Sheriff Scott Rose joined the show to discuss his career in law enforcement, his accomplishments, and his Officer Down Memorial Podcast. Sheriff Rose's father was a deputy at the sheriff's office and inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement. Before that, Sheriff Rose was a radio personality, moving around from Arizona to Nebraska to Kansas, back to Nebraska, and then to Minnesota for different radio stations. After being a part of the sheriff's posse in his hometown, Sheriff Rose worked his way up to part-time, and then eventually got elected as sheriff. He has many accomplishments of which to be proud. However, the time he was outrun in a car pursuit by a 14 year old kid was not one of those accomplishments.

Chris and Tina Rudiger joined the 9-1-WHAT? podcast to discuss their Sheep Dog Marriage podcast, which focuses on couples in the law enforcement industry and military. Chris has served in the US Navy for 26 years, and Tina has been married to him for 32 years. He was a bomb tech for 23 of the 26 years he served and thought becoming a police officer would be safer. They both discussed the difficulties and challenges of being married to a first responder. Chris retired from the Navy in 2013 and tried his hand in the civilian sector for a year, but didn't enjoy it. His wife Tina, tired of seeing him come home looking like a whipped dog, encouraged him to apply for a police academy in Florida. She even got him a plane ticket and running shoes to help him get ready for the test. Chris was able to draw parallels between his time as a bomb tech and his current job as a police officer, as they both involve serving others and the structure and camaraderie that comes with being in uniform.

Clive has a very exciting story to tell. He worked his way up to fire chief in Lake Tahoe. He tells his story of evacuating the town during the Caldor Fire in 2021. Being a firefighter isn't always as glamorous as some make it seem. It can be a pretty "stinky" business at times.
Clive has some great stories including performing CPR to save a dog and you don't want to miss the one about the guy using a Camaro to pull down a redwood tree.
He's also developed a very cool tool that you can learn more about below. He's still helping to save lives even though he's no longer on the department.

Chief Ross Swope's law enforcement career has spanned four decades. He started as a walking beat cop and worked his way up to Deputy Chief of the DC Metro PD. After retiring there, he went on to work as a cop for the U.S. Supreme Court. This man is happy to spin a tale or two. We discuss how he dealt with police complaints and incidents of excessive force under his watch. He shares a story of a car jacking you won't believe. Chief Swope has recently released a book entitle "Ethics-Based Policing, Solving the Use of Excessive Force."

This episode is a little different from my other episodes. I sat down with Danny Collins who has an amazing story of having everything going for him, but losing, what seemed to be everything, due to addiction. After being drafted and signed by the Atlanta Braves, his life took a downward spiral. But his story doesn't end there. While Danny is very open and transparent about his drug abuse and other decisions that landed him in prison, he didn't let that define him for the rest of his life. We have a very healthy debate about prison and needed police reform. While we may not agree on everything, we agree that discussion needs to be had in a civil and productive manner. We just scratched the surface on this episode and I've asked him to appear on my new podcast, Dean's List, to go deeper with things.
Now Danny makes a living with a wonderful company has that has a unique housing solution designed to make housing more affordable again. Check out their website at www.containingluxury.com. You'll be amazed at the beautiful home designs using containers! By the way, Danny made if very clear to me in our off the air discussions that he is not a supporter of the cash bail system in the United States.

In this episode I catch up with former police officer Terry Tucker. After honoring his father's wishes to forego becoming a police office to pursue a career in business, Terry followed his heart after his father's death and became a police officer. He packed a lot into 10 years on the force. Terry shares his story of nearly shooting a 14 year old kid brandishing an AK47. He tells of the humorous arrests and close calls with death. But maybe most impressive, Terry shares his personal health struggles and how those struggles have made him a better person. Terry is now a motivational speaker and helps others be the best they can be. We shared a lot of laughs during this episode. But more importantly, you'll have a new appreciation for life after listening.

