Are you ready for the greatest adventure of your life? In my weekly podcast, we explore the adventures, challenges, triumphs, sorrows, and the fun of being a dad.
I am the father of 6 kids. My wife and I had four and then God blessed us with 2 more through adoption. I think I have a unique perspective and experience to help fathers become the best dad possible.
I also love to interview other men trying to be great dads, step-dads, adopted dads, granddads, and foster dads. Let's help each other become the best men, husbands, and dads possible to leave a legacy that will endure.
In this powerful episode of Fathers Fire, Jody Sedrick is joined again by Chris Miller for a deep, honest, and necessary conversation on fatherhood, emotional growth, and how to break generational patterns of silence and suppression.
They discuss:
Whether you're a dad, mentor, or man on a journey of growth, this episode is a must-listen. It’s real. It's raw. And it might just be the mirror you’ve been avoiding.

In this episode I sit down with Chris Miller—mechanic-turned “Fatherhood Architect,” coach, and founder of Mechanic’s Garage—for a real, practical talk on modern fatherhood.
We unpack the chaos and beauty of blended families, why “respect” is earned not assumed, and how dads can design their own blueprint instead of repeating (or rebelling against) their upbringing. Chris shares his “connection before correction” mantra and the three things every kid craves—feeling seen, safe, and heard. The guys dive into boundaries that unite (use we and I, not you), putting marriage first so kids feel the ripple of love, and Chris’s killer car analogies: maintain your engine (body), computers (mind), suspension (heart), and fuel system (spirit)—and be a man worthy of “high-octane” love. They close with honest talk on modeling growth, letting kids witness your repairs, and taking the first step: you go first.
Key Takeaways
Do your maintenance: body, mind, heart, spirit—be “high-octane” worthy.

This week on Father’s Fire, host Jody Sedrick sits down with Tyler Davis—a new dad, former youth pastor, and healthcare IT professional from Nashville—to dive deep into the emotional rollercoaster of domestic adoption, fatherhood, and the silent strength men carry in the process.
Tyler shares the whirlwind story of adopting his son Cameron with his wife, the challenges they faced navigating the adoption system, and the faith that carried them through moments of doubt, grief, and hope. From parenting classes to bonding with a newborn, Tyler opens up about what it really takes to adopt and how the journey shaped his marriage and manhood.
Jody and Tyler also unpack the importance of men having safe spaces, building strong emotional support systems, and showing up as present, patient fathers—especially for adopted children who need trust and love at a deeper level.
Key Moments:
Whether you’re considering adoption, walking through it now, or just want a real convo about being a dad, this episode is for you.

Teaching our kids to own their mistakes empowers them to move through life with integrity and confidence.
This week on the podcast, I’m talking about the power of speaking with grace.
I’m sharing a favorite verse—Colossians 4:6—which says:
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, so that you know how to answer everyone.”
It got me thinking: when we talk to our kids, are we building them up or breaking them down?
Do our words give them confidence, hope, and a sense of being truly loved—or do they leave them feeling small, discouraged, or unseen?
The truth is, how we speak matters.
Not just to our children, but also to our spouses.
This episode is a reminder (for me too) that we’ve got to be more intentional with our words. Let’s speak life, not just correction. Let’s bring grace into every conversation at home.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this
This week I share some thoughts after watching a video of a mom telling her boy "To stop crying, be a man". We've all done it. This starts at a very young age and is teaching our boys to suppress their emotions instead of giving them the tools to navigate them.
This week I sit down with Tommy Trenton Jr. to get his thoughts, experience, and perspective of being a dad. I love what he said "I was built for this! I was built to be a dad". We explore what he means and what it takes to be the dad that your kids need.Check it out!

