In episode 105 of Gifts of the Wyrd, I welcome back Imelda Almqvist to discuss her latest book, Portals, Patterns, and Pathways: A Handbook for Rune Magicians, Star Gazers and Myth Makers.
We talk about the Uthark system, rune axes, mythology, astrology, and the many ways this book invites you to explore the runes from an entirely different perspective.
This is not another book of rune meanings, it is an invitation to turn the rune wheel dial back a notch and take a step through a portal to a whole new adventure in working with the runes.
Portals, Patterns, and Pathways: A handbook for Rune Magicians, Star Gazers and Myth Makers is published by Collective Ink Books and is available in paperback (via Amazon) and eBook.
You can find Imelda on Facebook and Instagram, but the best place is on Substack where she posts articles on a variety of topics each week.
Listen to other interviews with Imelda: Episode 84 about Yule traditions and Episode 65 discussing her book North Sea Water in My Veins about pre-Christian spirituality of the Netherlands region.

In this episode I speak again with Rev. Máire Durkan. We talk about Frigg and the twelve goddesses who make up her “Council.” But from a different perspective and way of getting to know them.
In Frigg’s Twelvefold Flame, Máire's approach to the goddesses shows how they can be worked with to help with pressing matters today including justice, activism, and allyship. They are not (and never have been) “lesser” goddesses in the background to be occasionally referred to when it suits a purpose. They are vibrant, active, and have a message that is needed in today’s society and climate worldwide.
Although many of the Council do not have a lot of lore, mythology, or archeological remnants, they are reaching through the veil of mystery those absences create to connect with people today to write new stories, create ritual, empower, and inspire creativity and activism.
Frigg’s Twelvefold Flame is available from Llewellyn Books, local book shops, or online sellers.
Máire will be presenting at Lewellyn Con 2026 on Thursday, June 11 at 11 am CDT.
She is on social media on Facebook and Instagram and her website is: https://www.revmairedurkanauthor.com/

In this episode of Gifts of the Wyrd, I’m joined by Jane Matthews, creator of Ogham: Divining the Celtic Way published by Weiser Books.
We talk about the Celtic roots of ogham and Jane shares insights into why she created the deck. We discuss it as a divination tool, working with ogham in everyday practice, and connecting with them for meditation, guidance, and magical work.
We also talk about some similarities between ogham and runes — how both were used as writing systems, are used as tools of magic and divination, and developing a deeper spiritual connection with them.
The deck comes with a detailed book with Jane's insights to help you learn or gain a different perspective of the ogham. The book includes meanings, spreads, and insights on some specific topics such as relationships, work, and health.
Have a listen and get to know Jane and the ogham.

In this episode, I’m joined by Anna Urošević Applegate to discuss her book Slava! Slavic Paganism and Dual-Faith Folk Ways, an in-depth exploration of Slavic Pagan traditions and the dual-faith practice that weaves together folk Paganism and Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
We talk about Anna’s experience growing up in the United States as the child of immigrants, navigating the liminal space between cultures, and how those experiences shaped her spiritual path and worldview.
Slava! brings out the rich traditions of Slavic cosmology, magic, and honoring land and ancestors—wherever you may live. The book offers practical insights into working with Slavic deities, along with guidance on rituals, meditation, altar building, and seasonal practices that can be adapted to where you live and your own experiences.
Whether you have Slavic heritage or feel called by deities such as Perun or Veles, this conversation—and Anna’s work—offers a meaningful resource for deepening your practice.

In this episode, I’m joined by Robert Schreiwer, Michelle A. Jones, and Stacey Lynne Stewart to explore Heathen Traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch: An Urglaawe Primer—an interesting look at a distinct expression of Heathenry rooted in the Pennsylvania Dutch culture.
Together, we talk about Urglaawe (or-glaw-VEH), a living spiritual tradition that explores the roots of Germanic Heathen spirituality with regional folklore, language, and lived experience. We discuss its mythology, seasonal practices, and spiritual framework, as well as how other local related traditions like Hexerei and Braucherei intersect with—but remain distinct from—Urglaawe itself.
We talk about what it means to practice a land-based, culturally rooted tradition in the modern world, and how Urglaawe offers a path that is both inclusive and deeply tied to place—integrating the seasons and environment where you live with your practice.
Whether you’re new to Heathenry and exploring its different expresssions or looking to expand your understanding of regional traditions, this discussion will give you insights to a unique practice.

Wyrd-iversary: 10 Years and 100 Episodes of Gifts of the Wyrd
In this special milestone episode, I’m celebrating the 100th episode of Gifts of the Wyrd and ten years of podcasting.
From the first recording in 2016 to conversations with authors, folklorists, creators, and practitioners across the wider Pagan and Heathen communities, this episode reflects on how the show began, how it evolved from “Heathen NPR” to something closer to “Pagan NPR,” and what I’ve learned along the way.
I share favorite topics — from runes to Dark Christmas folklore — and reflect on the joy of learning the "behind the scenes" with creators.
Most of all, this episode is a thank you to the listeners, guests, publishers, and friends who have made these ten years possible.
Here’s to wherever the Wyrd leads next.