This is Michael Sugrue's second visit on the show and we had a lot to talk about. We dissected the officer involved shooting Michael was involved in and examined the effects on the mind and body when you're in such a situation. We also discussed the cumulative and lingering affects of repeated trauma, including the taking of a human life. We also discussed Michael's best selling book that was in the works when we first talked just over a year ago. It's great book for anyone, but especially those who are or who love first responders. It has such a unique perspective. It's called Relentless Courage: Winning the Battle Against Frontline Trauma. It's available on Amazon.

What a fun time I had with Stephanie Baker-Jones. She was such a delight to have on the show. This lady has so much going on right now but still took the time to share her story with me.
She retired from the military after 8 years in the U.S. Navy and 13 years as a surgical nurse in the U.S. Air Force. Now she's starting a new career as an armed security guard. Boy does she have some fun stories to share. As a surgical nurse, you know there are stories of people "falling" on adult toys and getting them stuck where they shouldn't. But there are even some stranger stories than that. She even tells a story about she and her fellow soldiers been essentially harassed because her commanding officer's husband had an STD and the entire crew knew it.
She has also written books, has a YouTube Channel and started her own podcast. The links are below.

Geo tells stories of very creative thieves that ALMOST get away with it. He shares stories of heroism and embarrassment. All in a days work for a police officer. He also shares how a hankering for a hamburger led to a huge arrest. You never know what's going to interrupt your dinner when you're on the job.

With over 50 years of service, there's not much that this 3rd generation first responder hasn't seem. Barry Furey started his firefighting career when he was just 18 years old. And some of the things he saw early on in his career quickly prepared him for the rest of his life.
Of course he has funny stories, dangerous stories and just downright heartbreaking stories. But in the end, he's just a good guy that's dedicated his life to helping others. He's also an author of two books and has contributed to numerous magazine articles. What a wonderful treat it was to share time with Barry Furey.

It's always fun when I can catch up with someone from my old police department. Today's guest is no stranger to the show. Rick Cook was part of my inspiration for starting the podcast and he was my first guest. But in this episode, he joins his son, Richard Cook, on the show. Richard is a 3rd generation cop and works the same district that I worked when I was on the force.
The pride that Rick has for his son following in his footsteps in undeniable. We talk about some surprises for Richard early on in his career and what it means to have a dad that he can lean on when he needs. Daddy Cook shares some of his most memorable SWAT team mishaps and how things might get real weird when he takes his pants off preparing for one SWAT call. Little Cook tells how his experience on the battlefield has prepared him for his job as a police officer and how in many ways, being a police officer is more challenging.
The fun we had shooting this episode is evident. Rick even tricks me into sharing some of my funny moments on the job.

In this episode we welcome Jennifer Anderson and Keith Hanks of 1st Responder Coaching, a resource to help first responders deal with the issues of PTSD. You may remember Keith Hanks from episode 21. If you haven't listened to it yet, you need to check it out. Keith is now a certified coach with 1st Responder Coaching along with founder, Jennifer Anderson.
Jennifer brings her own unique perspective to the life of a first responder because her husband was a police officer. She watched him change doing the job he loved into someone she barely recognized. Through these trials, she realized that true help for first responders was scarce. This started her on a journey to help others going through similar situations. This episode was both fun and informative. Whether you are a first responder, or someone who loves a first responder, this episode is for you!

This is such a special episode. This is the first podcast appearance for Carrie-Anne Eagen, but you would never know it. She has taken some painful personal moments in her life and used them as a catalyst to become a police officer and give a voice to those that feel voiceless. Due to her own personal tragedy, she knew how to connect and empathize with others, which made her well suited for her assignments on the force. She was tasked with what many feel are some of the toughest assignments of the job. But don't worry! We still cover those funny and embarrassing calls along the way.
Now, she's a national speaker and published author of 6 books. Links to some of those books are below. During this show, you'll learn what the proceeds from those books go toward. Oh! She gives a whole new meaning to "PIG."

