St Peter's Bury
Simon concludes our series, The Word on the Street, by reminding us of its key themes and prophetic invitation to make these things a living, not just geographic, reality.
He draws the series together, focussing on Goshen, the place of Joseph's reconciliation with his family, abundant blessing from God, and protection amidst the plagues. He stirs us to pray and act that these things be true in Goshen today — join us!
Jason, one of our Curates, draws inspiration from the river Roch which runs near St Peter's, speaking about one of its possible meanings, rest.
From Hebrews 4, he encourages us to view work and rest rightly, and to remember the freedom that God brings to his people. We can live from the starting point of his victory and provision - what a gift!

Simon, our Vicar, talks about the ways in which the Bible uses the term 'Zion' and encourages us to pray that it would a present reality in Bury, not just the name of a nearby road!
Zion is about the worship of almighty God, and our making a home in him now and for ever. We pray that this would be true in you, and would love for you to pray that it would be more the case in Bury.
Abby - our new Curate - speaks about mission, spreading the good news about, and the kingdom of, Jesus. She links it to three local place names with similar resonances, Seedfield, Fishpool, and Whitefield, and encourages us to play our part.
We're sure that Abby's stories, faith, and words here will inspire you. If they do, please think of a friend who might be blessed too, and forward it on to them!
Simon speaks from Genesis 31, where the concept of Mizpah is introduced during the story of the separating of Jacob and Laban. He shows how God is the one who sees all, and that should give us comfort and challenge.
He reminds us of the ongoing bonds between those who are in Christ, and how God calls us to be watchful for the signs of his kingdom here and now.

Adrian draws on the Springs estate and area in Bury, linking it to the metaphor of springs of living water evident throughout Scripture.
Drawing on revival history in Bury, he stirs us to believe for this spring to flow here again, as many turn to Jesus.

Drawing on the tithebarn streets in Bury and Radcliffe, Jason teaches from Malachi chapter 3 and elsewhere in Scripture about the tithe, and what a tithebarn would have been used for.
He helps to respond to questions about whether the tithe still applies to Christians today, where it should go, and how it should be viewed. In it we see an image of a God who provides, can satisfy all longing, and surpass our greatest joy.

Simon introduces a new teaching series, looking at the Biblical references written into the geography of Bury, and what they show us about God's heart and activity here.
The series begins by looking at the name 'Bury' itself, meaning stronghold, fortress, or castle. Journeying through the Bible, we see how God is this for his people, and tears down strongholds that oppose Him. Through Jesus, we can run into God and be saved and protected in Him!

Simon speaks from Mark 6 verses 14-29, the events surrounding the death of John the Baptiser. He says that we are not to be swayed by others, to use our words well, and to be inspired to take up our cross and follow Christ, wherever that leads and whatever the consequence.

He traces this back through all the Bible, on into church history, and up to the present time. He urges us not to fall into common traps when dealing with the miraculous, and to see how God wants us to work with him to see these things come about, for God's glory.
Simon reminds us, to close, how these dimensions of mission are intended to work together, to build a rich picture of God's goodness and give a full understanding of his nature.

Jason speaks about following what the Holy Spirit is doing, even when that's unexpected or unpredicted. From our passage he shows us two groups who didn't see what the Holy Spirit was doing, with two different motives and outcomes.
Jason goes on to talk about the 'unforgiveable sin' and 'coming back to repentance' from Hebrews 6, showing that it is something impossible for a sincere believer in Jesus. We hope that this, in particular, brings you relief and encouragement, as you seek to follow Jesus with all yoru heart.
Simon, our Vicar, takes us through Mark 3 verses 13-19, showing how Jesus calls the disciples to be with him, appoints them to do what he did, and sends them to show that to others. He says that's the pattern Jesus still uses with us today, and that without any one of those three dimensions, we would have a deficient understanding of God and his mission.

Mike Chesterton talks from all over the Bible about God's mission for his people, and the place within that for blessing the most vulnerable.
He particularly calls us to think about the 38,000 children and young people who will enter the care system in the UK this year, and whether we could show them that we care by praying, considering opening our homes to them in fostering, adoption, and supported lodgings, and giving.

He draws this from Mark 3 verses 7-12, where Jesus withdraws to be alone with his Father, but then is sought out by people who need healing, and heralded by impure spirits who recognise who He really is.

Jason speaks from Mark chapter 3 verses 1-6, about Jesus being challenged about what was right to do on the sabbath. Here we see the stubbornness of the people's hearts, and another sign of the salvation which Jesus comes to gift people, if they will only humbly receive.

Simon takes us through Isaiah 58, highlighting humanity's deep cry for justice, far surpassed by God's heart for things to be right by His design.
He calls us to truly fast, not as an outward show but from a transformed heart. He urges us to pray, to move towards the pain, and then to act, knowing all the while that God is with us, empowering every step towards His justice.

Adrian speaks about the inheritance we receive, now and in the future, as a child of God. As an heir, we have full access to everything that is God's, and all His blessings. This is 'now and not yet' in the sense that we have the deposit of the Holy Spirit now, enabling us to live for Jesus and withstand trial, and we look forward to what is to come, when we receive our full inheritance when Christ returns.
Simon introduces our new teaching series on the theology of God's adoption of us to become sons and daughters, and the difference this makes as we follow him.
Drawing from Ephesians 1, he shows how this is out of God's pure love not coercion, that God is pleased to adopt us, and that it's all a free offer of grace for us to receive as a gift not a reward.

Our Vicar, Simon, sets a context for evil amidst the victory of Jesus, and then takes us through Mark 1 verses 21-28 where Jesus frees a man from an evil spirit. Working through some possible objections to that understanding of things today, Simon encourages us to be aware of the spiritual nature of the world, be rooted in Jesus, and confident in his victory and its implications today.

