you, and it will bring you to tears to see the hand of God in the middle of some serious and heart-wrenching pain. You will see God show up in ways you couldn’t have imagined – and it will give you hope in your own pain. Jermaine’s story is a reminder of the pain and brokenness that’s happening every day behind closed doors – and a powerful look at the church INSIDE and what God is doing even in the most darkest places.

Friends, this on-air counseling session is especially meaningful to my heart – because my family and I are spending the weekend serving with Prison Fellowship at their Angel Tree Sports Camp, and getting a front row seat into what God is doing in some of the most difficult pain people are enduring. Consider learning more about Prison Fellowship and supporting their incredible, life-changing ministry HERE.

Today on the show I’m joined by Angie, who’s greiving the fact that her adult daughter went “no contact” recently, withdrawing from family activities and isolating her daughter from seeing her grandma. Angie is grieving both the loss of her relationship with her daughter as well as her granddaughter, and wondering if there is anything she can do to move toward reconciliation and connection. I talk her through the building blocks of a safe relationship, what she can and what she can’t do, and what it means for her to work on creating a space of safety and security for her adult daughter and their relationship with one another, even through their differences. According to Angie, their differing political views have kept her daughter away, so we spend some time talking about navigating the difficult territory when there is a stark contrast of views and perspectives between two people, whether politically, theologically, or otherwise. This episode is more important in this generation and culture than it ever has been before, so take the time to listen, process, and learn alongside Angie. Today on the show I’m joined by Melissa who is calling in to get help dealing with her anger issues. She’s noticing that her anger outbursts are getting less controlled, and has noticed losing her temper in the car as well as in public – at the bank, for example. She’s not sure where these patterns of anger have come from, and she feels like she’s tried everything to try and break free from her anger with no success. We process what her anger means, what emotions it represents, and then we look for trigger patterns to trace what may be the underlying root of her anger issues. We make some serious progress in this session, as I help her track the underlying issue that’s been holding her back. If you struggle with anger, listen to this episode and start putting the pieces together in your own life so that you can respond to the signal of anger instead of simply reacting to it. Listen to this episode, and then go deeper on your own journey of healing by connecting with one of our faith-forward counselors at the Debra Fileta Counselors Network!

Today on the show I am joined by my friend Tim Ross for an on-air counseling session as we process the concept of vulnerability in relationships. What does it mean to be vulnerable? I guide him through the analogy of seeing vulnerability like a pool – equipped with both a shallow end and a deep end. Vulnerability means to go first, to take that first jump, and to invite people to the deep end of your life, and share authentically. He opens up about the moment that changed everything for him, where he decided that he will never keep a secret again, and his journey toward being open and honest in every part of his life. We process through both the benefits and the risks of vulnerability, how to find friends who are willing to go there, and why being open and honest is not a gender thing – it’s an invitation to all. This episode is filled with lessons to learn and things to process about your own life, and what holds you back from sharing authentically. Don’t miss this on-air session, and then go deeper with your relationships by grabbing a copy of People Skills.

Today on the show I am joined by Kirby Kelly for an on-air counseling session, as we process her past trauma of growing up with alcoholic parents. In this emotional conversation, Kirby opens up specifically about her complex relationship with her mother, who continued to relapse into addiction to alcohol until she passed away unexpectedly in 2023. Kirby is now expecting her first baby girl, and a new layer of trauma and mother wounds has made its way to the surface of her life. She is dealing with a layer of new emotions as she grieves for the mother she never had, and also grieves the fact that her mom will not be here with her during this vulnerable season of her life as she herself becomes a new mom. We process the concept of God showing up to her as a good father, but what it means to ask him to fill in the gaps of our mother wounds as well. This episode is SO powerful, vulnerable, and emotional – and is so necessary for anyone who can relate to experiencing the trauma of mother wounds. Go deeper in healing from the trauma of your past, with my book Are You Really OK?

Today I have an on-air session with Christian Bevere, as we processed some of the mistakes she made during her dating days, including dating from places of insecurity, as well as the unrealistic expectations she placed on what dating was “supposed to” look like or feel like in that season of life. We then talk through how unrealistic expectations continue to play out, if we’re not careful, even in marriage. We unpack how family dynamics and Christian culture can influence our perspectives on dating and relationships for both the good and bad, and how there can almost be a “desperation” for relationships, that lead us to looking for love in the wrong places. If this episode resonates with you, check out True Love Dates to learn more about becoming healthy standing alone, and attracting and engaging in healthy relationships.

