There is a difference, isn't there? One moment you are going about your day, and then the phone rings. And then you see the number. Depending on what you see, your response will vary. Because there is a difference.
For some, you recognise their number; their name comes up on your phone screen, and you are happy to talk to them.
For others, it is a number you don't recognise, or 'Private number' or even worse 'Suspected scam' appears on a glowing red screen. Does your finger go to the answer or reject icon, or do you allow it to ring through to your voicemail box?
Let's face it- there is a difference in the way we respond to a call, depending on our relationship with the caller.
But have you ever wondered about how God responds to a non-believer praying? What is the response to someone cold calling God?

What if prayer isn’t a last resort, but a way of becoming more honest, grounded and open to help? This message explores why prayer matters — not as religious performance, but as a deeply human practice of relationship, trust and learning to live with purpose.

When Mary and I were newlyweds and back in the day of the tape answering machines, I would record funny messages, sometimes in the voice of Yogi Bear or other characters. But the one that got me most caught out was when I recorded the message: "Hello. hello, can you hear me? Hello. Sorry I can't hear you, please leave a message after the beep." Only to have a dear older lady from the church ask if we had been having problems with our phone, as she had been trying to call me all week without success.
But when it comes to prayer, we can find ourselves in a similar predicament. We can wonder- Is there anyone there?
Yet according to the Guardian, "one in five adults pray despite saying they are not religious. " Perhaps you may fit into that group?
Today, we begin our services called Prayer 101 as we look at the topic: Is anyone there?

It has either been said about you, by you, or you have bitten your tongue as you thought it:
“I told you so!”
You have warned someone, or predicted to someone, that something might happen, and then it does. Perhaps you have hidden your smug smile – or perhaps not.
“I told you so!”
You’ve been proven right. But as we will discover in today’s message, just because you are proven right doesn’t mean you are not wrong.

Who deserves grace? Who deserve a second chance? These can be difficult choices to make. The distinction between good and bad can be quickly become blurred.
The debate is currently raging throughout Victorian and Australian politics of how to deal with young offenders. There are reasonable arguments on both sides of these debates. Some highlight the importance of grace and forgiveness; others community safety.
Thankfully, we have a God who cares about every part of this world. And even better, as such decisions are beyond our wisdom, the ultimate decisions of who receives grace and gets a second chance are not up to us, but up to our Creator alone.

Jonah was called by God to go to Nineveh, but he fled in the opposite direction and now needs to be rescued from the belly of a fish. And God is faithful and gracious to Jonah.
What would it look like for us to be faithful and gracious to those around us?

There is a story in the Old Testament about a man named Jonah. Have you heard of Jonah? And if you know anything about Jonah’s story – there is a very famous character – more famous than Jonah.
The Big Fish.
Now there are all kinds of things that can be said about the details of the big fish – where is there such a big fish? Could it be a whale shark? Did they live in that part of the world? How would one person even survive inside a fish?
So many questions that might be in your mind or resting in scepticism within you.
And yet – I want to say to you this morning – don’t let the big fish stump you. Don’t get stuck on it. Don’t let the big fish get in the way of what God might be saying and doing in and through this story.
Now the story of Jonah begins with God’s call on his life. Let’s take a look together.

I wonder whether you have ever done it. For some, the thought of doing it is disturbing or creepy; for others, doing it is clarifying.
Have you ever done it – taken a walk through a cemetery and looked at the headstones? Looked at the names, the dates and the epitaph, the short tribute to those who have died or perhaps a message to the living.
And then have you ever stopped to think what you would want to have written below your name and two dates?
Today, we discover that how we live often reflects what lives on in our legacy.

What does courage look like when doing the right thing comes at a cost? Drawing on the remarkable true story of Corrie ten Boom, who risked everything to protect Jewish families during World War II and Elisha in the Old Testament, this message explores fear, moral courage, non-violence, and the choice to stand with vulnerable people when it would be easier to stay silent. Whether you consider yourself religious or not, it’s an invitation to reflect on the kind of people we want to be—and the courage it takes to act with compassion when it matters most.

