Javier Reyes, host of The Digital Dash interviews illustrious still photographer Clay Enos.
BIO: Clay Enos, despite over a decade of working on blockbuster film sets, refuses to be pigeonholed into any one category of photography. Movie posters, a far-flung non-profit assignment, or a spontaneous portrait on the street, finds Clay consistently capturing moments that feel both real and transcendent. Always spontaneous yet sincere, Clay's unique style shines through his commercial, editorial and personal photographs.
Clay enjoys the fast pace of shooting on the fly. His relaxed, jovial style allows him to be creative and resourceful with whatever he is shooting. His recent commercial clients include Warner Bros. and the Bloomberg Foundation.
In 2007, film director Zack Snyder hired Clay to document his film adaptation of Watchmen for Warner Bros. That opportunity opened up a world that for the next decade saw him working as a set photographer. His most notable recent films include the Academy Award winning A Star is Born and the upcoming sequel to the critically acclaimed and worldwide blockbuster, Wonder Woman 1984. When Clay is not riding his bicycle on the streets of New York, he is roaming the globe with his wife, jewelry designer, Kristine Cabanban, making memorable photographs of far away places (50-plus countries). He's as happy with an iPhone as with fancier gear. He speaks Spanish and French, has no problem traveling coach, and sleeps like a baby on airplanes.
The ad-free, data mining-free social network Vero is Clay's favorite place to share his work. He does so generously as one of their brand Ambassadors.
Clay has a BFA in Film, Photography and Visual Arts from Ithaca College. He has studied further with the VII photographers Jim Nachtwey, Gary Knight and Antonin Kratochvil.

Nathan Silver graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2005. Since then, the filmmaker has written and directed four short films and seven features: THE BLIND (2009), EXIT ELENA (2012), SOFT IN THE HEAD (2013), UNCERTAIN TERMS (2014), STINKING HEAVEN (2015), ACTOR MARTINEZ (2016, co-directed with Mike Ott), and THIRST STREET (2017). His films have played festivals and venues around the world, including New York Film Festival, Venice, Tribeca, Mar del Plata, AFI, Locarno, Rotterdam, Viennale, MoMA and the Cineteca Nacional, Mexico. The New Yorker recently called Silver "a modernistic master of melodrama," and the New York Times did a profile on him.
In honor of the 200th Anniversary Mary Shelley’s book FRANKENSTEIN, we have invited Sara Karloff, the only child of Boris Karloff, to talk about her father who starred in the films FRANKENSTEIN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN.
Leah Yananton is a filmmaker, writer, actor, and performance artist based in Los Angeles. Yananton appeared regularly at The Groundlings Theatre in the Catmilk Show under the direction of founder Gary Austin. She is a member of Rob Watzke’s SHPLOTZ! improvisational theater company, with weekly performances featuring special guests such as Helen Slater, Helen Hunt, and Jason Alexander.
Yananton’s professional film experience began in the camera department on Spike Lee’s Bamboozled and Marc Levin’s & Mark Benjamin's Brooklyn Babylon. She went on to travel the globe working on documentaries for HBO, National Geographic, and the Discovery Channel.
She received her B.F.A. from Columbia University where she received the Stephen Ades award for Creative Writing as well as a scholarship from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, to study Mandarin Chinese. While studying in Taipei, she wrote and directed her first bilingual short film Baozhi / The Newspaper. Returning to New York, Yananton co-wrote and directed “The Naked Show,” the full-length off-off Broadway political satire about college activism and mainstream media in the wake of 9-11 and the start of the Iraq War.
She studied directing under Columbia School of the Arts dramaturgy professor Lenore DeKoven as part of Our Workshop East. After completing the two-year Meisner acting conservatory program under James Brill at The Neighborhood Playhouse, Yananton wrote, directed and acted in the surreal short film, THE BURIAL (15 min) an Official Selection at the L.A. Shorts Fest, and appeared in Steven Spielberg’s WAR OF THE WORLDS.
Yananton was commissioned to direct the documentary MANHATTANVILLE: A NEIGHBORHOOD UNDER SIEGE (32 min) which chronicled Columbia University’s controversial expansion into her West Harlem neighborhood. MANHATTANVILLE screened at the Harlem Film Festival, Girl Fest Hawaii, and L.A. Shorts Fest, and continues to be screened by the Columbia community and West Harlem neighborhood to facilitate dialogue.
Yananton performed LANDESCAPES, a performance art video installation commissioned by the cWOW Gallery in Newark. Leah is also developing an environmental justice documentary IN OUR BACKYARD, about the municipal polluting of an African American community in Athens, GA. Her next narrative feature deals with the problem of commercial exploitation of sexuality among the LGBTQ community in West Hollywood, and is currently in development.
Dr. Penney joins Dr. Greenwood to talk about the informality and frivolity of social media supplanting more serious conversations in policy.