Today I've been pondering a post that I saw on Facebook by my friend Shon Hart. If you don't know Shon is the creator and Executive Director of InvolvedDad. He invited his son Levi to one of his speaking events and had his son share his daily affirmations.
It reinforced in my mind the power of affirmations to help you become the man, husband and father you aspire to be.
A lot of people complain about their father-in-law? But my father-in-law is next level! Next level AWESOME! This father's day I wanted to pay tribute to him and all of you immigrant fathers who have fled your home to build a new home in a different country.
Plus my good friend @ShonHart from InvolvedDad drops into share a few thoughts!
The past week I have been pondering conversations on both sides of the Gay Pride Month. It has really given me pause to reflect on my own experiences as with my children - what I could've done better and what I wish I could do over. If your buddy calls and invites you to a last minute car show, fishing trip, business event you will move mountains, change schedules, to make it happen. Scheduled to launch Saturday March 2nd
Yesterday I got a private text message congratulating me and Judie Sedrick for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. This person also commented how he had always felt like his marriage was a burden instead of being founded on friendship and love. I thought I'd share 10 things that have helped Judie and I build our relationship over the past 35 years. I hope these help you and would love to hear what you've found helpful
Last week I had an experience that really got me thinking about how we treat the women in our life. It got me thinking about 3 key things that we need to teach our daughters:
You have a voice and deserve to be seen
It's ok to be strong, intelligent, beautiful and sexy. (It's not your fault he's a pig)
You belong, you are precious, and I love being with you as your dad
I'd love to hear your comments!
Jody
For the past couple of days I've been troubled by a post that I saw on Facebook that basically said "Carry Your Own Burden". When I think about the fact that 70% of all suicides are men I think there has to be a better way than "Carry Your Own Burden" or "Pull yourself up by the bootstraps". I explore some thoughts about creating an environment were we can support and love each other through our dark moments and be there for each other.
I'd love to hear your thoughts
Have a blessed day! And be the blessing that someone needs.
Cheers

A lot of us men struggle because we are trapped in the swamp of yesterday. We didn't have a father in the home. One of our parents had an addiction problem. ":Parenting" was administered by physical and emotional abuse and a myriad of other reasons that have left you destitute of a positive role model. How do you break the cycle? How do you change the trajectory?
We tend to act out of a place of pride, anger, or fear?
What triggers us?
Do we feel unappreciated?
Do we feel unseen?
Do we feel disrespected? Is that rooted in never having a voice as a child?
You can’t heal what you never reveal! Unveil the mask
A lot of times we are holding on to ill feelings and the other person doesn’t even know, is oblivious, or doesn’t care. So the animosity you feel is cankering your heart and soul
Be the change you want to see
This week I sit down with Wil Fosset to explore the difference in going from one child to two. Can it be that different? This week I share some thoughts about taking on the entire weight of the challenges of life on your shoulders and neglecting to include your wife who wants to be part of your life and finding the solution.
I also talk about running into a hurricane of problems and trying to control every aspect as well as stirring up the pot in the name of "solving the problem"
I'd love to hear your thoughts

We tend to define our life by a single moment. When in reality it is a series of moments that lead to something tragic or something amazing. A series of moments define our character and who we become. A single moment can ruin a reputation, it can set us on a new trajectory. When we are purposeful in crafting moments we can create a life that is fulfilling and leave a legacy on our children that will last far into their life. What are you doing with the moments you've been given?CheersJody

Hey gents, It's been three weeks since we last sat down. I have been swamped with business travel and neglected to get some episodes pre-recorded. My apologies.
On a positive note, in the past two weeks I've had some amazing opportunities to sit down with men all over the globe to talk about business, family, and personal challenges. In my conversations the reality that many of us are walking with serious personal emotional trauma from our childhood that continues to haunt us even though we've tried to hide it behind the masks we wear.
Today I explore the masks we wear to hide our pain with the hope that it will help us come to grips with what we are trying to hide and have the courage to look at them and start the healing process.

In the. depths of a heavy challenge has someone ever told you "Just have faith!" and the words rather than comfort, ring hollow, or even come across as unintendly harsh?
I share a few thoughts that I hope will help you walk with greater tenderness and love as you try to support a loved one. There is a time to acknowledge pain and loss, a time to extend love, and a time to know when to encourage faith. Wisdom is knowing the difference.