In this episode we meet with Irish author Rev. Lora O'Brien to talk about her latest book The Mórrígan, Ireland's Goddess: Sovereign Secrets from an Irish View.
We talk about her book and the Mórrígan as well as learning about the goddess from Irish resources, mythology and folktales, Irish sacred spaces, and connecting to an authentic Irish practice itself.
It's a really interesting conversation which goes beyond the goddess and Lora shares tools to create a vibrant Irish (or other) religious practice.
Lora is an author and Mórrígan devotee who has written this book with a perspective towards the Irish practice, mythology, and cultural connection. She is a modern Draoí—a practitioner and priest of indigenous Irish magic and spirituality.
She is founder of the Ogham Academy and with her partner, Jon O’Sullivan, she is the co-founder of the Irish Pagan School.

You know Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen. Santa, and Frosty, and Rudolph, and Dickens. But do you know? The Alluring Dark Spirits of old?In this episode, you can meet three of the Dark Spirits of the Christmas with my guest Tania Yager. Tania is the author of the book The Allure of the Dark Spirits (which will be available Dec. 5, 2025 on Lulu).
We talk about the process of getting the book written and about the three topics of the book: Krampus, La Befana, and the Mari Lwyd.
The book "is a whimsical, bombastic, and deeply heartfelt journey into the shadowy magic of winter folklore. Part memoir, part shamanic exploration, and part folklore celebration, Yager invites readers to walk beside her as she meets the Alpine Krampus in the snowy streets of Munich, seeks out the Italian witch La Befana, and revisits her own bittersweet ties to Wales through the ghostly Mari Lwyd."
We had a great discussion (one of the longer I've done) talking about her journey and about the spirits.
The book will be available for order on Dec. 5, 2025 (Krampusnacht) in time for the holiday season. A gift for yourself and that special friend in your life who also enjoys the spirits of winter.
This is a longer episode, so here is a bit of a show flow:
Yager is a multifaceted visual/ performance artist, writer, holistic educator, and shamanic practitioner. She has dedicated her life to the art of storytelling in all forms and strives to put the education at the forefront of her work. She is the creative director of Twisted Heart Puppetworks and founder of The Wild Hunt of Vista Krampus Run and The Dark X-mas Market of Vista. Through her works, she aims to inspire others to explore folklore, fantasy, myth and magic.

Some stories just never let go — they linger like whispers in the wind or shadows cast by campfires.
This episode, I’m joined by Jeff Belanger to talk about his newest book, Wicked Strange, (with photography by Frank Grace). Wicked Strange shares the ghostly lore and mysterious legends that are part of New England’s history — tales of haunted hotels, mysterious cemeteries, and the places where folklore and fact blur together.
Whether you love an eerie ghost story, a touch of folklore, or just want a beautifully photographed book to get lost in, Wicked Strange has it all.
Join us as we dig into why strange tales endure — and what they reveal about the people who tell them.
Jeff Belanger is an author, podcaster, storyteller, adventurer, and explorer of the unexplained.
You may remember chatting with Jeff back in episode 86 about Krampus and other Yuletide beings of Christmas time with his book The Fright Before Christmas.
You can also watch the New England Legends PBS series on PBS rebroadcasts or Amazon Prime. The New England Legends podcast is available on podcast apps and Spotify.

Varla Ventura, author of Enchanted Plants: A Treasury of Botanical Folklore & Magic, joins me this episode to talk about .... yes, plants.
Varla is the author of several books about the enchanted realms. She is a long time lover of plants and their magical connection between the physical realm and that of the beyond.
I can't write this any better, so borrowing it directly from Weiser's write up for her to interest you in her book:
"From fairy tales to your garden, Enchanted Plants is an illustrated treasure trove of the lore and magic in the kingdom of plants. Take a walk through mystical, magical, and folkloric gardens and discover the plants and flowers that have captured our hearts and minds for centuries. From the baneful bog to the garden gate, plant lover and lover of the bizarre Varla Ventura brings together forgotten lore of plants for the ultimate romp through a botanical wonderland, including excerpts from fairy tales and a lively discussion of each plant’s legendary magical and medicinal properties."
And I agree. This is a stunning book with beautiful illustrations and wonderful descriptions of plants and folklore to accompany them that Varla has carefully researched and worked with specifically for this book.
Have a listen to the episode and pick up the book to visit the enchanted gardens and find a plant for you.

