In this culture of violence we live in today it becomes the responsibility of all individuals to ask themselves how we each contribute. If we are to be the agents of change we need to "uproot the causes of violence" and inspire change for the greater good. Joining us in this conversation Lori Jump, Executive Director of Stronghearts Native Helpline, a national hotline serving Indian Country and Alaska Natives and Diane Kinney from Circle Vermont, an hotline and crisis support for victims of domestic violence in Washington County, Vermont.

Lori Jump, a citizen of the Sault [pronounced: Soo) Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is the Director of the StrongHearts Native Helpline. She brings a wealth of tribal advocacy experience to StrongHearts having worked for 25+ years as the Program Manager of the Advocacy Resource Center (ARC). The ARC is a comprehensive victim services program for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe, providing advocacy, shelter and civil legal representation for victims of domestic and sexual violence. Lori is also a founding member and former Executive Director of Uniting Three Fires Against Violence, Michigan’s tribal coalition. UTFAV provides training, technical assistance and resources to support tribal programs in responding to domestic and sexual violence. Lori now serves as a board member for UTFAV.

She brings many years of experience and advocacy for victims of domestic violence. Circle provides 7 day a week hotline for victims. Diane is also on the board of directors for Vermont Network, a group of non-profit membership organizations which provide domestic and sexual assault advocacy to survivors of domestic violence in Vermont.

In today's edition of Moccasin Tracks we entitle the topic as,"Indigenous Unity In The Dawnland: Wampum, Calumet and Confederacies." The feature guest Paul-Rene Tamburro reminds us about common knowledge back in the day and and what brought the people together. The importance of wampum and some historical background of the confederacies of the Northeast.
Paul-Rene Tamburro, anthropologist and Indigenous researcher who is also Abenaki. We talk about identity and some of the ways people are identifying. Here is more info from Paul Rene's website, "The name Sunrise Drum combines the Wbenaki (People of the Dawn or Sunrise) with Paul-Rens last name meaning drum. His Abenaki name translated also contains the word drum: Mjassadop Spiwi Pakholigan " Began with a Drum. This name, given to him during his adolescent years while a participant in the East Coast Powwow circuit reflects the large amount of time spent sitting at the drum learning Northern, Southern and Eastern song traditions.There are many people with Indigenous NorthAmericanblood, tribal/ band enrollments, or DNA " but the languages and cultures are disappearing fast. For this reason, he earnedgraduate degrees in anthropology, linguistics,and social work.Paul-Ren has taught courses at numerous universities and colleges including Indiana University, Indiana State University and Purdue University in Indiana, The Evergreen State College(TESC) and Heritage University in Washington State, University College of the Cariboo and Thomson Rivers University (TRU) in in Kamloops BC, Canada and others. At TRU , Paul-Ren was hired to work on an initiative to add Indigenouscontent into their social work program. Mi'kmaq author,teacher,musician Evan Pritchard joins us on Moccasin Tracks, May 29, 2018 in this edition featuring music from his CD River Song; Canoe Song and A Prayer In My Heart we talk about his new publications, music and programs that Evan is hosting and producing in the New York area.
A Historian and researcher, Evan shares with us about a project he is working on to interpret very old recordings of Mi'Kmaq songs from 1520. He speaks to an instrument made from ash wood that makes clacking sounds as the songs were sung probably for ceremony. He encourages us to write to him with questions. He graphically describes the values and struggles of an Indian warrior as a 'soldier' in a modern American war. As an Indian AA counselor and school administrator he used traditional insights that were leading and successful. The breadth of his interest and insights provides a living example of a traditional Lakota who has successfully overcome many problems and found a peaceful, successful life in the current bicultural situation of the Lakota.

It can sing the most beautiful songs, if you listen well. She can sound like a male voice, especially during huge waves. It ebbs and flows leaving us messages in her journey throughout life. We are connected and united to life with water, and as we are all united by water; it seems we must be conscious of all things united.This connections or linkage helps us understand life and what it gives to humans, nature and animals. We are all so connected, so united with/by water. It is all life. To see how water can mold itself to any situation, we can see it in any shape we put it in: jars, small containers, huge gallons - it flows to any shape or form. We are all connected by water and as we are all of water: 70 or 80% of our body mass, why can't we flow like the water? to unite ourselves with each other, to sing like the water, to think like the water, to be of one conscious entity? Why can't we? IF we could be, we will be one big ocean of love, kindness, respect, united and jelled together as one, we will be the generation to save our Mother.
Science is slowly catching up to our anishinabe thinking about our natural laws as governed to us by Creation/Creator. Our duty and responsibility is to our Mother's care and well being. The common denominator of life is Water. In our Mide Lodge we know all this from the teachings and oral inscriptions left by our ancestors, but we have not been vocal enough to tell the world and science that we know what they are collecting as new science. It is not new knowledge, or new understanding. it's been around as long as our Mide ancestors have been on this Mother earth. Our ancestors knew where water comes from, whence it flows, and how it flows. This is all understood in our waters songs and Lodge creation story. How can we tell the world that science is in our Mide Lodge?
Is it time to open the doorway to the Lodge so they can hear? Let's all think about this !! Josephine Mandamin