Attitude – I don’t have an attitude problem. You have a problem with my attitude. That’s not my problem. Or Today’s attitude, brought to you by coffee and sarcasm.
Or perhaps you have come across someone with this sort of attitude, when Elena and her dad were playing in 2021. Elena is two foot tall with ten feet of attitude.
As Lou Holtz is quoted: “Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”
Having the right attitude can make a world of difference. But have you ever considered that having the right attitude can also make a difference in the world?

Just before Christmas last year, Greg lost his keys. We worked out they were missing as we were heading to bed… quite late for us. But when something like car keys are missing you need to find them. So, we looked. We retraced steps and we looked. And looked. Greg remembered our daughter had brought the keys in from the car and so we thought, maybe she put them somewhere. But she was sleeping. Do we wake her or not?
Well, after an hour of looking we decided to wake her. It did not help. She could not remember and to be honest I do not really think she was awake.
We felt like they must be in the house, but we just could not find these keys. Greg needed them to drive to work in the morning. So, we began to work out a plan for how we would solve this problem. He could get up extra early, drive our car to his company office – an hour away – get spare keys – drive back and then start his day. That would mean leaving our home at 4am. It sounded terrible to me.
So, I thought, you know, I am just going to have one last look. And as I did, I hate to tell you, but it wasn’t till this moment that I prayed about it. I said to God that we really needed these keys. Could he please help me have eyes to see them. Well, you know, I looked up from praying and there on the Christmas tree were the keys, hanging on the branch like an ornament.
Now, in a world where there are wars, famines, natural disasters, really big things going – is it right that I pray about our lost keys? Or is that a bit too small an issue to take to God?

According to a report published by the University of NSW and the Australian Council of Social Service, in the years of 2022 - 2023, 14.2% of Australians were living below the poverty line. That is approximately 3.7 million people, including 757,000 children, who lack the financial means to afford what we consider basic human needs such as food, shelter, healthcare, and clothing.
Despite reductions in unemployment numbers from 2017 - 2023, the poverty rate actually increased, and there is no question that things are going to keep getting tougher for the most vulnerable in our society as people struggle to make ends meet.
For those within this 14.2%, individuals and families, who are unable to adequately support themselves despite receiving government assistance, might wonder, “Where is God in all this? Does God not care for the poor and the oppressed?”

According to the Australian social research organisation McCrindle, "With the rise in the non-religion and spirituality, one might worry that Australia is becoming increasingly processive, moving away from traditional Christian values and celebration, like Easter. However, this is not quite the case.
Despite the move away from traditional forms of religion, Australians are still holding strong to the core beliefs. Not only do more than one in two (58%) Australians believe in a higher power/God, miracles (60%) and life after death (59%) but a quarter (24%) are certain that Jesus Christ, the centre of the Easter celebration, rose from the dead. A further 20% believe it is possible that Jesus Christ rose from the dead".

Sometimes reflections are so perfect it’s hard to tell in a photo which is the real thing, and which is the reflection.
The way we live our lives reflect our values, priorities and attitudes. It reflects our beliefs and biases. As followers of Jesus, our lives are called to stand out, to be set apart to reflect God’s values priorities and attitudes. But often, it’s hard to tell the difference between someone who has strong ethics and a deep value of people and someone who has chosen to follow Jesus, especially in our society.
So, what does it look like to live a life that declares our faith and commitment to Jesus?

I wonder what brought you to live where you live?
For some, it can be for work. A new job requires a change of location. A new relationship has you move to be with the one you love. For others, it is upsizing or downsizing.
Often, there are times in our lives when we long for a fresh start. A relationship has gone sour, so to clear the air and create some space, we move to a new location. Perhaps we don’t like who we have become, and so to trigger a change in ourselves, we move.
It seems to me that there are times when running from our past is as futile as running from our shadow.
Changes in geography may be a factor in creating a fresh start. But I believe a fresh start has less to do with our feet and more to do with our head and our heart.

The cost of living affects us all with the food prices affected by the drought or floods, increases in the petrol prices caused by the war in the Middle East, rises in the interest rates and so on. However, the impact of these rising costs varies at different stages of life. For example, young families with children experience financial pressures differently from retirees, as their needs and lifestyles are not the same.
So, what does this mean for us as we navigate the day to day pressures of living costs? Today, our guest speaker, David, will share some principles that may help us respond wisely to the challenges of daily living.