Have you felt the call of the Great Queen but thought She was unapproachable, dark, or focused on war/warrior?The Call of the Morigan Oracle Deck may be able to help you decipher those messages and find your place in working with the Morrigan.
Joining me to talk about the creative process of the deck are authors Stphanie Woodfield and Karen Storminger and artist Naomi Cornock.
The Morrigan is more than the Celtic goddess of war, she inspires and impacts her followers to their power and fullness of life.
Complete with folklore, spells, rituals, and prose, the deck and guidebook are more than a tool for divination, they are a magical tool of transformation and connection to the land on which you live, the inner being, and the spirit realms.
Stephanie, Karen, and Naomi are all priestesses of the Morrigan who worked closely together with meditation and devotional work to bring this project into being.
They share their work with the Morrigan, how they came together, and how the Morrigan spoke to each of them to keep them connected throughout the process.
The deck is available from Llewellyn Publishing, local bookstores, and online sellers.

In this episode, I’m joined by Davezilla, graphic artist and author of Magical AI Grimoire, to talk about working with current technology for our sacred work. As technology rapidly advances, it opens up a lot of questions on how it can be legitimately implemented in our practice and daily lives, should we implement (or how much), and what are some of the results?
In this book, Davezilla presents ways to use AI technology for ritual work in similar ways of using other programs like search engines, social media platforms, computer assisted art and writing, etc. He explains how to craft questions to prompt results (promptcrafting) to spark your own creativity and spiritual practice for today’s tech-witches/tech-pagans.
There are spells and rituals for a variety of topics crafted for different traditions that can be readily used, adapted, or used to inspire your own promptcrafting experience.
The book is available from Red Wheel/Weiser directly, your local bookshop, or online bookseller.

Christian Brunner joins me to talk about his book Alpine Witchery. Christian has researched the accounts of hundreds of witch trials which took place in his native Austrian Alps.
The accounts record the spells men and women were accused of conducting which he has carefully categorized with their elements and ingredients.
This is not a grimoire per se, but does allow for those intersted to see how these folk traditions might be adapted and used today.
Christian shares his connection to the material as well as his process for translating these for this project.
Alpine Witchery is available at Llewellyn, from your local bookshop (ask them to order if not in stock), or online seller.
You can find Christian on Facebook, Instagram, and at his website Christianbrunner.com.

Are you a fan of Mid-Century Modern, Atomic Style design, cats, and tarot? Then this is the deck for you!
I discovered this deck last year and picked up an early copy as a Yule gift for my husband. Now Atomic Cat Tarot creator Wendy Miller has launched it on Kickstarter to be able to publish more decks and have it available in the tarot world.
Wendy joins me on this episode to talk about the deck, the process leading into it, the art, and more. It is a fun conversation with someone who loves cats, tarot, and Atomic style.
Get your Jetsons fix for your readings and fun art. What is your favorite card and cat?
The Atomic Cat Tarot is now live on Kickstarter through mid-June 2025. It's fully backed and delivery is expected in early autumn (in time for Christmas/Yule - so get a copy for a friend). You can see all the cards on the Kickstarter page.
Wendy will also be supporting a couple of cat charities with proceeds from the project.

Thump< >Thump<
Is that the sound of reindeer hooves on the rooftop? A knock at the door for a surprise appearance from Santa Clause to bring gifts?
Maaaayyybe. Or maybe it's Père Fouettard, Belsnickel, or Sinterklaas with his chimney Piets arriving to punish the naughty. Perhaps Krampus, Gryla, the Yule Cat or Yule Lads, or the Mari Lwyd to take you away or kill you for venturing out in the cold, harsh, dark winter.
Step in to the dark roots of Christmas with The Fright Before Christmas author Jeff Belanger. From shapeshifters to mountain trolls, to elves, to heavy-handed
cohorts of Saint Nicholas, the Christmas holiday has been filled with ghosts and monsters ready to dole out punishment to those who need it. The Winter Solstice is a time to be afraid.
Delve into the folklore of these beings, traditions, and how to make them a part of your holiday practice today.

Siri Vincent Plouff joins the podcast to talk about a favorite subject, runes. Their book, Queering the Runes, was just released in November 2024 and we talk about the book, dispel notions that runes are not for everyone (they are!), how they can relate from a queer perspective, and just about runes in general.
The book is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the runes with a fresh look at how they interact with people today. Or if you are used to working with runes, have a look at them with a new lens and see how they might teach something new or different.
Siri has been a practicing with for nearly 20 years and reading tarot and runes professionally for six. They host The Heathen's Journey podcast, teaches workshops, and is coauthor of Lessons from the Empress with Cassandra Snow.

As October inches towards Samhain, Rick de Yampert joins me to talk about the magic of Crows and Ravens from his book: Crows and Ravens: Mystery, Myth, and Magic of Sacred Corvids.
Rick has been working with Crows and Ravens for a number of years along his path and has dedicated a lot of study to how corvids behave and how we can commune with them to enrich and enhance our connection to nature, magic, and the Web of Wyrd.
Do you have crows or ravens appearing in your path or daily routine? Do they visit your yard or bring gifts? Do you speak with them? Does their presence in your life help you with your magical practice? Rick's book provides some ways to connect with them and build a magical connection to them.
Have a listen as we discuss some of those topics and more.
Crows and Ravens is published by Llewellyn Books and available from Llewellyn, your favorite book seller, or online.