We keep it real with this episode. We chat with retired Sergeant John Kelly of the Broward County Sheriff's Department. John Kelly is a thirty-year veteran of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, one of the largest sheriff’s offices in the country. John has been fortunate enough to have worked in and supervised the following units: Patrol, Investigations, K-9, Training, and for the past six years, the Motorcycle Unit. John has been involved in numerous critical incidents during his career. Early on, he was involved in a life changing fight for his life. Fresh out of the academy, John found himself in hand-to-hand combat with an armed, drug dealing, career criminal. This baptism of violence has contributed greatly in shaping John's passion and dedication to winning and realizing that we are responsible for our own survival and success.
During his career, John has been tasked with the development and implementation of numerous tactical programs and initiatives. He has had tremendous success in creating a positive and lasting shift in the mindset of those he has stood before. John has received countless awards and honors during his career. The vast majority of those incidents had a recurring theme: John placing himself in harm's way so that others may live, running towards danger, fully aware of the potential consequences.
First, John shares of his struggles with alcoholism, addiction and adultery. And that's just the "A"s. The daily stressors of being a first responder can be crippling if you allow it. Now John's giving back by helping first responders cope with the effects of PTSD as a Law Enforcement Life Coach. He has also authored a book to go along with his wellness program called Surviving Self-Inflicted Wounds - A Deputy's Life of Redemption.
Of course we tackle some of those crazing calls including the suspects that "think" they are hiding in plain sight, the call where John almost shot himself and one of his most embarrassing moment on the job.

This episode was so much fun! Right from the very beginning Chief Sutton surprised me with her reason for becoming a police officer. This was first time I've ever been given this reason, and it's probably one of the best reasons to become a police officer. We go on to discuss having to arrest people who are "too pretty for jail" and a police chase that could have ended with a suspect dying had Chief Sutton given up on trying to find him.
Chief Sutton's most embarrassing moment will have you laughing so hard your cheeks will hurt. She's had many great assignments during her career, but she's not done yet. She still has major goals she's trying to achieve and she shares those with us here. This episode touches on the human side of all of us and how we can all become better.

You gotta love a doctor that enjoys boxing. Dr. Pauli, as he's also known, shares his perspective on how using proven behavioral science to deliver better interactions between first responders and those they serve. These concepts make so much sense, one must wonder why they aren't more widely used. If you're a leader of any sort, this episode is one to check out.
Dr. Paulie also shares his childhood experiences that led him to a path of boxing, and what eventually led him to the field of psychology. There's a lot packed into this episode. It's not only entertaining, but informative also. Make sure those in leadership roles in your department check this one out. You can find more on Dr. Paulie below.

There is so much to learn about Trevor Williams. He grew up in a family that served as missionaries in some of the most dangerous places in the world. It's in those areas that a heart of service was instilled in him. His story is amazing. He tells of his time in Haiti when he arrived just before the massive earthquake in 2010. He was thrust into service and learned things way beyond his EMT training.
But he didn't stop there. He went onto to pursue his dream of becoming a firefighter. He then went on to invent a device that would help other first responders do their job quicker and better. This is an amazing episode with so much in it. I hope you enjoy it.

Part 2. Officer John Collins is self-proclaimed (by me) the most hated officer in the Chattanooga Police Department. Not really! He's a very funny and fun-loving officer that served his city over 26 years. Most of that time was served on the regulatory bureau, the beer and wrecker inspector. John helped to keep our city safe by making sure bars, stores and restaurants were in compliance with the rules for serving alcohol. It seems that he was always making someone mad in this role...either the business owner, or the customer.
In this portion, John tells some funny stories involving other officers and the pranks they play on each other. He also tells of a very scary moment in his career. We also learn what John is doing now to help his community.

This episode features another one of Chattanooga's finest, Officer Mark Haskins. Officer Haskins served Chattanooga for nearly 30 years. He started in patrol and went to the burglary and robbery division as a detective and also served on the beer board to help keep our city safe. Officer Haskins also served on the S.W.A.T. Team for 20 years, most of that time as a sniper.
Some stories in this episode include some of the pranks officers play on each other, really "dumb" criminal and an "accidental discharge" on the S.W.A.T. Team. We learn what Mark is up to now and how he's still doing his part to help keep our community safe. We also talk about the responsibility that comes with carrying a firearm and we tackle the age old question of why you can't "shoot him in the leg" or "shoot the gun out of his hand." And what function does a "blowup doll" serve on the force? Everything has a purpose!