In 1992 400m Sprinter Derek Redmond from Great Britain was in Barcelona ready to make his Olympic dream come true. Unable to compete four years earlier due to injury, he was determined to capitalise on a run of good health and good form. He ran a personal best time in the quarter-final to easily win his heat, and if he could produce a similar run in the semis, he would be on his way to an Olympic final.
However, about 250m into the semi-final, tragedy struck, as a tear in his right hamstring stopped him in his tracks and he fell to the ground in pain. His chances of winning an Olympic final and maybe even an Olympic medal were now over, but Derek was determined that what would turn out to be his last Olympic campaign would not end with the dreaded DNF next to his name (which stands for did not finish).
He forced himself to his feet, and began hobbling towards the finish line, with about 150m still left to go. As he made his way slowly towards the finish line, there came a figure bursting out from the crowd, brushing away officials and security guards alike, as he sprinted towards the track. Derek’s father, Jim, was determined that nothing would stop him from reaching his son. Together, they limped towards the finish line, Jim faithfully supporting his son Derek as Derek cried out from pain and grief, leaning on his father for support. As they crossed the finish line, the crowd of 65,000 people erupted with a standing ovation to show their support at the incredible display of strength, perseverance and love that they had just witnessed.
Unfortunately, Derek was officially disqualified for finishing with the assistance of another, but it was a mere technicality. Nobody could take that moment away from Derek and his father, and a legend was born there and then from an Olympic athlete who never won an Olympic medal but captured the hearts of millions of sports fans around the world. In the words of Derek himself, “I Finished Last, but I Finished.”
Today we will be exploring what it means to finish well, in a time where perseverance is often compromised by increasingly short attention spans and busier day-to-day lives.

We understand that as people and as followers of Jesus, our decisions matter – they are important and we want to live life well and part of that means we need to learn to choose well. We make decisions and then, as we choose - our decisions make us. The challenge is many of us, we're not great decision-makers. Pre-deciding is focussing on intentionally selecting our values and attitudes and growing them so that they influence all our decisions. Instead of waiting until we are faced with those big crossroads choices, where we know there will be heightened emotion and stress, we decide now. That’s the concept of pre-deciding. And in this series, we are focussing on six statements, six choices that will help us become the kind of people who live life well.

God is generous, and the Bible is full of examples of people, motivated by goodness, to emulate this - King David poured out gifts from the national
treasury and then from his personal reserves. A poor widow gave everything she had. A woman prepared a room for a traveling prophet. A group of impoverished Macedonians gave more than they dreamed they could.
This morning, we will examine Ruth’s loyalty and her own generosity

To say Australia is a land of extremes sometimes seems like an understatement. With extreme heat in the Southeast and Eastern Australia, on Tuesday, Mildura is predicted to nudge up to 50 degrees and Melbourne in the low 40s. Up north WA, they are wrestling with a cyclone.
It is part of the reason why Government and emergency response agencies encourage people in areas prone to natural disasters to be prepared. To have a bag ready to go at a moment's notice.
Even iconic landmarks are getting ready for catastrophic events.
But when it comes to the decisions we make, can being ready make a difference in helping us to live life well?

"I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway."
These are the words the apostle Paul writes to the church in Rome. He is describing what management theorists and life coaches call the Knowing-Doing gap.
The Knowing-Doing gap can apply to individuals, to organisations or systems and it refers to the disconnection we can experience between understanding what you should do and actually doing it. I know for my health I should eat less chocolate and run more often. Actually, doing that though is difficult. That’s the gap.
And we can experience that Knowing-Doing gap as we live out our faith – that’s what Paul’s words speak about. If we want to live life well – we know that we need to spend time with God, we know we need to cultivate the fruits of the spirit, that living life well means living as people who are loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful and have self-control. And yet – actually doing it? We know we are called to be compassionate and generous, especially to those in our society who are experiencing disadvantage – but are we DOING it?
How can we start to bridge the knowing-doing gap.

Devotion sets direction. What we are devoted to quietly shapes the path we take—not usually in one dramatic moment, but little by little over time. The things we give our attention to, the things we return to, and the things that fill our thoughts and our time shape our priorities, our values, and the way we live. That’s why devotion matters so much to God.
Today, I will talk about how devotion guides our decisions and directs our days.

