We want to go through it even though it’s about 28 pages because it answers a lot of the questions that parents have about the school safety protocols being put into place and can help with the decision as to whether parents want to bring their kids back to school or not (when that decision is finally allowed).

Ms. Ortiz will be talking about the wearing of masks and hand washing and what parents can do at home to start preparing children for when they come back to school.
Ms. Montoya will be sharing some mental health advice for children since we are still in the COVID time period and children still need to be helped to understand this pandemic through different interventions.

In the last few weeks we have talked with parents and teachers about what it has been like to shelter in at home. Today, we will be chatting with Legacy scholars who will share what it has been like for them!

Today we will be sharing many of the operational things being done behind the scenes to make sure we are able to serve our school community with lunches and instruction. We also will share two videos. The first one is about the need to establish routines and family norms/expectations together and this video shows you how to do this.
Then, we will chat with Buddy Davis, our director of facilities who will share about the new meal pick up schedule that starts next week. Staci Weaver, senior director of school operations is next, with information about the laptop deployment and what to do when the laptop at home has an issue. She will also share how we are working to keep both you and our employees safer through the distribution of meals and instructional packets and the dropoff of those packets each week.
Mr. Chaparro, the MW HS director will share how he and his team were able to get 100% of the scholars their laptops! Good work, Mr. Chaparro and team!
Dr. Mann, the SPED director will talk about how her department is continuing to meet the needs of SPED scholars even in the online instruction world. Finally, Ida Dominguez, the GT/EL coordinator will tell how we are meeting the needs of our English Language Learners as well as the gifted and talented scholars as well.

Today we are going over what Legacy and public education in the state of Texas has accomplished as far as preparing for and executing a meal plan and an instructional plan for our families.
We will touch a bit about what we've accomplished over the last two weeks, what instructional platforms we are using for what grades, and a couple of comments about Google Classrooms you might need to know.
We also have Mesquite nurse Maggie Ortiz and Plano nurse medic Cynthia Ferguson with us with some COVID-19 reminders. They even will chat about what they are doing differently at home to get through this.

We will chat about the need for charter advocacy, share info from the TPCSA association data about the last legislative session, and what Dr. Good has done so far to engage other superintendents in feeling the urgency for this work. Today we will be focusing on one of the many components of Senate Bill 11, which involves security and safety. It requires schools to form threat a campus assessment team. School operations director Staci Weaver will share information on the why, how, what, and when of this threat assessment team. The first activity of this afterschool program happened last week end in both schools. Scholars and their parent(s) slept outside on the school grounds and had fun doing different activities before spending the night in a tent!

Today, Scott Townsend, Legacy STEM Director, and Ms Natasha Forge, Legacy HS Guidance Counselor, will share information on a subject on which we have some alarming data. We will share statistics around suicide, the definition of terms, and the process involved that we must take when we hear about a student's suicidal ideation at school.
We will also reflect on this from a national perspective. We'll share some numbers from sources such as the Center for Disease Control, National Institute of Health, Harvard Medical School.
We will also talk about the main risk factors for suicide, how we can work together with parents when a child has shown suicide ideation, and finally, some prevention techniques of which to be aware.

Legacy Preparatory Charter Academy
The focus of our podcast today is Diabetes. There's Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes which we will identify with short videos. We will learn about what the difference is between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, how the data has changed over the last 40 years around Type 2 diabetes. Even it's name has had to change and it's for a very sad reason.
Our own RN from Mesquite, Ms. Margaret Ortiz, will let us know what happens when we have a child with Type 1 diabetes, and how we work with the family to ensure a seamless transition from one school to another. We will also share what families can do to help decrease the possibility of their family members getting either pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes.
Helping keep our scholars' bodies healthy helps them keep learning at an even higher level!

We’ll start with a history of the Jr ROTC Program and a brief overview of the Jr ROTC Program at LPCA at both the MS and HS level.