Happily ever after! Well, not exactly! Flipping the script has become a popular media literacy technique, particularly when it comes to the ageless fairy tale princess living happily ever after with their prince. Recently, the princess narrative has been recast as one of mistress of her own destiny. The irreverent musical comedy "Disenchanted" has been playing off-Broadway for some time. In this comedy, the original storybook heroines come back to life to set the record straight with an empowering message for modern girls. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and others reflect on their lot in life; they sing about sexuality, body image issues and racism. The show is having a local run at the Chester Theater here in NJ and this week, Dr. Greenwood talks to Susan Hagen, who by night plays Rapunzel in Desenchanted and by day is the department administrator and program advisor in the department of secondary and special education in the College of Education here at Montclair State. The World Health Organization listed gaming addiction as a mental disorder in their international classification of diseases. She is the director of "Jerusalem, We Are Here," an interactive documentary that digitally re-inscribes Palestinians into the Jerusalem neighborhoods from which they were expelled by the 1948 war. Media Download host Christian Curatola talks to filmmaker Isabel Sandoval. She is here at Montclair State to present her film “Apparition”, a meditative drama about the limits of faith and the corruption of innocence. She produced, wrote and directed another full-length feature titled Señorita in 2011, which was nominated for Best Picture by the Young Critics Circle of the Philippines.
Host Christian Curatola sat down with filmmaker Kathy Rose. Her work has evolved from her early drawn animated films of the 1970’s, through her unique, pioneering performance work combining dance with film in the 1980-90’s, to her current surreal performance video spectacles and installations, with influence from symbolist art and the Japanese Noh theater.
Rose received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Performance Art in 2003, and in 2005 was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts grant in Video (Media & New Technology).
Rose has toured extensively in live performance throughout the United States and Europe, giving performances at the Museum of Modern Art’s Cineprobe series, Kennedy Center, Serious Fun at Lincoln Center, Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain, the Walker Art Center,The Kitchen, Institute of Contemporary Art in London, Hirschorn Museum/Washington, Danspace-St. Marks Church, Baltimore Art Museum, Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Akademie die Kunst in Berlin, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, etc. as well as performances in Geneva, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Bern, Zurich, Hiroshima, etc. Her video installation works have been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Aldrich Museum, Cooper Union, etc.
Filmmaker Sarita Khurana joins host Christian Curatola on this episode of Media Download. Khurana’s feature film, A Suitable Girl, world premiered in the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival Documentary Competition section, and won the Best New Documentary Director prize. Her critically acclaimed work in narrative, documentary, and experimental film has been screened and exhibited internationally. Her work often focuses on South Asian stories, and explores female subjectivities. Migration, memory, marginality, community, territory, gender and sexuality are common themes in her work.

Mitch directed the Amazon documentary “This is What We Make” which earned three bronze Addy Awards. He was the lead cinematographer for Netflix’s documentary “Back in Time” and the Showtime Docu-series “Legacy: Bob Hurley” earning a Cynopsis award for Best documentary Series short form video. His production of the Nore Davis Comedy special, premiered in May and he stopped by our studios while shooting his next documentary slated for air on Showtime.

On this episode we discuss “The Mandela Effect,” a perception of an alternate reality in which one fact of your memory is misremembered. For example, many people think the Monopoly Guy has a monocle when in reality he does not. Our host, Chris Sopko then interviews random students on campus as part of a social experiment measuring the wide reaching effects of this psychological phenomena.

Eric Umansky, deputy managing editor of ProPublica and the man behind a series of 15 tweets to Press Secretary Sean Spicer Monday evening, joins guest host Joe Amditis of the Center for Cooperative Media to talk about how professionals journalist go about fact-checking statements and other information especially as it trickles down via official channels of information. Yesterday, ProPublica reported on a change to President Trump's trust that allows him to pull money from his businesses whenever he wants, without publicly disclosing the transaction. Since then, Press Secretary Sean Spicer went on the defensive, and said he was not aware of any changes to the document and just because "a left-wing blog" reported it, doesn't mean it actually happened. ProPublica responded with a series of 15 tweets linking to the actual clause that was changed and providing evidence that ProPublica has a history of holding all those in power accountable. Mike Kelly, a longtime columnist for The Bergen Record newspaper, now part of the USA Today network joins us on this episode of Media Download to talk about his interview with President Trump's senior counselor, KellyAnne Conway. His interview made national headlines earlier this week after Conway alleged that surveillance of the Trump campaign went beyond wiretapping…saying “surveillance” may be even broader than President Trump suggested. Doctor Cole is a force of nature in higher education. In her close to 20 years at Montclair State, her vision has led to massive expansions of our campus, curriculum, dorms, parking and resulted in the University being ranked in several national rankings.
Under her wing, just this last year, Montclair State was named among the Top 100 Public Institutions on The Wall Street Journal, ranking the University's diverse learning environment 75th overall.
Montclair State also earned the Research Doctoral University Designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in 2016.
"U.S. News & World Report" listed Montclair State among the Top 200 National Universities in the Country in their 2017 rankings, and Forbes' 2016 edition of America's Top Colleges listed Montclair State in its rankings too.
A magazine titled "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education" named Montclair State a "Top Degree Producer" in its ranking of institutions that confer the most degrees to minority students.
Montclair State also met the criteria set forth by the U.S. Department of Education to be considered a Hispanic serving institution, and was included in The Campus Pride Top 25 LGBTQ friendly colleges and universities list.

NYCC is expecting 180,000 fans to pack the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in Manhattan this week in a yearly pilgrimage to the Javits Center for the biggest Comic Con around the world.