"Welcome to the Nine Worlds, home of Gods, Valkyries, Dwarves, and more!" promises MacMillan Publishsers about the latest series by my guest; author and artist George O'Connor. George created the 12 volume series The Olympians and just released Thor in October 2024, the second book of his series The Asgardians.
The first volume of The Asgardians series, Odin, was released in March 2024.
We talk about his process for bringing the myths of these two popular pantheons as illustrated storytelling. It was a fun and interesting discussion to hear about George's interest with the Norse stories and how they have been a part of his life for so long and still inspiring ways to be told. And it's always nice to get a behind the scenes scoop on how ideas come about, the creative process, and other bits of writing and drawing a graphic novel about such interesting characters and adventures.
Both series' can be ordered through your local book store. Find out more about George's works at MacMillan Publishers.

Author Gunivortus Goos joins me to talk about the long awaited (by me especially) English translation of his book on Nehalennia. The book is avaialable in German, Dutch, and now English. The English title is: Nehalennia: Divine Lady of Prosperity, Trade and Safe Crossings. It is now available via Amazon throughout the world and in Europe on BoD Buchshop.
Nehalennia is a Dutch Goddess who was revered and honored in the area controlled by the Romans of the first - second centuries in what is now the southern west coast of the Netherlands. After that time, Nehalennia was lost to the oceans and time and evidence was literally fished up in the 17th century in the form of votive stones, revealing an acitive practice of honoring her.
Goos and I talk about Nehalennia, a bit about her origins, about the process of researching and bringing the information together for the book, and about bringing in into an English version.
The book has minor updates of new finds and information not in the German or Dutch editions. Goos has many other books available on a variety of Gods, Goddesses, and topics which you can find more about at his website Boudicca. There you can find books in German and Dutch as well as other essays. Many are available via Amazon or in Europe via BoD.
Goos has been on the podcast before to talk about his works: Mist Witches (episode 59) and Frau Holle and Germanic Magic (episode 41).
If you want to learn more of the history that we know of about this obscure Dutch Goddess who now has a devoted following, have a listen and order the book.

Life is pretty busy lately and it's made a bit of a challenge to book guests. So I took a couple books off the shelf that I've had for a while adn thought I'd have a little review/chat about them.
Loki and Sigyn: Lessons on Chaos, Laughter & Loyalty from the Norse Gods by Lea Svendsen. Llewellyn, February 2022. This captivating book takes you deep into the infamous legacy of Loki and the quiet power of Sigyn, the goddess of loyalty and compassion. As a controversial figure in Heathenry, Loki is often approached with trepidation. But this book introduces you to his true self: a trickster, but also a loving husband and creative problem-solver.
Elves, Witches, & Gods : Spinning Old heathen Magic in the Modern Day by Cat Heath, Llewellyn, 2021. Cat Heath has carefully pieced together and recreated Heathen magic techniques, and she shares the theories, skills, and tools you need to begin or deepen your own practice. This book provides explanations and hands-on techniques for galdr, seidr, fiber magic, herb craft, journeying, and going under the cloak.

Erika pulls out some tips for working with the Lenormand system from her book and the approach she took to writing it. Some very interesting information and process.
We also talk about her Lenormand deck which was released in late 2023. This is an American Lenormand created for a modern audience in which the characters are "unapologetically Black."

As the 2023 holiday season is moving into full swing, I am joined by the joyful and delightful Kristoffer Hughes, certainly a helper of Father Christmas himself. We talk about the beautiful Yuletide/Midwinter Tarot he created with the gorgeous artwork of Erin O'Leary Brown.
This delighful and festive deck is sure to reach through the divinatory veil and bring forth messages of great meaning. The deck includes images from folklore of Europe and a fully illustrated minor arcana adapting the Rider-Waite-Smith style to fit the wintery theme.
With figures like the Mari Lwyd, Saint Nicholas, Krampus, the Ghost of Christmas yet to be, Father Christmas, and more, you are sure to experience a Yuletide inspiration to remember with your readings during the season and year round.
Kristoffer explains his own experiences and inspirations that went in to crafting this tarot deck and we expand on a few of our favorite characters of the season. Join us for a truly enjoyable chat.
Follow Kristoffer on Facebook: @kristoffer.hughes and Instagram: @kristofferdruid and follow Llewllyn Books. You can get the deck from Llewellyn directly or from your favorite bookshop or seller.