Hey guys,
Last week I went and saw the movie Sound of Freedom. It is a powerful and compelling origin story of Tim Ballard and his work rescuing children from the sex trade. In the very beginning of the movie, it shows how he is working to earn the trust of a pedophile to get more information so that he can rescue a kid. As I watched this interaction, it highlighted that porn was a contributing factor (and overlooked) part of the illegal sex trade.
I know a lot of you men struggle with overcoming your porn addiction and I thought I'd share some insights that maybe will put into perspective and help you ultimately overcome your addiction, I know it's a challenge and talk about this in the spirit of helping us all be men of integrity both in private and in public, and guardians of our heart.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you for listening!
Jody
For the past couple of weeks, I've thought about why men struggle in their relationship with their spouse or significant other. At the beginning of the relationship we're great a love bombing; going out of our way to prove we are the one. But somewhere we lose the pursuit of her heart and wonder why she's nagging and always complaining about you not doing your part.
Perhaps it's time to look in the mirror and look at what you used to do versus now. Your actions will be very revealing.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers

Recently I had the opportunity to go to Orlando Florida to watch my mentor and personal coach give the keynote speech at the MOAA Conference. He shared a story about his father and how his father attempted to bridge the gap of years of strain by lovingly placing his hand on his shoulder. His story has made me think of how many children are yearning, hoping for a dad's touch. A dad's love!
I also share a story I had with my own dad where he extended a hand of love and mended a little boy's heart.
I'd love to hear your stories of how you've connected with your dad, or maybe even still trying to figure out how to connect!

Today I want to take a moment to recognize the men and women (and their families) who have given so much for us to enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy. I thought it would be fitting to revisit two episodes with men who are serving or who have services and talk about the challenges of being a dad while serving in the military. In part 1 we will revisit a conversation with my brother Mike Sedrick. He shares the challenge he and his family have experienced when he is deployed on military assignments. Many families experience this challenge so I thought it'd be great to sit down with him to hear some of the things they've done before, during, and after the deployment.
Thank you to all of you men and women who serve our country!

We rarely talk about grief. And as men, we often avoid the conversation entirely. This puts men in a real corner when we lose a loved one - a parent, spouse, friend, and even a child. When confronting we tend to isolate, self-medicate, avoid, and sometimes do all three rather than face the very real emotions associated with losing a loved one.

This past weekend at my daughter Ke'ilani's graduation from UVU I found myself for the first time standing on the outside looking in and it honestly threw me off for a second. Dad has been replaced - which is the pattern of life but the experience caught me completely off guard.
I thought I'd share some feelings about how I'm embracing the reality of my baby girl moving on to the next chapter of her life and actually loving what I see evolving for her and our family.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

This week I ponder several conversations with men who are in the process of going through a divorce. I set those conversations against the ideal of having a strong marriage one that is a true partnership with each other and with God.
Honestly, I wrestled with how to discuss it in a way that all would benefit. I knew there are men who are happily married, divorced, widowed, going through a divorce
Top it off had two conversations with different men going through a divorce that made me even more sensitive to how to deliver it.
A couple of observations
both started with “just friend” relationships on Facebook
Have you become emotionally disconnected through Social media; bikinis, lingerie, porn
Be intentional with your relationship
I don’t go to lunch with other women for business. The women friends I have are our friends
Know when to talk, when to listen, when to press an issue
50/50, 100/100, 180/20
You can do everything right and still the other person can make a choice that destroys your relationship
You be the strength. You be the anchor your kids need (she just wants attention)
Relationships can be messy. They can be beautiful. We get the opportunity and challenge to work through them. What have you done to turn your relationship into a true partnership?
Thanks for listening