In the words of the philosopher, Dr Seuss, " Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!"
"You have brains in your head, You have feet in your shoes, You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."
"You won't lag behind because you'll have the speed. You'll pass the whole gang, and you'll soon take the lead. Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest."
"Except when you don't. Because, sometimes, you won't. I'm sorry to say so but sadly, it's true, that Bang-up and Hang-ups can happen to you."
For the average person the Western World, we are faced with, on an average 35,000 decisions per day. If you were to survey a group of parents, chances are that the highest response to the question, " I just want my child to be ..." would be "I just want my child to be -happy".
So today, if you find yourself chewing on life's gristle, then, according to the Life of Brian, "give a whistle" and "always look on the bright side of life".
Or perhaps if we reflect on the tension around achieving happiness with the philosopher, Sheryl Crow, "If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad. If it makes you happy, then why the hell are you so sad?"
We discover that pursuing the emotion of happiness can be superficial. When, what we really need to do is go much deeper.

What does hope look like for you? For some, hope looks like a lottery ticket or a Scratchie.
For me, hope looks like McLaren in Formula 1. Bruce McLaren, a Kiwi racing driver, founded McLaren F1 in 1963. I became a fan, being introduced to F1 and the team by the Melvins, who attended the first church I pastored at Enoggera in QLD in the late 90s. That was perfect timing because it also coincided with when they stopped winning constructors' championships.
But I lived in hope, and last year and this year McLaren won, and I continue to hope that either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri will win the driver's championship next weekend.
We can find hope in all sorts of places. What gives you hope, and how do you give hope to others?

This morning, we begin with a well-known story, and it goes like this:
Once upon a time there was a hare who lived in the forest. He was a speedy runner and loved to race others to prove he was the fastest.
“I’m so fast, no one can beat me” He would say to anyone that would listen.
One day, Hare was boasting about his talent when a small voice said,
“You’ve never raced me.” It was Tortoise.
“YOU, the slowest in the forest? Race ME?” Hare laughed. “This is going to be the easiest race ever.” Hare said, “First one to reach the end of the meadow on the other side of the forest is the winner!”
The other animals in the forest set up a starting line and one shouted, Ready Set Go!
As soon as the race began, Hare hopped off into the distance, quick as a flash. But tortoise barely moved from the starting line. When Hare reached the big oak tree on the edge of the meadow, tortoise was nowhere in sight. Hare was so sure of himself and his ability that he decided he had time to rest for a while under the shade of the tree before he finished the race. But Hare fell into a deep sleep under the tree and didn’t notice as tortoise plodded on by into the meadow towards the finish line.
When Hare woke up, he looked up to see that Tortoise was close to the finish line, and though he was fast, he was not fast enough to beat Tortoise. Tortoise won the race.
Now, this story was said to have originally been told by a great Greek storyteller called Aesop as a fable around 600 BC – a short story with a moral life lesson attached – Pride goes before a fall.

While they were originally playing around with the letters NV for Next Version or NVision, they settled on the word nvidia from the Latin word invidia "in" meaning upon or against and "vidia" to see or to look. Invidia is the Latin word that has become the word envy - to look with ill-will.

Friendship. Helen Keller wrote that walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light. The power of friendship can be seen in how friends provide unconditional support and acceptance. Poet Maya Angelou encourages friends “to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud”. Friends are the family you choose. True friendships offer a comfortable silence, understanding, and the freedom to be oneself. Friendship improves happiness and abates misery, by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief.

It is a powerful emotion that plays out in many of our lives. The fear of loss. We can fear losing something or someone, and so we put in measures to protect what we have. We can become suspicious of others and their motivation.

Change. It is said that the only person who likes change is a baby in a wet nappy. The reality is that staying the same is comfortable. But the only difference between a rut and a grave is depth.
It has been said to ‘Be the change you want to see in the world. But to be the change, we first must be prepared to change.’ And today, we explore the keys to a life lived well through a life transformed.

Teamwork – A few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction. (Despair.com) But what if the church, united, could be the change for good that the world needs right now?
A message by David Toscano
There is a whole industry devoted to personal improvement – known as self-help. The self-help industry rests on the idea that individuals can become more by making small personal changes or shifts in thinking – to develop our hearts, our souls, if you like. The reason there is an industry is because this holds some truth to it. But as we will find as we look at the next section of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians today, we actually can’t become all that we are intended to be without empowerment that comes from God’s love.