The stress of the sandwich generation is real, but extremely underestimated. People don’t talk about it enough. How do you navigate the burdens and blessings of caring for young children, as well as caring for your aging parents…all at once? How do you navigate that stress while you’re also trying to run a household, keep a marriage intact, provide for your family, keep your job, and manage your mental and emotional health all the while? Theologian Joel Muddamalle sits down with me to process the stress he’s dealing with in this season of life, caring for his aging parents and the many needs that come with that, all while managing a household and young children of his own. If you’re dealing with the blessings and burdens of being the sandwich generation – this episode will encourage you and give you some practical suggestions of how to manage this season well, set healthy boundaries, and care for yourself in the process – so that caring for others doesn’t end up destroying you. If you enjoyed this episode, you need to check out Soul Care and learn how to prevent burnout, and care for your own soul as you care for others.

What happens when you don’t fit into the social norms? What happens when the social skills that are “supposed to” feel “easy”, feel like an incredibly difficult challenge? This is a glimpse of what it’s like to live with neurodivergence, and a diagnosis that impacts your social skills, such as ADHD or Autism. Today on the show Kendall Mariah, Instagram influencer and content creator, opens up to me about the burden and struggles of living with social challenges in a relational world. She never felt like she was “normal” growing up, and she couldn’t figure out why friendships were so hard for her. It’s been a long journey for her, and one that’s not finished yet, but she’s learned how to steward her differences and see the blessings in her diagnosis – and you will too. He’s worked through his personal journey of church trauma, but as a counselor at a local church, he wants to find better tools to help those who are in the thick of it. We are so excited to celebrate the official launch of my new book People Skills today! People Skills offers 31 transformational social skills that will strengthen your interpersonal relationships, increase your influence, and help you create meaningful interactions. Rooted in Scripture and informed by science and psychology, this roadmap offers practical lessons on empathy, clear communication, listening, body language, conflict resolution, attachment styles, and more.

As we continue this People Skills series on the show, I’m joined today by Anthony, who called in to Talk To Me About how to move past the hurt he experienced at his past church. Anthony talks through the church hurt he experienced after serving relentlessly at his last church, and after giving so much yet getting so little in return.

This episode takes an interesting turn when I start to notice this pattern of “giving too much” in Anthony’s life and history…and we start to make some really significant connections. Learning to own your role in a relationship is a really important people skill, and it’s one that we discuss in depth in this important episode of Talk To Me. If you’ve been hurt in relationships, again and again, it’s time to start looking for patterns. This episode will help you learn how. How do you walk through this kind of betrayal, when you’ve been completely blindsided? Today, we talk through his story of pain and friendship betrayal, and the number one thing that helped him move into healing: forgiveness. In one of the most vulnerable conversations of the year, I sat down with Pastor Shawn Johnson and processed the moment that literally almost took his life -- the moment he broke mentally and emotionally. After suffering from intense and continuous panic attacks behind the scenes for many years, one day he could take it no more. Thank God he chose vulnerability in that dark and desperate moment, and reached out for help, because it was vulnerability: letting people in on his darkest moments, that ultimately saved his life. We spend some time talking about the series of events leading up to this dark season in his life, what kept him from opening up before this moment, and how he's keeping track of his mental health and well being today. If you suffer from mental illness, panic attacks, depression or anxiety -- his journey will truly challenge and inspire you to continue moving toward healing, and to learn to let people in.

What do you do when your people pleasing tendencies continue to come up again and again? How do you navigate the desire to please people, but ultimately continue to strive to please God? Today, I talk to Judah Smith about his tendencies to care too much about what people think, and the self-serving, self-protecting, selfish nature behind being a person who cares too much about what people think. We unpack the idea that ultimately, the root of people-pleasing is actually selfish -- because it's the desire to be wanted, loved, accepted, and validated -- is actually a desire to meet a deep, unquenchable need in us. If you struggle with people-pleasing, you need to tune in to this one.

"I've always just wanted to be accepted". I think many of us can relate to that sentiment. Max Lucado certainly could. Much of his life was spent feeling "on the outside" and wanting to be accepted, which led to a series of unhealthy behaviors just to try and find acceptance. Today, he vulnerably unpacks where this belief system started in his childhood, how it led him down a very unhealthy path, and how it still creeps into his life, even though he's been walking with Jesus for so many years. This is one of my favorite on-air sessions, with one of my favorite people. I know it will challenge and change you.

We’re spending the last few weeks of 2025 reviewing our TOP 5 MOST DOWNLOADED episodes!

Why do so many Christians struggle with boundaries?

We are taught that boundaries are wrong, sinful, or selfish — and that we should always say YES and be ready to sacrifice and serve at a moment’s notice.

But is this really the way of Jesus? Or could this lead us down a path of emotional burnout, codependency, and unhealthy relationships?