Adrian takes us through the epic account of David defeating the giant Goliath, defending the honour of God, and fearing nothing that would stand in his way.

Hannah, one of our Churchwardens, helps us to see what the kingdom of God might look like in government and public life, through focussing on God's heart for justice, and his desire for it to be outworked there.
Hannah encourages us to seek the God of justice, and then use the influence he gives us to see it enacted on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit who he gives so generously.

Rick Otto, Children's Officer at the Diocese of Manchester, speaks about the vital place of family, in all its variety, in the kingdom of God. He reminds us that we can be adopted into God's family.
Rick urges us to pass things on to those around us, to pray for, encourage, and serve within the family of faith, helping those of every generation to hear about Jesus, and grow in their relationship with Him.
Who could you pray for today? Which family could you encourage? How might you serve to see every generation declare the praise of God?
Simon continues our series on kingdom of God in every sphere of society, by applying it to the natural environment, a sphere and part of life often overlooked in such teaching.
He speaks about the concept of reverently enjoying creation, and that how we treat it indicates what we think of its creator, God. He finishes by looking at the 5 Marks of Mission, and looks throughout at a range of Scriptures.

Simon concludes our series - The Father's Prodigals - by focussing in on the Father of Luke 15, God himself. He shows us how the Father is willing to take shame from his wayward sons onto himself, and how we see this fully in Jesus, who gave his life on a cursed cross for the salvation of all who would trust in him.
Simon concludes by challenging us to look to our true elder brother, Jesus Christ, and to follow his example in being those who seek out for lost sons and daughters, to bring them home.

Hannah takes us through all the people in Nehemiah 3, reminding us of the size of the task and the importance of every person playing their part. She reminds us that we have a part to play in God's plans, and that he gifts us with the things we need in order to glorify Him and fulfil His purpose.

In Nehemiah, we have a great example of someone who found and fulfilled their purpose. He saw a problem and was inspired to find a solution. He received the provision he needed to make it happen. And he sought the Lord throughout, knowing it was He who made it happen.

Simon, our Vicar, kicks off our new series in Colossians, 'Supreme', by introducing the book and its key themes, and then taking us through the first section.
Colossians is about how Jesus is better than anything else, supreme over everything. It's also an invitation to make him supreme over our lives, dethroning anything that's not him in order to step into fullness of life when he, and he alone, is Lord.
The first section shows us Paul's primary prayer, that they (and we) would know God and his will, through Godly wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. And then that we would live in the freedom that Jesus brings to us, as he rescues us from darkness into light, from spiritual poverty into a share of his glorious inheritance.

On St Peter's day, marking the 150th anniversary of our church building being consecrated to God's glory, Simon focuses in on the life and ministry of Peter. Jesus transformed Peter's life by commissioning this fisher as a fisher of people, and Simon calls us to pick up that same mandate today.

Speaking from Revelation 4, Simon speaks about the end of the Christian story, and how that affects our here and now. The end isn't about extraction from earth, but heaven and earth becoming one — "God's people don't move out, God moves in."

Sarah speaks about the transformation the Holy Spirit longs to bring about on the inside of us, drawing from the turnaround we see in the lives of the first disciples. They were initially fearful, locked in their grief — but received the Spirit and went on to proclaim Jesus in life and death.

Simon rounds off our Relent series in Jonah, focussing on the lesser-explored chapter 4 and the sad and unusual end we find there. Jonah is happy to receive God's mercy for himself, but angry that it would be extended to certain others. Simon challenges us to swim in the ocean of God's mercy, and then invite others to enjoy it for themselves, though none of us deserve a drop of it.

Simon rounds off our series in Acts 2 by thinking about a church which was growing daily, as God added to their number. He encourages us to be people who can give a reason for the HOPE we have in Jesus, by being Honest, Overflowing, Prayerful, and Expectant.

Simon encourages us to be generous with everything we have, for the sake of God's glory and purposes in the world and at St Peter's. The early church modelled this clearly, holding things in common, providing for anyone who had need, and praying that God would miraculously provide when the need outstripped their ability to respond.
Simon, our Minister, speaks about the miraculous signs and wonders which occured amongst the early church and awed the people around them. Drawing from across the New Testament, he shows how these signs and supernatural wonders are expressions of God's power, invitations to connect with God, and ultimately a display of God's love.
Simon casts a vision for St Peter's to be a praying people, responding to the disorder of the world with an uprising of prayer, to use the words of theologian Karl Barth. He teaches us that, in line with our vision, our prayers are in and for Bury, and at the same time from and for heaven. Finally, prayer transforms us into the image of the one we pray to, God himself, and catches us up in the activity of heaven, where we'll spend all eternity.
Simon talks about the close-knit fellowship that was brought about by the Holy Spirit in the first church community. They knew each other, spent regular time together, and spurred one another on to live wholeheartedly for Jesus.
That's the kind of church community we want to be here too, a family that supports through the ups and downs, encourages us in our walk with Jesus, and has a lot of fun along the way!
Hannah Khan encourages us to be people of praise and worship, drawing that out of our central passage at the end of Acts 2 and drawing also on Psalm 19.
Hannah speaks about worship coming from the overflow of our love for someone or something, and its ability to develop our relationship with Jesus as we remember what he has already done.
Simon our Vicar focusses on the first ingredient of the irresistible early church mentioned in Acts 2 verses 42-47; that they were devoted to the teaching of the apostles.
To be devoted is to place Jesus as highest authority, to live it, and to know that it's all for your benefit because Jesus wants to bring you to fullness of life.