Many of you men have worked hard to overcome past failings but how come it's difficult for some people to see who you've become - who you are now?
I dig into some thoughts inspired by the movie Inmate #1 and conversations with my good friend Rigo Santana who left gang life and now is working hard to show young boys and men a better way.
I've been married 34 years this past week. Judie posed the question to me in our podcast "Into The Grey". What would you tell your 18/20-year-old self about relationships, careers, and spirituality? This got me thinking about what I would tell myself as a young man about being a dad and good husband

We don’t talk about depression as men. We have been taught to “man up”, “work through it”, etc. But let’s be real some days we don’t feel like getting up. We don’t want to go to work. A couple of weeks ago I told my daughter “I love you” as you walked out the door. She quickly replied, “Only because I let you in!” I’ve thought A LOT about that playful interaction. Finally I asked Cynsha to sit down and explore the process we’ve gone through of letting each in to each other’s hearts and truly learning to learn how to love each other. I’m not going to lie it’s been a turbulent road at times but I wouldn’t trade what we’ve become for anything.

We are taught as men to “man up”, “push it aside”, “be a man” and so many other phrases that have taught us to push our feelings aside, to bury them deep. Unfortunately that burying of emotion has cause men to retreat, lash out, become abusive and are the largest percentage of individuals to commit suicide. We have to do better about teaching our boys and men to acknowledge their feelings, give them a space to express what is on their heart, and teach them how to productively deal with those emotions. This week I had a four conversations with men working through significant challenges in their life ranging from marriage difficulties to serious health challenges with children. How do you face these challenges? How do you work through them when you're not sure you're making the right decions to change things? I've come to the realization all challenges stem from three core areas. Recognizing these can help you overcome challenges and turn them into blessings for you and your family.

I know we've been having some really heavy but needed conversations. After my last episode where I talked to my son Christian about how dealing with attempted teen suicide in our family my good friend and mentor Shon Hart reached out to me. He wanted to have both of us on his podcast "A Father's Heart". The conversation with him and co-host Cole Williams exposed things I didn't even know occurred with my son and his own feelings of considering suicide. This conversation made me realize I can't be everywhere so I have to build a family where we can all rely on each other. This is just an important topic and a great conversation that I had to share with you guys.

Suicide and attempted suicide can affect a family in ways that you can't imagine. It can also provide opportunities for coming together as a family, self-discovery, and growth. I sit down with my son Christian Sedrick and we explore his experience, insight and moral code that he's set as a guiding light for his life.
I know this is a heavy discussion but hope that the conversation will help you and your family through a dark time.

This week I have the opportunity to escape to Los Angeles to spend a weekend by myself on my son's sailboat. I specifically came to spend some time writing my second book. It has been a great escape to write, ponder, research, reflect, walk on the beach, and pray.
In my musings, my thoughts kept coming back to a man who I have mad respect who I've tried to have as a guest on the podcast. For personal reasons, he has been reticent to do that. I think because he's not happy with some of the decisions he made earlier in his life and the impact those have had on his previous marriage and kids.
I think we often judge ourselves out of the lens of yesterday which obscures and distorts our vision of who we truly have become. Today we explore thoughts around this because Dad you are doing better than you give yourself credit.

This weekend I had the PHENOMENAL opportunity to go down to Lancaster, CA to watch my son’s first music concert. What an incredible opportunity to see him perform. It was a moment of triumph for him to realize a dream. I love what he said after the concert, “It went exactly like I imagined it would! I’m so glad you came!”
I had a profound experience watching him and other performers. I had a unique experience with a comedian that made me reflect on the POWER of a dad being there to watch their kids tap into their gifts, no matter their age. I explore some thoughts from our conversation with the intent to help you look inward to make sure you’re not missing out on moments with your kids.

Men don't miss moments with your kids because they don't fit your idea of manly. You might even think the activity is downright "girly".
Yes, I've played dress-up, had tea parties, and most recently had a full pedicure with my daughter Cynsha. What interests your kids may not align with your traditional idea of masculinity but I promise you that if you set aside your pride, and embrace the experience, you will have an amazing experience.
Plus you actually might enjoy that which you've previously thought is "girly". Most importantly you will create an opportunity to connect with your daughter on an entirely new level.