Sergeant Glenn Topping served 25 years on the Broward County Sheriff's Department. He served as a hostage negotiator, bodyguard, organized crime detective and field supervisor. He was even featured in the inaugural season of COPS! All of this AFTER serving an MP in the Army and working security in a well known southern Florida nightclub.
Sergeant Topping is a very interesting man with lots of stories to share. We just scratched the surface. He tells his story of a family of shoplifters and funny chase that ensued. We discuss a very unique method of transporting an extremely large person.
Sergeant Topping also has a few books available. Two of them are based on his time working as security at the south Florida nightclub and a murder that took place there that affected so many lives. The list of bands that went through this club back in the day is amazing. Even Johnny Depp spent many nights performing there in the early days.

It's always fun catching up with those that you served on the force with and this was no exception. Twenty five year veteran, now Ph. D, John Carter talks of his varied experience serving on the Chattanooga Police Department. I never thought I'd be calling this dude "Doctor", but he earned it.
We discuss how times have changed and what he strives to instill in his students now that he's an educator. We also speak about the Uvalde school shooting as Dr. Carter was a school resource officer and supervisor during his time with the CPD.
We talked a little politics of the department, but most of all, we shared lots of laughs.

This is my first episode featuring a husband and wife team. How did they cope with a double dose of stress that comes with being law enforcement officers? Shawn served 25 years and Jeff served 32 years with the King County Sheriff's Department in Washington. What did they learn about themselves? What special challenges did they face? With so many LEO marriages ending in divorce, how did they survive? We have an interesting conversation about their difference experiences dealing the World Trade Organization meetings held in Seattle and the protests that erupted.
Shawn Thomas is now using her experience helping her fellow officers cope with life as a police officer to help first responders across the country with her 1st Responders Conferences. You can connect with her via the links below.

Officer John Mattingly's name has become synonymous with the name Breonna Taylor. In this episode he opens up and shares details surrounding the raid at Ms. Taylor's home that most have not heard. Officer Mattingly is very candid and drops some bombshells that should make us all think a little deeper about the raid.
We also discuss Officer Mattingly's tell all book 12 Seconds in the Dark. We hit a few of the high points, but this book is a must have if you'd like to have a fuller picture of what took place that night. You will be amazed by what the authorities didn't tell you and what lies were allowed to float in the air that certainly led to violence in the city.

What makes a man put his life on the line for others day after day...FOR FREE? That's exactly what I asked former reserve police officer AND volunteer firefighter of 25 years, now author, Joseph Fair. He tells us of his heart to serve and why he's willing to do it for free.
We learn where the safest place is for your patrol car to catch on fire. And we answer the age old question of "Who's cooler, policemen of firemen?"
Joseph Patrick Fair is a father to college age twins Jenny and Ryan; they are the center of his universe. He lives in West Michigan. After a near fatal on duty gunfight, Joseph found his inner-author. His writing is trademark courage and camaraderie with a sprinkling of small-town-ism. On any given day, Joseph can be found writing or championing a philanthropic cause. He is a man of purpose and meaning in life. A link to his latest book To Die a Hero can be found below.

I was totally caught off guard as I was about start the show and learned that my guest was the very person that Michael Sugrue mentioned in Episode 19, that caused the dismantling of an elite drug task force. Needless to say, the normal questionnaire went out the window. We talked openly and honestly about the bad decisions that led to Norm Wielsch to be convicted of felonies and serving time in prison. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. This is one you don't want to miss.
Norm Wielsch served 12 years on the Antioch PD, CA and 13 years with the California Department of Justice working various assignments, including undercover narcotics. He spent years catching bad guys and keeping drugs off the street until a major bad decision landing him on the wrong side of the prison cell bars. His story of redemption is amazing. Now he uses his skills to help others suffering from addition and PTSD in an effort to prevent them from going down the same path as he did. He also has a helpful book available for those who may be suffering. The link is below.