“Do you like the wild beast-man Krampus? Do you like the giant Yule Cat of Iceland? The deep of midwinter invites you to settle down by the fire with a seasonal beverage and this darkly folky oracle deck.”
Then do we have an oracle deck for you! The Yultide Monsters Oracle by Madame Onca O'Leary.
Joining me on this episode is the amazing and superbly talented Madame Onca. Madame Onca is an artist, writer, and entertainer. She is co-author of the World Spirit Tarot (a RWS-style deck with a focus on inclusivity and empowerment), the Yuletide Monsters Advent Calendar, and other products associated with the world of Krampus.
For the winter season this year, Madame Onca has created the Yuletide Monsters Oracle for Yule-tide/Krampus season. It is currently a Kickstarter project (open until Oct 22, 2023) which is FULLY funded and ready to print. After Oct. 22, the deck can be ordered at Madame Onca Studios on Etsy.
Find out a lot of background about the characters, how the deck works, how the art was created, and more. An interesting discussion about a really cool deck.

Irisanya Moon joins me this episode to talk about her latest book in the Pagan Portals series from Moon Books - The Norns: Weavers of Fate and Magick.
We talk about the most well known of the Norns - Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, and talk about how we can work with them to connect with the threads of our web of Wyrd.
There isn't much material out about working with the Norns, and this book is a great starting point for a beginner and also a great resource for those who are familiar with the Norns to help invigorate or take a fresh approach to working with them.

Author Christine Ashworth joins the episode to talk about her upcoming book: Scott Cunningham, The Path Taken from Weiser Books. Cunningham's pioneering books on Wicca, herbs, magic, and other metaphysical topics opened the doors for many to step onto the path of Wicca and paganism.
His books are still in print and are a beloved starting point for many who seek to enter a practical magical life. Scott passed in 1993 and not much is known about the man behind the many books. With this book, Christine, his younger sister, pulls back the curtain a bit to show the loving family of the man behind the books that are still influenctial 30 years after his death.
Order the book now from your local bookstore or online seller. The book is due in early September, 2023.

Bela Siol is back with another beautiful deck to share honoring the witches of Triora, Italy, with her new oracel deck - The Witches of Triora.
The witches of this area are akin to the Seeresses of the Germanic north and others who practiced the craft. Bela has created other beautiful decks including the Oracle of Nehalennia, the Oracle of Freya, and the Transformational Oracle of the Morrighan.
Bela talks about her passion for creating this deck as an honor and love project to the women who were accused of, tortured, and murdered as witches during inquisition.
She also goes into her visits to Triora and how those visits inspired the creation of the deck and the ancestors who whispered to her and others.
Support Bela and back the deck at https://bit.ly/3e0UMEk until October 31, 2022.
Check out Bela's other offerings at www.belasiol.com and the episodes she has joined me to talk about them. They make for great Halloween and Christmas gifts.

After a hiatus, the podcast is back and with me this episode is author Gunivortus Goos to talk about his book The Secrets of the Mist Witches (Witte Wieven).
The book presents the underlying customs and folk knowledge, including many folk tales from past centuries, about the fog creatures mainly from the German-Dutch border area. In the book the dialect term "Witte Wieven" in this (or similar spellings) is often used for these supernatural mist women, who often have their dwellings in small hills or waters. They are also known in German as "Nebelhexen."
We talk a little about these mist-erious beings, but leave the mist-ery for you to find in the book (and stories) itself. You can order the book in German or English from Goos' website, Boudicca's Bard. And while you are there, check out his other books (German, Dutch, and English). Goos and I talked about his books Goddess Holle and Germanic Magic in episode 41.

The question of the soul is one that is ages-old and asked in many if not all spiritual traditions. What is the breakdown of the soul? 3, 9, 1 parts? the experiences vary widely around the world.
Joining me to discuss some Norse/Germanic views is Winifred Hodge Rose. Winfred has been exploring Heathen topics including Soul Lore for more than 20 years. She has just released her book titled Heathen Soul Lore: Ancient and Modern Germanic Pagan Concepts of the Souls. The book brings together the concepts and work she has been publishing on her website Heathen Soul Lore.
This is volume 1 of 2 which explores soul lore, theory, and history. Volume 2 will focus on applying soul lore to personal development and daily life.
The book is available on Lulu Printing and Amazon. Lulu print edition. Lulu Ebook edition.

“In the Vikingverse, the Norse rule the stars with restless fleets and an iron will. But when the thralls rebel, turning to the artifice of Norns to help them escape their bondage, the Natural order is thrown into chaos.
The Jötunn War has been fought across the Nine Homeworlds to contain the threat, a battle against the stuff of ancient nightmares, red in tooth and claw. Jötunheim is the rebellion’s last redoubt, an indignity the Empire plans to cleanse with flame and fury.
The Jötunn War. Go Big or Go Home in a body bag.”
Ian and I talk about reading the Norse tales, the 'verse, the story, the art, and more. The book is published through Outland Entertainment.
Update: Kickstarter funded. See Outland Entertainment website to order copies.

For many, there is a hesitancy, resistance, or disconnect with how to work with the spirits (vaettir) of urban/city settings. How do you get to know these entities with glass, concrete, asphalt, and steel? Just as with the spirits in forest and rural settings, they exist and we can develop relationships with them.
Joining me to talk about urban paganism and city spirits is Paul Mecurio, a New York City based gothi of the North River Kindred. Paul shares interesting ways to look at working with these beings and ways to connect with them.