The Slap Felt Across The World
We were all are surprised, taken aback, and mentally floored by the "entanglement" with Will Smith and Chris Rock at Academy Awards. Mike Lewis and I get together to talk about the hurricane of emotions many men are suppressing don't either know how or have an avenue to work through the mental stresses they are working through. We are told to "Buck up", "be a man", and "it's not that bad" but never taught how to deal with the very real emotions that everyone faces. Don't think this is a problem men account for two-thirds of all suicides. We need to have the serious conversation for men and their families.
We'd love to hear your insight.

This week I explore some personal thoughts as I’ve been reading the book “Battle Cry - Wagin and Winning The War Within”. It’s given me the opportunity to look inward. I find that a lot of men have been conditioned, taught, and encouraged to suppress their feelings. We have a world of men who want to open their hearts but are not sure how — that if they do that they will be perceived as weak, unmanly, or that it will be used against them.
I explore some of my thoughts and pull a clip from my interview with RJD The Imperfection Gentleman to help us look at the walls we’ve built around our hearts and how we can be to tear those down to create a true connection with our kids and wife.

As you know if it's summer and family is in town we are on the lake wake surfing and tubing. This week my daughter asked me if I wanted to try wake surfing with her standing on my shoulders. Short version - we tried and succeeded. Long version I got thinking about how we as dads serve as a foundation for our kids. This led me to ponder seven key foundations we need to provide and build in our kids.
Join me as i explore these 7 things you need to teach them to give them a solid foundation.
I'd love to hear your perspective. What would you add to the list?

Let's face it you will inevitably face tense conversations with your kids, where you will not see eye to eye. You may have noticed this more as your kids moved from pre-teen to teen to young adult. It's easy to slide in "I'm the Dad" mode, or dismiss what they bring to the table, to not see their perspective, to see that they are becoming individuals in their own right. How we navigate these conversations is critical to fostering a safe harbor of conversation, it can also shed light on our own need to grow, evolve, and become better as a dad and even as a man.
Join me as I explore 5 areas that will help you develop Eyes to See, Eyes to Understand, and Eyes to Connect

My man Wil Fossett and I met on Friday night to go a little deeper on a picture he posted earlier in the week of a man clipping the wings of his child while his wife looked on. When he posted the picture he asked, "What does this picture say to you?" I'm telling you this picture hit me hard and it lead to some very thought-provoking conversations and mediation.
This what I posted to his original question:
"It literally makes me cringe! Why? My first thought is don't hurt that child. Don't you dare cut his natural gifts? It makes me think of how many parents, how many dads, are trying to cut their kids in their image instead of seeing the gifts God gave them and teaching them to tap into their gifts so they can truly fly - to truly soar.
Why clip their wings when their wings are precisely what is needed to lift someone else up. Your job as a parent, in particular a dad, is to teach them correct principles so they can then govern themselves and tap in, in a way that God intended. Can you imagine what would happen if the parent taught him principles of flight - lift, thrust, drag, weight? He could truly soar in a way your limited mind can barely imagine. And yet, if you can see his potential and place him in a position that he can learn and tap into his gift, oh who will he become? Who will he bless?
We need to give our child a safe place to stretch his wings, to try them out, to discover what can be done so he can soar the way God intended.
Dad, DON'T clip those wings!"
And on a related note don't dare clip the wings of your beautiful wife!
This is the audio from our Facebook Live on Friday. We had a couple of video streaming challenges. I've tried to splice it together for reposting so you don't have to wrestle through the start and stopping, I wanted to capture the essence of our conversation because I think it is so important.
We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Men your kids are watching how you love, care, and serve your wife. This week I share a couple of very personal experiences with my dad in which he not only told me how much he loved my mom but showed me that she was the Queen of his world.
Are you in continual pursuit of your wife? Do your kids see you make your wife THE priority in your life? Or has your attention waned or turned to other things? When you were first starting pursuing her years ago you put all of your energies into proving you were the one. Is she the interest of your heart? Is she still the queen of your life?
Perhaps the reason your relationship has stagnated is you’ve stopped pursuing her with all your heart.
Fathers is there an urgency in the way you love, serve, and care for your children and your wife? If you are divorced, do you treat your ex with respect and courtesy especially in front of your children. Remember men your kids are watching. Are you living a pattern of love that is worthy of emulation?