The ladies will talk about how they help teachers know when a behavior should be cause for concern.
They will also share what processes are in place for anxiety, suicidal tendencies, cutting, and other social emotional traits, that when caught early, can help the family walk through next steps.
Our wonderful counselors will also share what resources we have available for families who may need them when their child needs addition professional support.
Today we are going to take the long way to chat about school lunches. It's the long way because before we get to the lunches we have at school or should pack for school we need to review today's nutrition and health guidelines.
We will begin with going into the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) website called ChooseMyPlate.gov where we will look at the information they have available on the latest research on healthy eating.
We will touch on -the Dietary Guidelines, Key Elements of Healthy Eating Patterns, Shifts that Need to Align with Healthy Eating, and Who has a Role in Supporting Healthy Eating Patterns.
We will go through the ChooseMyPlate website so you can see how easy it is to use and some of the meal planning and menu planning templates they have to make eating on a budget easier.
Then we will finally talk about what all this means as far as packing a healthy school lunch and some creative ways to help children want to eat their healthy school lunch!
Today we have asked Mr. Clarence Glover aka Professor Freedom to come in help us further frame out the 400th observance of the first enslaved Africans in America which began in Jamestown. (1619 - 2019)
Mr. Glover is a descendant of enslaved Africans with a direct connection to slavery. He will share with us the concept of the dual victims of slavery, the enslaved Africans and the Europeans who came with their flawed entitlement thinking of the right to "own" another human being. He will also talk about his commitment to a multicultural America through some of the opportunities he had as a young man, working in Washing D.C. on Civil Rights issues in the 70's later working with Mrs. Corretta Scott King, Mrs. Rosa Parks, Dr. Bernard Lafayette and other civil rights activists.
In the 80s and early 90s he was part of the push for diversity at SMU. He not only taught courses there, he helped the university with developing a cultural philosophy, practice, and policy which was a first for a major university. Mr. Glover was on the committee while at SMU to help the city of Dallas and Dallas ISD change the term of Black to African American in the late 80's. He then worked on the fallacy of the term RACE. He pushes the concept that we are in fact, all one race, and has the research to prove it. While at SMU, he found the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speech from March 17, 1966 given at SMU in McFarlin Auditorium (now online) and related news articles. He was also the Interviewer and Consultant of The PBS Documentary "In Remembrance of Martin, The First Federal Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Federal Holiday in Atlanta, Georgia 1986
While at Harvard in 1985, he studied with Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg in the Stages of Moral Education and while at Dallas ISD as a multicultural administrator, he trained on the concept of One Race; Many Cultures.
He has been at Legacy now for 6 years, building multicultural institutional capacity to administrators, educators, parents, and scholars. He has helped Legacy develop its own cultural philosophy, policy, and practices.
In his spare time he is working on helping us understand the term predictable cultural conflict (PCC) and social dynamics between people from different cultures.
This will be a fact filled show with pictures and artifacts from the 70s to now to help enrich the dialogue even more.

Today we will revisit School Safety and how it's changed over the last 10 years (or so). Staci Weaver, retired police Officer and current school operations senior director will lead us through the school safety requirements. We will also share what's in place to make the buildings secure.
Other topics today include:
-New safety guidelines passed by the 2019 legislative session and signed by Gov. Abbott
-Different types of drills (and how those have changed during the years)
-Standard Response Protocol- Lockdown, lockout, shelter, hold. We will talk about when each is appropriate and what the procedures are when it's time to practice them.
-Active shooter required drills- The language has not been released, but a requirement of 4 a year is being discussed.
-School Marshal/Guardian-funding and guidelines

Today we will be hearing from the executive director of the Destination Wilderness program, Michael Hooten. Founded in 2012 by Sustainable Education Solutions (SES), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, it seeks to improve the environmental literacy of Dallas families, particularly of it’s youngest scholars. As the sponsoring entity of Destination Wilderness Youth, it’s designed to expand their impact into other public schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. We will be bringing this program at our Mesquite and Plano locations this coming year.

We are back with Behavior Specialist (and Legacy Board Chair and President) Mr. Byron Ricks to continue our series on raising children in single parent homes.
He writes in his book that:
“Boys without fathers feel incomplete. Consciously or not, boys will try to fill the Void. This can manifest itself in many things – promiscuity, pornography, violent behaviors, drugs & alcohol, associating with the wrong crowd and other behaviors that give them short-term fulfillment.”
Today, we will delve into the void left behind when Dad leaves or is just not present. We will talk about the definition of what is meant by the void and behaviors that can manifest due to the void left behind when Dad is not present.
Mr. Ricks will also talk about how parents can help overcome the possibility of children succumbing to "void" behaviors and or how to work with children who are starting to enter into some of these void behaviors.
Our sincere thanks to Mr. Ricks for using his own experience to help our parents understand better the ramifications of not allowing or having Dad in the lives of his children and also for helping our parents know what to do if they are currently in this situation.