‘Viking’ and ‘Muslim’ are two words that are rarely, if ever, positively associated in the public discourse. However, the upcoming anthology Althingi: The Crescent and the Northern Star explores the fascinating connections between Vikings and Muslims at the height of the Viking Age (~920 A.D.). Joining me this episode to discuss this project are Muhammad Ahmed (A Mosque Among the Stars, Islamicate) and Joshua Gillingham (The Gatewatch, Old Norse for Modern Times).
The book features thirteen authors of both Viking and Islamic historical fiction. This groundbreaking collection of cross-cultural stories is being backed on Kickstarter through May 25, 2021.
If you love stories that challenge and inspire, then join me in backing this project!
UPDATE June 1, 2021: Althingi fully funded please see Outland Entertainment to purchase. #Althingi

AWOOOOOOOOOO!!! It's WOLFENOOT season! Joining me on this episode is the delightful Wolfmum Jax Goss to talk about the new holiday, Wolfenoot.
Wolfenoot was created by in 2018 by 7-year old Wolfkid who thought it would be great to have a holiday dedicated to being nice to animals and pets. So, he invented one and it has taken off around the world. This is the third anniversary of Wolfenoot which will occur this year (and every year) on 23 November.
Join me to chat with Wolfmum about how the event came into being, what do do on Wolfenoot, being nice to animals, supporting charities and rescue centers when you can (either monetarily or by volunteering), and sharing small gifts with loved ones and pets.
Although Wolfenoot is named for the Great Wolf Howly, it is not just for wolves and dogs. Find out more by joining our conversation and join the Wolfenati! #wolfenoot #nohateonlysnootboops

Listen in to a discussion with author Gunivortus Goos about his latest works to be translated into English (Germanic Magic) and updated (Goddess Holle). Both books are lengthy volumes filled with fantastic history and ways to connect to a Germanic based practice of Heathenry/Asastru.
Germanic magic is a modern system developed from Germanic folk practices and relationships with the Elder Futhark runes for an intensive magical experience today.
Goddess Holle is revised and expanded to include lore, folk tales from the region, and how she is connecting to people today.
Gunivortus' website (boudicca.de) includes all his books which are printed in Dutch, English, and German as well as articles, blog posts, and short audio files of stories and legends.

In April 2020, much of the world is practicing social distancing, staying at home (except for necessary errands/work), and finding alternative ways to hold ritual, socialize, and share experiences due to the worldwide pandemic.
Enter online video conferencing.
Video conferencing has increased in workplaces and as a venue for teaching and learning more than ever. Among these cyber experiences is the growing use video conferencing for conducting rituals.
This is not new as online rituals have been around for a while, but with the need to remain at home, more are evaluating their views on the practice.
Jan and guest Robb Lewis talk about the benefits of facilitating and participating in online rituals. We bring up that some people are decidedly opposed to them, but focus on the good things that come from the experiences. Such as a better ability for participation:
Online rituals are not superior to in-person events, but they certainly make it possible for greater participation.
Robb is a practicing pagan of over 20 years and is the president of a newly founded Ring of *Ghosti-, a religion of hospitality. You can find out more about him at his Facebook page, his website, the Ring of Ghosti Facebook.

Welcome to Gifts of the Wyrd, a podcast for and about inclusive Heathenry / Norse Germanic pagan paths.
In this episode, I celebrate the fourth anniversary of the podcast. It's been four years of speaking with interesting people doing interesting things to manifest and hold inclusive paths of the Norse/Germanic traditions. A big thanks to you all for listening and supporting the people and works that are being done.
I also bid farewell to PantheaCon. After 26 years, PantheaCon retires with sad farwells and joyful memories. A new organization is currently planning for a convention to be held in the same location and same time frame beginning next year.
I close out the episode with the full recording of Thunderbarrows Hill by Damh the Bard. He creates some wonderful music (Check out Spirit of Albion among others) and I'm thankful he gave permission to play this song for you.
I'm happy to be asked to contribute articles about runes to a few publications including Taufr ezine (@heidhrcraft #taufrzine) and The Cartomancer (@thecartomancermagazine #thecartomancermagazine).
March 19, 2020: Today, the world is dealing with a pandemic called Coronavirus (COVID-19). Many are isolating and in quarantine status to help flatten the curve of infection rates and allow the virus to subside and not overwhelm medical treatment. Along with others, I wish good health to you all. Please be safe, follow CDC/WHO guidelines, and treat others with kindness.