The outpouring of comments, support, and questions for last week's episode of "A Dad's Experience with Suicide" has motivated me to create a follow-up episode. I thought I'd share some practical tools that we've put in place to protect not only our loved one struggling with suicidal thoughts but also ensure the safety and well being of other members of the family.
A few highlights:
If you have any comments or have personal experiences you would like to share please reach out to me at fathersfyre@gmail.com or direct message me on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook.
Events have occurred this week that have pushed me to share some very personal experiences and thoughts about suicide. Many families are faced with teens, younger children, mothers, and even fathers who wrestle with suicidal thoughts and related mental health issues. These thoughts are very personal and have debated what to share for some time as I want to be respectful of my own family members but also the seriousness of the issue.
I truly hope something that I share with you today will be of help to you and your family. If you need a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a heart to pray with please give me a shout.

What a phenomenal action-packed, fun-filled, family celebration of 4th of July, graduations, and taking my daughter to down to UVU to kick off another semester of college and D1 Volleyball.
After a full day of flying stand by and walking into my home, I drop my bags by the door, walk into our bedroom kiss my beautiful wife and then collapse on our living room couch. The peace and serenity of home envelop me and I think "It's so good to be home!". Have you felt that? Do you feel that when you come home?
Laying on the couch, basking in being home I asked myself what am I doing to make it feel like home for my wife and kids. When they come home do they feel like it's good to be home? That it's good to be with Dad not just mom? That it's good to fall into my arms.
Join me as we explore what we are doing or not doing to truly create a home.

This week my heart has been weighed down by the events, we've witnessed since the murder of George Floyd. My heart and mind have been turned to our own experiences with the judicial system over the past 18 months. I must admit that my assumptions and naivety have been jolted into a new reality. These combined with what we've witness over the past couple weeks has caused me to ask the question, "Have we become moral monsters?" In our anger, frustration, and anger have we lost our humanity. Have we lost sight that we are all growing? We all stumble. That we all need grace.
I hear the call with for justice. But our calls for justice really have morphed into demands for punishment. When did we lose the importance and power of mercy?
I hope this episode causes serious reflection. I hope it causes you to look inward. I hope it helps you become a better man and father. If we can't be honest with ourselves, our own biases how can we ever help our children to become more?
I'd love to hear your comments.
Your friend,
Jody

Have a great week.
This is a special episode of FathersFyre. I’ve gathered 4 men who I respect to discuss the recent murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis. I wanted to have a diverse group of men who we could have a discussion about how we are having the difficult discussions with our kids about the murder we all witness as well as the ensuing protest and looting across many cities across the country.
My guests are Damon Rich, Rick Kolb, and Nate Furlong. This was originally broadcast life on Facebook Live. I have published it on YouTube, Anchor.FM and other major podcast platforms.
Please join us as we have an open, candid, and very raw discussion.
This week has been extremely challenging in the face of the murder of George Floyd. Ive had many discussions with my own children as we all try to reconcile the horrify murder that we witnessed. I thought I’d share some tips on how you can answer the questions that are searing your children’s hearts and help them come to a place of peace, resolution and action.

Hey, ladies Happy 21st Day of Mother's Day May.
Infants, toddlers, young kids to teens all bring their unique tests of a mother's love. I know many days you wonder "am I making an impact?", "Am I ruining my kids?", "What did I do?","Am I a good mom?" At times the journey of motherhood leaves you in a dark cloud of self-doubt and wonder. It also filled with beautiful moments of sucker sweet kisses, dandelion flowers, and tender snuggles sitting on the couch. You ARE having an impact! You truly are amazing and we love you!

