Yesterday we spoke with Joel Beinin about the one year anniversary of October 7th, the mark it’s left on Israeli politics, and why so many families of Israeli victims and abductees have become outspoken ceasefire advocates. For palestinians, October 7th marks the beginning of what the international court of justice determined was plausibly a genocide: a sustained assault by Israel that’s damaged more than 60% of the buildings, displaced over 90% of the population at some point over the last year, and killed – in the official tally, which is almost certainly an undercount – more than 41,000 people. California’s first-in-the-nation task force on reparations was created in September of 2020, making it first and only state to study the institution of slavery and its harms and to devise a plan as to how to provide reparations. An initial report came out earlier this summer, and a reparations proposal is due by July 2023 for the state legislature to consider turning into law. Kimberly Hollingsworth Hornor, a Kaiser LMFT in Fresno and a member of the NUHW IBHS bargaining committee joins us on the phone on her way to the picket line. 0:41 – Sharon Sobotta has been spending time talking with Kaiser mental health care workers on the picket lines, and one of the people she came across picketing was a patient. Laura Bramble says since she can’t see her therapist or get a call back from Kaiser, she’s planning to stay on the picket lines along with the therapists until there’s resolution. 0:46 – Studies have shown increases in demand for mental health services among college students in recent years.