Most people never become a first responder in one discipline, but Jeff Carrow achieved it in several different disciplines. Told at a very young age he'd likely not live very long, he not only lived, but he achieved things he was told would never be possible. Jeff overcame tremendous odds due to a rare birth defect.
At only 5 feet and barely 100 pounds, he became a firefighter and a police officer. He was told he could never be either. Jeff's life story is amazing! And that's before some of the amazing things he's done as a first responder. Of course this episode is full of laughs, including the story of the law student nabbed for shoplifting and the young "would be" lovers that picked the wrong tube to use for lube. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed making it.

In this episode, we learn why he calls himself "petty." We explore some of his most memorable apprehensions AND we talk about the one that got away. We learn how his pettiness can work for you OR against you. He shares amazing stories of how some folks took advantage of the breaks that he gave them and went on to better themselves.
RoninGT also talks personally about his struggles with depression and how the smile on the outside doesn't always match what he's feeling inside. This episode is filled with hope and laughter. Now with over 1 million TikTok followers and over 40k Instagram followers, you'll hear things here that you may not have heard on those other platforms. Oh! Don't forget to "stay petty!"

How did a fire extinguisher teach him a valuable lesson on SWAT? What was his most embarrassing moment on the job? We cover all of this and so much more in this episode.

He tells a "flash bang gone wrong" story. Then there's the story of breaching a door to find 268 eyeballs staring back at him. And of course we have dumb criminal stories including one involving illegal aliens and a murder suspect that talked too much.

What an episode! Too much information to pack into one hour, but we got as much as we could. Today I caught up with Retired Sergeant Fred Reynolds who spent 14 years with the Compton PD before they were taken over by the LA County Sheriff's Department, where he worked another 17 years. Reynolds authored a book based on his life's experience titled "Black, White and Gray All Over." It's a must read.
We touch on stories in the book and much, much more. Reynolds is extremely open about his life and career. He succeeded in every role assigned to him including Field Training Officer, Robbery Detective, Gang Unit, Internal Affairs and Homicide Detective. During his career he received over 75 commendations. Learn which one meant the most to him. We talk about the hardest calls he had to answer. We also discuss "the one that got away."
We even talk about some time he spent guarding some of Death Row Records' biggest names including Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. This is an episode you'll want to make sure to share with your friends. In today's episode, we welcome retired firefighter and EMS worker Keith Hanks. Keith started an a volunteer, on-call firefighter. He ultimately became a full-time firefighter and EMT. He also became a training officer in both professions, earning a Fire Science Degree and worked in the Massachusetts Fire Academy.
Some of the funny calls we cover involve Keith leaving a very important part of his gear at the firehouse on his way to a call, a motor vehicle accident caused by "distracted driving" on a whole new level, and a fire call in a messy house that put a firefighter in a very "nasty" situation.
Keith is also working on his first book to help others in this field deal with the unimaginable trauma one may experience being a first responder.

Wow! We had to pack a lot into this show. This episode features Brett Titus, retired K9 SWAT officer of the Denver Police Department. This dude spent 22 years on a full time SWAT Team, which is amazing. There are only a few cities in the country with a full time SWAT team. And to spend 22 years as a SWAT officer is equally as rare.
We don't think about SWAT officers shedding tears, but Brett shares with us some emotional decisions he had to make with his last K9 partner. He also shares not one, but two of his most embarrassing moments on job. One of these stories he's never shared before.

This episode has a ton packed into it. During his career, Officer Baxter started as a dispatcher in 1992. Within 4 years he was picked up by the sheriff's office and his career took off from there.
He's worked in Criminal Intelligence, Narcotics, Secret Service Task Force, Training division and more.
We have another eerie cat story. Plus, a story I can very much relate to involving a professional wrestler.
We discuss the effects that alcohol had on his career and how he's now better for it.

