Shweta’s Basket is an engrossing short stories and poems podcast, hosted weekly, by noted storyteller Shweta Singh, where she brings the characters alive with her animated narration. It features works by some of the best contemporary writers, both in English and Hindi. The idea is to whisk the listeners away on a memorable journey of love, heartbreak, laughter, adventure and so much more.
The first poem is titled ‘This Means War’ and I can relate to it wholeheartedly. It happens to me all the time. I have suffered enough at their hands. Who am I talking about? A mosquito. So, to all those out there who have suffered their bites, this one is for you. This poem covers all the action and emotions involved with our interactions with mosquitoes and that’s what I love about this poem.
The second poem is 'Stalked', and listen to it to find out who is stalking who. And no, its not the usual suspects...

Two beautiful poems from the book #LeavesofAutumn and Other Poems. Poems with two completely different messages but both relevant in this modern age of social media closeness and yet personal isolation. The first poem 'Stop Suffering and Start Living' is full of wise counsel, captured in 12 lines for all those who are feeling down or are struggling in life. It represents the essence of life. There will be hardships - always, even seemingly happy people have them…But they find their patch of sunshine and choose to be cheerful. The second poem 'One Last Time', is a visual and high-impact poem about losing the will to live in this cruel world that has no time for troubled souls. There is something very haunting about the poem. I kept visualizing this cold-dark night and this girl neck deep in opaque inky water, her breath fogging, till finally, her head goes under.

Today I have 2 very special poems for you. What Are Days Like? and Joy on The Wings of Hope. Both poems are part of a poetry book titled Islands in The Stream written by the very talented Sonal Singh, published by Authors Press, and available on Amazon.
In What Are Days Like? she compares the days to mischievous children who are bargaining with the Sun for some more playtime. It starts with all this action; the bargaining by the days, then sulking and resisting, and then it segues into the days drifting off to slumberland. The personification is just so beautifully and thoughtfully done.
And in Joy on The Wings of Hope, she talks about life holding a deeper meaning when joy floats heavenward on the wings of dream and on the wings of hope.

So, today is very special. This is the 50th episode of Shweta’s Basket, a half-century. When I started Shweta’s Basket, a short stories and poems podcast in March 2020, I had no idea where this would lead. The only thought was to narrate stories written by you and me…The regular people, who had no platform to showcase our work and also to gift the listener a smile just like audio stories do for me.
But this was completely new and I was not sure if I could do it, or what it entailed. But I knew for sure that if I thought too much about it, I would chicken out. My family and friends agreed, so with their best wishes in one hand and armed with the required research, enough to get me started in the other hand, I took the plunge. It was like reading about how to swim and then jumping into the deep end and hoping …fervently… that your theory will help you keep afloat in the practical. But we all know how that goes. So, it was no wonder that I was barely managing to stay afloat. For the 1st nine months, there was only 1 episode per month. Which is akin to drowning.
But then Dec 2020 onwards, I found that my skill had improved a bit and now was the time to put in the hours to build the stamina. So dec onwards I started posting twice a week. Recording, editing the recording, learning the finer points of the editing software, searching for the right music, the perfect picture, uploading it to my host site Anchor and finally posting on social media. That was a lot of work, a lot of learning, a lot of frustration but utterly exhilarating.
This episode will be incomplete without mentioning these 3 people.
The very first person is someone whose name is lost forever in the lanes of bygone childhood memories. The person who introduced me to audio stories. I don’t remember who you are what your name is but I am eternally grateful to you for giving me this precious gift.
The other 2 people are #NehaParashar and #NeeleshMisra.
Neha has a podcast titled #PannoKeJharokhe. It’s my absolute favorite. Do listen to her. She has a wonderful way of pulling you in. She was the motivation behind me posting 2 episodes per week and pushing my boundaries.
Last but not least is #NeeleshMisra…Everyone knows him. He is perhaps the most loved and famous audio storyteller in India today. His #Yaadonkaidiotbox with Neelesh Misra, available as a podcast is my absolute goto podcast.
Both of them have double handedly saved me from going insane in this lockdown. Their narration is the boat that keeps me safe and afloat in this chaotic ocean of life in the pandemic. And if I can be even one person’s boat for a day, I would consider myself blessed.

There are two beautiful poems in this episode for you. Both are total opposites but are heartfelt and a result of what the poet with her sensitive soul has seen, felt and experienced. 'The Hungry Flames' was written in the midst of the Second Wave of the pandemic when all around there was misery and devastation. "The Support System' is all about feeling strong and powerful because of the right support system and both poems are such a mirror reflection of today's life. This pandemic has made us feel alone, but it has also made us realize the value of our connections. It is our support system that has given us the strength to deal with the mental vagaries of this pandemic and that is what we will draw our strength from.

The poem that I have today is of a woman who is captive, when I was writing this poem at that time in my mind this woman was literally captive, but after finished the poem and reread it, I realised it is as true for a woman who is figuratively captive too, societal norms, inhibitions, others’ expectations of her.