Today, we have an on-air counseling session with my friend, Bianca Olthoff. Bianca has been on the podcast before, processing pain from the past (listen here if you missed it!) but today we dive into the topic of BOUNDARIES and learning to protect your heart and calling.

Bianca shares how she lived so many years with low to no boundaries, and the damage that caused in her life and in her relationships. We talk about her childhood, and how the concept of low boundaries began to take root in her life…and followed her into adulthood.

If boundaries have been a weakness for you, you HAVE TO make time to listen to this episode from start to finish! Setting healthy boundaries is the Jesus way.

Find out how!

Please use caution in considering those listening around you, as well as your own personal triggers.Cristina Baker joins me on the podcast today to share about her radical transformation from living in a world of pleasure and pain and darkness, to radically meeting Jesus. From abuse, to neglect, to living in chaos - her life was filled with significant and serious pain and suffering even from a young age. She talked about being "pulled toward the darkness" to deal with her pain, and how that darkness literally almost took her life. She was drawn to a dark lifestyle, and was headed down a path of destruction - until Jesus stepped in the most radical way. Her story will inspire and encourage you to keep praying for anyone in your life who is living in darkness. If God can do it in her life, He can do it for theirs. You can also watch the full episode on YouTube.Talk To Me: The Debra Fileta Podcast Extras:Order Any Day Emotions Today! The Debra Fileta Counselors Network:Book a counseling session at the Debra Fileta Counselors Network and get started on your healing journey from the inside out TODAY! DEBRA FILETA is a Licensed Professional Counselor, national speaker, and founder of the Debra Fileta Counselors Network. Trigger warning: This podcast discusses themes of abuse and suicidal ideation. Please use caution in considering those listening around you, as well as your own personal triggers.Today on the podcast, I have a powerful conversation with Anne Beiler, who spent years of her life keeping secrets that were never meant to be kept. You may recognize her name from the famous Auntie Anne's pretzels (the best pretzels on earth, by the way!).We spent time unpacking her dark history of abuse, her struggle with secrecy, and the 7 years of struggling with a secret that she was too afraid to share. Even when she felt like she was at her lowest point, and contemplated taking her life, she got the strength to take the first steps toward healing, by using her voice to speak the truth - to shine a light on the darkness, and invite God into the broken places in her life.May God help us to continue shining truth in the darkest places in our lives, and allow His healing work to begin. I take the time to dig a little deeper, and help him identify that there may be some significant things going on underneath the surface that are impacting his thought life. In today’s episode, we’re talking about something you probably haven’t thought about before. Did you know there’s such a thing as being TOO POSITIVE? It’s called toxic optimism. Toxic Optimism is when we use “positivity” or Christian platitudes to bypass difficult feelings rather than allow ourselves to face and feel the difficult things.

But what we’re actually doing is burying the trauma, the grief, and the pain — instead of dealing with it. And ironically, when we bury it, we end up prolonging the pain because the best way to preserve something is to bury it.

Today I’m talking with Courtney, who struggles with this very thing. Her whole life she’s tried to be “tough, and positive” and make all the right choices in hopes of pleasing God and the people around her…but she’s at a place where all that is on the backburner because she’s feeling really burnt out. We talk through this today, in a raw and honest conversation about her toxic optimism, where it began, and how she uses it to keep from actually dealing and healing. It’s an eye opening conversation with her, and I think it will be for you as well.

It’s time to RESET these different areas of our lives and heal from the inside-out. Tune into today’s important episode about toxic optimism. And learn more about toxic optimism in my new book Reset!

In today’s episode, I’m having an important conversation with Irene Rollins, pastor’s wife and ministry leader, about her secret battle with alcoholism behind closed doors. Irene battled with addiction for six years before everything came to a head. Her story is eye-opening, because it reminds you of the dangers of hiding and escaping from pain instead of dealing with it. This conversation is so honest and necessary for any of us who might have some things in our life that are moving towards addictions.

Whether it’s screen time, gaming, pornography, alcohol or a substance…addiction is subtle until it’s serious.

In today’s episode, I’m having an important conversation with Alex Seely, co-pastor of The Belonging Co. Have you ever wanted to reset your view of God? Today we’re talking to Alex about the negative view of God that she previously carried and how her past trauma and difficult experiences impacted the way she viewed God for many years — but also how she was able to RESET in this area of her life. So many times we transfer our experiences with others onto our expectations of God. We unpack some of her past, and the steps she took in order to heal, grow, and transform her view of God to what it is today…and what a journey!!! It’s such a powerful and healing conversation for anyone who has been hurt by the people of God — and will really challenge you to consider your own beliefs about God — and WHY.