Welcome to Gifts of the Wyrd, a podcast for and about inclusive Heathenry.
This episode, my guests are Bat Collazo and Luke Babb to talk about - Loki and his family. Loki is a being of the Heathen/Norse practices who is often regarded as the trickster god not to be trusted, blamed for the end of of the world (Ragnarok), and should certainly not be honored or a part of any practice today.
In this episode, we will not discuss the various myths and lore (you can look those up yourself in the Prose and Poetic Eddas or other Norse mythology collections) nor will we discuss whether one should or should not honor or worship Loki or any of his kin.
We talk about our experiences and observations of others with them in the community.
Bat is a queer Heathen of color, writer, crafter, and artist who is also heading up the Troth's upcoming Loki devotional (fall 2020) from Lulu.com. Follow Bat on Instagram at @batcollazo and on her blog, Batbruja.
Luke is an eclectic polytheist and member of the Troth. They are also a member of the Fellowship of the Phoenix (a pagan order focused on queer experiences) and a columnist for The Wild Hut.

Jan speaks with Jeremy Baer about his new Thor devotional book entitled Hammer, Oak and Lightening: A Thor Devotional. It is published by The Troth and is part of a series of devotional books to the Gods and Goddesses of Germanic Spirituality.
The book was released in early August 2019 and contains references to the stories of Thor, how he has been honored through different periods of time and people, and modern experiences, poems, and rituals to share and compare how he is connecting to people now.

To discuss our attendance at Trothmoot 2019, I am join by The Wild Hunt columnist Luke Babb. Luke is an eclectic polytheist and a magical Jack of All Trades. They are the Herald of the Chicago Temple of the Fellowship of the Phoenix, where they help to design and offer education to the queer pagan community. They are also a proud member of The Troth. Check out Luke’s blog post about Trothmoot on the Wild Hunt.
Trothmoot is an annual event held by The Troth which hosts rituals, workshops, and its annual membership meeting. This year had a special meaning for many because it hosted a ritual devoted to Loki on it's main program, something that had not been allowed for 10 years. The prohibition was removed earlier this year. We talk about the ritual and how it meant to each of us with our own relationships with Loki and the community he connects with.

The Transformational Oracle of the Morrighan deck by Bela Siol
This episode we are going to take a short visit to our Celtic neighbors to visit with oracle deck creator Bela Siol. Bela created the Nehalennia deck (see episode 22) and, as she is also working on a Freya oracle deck, I thought it would be nice to discuss with her about the deck she is creating for The Morrighan.
The Morrighan is a Goddess of the Celtic Pantheon and has close relations to Freya. I know many Heathens who work with The Morrighan, either regularly or occasionally. So She is very much connected to many people.
Update (4 Dec2019): Order The Transformational Oracle of the Morrighan from Bela's website: Bela Siol

Welcome to another episode of Gifts of the Wyrd. This episode, we pipe aboard two Heathens serving in the US Navy who are taking steps to lead Heathen services (blots/study groups etc) aboard their commands.
Josh and Josh are Troth members who serve aboard two separate commands and talk about their journeys to having Heathen (and Pagan) services and study groups regularly held while they are at sea. They joined me for an interview at the end of September 2018
The Heathen activities aboard a US Navy ship were recognized nationwide in early January 2019 with media outlets picking up a story about the services held during deployment. Our guest, Josh W, was interviewed in the story which was carried in the Navy Times, Washington Times, Daily Mail, and other outlets.
Great job!

Jan goes solo in this episode to share the growing world-wide tradition of Väntljusstaken/Sunwait Candle lighting. This is a revitalizing of the advent wreath candles with a Heathen/Pagan purpose to help bring in the Yule time.
The Sunwait candleholder has six candles to be lit the six Thursdays (or fridays/other day of the week, or even the 5 days prior to Yule) leading up to the winter solstice. Any six-armed candleholder will do, and you decorate it as you wish. Many use the first runes of the Futhark to mark the candles and manifest their runic power for the meditation and into the coming season/year.
There is a poem to go with the lighting of each candle here in English, but also on the website in Swedish, French, German and Dutch.
Post photos of your candles and your experiences setting the intentions during this on Gifts of the Wyrd Facebook group and @Vantljusstaken Facebook page. Follow on Instagram @sunwait_candles and use #Väntljusstaken #sunwaitcandles.

Jan interviews author Connla Freyjason about his book Norse Witch: Claiming the Heidhrinn Heart. This book is on the wave of a movement of encouraging those of the Heathen practices to embrace their relationships with the 9 Worlds in a modern context.
If you are tired of hearing "you're doing it wrong" by others, this is a book that will inspire you to build on the things we can piece together from the lore and archeological finds to develop thriving relationships with the Gods, the vaettir, and the ancestors. Through active participation, we use the gnosis (experience and knowledge) we gain through those relationships to create and engage in meaningful practices today.
We touch on other topics and discuss the upcoming release of Blessings of Fire and Ice, a devotional companion in the Norse Witch series. Norse Witch is available on Amazon. #NorseWitch #BlessingsofFireandIce

Was a Germanic goddess Eostre or Ostara ever honored in the old days? Are Easter and the German 'Ostern' named after her? Does the widespread Easter lore have roots in ancient pagan rituals? The answers to these questions are disputed among both laymen and scholars. Often it can be hard to distinguish between faith and facts. Therefore, the available sources have been brought together in this book and offered with explanatory notes. However, it is left to the reader to consider whether in Germany a goddess Ostara, Eostar or Ostera was worshiped as was Eostre in England.
In this episode, Jan discusses the book by GardenStone for Ostara.
Eostre Ostara Eostar by GardenStone is available from GardenStone's website and on Amazon.