In this episode we catch up with 17 year veteran of the Richland County Sheriff's Department and host of the Breakout Leadership Podcast, Adam Oxendine. Adam doesn't hold anything back. We talk about his early days as a Police Explorer and how the cop show "Super Trooper" played into his career. Then we work our way to his current assignment in the Major Crimes Division. We discuss his time as a K-9 Officer and what that life is like. Adam even shares the most embarrassing moment of his career with us. You certainly don't want to miss that. I'll give you a hint. It involves doodie. Or is it duty? Maybe it's both!

This episode has everything you've come to expect in the 91WHAT? Podcast and more.
Today we catch up with Pamela Hopkins. Pamela started her police career in 1998 with the Jacksonville PD in Arkansas and ended her career with the Sherwood PD after a total of 13 years in law enforcement. During that time she served as a School Resource Officer, a D.A.R.E. Officer, a D.A.R.E. Mentor and even became D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year.
This episode even has some "stupid officer" stories, involving self-inflicted gunshot wounds and shooting televisions. We talk about a "sexual assault" where the "victim" was more than a willing participant. And discuss the highs and lows of being a School Resource Officer. You can't save everybody, but you sure try!
After all the cop stuff, we shift gears a bit and talk about Pamela's music career and what's going on there. She shares a couple of her incredible songs with us and gives us a glimpse into the music industry.

This episode is full of laughs. Officer Marcus Easley recounts some of his funniest, and often terrifying, calls during his time on the Chattanooga Police Department. Officer Easley was trained in EOD, SWAT and served as a School Resource Officer. He has survived it all, including being shot, stabbed and much more. You'll swear some of these situations were "made up". But yep! That really happened. I hope you have as much fun listening to the show as I did recording it.

Warning! This episode included explicit language. In honor and recognition of the 20 year anniversary of the attacks on 9/11, I've reached out to some of the brave first responders that answered the call for help. In this episode we chat with Det. Vic Ferrari (retired) of the NYPD. Detective Ferrari answered the call on that dreadful day 20 years ago. He tells us what he saw and how he handled it. We also talk about some of the funny calls that Det. Ferrari has answered. He even tells us a, never before told, story of one of his most embarrassing moments. Det. Ferrari is hilarious and there’s no wonder his is now an author of several books telling stories about his career with the NYPD and more. In honor and recognition of the 20 year anniversary of the attacks on 9/11, I've reached out to some of the brave first responders that answered the call for help. In this episode we chat with Joe Fenerty of the Whitpain Township Police Department. Lt. Fenerty and his team traveled 90 miles to ground zero to anything they could to help. 20 years later he still clearly remembers odd things that stood out in the midst of destruction.

In this episode, we meet Officer Scott Medlin. Scott spent 6 years as a marine and 13 years in full-time law enforcement. He's now a part-time officer for a university. We learn how the desire to become a police officer was instilled in him at a very young age. We also learn how law enforcement nearly cost him his family. That, in part, put him on a path to author multiple books to help other officers deal with the stressors of the job.
Scott is certainly a servant at heart. He tells about his funnier calls as well as some of his proudest moments as a police officer. This episode is a great listen for 1st responders, their families and the general public. Sit back! Relax! And enjoy!

In Episode 7 we catch up with Officer Zach Cortese of Montana. Even though he has over a million followers on TikTok, he's much more than a TikTok cop. For such a young officer, he's already worn several hats within his department. We discuss it all. We talk drunk calls. Funny calls. Scary calls. We learn how Officer Cortese got into policing and what he really wanted to be before becoming a cop.
Officer Cortese also shares his take on being a police officer in today's world. We also talk about some unwanted attention he received around his Freddie Mercury mustache. You'll have to check out the video versions of the podcast at https://www.91what.com/.

This may be one of my proudest moments. I spend a little time speaking with my son shortly after he graduated from tech school in the US Air Force to become a firefighter. We talk about the lessons learned about fire protection as well as the lessons learned about life. This was a fun episode. Plus, it was just good to see my boy. I've only seen him once, in person, in the last 8 months. And who knows when I'll get to see him again. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.
