This is a recording of the three speakers at the launch of the ‘From Syria With Love’ Exhibition at Hannahs, Seale-Hayne – 16th January, 2016.
First up is the exhibition’s inspirational creator, Baraa Ehsaan Kouja, a Syrian student at the University of Exeter whose life has been transformed by working with refugees.
Second to talk is former Hannahs art teacher Alexa Smith, who has recently returned from ‘The Jungle’ in Calais where she worked as a volunteer and was profoundly affected by the experience.
The third contribution comes from Ahmed, a former UN worker, who fled Syria and embarked on a terrifying journey across several European countries, at one point finding himself chest-deep and close to death in a locked flour lorry, and ultimately seeking refuge in Grimsby in the face of bemused police and subsequently MI5.
All present a very personal and mostly harrowing perspective on a global humanitarian crisis to which more and more of us are awakening and feeling inspired, though often powerless, to help.

The subject we discussed was independence in the community, and whether people with learning disabilities are better off with their families or living independently. Of course, we have our usual mixture of music and features, and we hope you enjoy this latest edition of Uniting Friends Radio!
Three Day Pop Up Live Broadcast for Parkfields Xtreme Radio
Torbay’s only young person run radio station will be taking part in a three day live pop up FM radio event to celebrate and showcase the young presenter’s achievements.
The three day live broadcast will be starting on Wednesday 26 August and will be running until the evening of Friday 28 August 2015. The broadcast will be live on 87.9 FM for the three days and will see the young people continue their partnership building by involving young people from other youth groups and schools from across Torbay who have been taught radio skills by the Xtreme Radio young people. The broadcast will include music, information about local events and topics that matter to young people.
Parkfield Xtreme Radio , which is run by young people aged from 9 to 16 years old and is based at Parkfield in Paignton, currently broadcasts live shows every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday via the internet but this pop up event is the first time they have broadcasted on an FM frequency. By broadcasting this way it provides a better audience experience and makes the shows feel more local.
Councillor Julien Parrott, Executive Lead for Adults and Children said: “It is great to see how this group of young people have developed Parkfield Xtreme Radio and this three day pop up broadcast gives them the perfect platform to show how far the group have come on. By continuing to develop their own radio skills and then also passing these skills and knowledge onto other young people means that this project will continue to grow and provide a channel for them to raise awareness of what matters to them.
Kate Rudman from Sound Communities said: “This event is the culmination of over two years worth of learning for the young people as they have been developing their radio skills and taking part in online broadcasts leading up to this. This is a great step forward for them and the radio station, as it is really growing, and that now means they are not only based in Paignton but are broadcasting live from many other youth clubs based in Torbay.”
Parkfield Xtreme Radio, which is funded by the National Lottery and developed in partnership with Torbay Council and Sound Communities Community Interest Company, aims to support young people in the area by giving them a voice, raising their aspirations, increasing their employability and connecting them through their love of music.
The youth groups and schools that will be taking part in this three day event include the Acorn Centre, Totally Teenagers, Brixham’s The Edge, Oldway Primary School, Torbay Youth Parliament, Children In Care and many more.
The station broadcasts music, issue-based and sports-related programming all aimed at and produced by young people. Parkfield Xtreme Radio presenters also produce Parklife, a slot with features on local events and a listing show funded by the Torbay Youth Cultural Partnership to let young people across the bay know what’s going on for them and help them to respond to and shape local cultural arts events. With hate crime on the increase, we thought it only right to bring this matter to your attention and discuss it accordingly. On a lighter note, this was our first show to be broadcast live... Another milestone for Uniting Friends Radio!

The Quad Polling Station will be open on 29th April 10am-2pm.