It’s time to RESET these different areas of our lives and heal from the inside-out.

Maybe you’re struggling in your relationship with God.

Maybe you’re stuck in a pattern of unhealthy relationships.

Maybe it’s behaviors that are sabotaging your life like an addiction or unhealthy habits.

It could be your attitude, your mindset, or your perspective on life that needs to shift.

Whatever it is – in order for change to happen, it has to start from the inside out.

My new book RESET is all about getting healthy from the inside out. It’s a book of 31 practices that will guide you into the process of healing, by giving you practical steps that will transform your life with changes that last.

In honor of my new book, over the next few weeks, we’re diving into different areas of your life that might be in need of a RESET.

We’ll be talking through everything from unhealthy thinking, to your relationship with God, to your marriage, trauma history, body image, boundaries, and everything in between. We’re going on a journey of resetting from our default mode, and learning to do it differently!

As the first episode in our RESET series, I wanted to do something a little special today on the podcast. I had the joy of reading this book on audio myself, and so I wanted to share with you the first few pages of the book so you could hear it first right here before anyone else on the podcast! So sit back and take a listen to RESET: powerful habits to own your thoughts, understand your feelings, and change your life.

Today’s on-air couples therapy session is with Abigail and Daniel, a couple who is trying to balance their every day needs, as well as the needs of their 18 month old first child — and not take out their stress and emotions on one another!! Which is unfortunately how the pattern has been going so far.

It’s the fourth and final episode of our February Couples Therapy Series and know you’re going to love this conversation, and likely relate to it in many ways!

But is their conflict just about their needs in the here and now? Or is it a little deeper.

You know what I’m going to say — it’s always deeper than what’s happening right here and right now!! I want to help this couple get to the roots, and help them recognize what it looks like to be deliberate about not taking out our feelings, hurts, and struggles on our spouse. And what to do instead with all those real and important needs and emotions.

I want to introduce you to the second couple in our COUPLES THERAPY PODCAST…Nikki and Russel are a young couple who are feeling disconnected emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Coming into marriage, they had some different expectations — and hadn’t talked in depth about what to expect. Their false expectations, specifically around sex and marriage, came from the church and purity culture.

When they got into marriage and things didn’t match what they expected – they didn’t know what to do. Their wedding night didn’t go as planned, and they have been truly struggling every since. And so, they’ve avoided intimacy every since — physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. In today’s episode they reveal a big secret they’ve never shared with anyone…and now they are here, trying again, wanting to heal and see if there’s a way to reconnect in their marriage on every level and deal with the big secret.

It’s the beginning of a New Year! And at the start of every year, I think it’s so important that we take the time to do a check in and ask ourselves how we’re REALLY doing.

Are You Really OK?

Have you ever found yourself in one-sided relationship where you are doing ALL the work? Where you are giving, and giving, and giving – and getting little to nothing in return?

Why do you find yourself one-way relationships again, and again, and again? The simple answer is this:

I also talk through the three types of relationships you need to have in your life, because learning to recognize which type of relationship you are in will let you know whether or not it’s time to WALK AWAY from a one sided relationship.

We’re talking junk food relationships. Relationships that are easy to get, but end up hurting you more than helping you.

Q: Why do I always end up in relationships that are convenient but not good for me?

That’s essentially the question from today’s caller on the hotline. She finds herself in relationships with guys who live nearby, but aren’t good for her. She’s wanting to break the cycle of convenience and pursue something different.

Just because a relationship is convenient, doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

We talk about the concept of “junk food relationships” — and how some things are convenient and easy, but not necessarily healthy. We help get to the roots of some of the real reasons she’s going to these type of relationships, and how to do something different. It’s such a great conversation, and you might just be able to see a little of yourself in her story and situation.

Do you have questions you’ve always wanted to ask the opposite sex? When it comes to dating in this generation, it’s inevitable to find yourself wondering what the opposite sex is thinking!

And you’re not alone. It can be really hard to read/understand the opposite sex at times, especially with all of the underlying assumptions we bring to the table about the opposite sex.

Today on the podcast, we give our singles a chance to ask the opposite sex questions they’ve always wondered, and never asked!

Our singles are back in Part 3 of our SINGLES PANEL SERIES. We’re getting into the minds of Christian singles from across the country, asking them all about the dating scene, the single life, and everything you wanted to know about the opposite sex but never wanted to ask over the next three episodes.

Today we’re opening up the lines of communication, and giving the singles a chance to ask each other questions on their mind about the opposite sex, how they think, their underlying motivations, and everything in between. It’s a really fun conversation, addressing issues we may have otherwise not had the chance to address.

I can’t wait for you to hear this episode, and get to know our singles panel!