As many of you are aware, we are deep into the 86th legislative session in Austin. The 86th Texas Legislature began on January 8, and concludes on May 27, 2019. This happens every two years where our elected senators and house representatives meet to look at needed changes or additions to our current laws.
Today, we will be sharing information about some proposed bills that legislators have asked to be considered, some of which are hurtful to charters. You will also learn what you can do to help stop these hurtful bills.
Starlee Coleman, CEO of the Texas Charter School Association (TCSA), will share the urgency around the needed advocacy to those of us who love and value charters. This includes parents and charter employees.
We will also hear from Michael Aguilar, TCSA Regional Engagement Manager. He will share step by step strategies on how parents and staff can let their legislators know how they feel about certain proposed charter bills that can be either bad or good for the charter school movement.

Hello, everyone! It's time to think about next year already when it comes to making sure we have enough dual language and Spanish teachers. To make sure we have enough bilingual teachers in August we must start now to find them. We'll first be sharing with you you the research behind why we should encourage our children to be bilingual, then why we chose the dual language program as the structure through which to teach more than one language to our K-5 scholars, and finally, how we go about traveling the world to find them. Today we will talk about the state assessment, the STAAR, which stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, and is a series of standardized tests used in Texas public primary and secondary schools to assess a student's achievements and knowledge learned in the grade level.
We will chat with Stacy Maxwell, our district testing coordinator, on the testing logistics for the campuses.She will also talk about the way for parents to best prepare their children for the test weeks in advanced.
Dr. Mann, our Special Populations Coordinator, will also come back and talk to us about the testing of our special populations, the laws around that and the accommodations and modifications we are allowed to offer our special population children.
Matt Nielsen, our IT manager for Legacy will talk about the online testing and how we prepare for it. The Texas Education Agency is moving in the direction of testing totally online in the future. What are the implications around that?

Today we will revisit the important subject of bullying and add cyber bullying to our discussion. Staci Weaver will share some statistics around cyber bullying- what it is, the laws, and what we are doing to prevent/cut down on it at Legacy. Natasha Forge, our HS counselor will share what is bullying vs inappropriate behavior and Amelia Zambrano, our Plano counselor, will talk about what we are doing to prevent/target bullying at the K-8 grades. Finally, Keshunia Johnson, our Mesquite counselor, will talk about how we find and work with scholars who reports feeling suicidal. We are very fortunate to have such valuable assets at Legacy when it comes to helping our children in social emotional areas.

Today we will focus on restorative practice, what it is, and how it plays out on our campuses. We will learn about the history of it and the need to get better at the use of it with our scholars. We will hear from Ms. Kerbow, second grade teacher at Mesquite elementary about the success she has had in scholar behavior using it. We will also hear from Ms. Gabrielle Wallace, administrator at Mesquite’s secondary who has used this practice successfully with children and parents.

Ms. Natasha Forge, our college and career counselor will share the steps needed to go through to begin the transition from high school to college. We will also hear from Ally Spiel, a senior at Plano, who will share the steps she has gone through to get ready for her first day in college!
The holidays are coming up and it's time to focus on informing parents on all the reasons to carve out some study time during the upcoming Thanksgiving and Winter Break holidays.
We'll be sharing tips, resources, and software information we have available to help your child(ren) get ahead and/or stay ahead of the instructional game.

We will have representatives from the North Texas Food Bank, the Collaborative for Fresh Produce, a nonprofit organization that maximizes the amount of surplus produce reaching hungry families and the food banks that serve them, and a Legacy teacher and scholars who are all part of this serving cycle.

Hurricane Irma brushed past the island on the way to Florida as a Category 5 storm Sept. 6, 2017, and then Hurricane Maria made a direct hit as a Category 4 storm two weeks later, damaging up to 75 percent of transmission lines.

We have a real treat in store for you today! Judge John Payton, long time truancy judge for Collin County, will be here today. He'll share how the truancy laws have changed over the last few years and how that impacts schools and families with school aged children. He will also share information about how families can avoid getting into truancy trouble and what happens when they do. Judge Payton will also share what schools can do to help families motivate their children to come to school every day.
Technology is a big part of our world at Legacy. Today we will hear from Legacy’s STEM director, a STEM teacher, and scholars currently taking courses in those fields to hear how the STEM life plays out in the classroom. It’s an amazing world!

We will talk about our MOUs with the local colleges, the prep tests the scholars must take to be able to meet the college readiness requirements, and the opportunities available to this families who are willing to become college and career ready starting in the elementary grades.