Jan Tjeerd celebrates the second anniversary of Gifts of the Wyrd with a follow up to PantheaCon 2018 and shares highlights from the sacred sites tour in Germany after Frith Forge in October 2017.
After Frith Forge, Jan and seven others embarked on a week long journey through the center of Germany to visit special locations. These sites included: Ringheiligtum Pommelte, Opfermoor Bogtei-Oberdorla, the geographic center of modern Germany (Niederdorla), Frau Holle Teich, Externsteine, Kalkriese, neolithic tombs from Wildeshausen Geest, Visbeker Braut, Kleinekneter Steine and Pestruper Graberfeld, and finally visting the Mythenpfad in Schleswig where the viking age settlement of Haithabue was located.
Frau Holle Teich, Germany
Listen to the background during the Frau Holle section and you will hear a brook that Jan recorded feeding water into Her pond.
Take a look at this wonderful video edited by fellow Sacred Sites traveler, Noel. It has images of all of the sites we visited together.
Thank you for two great years and looking forward to many more episodes.

And we're back. After a 6 month hiatus, I'm pleased to be recording the podcast again. It's been a hectic spring and beginning of summer with computer issues, travel, and family things to work out. So it has delayed the timing and ability to record. But things have settled glad to ge the podcast going.
A huge note of thanks to Xander Folmer of Hughinn's Heathen Hof for the amazing logo and banners created for Gifts of the Wyrd. They are amazing and beautiful. I am really pleased with the image and working with him is amazing. Contact Xan for graphic design ideas and work you may need.
This episode we get caught up and comment about issues within the Heathen community regarding some groups choosing to make their Heathenry exclusive to those who do not fit their vision of a white, heterosexual, of certain European heritage, or other ways to exclude on immutable traits. Gifts of the Wyrd does not engage in that and stands by an inclusive Heathen practice with many other amazing groups and people. Together we can create safe spaces for people to learn, grow, worship, fellowship, and find community and allies.
Review of the Viking Oracle: The Viking Oracle is by Stacey Demarco with artwork by Jimmy Manton and published by Blue Angel Publishing.
After a little catch up session, I review the Viking Oracle. This will be a long episode, so it's ok to take some breaks at the natural stopping poings. About 25 minutes in or so will start the review. The next stopping point will be at about 43 minutes in with a music piece. Then finish out the remaining 40 minutes or so with discussion about the oracle deck. The deck review will be in three parts.
Introduction to the deck and artwork overall, the runes of the deck and the oracle part of the deck.
I hope you find this helpful with your decision about this deck.

Welcome to episode 9 of Gifts of the Wyrd. Thank you for your patience for this episode. Jan talks about Yule. Old traditions and new. Adapting traditions to modern practice or making new Yule traditions that are right for you and your family today.
A traditional song to sing around an apple or adapt to another fruit or nut bearing tree. (I have changed only a couple words of the text to honor the Gods and to make it inclusive to all who will sing.).
Old Apple tree, we'll wassail thee
And hoping thou wilt bear.
The Gods do know where we may go
To be merry another year.
To blow well and to bear well,
And so merry let us be:
Let every one drink up their cup
And health to the old apple tree.
(shouted)Old apple tree we wassail thee and hope that thou wilt bear. Apples now! Hats full! Caps Full! Three bushel bags full! And a little heap under the stair. Three Cheers for the old apple tree - Hip hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!

Welcome to episode 8. Thank you for joining us. This episode Laine and I talk about Heathenry in general. We touch on 3 short topics that we think are important to Heathen practice.
1) Inclusive vs exclusive Heathenry. Recently a prominent Asatru organization specified the qualifications for their membership – white, straight, and “family” oriented. We discuss the importance of inclusivity and welcoming people of all races, orientation, gender identity, abilities, and cultural backgrounds to worship and work with the Gods.
2) Localizing your Heathenry. Develop practices and traditions based on where you are and the natural cycle of events that happen around you. This may mean doing things at slightly different times than other regions do as well as honoring the natural events that occur.
3) Writing prayer devotionals and poetry/praise to the Gods and Goddesses. Ever seen that really neat poem or prayer as part of a ritual in a book. Or as part of a ‘book of prayer’? We encourage you to make your own. Start with just a few lines and add more if you like. This is your gift to the Gods – sharing with others is up to you. What is key to remember, is that this is your connection to the God or Goddess you write the piece for.
Thanks for listening.
