Scott and Anne Marie welcome back Eric Pachman, a consultant and drug pricing analyst with 46Brooklyn. 46Brooklyn is committed to bringing transparency to your prescription transactions, and today Eric talks about spread: the gap between the amount the pharmacy receives for the drug vs. what the payer paid. It should be a simple transaction fee; but because of secretive contracts that bear no correlation to the actual price of the drug, middlemen are raking in profit at the expense of employers.
Side Affects listeners were among the first to hear about new approaches to paying for health care, including the cost/quality relationship, pricing transparency and value-based contracting. Scott McGohan and Anne Marie Singleton look at how these new conversations are changing the mindset of employers and their role in the health care transaction. And that promises to have far-reaching effects.
We all know that prescription drug prices are costing us a lot of money. One Ohio company is doing something about it. 46Brooklyn was created to obtain, analyze and release data on pharmaceutical pricing. Co-founder Eric Pachman's experience in retail pharmacy management showed him something was fundamentally flawed in prescription drug supply chain. At the same time, Antonio Ciaccia was advocating for drug price transparency for the Ohio Pharmacists Association. The two joined forces, and 46Brooklyn was born. Join Scott McGohan for a revealing conversation on how data holds the key to controlling drug costs.

Den Bishop is president of Holmes Murphy, one of our C2 associate firms. He’s also, according to Scott, “the smartest guy in health care.” OK, we know we’re setting the bar pretty high here, but Den has a keen grasp on what’s wrong with health care today and how to change it. This much is clear: Employers cannot continue to shoulder the ever-growing costs of health care. So, what’s the answer – single payer? All-payer? Medicare for all? Or none of the above?
In January 2018, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase announced they were partnering to change the way benefits are delivered to their employees. We’re still waiting for details, but Scott and Anne Marie believe this partnership of three of the world’s leading organizations might just be able to achieve its goal of simplified, high-quality transparent health care at a reasonable cost. It wouldn’t be the first time a major employer has made a dent in health care delivery; way back in 1915, Henry Ford founded a hospital for his workforce that today is a nationally recognized health system. So what changes might this bombshell announcement hold for the US health care system? If their combined technology can produce simpler, faster and more transparent health care, then Scott says there is hope.
Alex Frommeyer's strategy for dental care is hitting home and bringing the tech. Frommeyer is a founder of Beam Dental, a plan with perks. If you’re going to offer dental coverage, Frommeyer says, it makes sense to encourage dental hygiene. Scott talks with Alex about the experiences that led up to this innovative approach, and how it could change the way we think about dental insurance.
Scott welcomes Laura Putnam, author of “Workplace Wellness that Works” and founder and CEO of Motion Infusion, a San Francisco-based well-being consulting firm. Laura has taken her message of creating an oasis of well-being within the workplace to audiences nationwide, and now Side Affects listeners can learn more about the fresh approach to achieving a healthier workforce.