Happy 20th Day of Mother's Day May!
Today I'm reflecting on your amazing ability to continually extend the arms of love and support to your children no matter the distance. When kids are young they don't appreciate mom's constant yearning to be near them viewing it as smothering. But as you get older, and mom get's older you really yearn for that connection. Thank you mom's for all you do.

This week I sit down with Kenneth Nelson Jr. writer, director, and producer of the film Sincerely, Brenda. We explore the genesis of his film that explores a recovering alcoholic’s attempts to bridge the gap between his estranged boys upon the unexpected death of their mom. It’s an emotional, hard look at what many families face or have gone through dealing with alcoholism.
I HIGHLY recommend Sincerely, Brenda. I am so grateful to interview Kenneth. His movie highlights the hard-hitting, painful journey that the fallout of alcoholism plagues many families. I think one of the things that were reinforced to me is that change is a difficult process both for the person addicted and those with their circle. The process of mending hearts can hurtful. Learning how to forgive and extending love when the walls of hurt are raw, real, close to the heart, and difficult to break down that making amends can be a slow but capable process.
I think you’re going to love this episode. Please send me an email with any thoughts or if you would like to discuss something you are struggling within your family.

I love this time of year! Thanksgiving and Christmas bring me so much joy and fun with my family and friends. Naturally this week my heart is turned with greater intent on being grateful. Inspired by an activity in Shon Hart’s Facebook Group 90 Days to Dominate Your Lane I thought I’d write a letter to my dad telling him why I’m grateful for him. I hope it generates thoughts of gratitude for the dad or man in your life that has had a significant impact on your life:
Thanks Dad for:

Life can be SUPER demanding. Juggling between work, running your business, pursuing our own hobbies, taking kids to soccer, basketball, volleyball or dance can have you feeling like you running around like a chicken with out ahead.
Seeing this pattern in our life Judie and I decided take our kids out on a date once a month. Every month we each take one kid on a date. These aren't fancy or expense but they are a lot of fun and give us some valuable one on one time with our kids.
Ideas for Dad Dates
Set a budget and get creative. The key is let them pick and roll with it.

This week I share some insights into our journey beginning the process of adopting. We literally were racing the clock and astonished at the hoops we had to get the process started. As part of the process we had to go through psych evals, credit checks, background checks, and parenting classes. In one of the classes they had us watch two of the most depressing videos about adoption. On the way home I asked Judie, "What don't they want us to adopt? In love all thing are possible." Little did I know yes in love all things are possible but love is hard.

I probably need to do an entire series on our journey adopting, like most people is an interesting one. I thought I’d share one of the many steps that laid the groundwork for two children coming into our home - our oldest son Devon's Eagle Project. This is not only a story of service but one that literally opened my son's understanding of other people and cultures.
A couple of lessons from this experience:
This also was one of the many steps that led to our adopting two beautiful children into our home. Let your kids dream and act big. You never know where their dreams will take them and your family will most definitely be blessed as well.

This week I share an experience I had with my dad that cemented in my mind the importance of treating your wife like a queen. My brother was being extremely rude, demeaning and condescending to my mom when my dad walked in. My dad walked straight up to my brother, put his finger on his chest and said "Don't you ever talk to my sweetheart like that again! Yes she's your momma ..." Check out the rest of the story.

Nobody wants to punish their kids. This week we explore some thought on punishment. Do you bring the hammer down, give love or a combination of the two?
I thought I'd share some creative ways my dad used discipline his 8 kids.
One of the keys things is that my dad always taught us to apologize, to take responsibility, to treat each other with love, kindness and respect.
Dad's remember that it's ok to apologize when you go over board. Take a walk, cool down. Remember it’s ok to be human. You are learning just as much if not more than your kids. Remember no matter what your kids do show increased love so that the develop love and respect for you rather than fear.