'Just don't seem right somehow that all the good you did,
That people preach, not practise, what you said,
I wonder, if it all died with you, that day on the cross,
And if it just never got raised from the dead.' (Watson)
What would it take for the Maureen Watson's of the world, those who look at the church and see nothing but hypocrisy, to see the risen Christ working in and through the church today? A message by David Bone.
If you were to travel by car in the 1930s from Sydney city to North Sydney, less than 1 km away, the long way round the harbour – all the way to Parramatta and back along the northern side of the harbour it would have taken 2 hours or more. The Bridge connected the north side of the harbour in ways that car ferries and land roads just couldn’t. Bridges are all about crossing the divide. And that is what we are thinking about this morning as we come to Ephesians 2.

It can happen to the best of us. The inverse proportional nature of our denials, that the older we get, the more we deny and protest our need for glasses, hearing aids, health checks, home help or giving up driving.
And as we push the reminder notices that come in the mail to the side, we convince ourselves that all is OK.
Then a whole new world opens up when we accept that things are not as they should be, perhaps even could be.
But what if this included the way we see living a life well?

Call and response – we see it in so many areas of life. For the jazz musician, one instrument puts out the call, and another instrument in the band provides a response. Or a singer on stage sings a line and points the microphone to the crowd, who respond with the next line.
Then you have the Australian chant that is apparently an adaptation of a 1960s Cornish Oggy, Oggy Oggy. With the Australian call of Aussie and the response of Oi – which should not be a statement about our intellectual capacity or our originality.
But if God were to issue a call, how would you respond?
A message by David Toscano
There is something fascinating about paintings. While many are WYSIWYG, others demonstrate that there is more going on than immediately meets the eye of the observer. Take, for instance, Salvador Dali’s Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus) with Jesus crucified on a tesseract, with Dali’s wife Gala depicted looking on, but is also seen on one of the knees, while Dali is represented on the other.
Then there’s Rembrandt’s Christ in the Storm, and after carefully counting the number of people in the boat, you discover a 14th person looking back at you – the artist’s depiction of himself.
And without becoming conspiratorial, what if – what if there is more to this life than meets the eye? Would you be willing to look in?

According to Nell DeBevoise from Forbes, “We make 35,000 decisions every day (on average). That is a huge number of choices to make, and of course, they range from micro (which socks) to mundane (what to eat) to life-changing (take the job or not). Each has a varied level of pressure associated with it, depending on the gravity, and also the personality of the decider.” (27/10/2023)

Join us as David explores the topic of friendship in light of what the Bible teaches. In a world where friendships can be transactional and based on self-interest or superficial social media connections, we are called to consider a different perspective. Drawing from examples like Jesus and his disciples, David and Jonathan, we discover that true friendship is marked by sacrificial love, mutual care, and a willingness to challenge and stand up for one another. Through friendship, we learn about love and grow in our understanding of God's love for us and our love for others.

A question that can tackle the deeper issues of motivation, inspiration and even transformation. A message by David Toscano

Today we conclude our series in Malachi as we look forward to the coming of the One who will make all things Right. As followers of Jesus, we are called to faithfully reflect the presence of Jesus in our community. A message by Matt Jones
People are less likely to respond to someone in need when they are in a group situation, compared to when they are just with one other person or alone. People like Hetty Johnston, Rosie Batty, Eddie Marbo and Tim Costello share a heart for justice and a desire for our society to be one that cares for those around us in meaningful ways. God's heart is a heart for justice as we hear Malachi's call for us to be just people. A message by David Toscano
In our third message drawing from Malachi we explore God's call to faithfulness to him. God is abounding in steadfast love, he wants more than anything to walk with us in life. But if we are to receive God's faithfulness towards us, God calls us to live lives devoted to him. We cannot be complacent towards God and expect God to come to our rescue. This is not the life of faith. This attitude wearies God.
Inherent in the role of a pastor, is the challenge not to compromise God’s message for the sake of keeping the church congregation happy. Especially when the congregation financially contributes to the wage of the pastor. Malachi speaks to the heart of a pastor, calling pastors to stay true to God’s call.
In a world where it is so easy to compromise, easy roads and cheap fixes, there is a small voice that reached through the ages calling us back to God and to give God our best.
