Confidence doesn’t appear on your CV — but it will determine how far you go.
In this episode of Manager Matt, we explore why confidence is the armour every leader needs. From battling imposter syndrome and silencing self-doubt to stepping forward when opportunity knocks, Matt breaks down why mindset often matters more than qualifications.
You can be the most educated person in the room — degrees, experience, technical brilliance — but without confidence, you risk being overlooked. Leadership isn’t just about knowledge; it’s about presence, visibility, and belief.
Matt unpacks:
If you’ve ever questioned whether you’re “ready,” this episode is your reminder: you don’t get opportunities when you’re ready — you get them when you look ready.
Stand tall. Speak clearly. Back yourself.
Because belief in yourself isn’t ego — it’s leadership.

Top Ways a Stoic Mindset Supports Effective Management & Leadership — The Positives and the Pitfalls
In this episode, we dive deep into how a stoic mindset can transform modern leadership — helping managers stay calm, make better decisions, and inspire trust. But we also explore the lesser-known pitfalls: where stoicism, taken too far, can create barriers, reduce empathy, or slow progress.
We break down the top 10 ways stoicism influences leadership, looking at both sides of the coin:
1. Emotional Control Under Pressure
How staying calm boosts confidence and clarity — and how appearing too detached can damage connection.
2. Focusing on What You Can Control
Why directing energy toward the controllable improves results — but can also lead to passive acceptance if misapplied.
3. Consistency and Reliability
The power of predictability in fast-moving environments — and the risk of slipping into rigidity.
4. Improved Decision-Making
How stoic analysis cuts through noise — and why over-thinking can signal a lack of urgency.
5. Resilience to Setbacks
Using adversity as fuel for growth — while avoiding the trap of seeming emotionally unaffected.
6. Strong Personal Accountability
How owning your actions creates integrity — but may tip into burnout if leaders take on too much.
7. Values-Driven Leadership
Why wisdom, courage, fairness, and humility build strong cultures — and why rigid moral ideals can slow collaboration.
8. Better Conflict Management
Staying objective to de-escalate tension — without drifting into emotional neutrality that feels dismissive.
9. Reduced Stress and Burnout
Stoic acceptance helps leaders stay centred — yet can stop them from asking for help when needed.
10. Long-Term Thinking
Strategic clarity for the future — balanced against the need for quick wins that energise teams.
In Summary
A stoic mindset can be a powerful foundation for leadership — promoting calmness, clarity, resilience, and rational decision-making. But like any approach, it has a shadow side. Effective leaders blend stoicism with empathy, communication, and adaptability to build strong, human-centred teams.

Well I can bet at some point in your life We have all been in the position, where we are doing our best for people, giving out free feedback, knowledge, advice, but despite our best efforts the person asking for the advice doesn’t take a blind bit of notice.

In the STAR technique. Candidates can effectively provide evidence of how they have used their skills in practical situations. Where does optimism fit into your leadership style. Can you be over or under optimistic? And are your grounded when it come to been an optimist ?
In this weeks show I examine the idea of optimism and the way to use it in business.
It has been said, a number of times, that I am a optimistic Person by nature, which is true, I do look at the world in optimistic way. In fact I have had it thrown back in my face that I am too optimistic when it comes to manage people “ you are naive and you are seeing the good in people too much “
In my mind its a balance which you need to get right.

Should Will Smith have created a gap between his action and reaction at the Oscar ceremony?
Have a listen and let me know your thoughts.
Welcome to this weeks show.
So what is positional power and is it still the driving force of organisations?
The idea of authority derived from rank is a very well established concept of management. We would all be able to think of a direct command and control organisation, the military springs to mind, with ranks and authority driven position.
I bet Most people can recall a job where the boss was the head, he or she would make the decisions and everyone would follow without question. This idea of a position power is something that has slowly become less of a main stay way of managing.
When should you use your power and when should you be aware of over using it.
Have you ever had a time when you felt people were to quiet and not quick enough at responding. They just don’t seem to get you, they are obviously not on your wavelength.
They are so quiet when you talk, it takes an age for them to respond. I am not sure they are all there when we are in meeting.
It really got on my nerves, hours and hours if not days of deliberation.
Is the problem them? Or are you to bright, is your light dazzling them?
Have a listen and send me your thoughts.
I know it sounds simple doesn’t , control what’s in your control, is that not the basic role of an ops manager?
Yes is the short answer but it’s surprising what’s not controlled and gets out of hand.
And what the biggest area to control in ops? Costs.
Todays cast will examine are which you can control in operations to rescue the costs and add value.
Enjoy
How to formulate imperatives.
Thanks for joining me this week hope all is well? . Over the past few weeks shows I have looked at purpose of your business and the need to form purpose as a wider group. This is the idea of starting with Why. I then looked at communicating out the purpose to the wider team. Today I want to go from the whys to the how’s. You have a communicated purpose, and you have engagement. But what do you need to do to get the delivery? Remember without a deliverable the organisation will not grow or even survive.
We have all been on the end of the outsourcing fun of the work world.
IT, HR, Site services. What is it really aimed at doing? How can 1 person been replaced by 5 a good idea in business?

Listen to my thoughts on adaption in our modern world of management
Welcome to my Friday thought, a chance to talk about a subject which affects leaders and managers in the day to day working life.
So lets get on with this weeks Friday thought.
How to Adapt. I call it adaption because if you call it change it can sometime mean you become not your true self.
How Lucky are you?
When it comes to jobs in management how much luck comes into it play when selected. Are you a jammy bugger who has fallen into a role without any effort, or someone who has missed out on the idea job over and over again.
Have a listen to the idea about luck in management
Hi and welcome to the show. A couple of weeks we spoke about the idea of the why and the purpose of your team within your business.we spoke about how to fit a purpose aligned to the company’s purpose.
If you have not listened to that show please go back and give it a listen well worth it.
So This week I want to explore the idea of communicate the purpose and the general principles of communication to your team and wider audience In the company.
It Groundhog Day Well it is when I broadcasted this its podcast, it’s the 2nd of February, which in the united state is know as Ground hog day. The day of the year when a ground hog ( a large rodent) is meant to tell if winter is ending early or continuing for 6 more weeks.
This brings me around to my point, how many of us are actually living the ground hog day in real life. We get up and go to work, we have the same conversation every day, we do the same work which adds no value, we go home and eat the same meals we watch the same programs on TV and go to bed. Then repeat.
Sound familiar?
Have a listen to my thoughts of our ground hog day mind set
Why are we here? Yes it’s a big question it’s the one the humans have been asking since the Dawn of time The thought in our minds of a bigger master plan than the current one we are living. What’s our purpose, why do I exist, what is it I am here to do? I am supposed to spent 3 hours a day staring at the instagram freed or talking to myself into a microphone>?
Well today I won’t answer the big question, I am saving that for the best of episode.
90% Of people think the meetings they are in are not adding value to their days.
Have a listen to me ideas bout making your meetings better and improve your skills as a manger.
One thing that is a definite in business is there will be a need a need for meetings. They are the basis of modern life in work. If you your not in a meeting you are getting ready for a meeting or working on action from a meeting.
In a recent poll meetings where seen as the biggest waste of manager time.
From the attendees they felt they were, not action driven, were more talk shops, seen as something for people to do but added no value, over ran or started late and the biggest was the feeling that the meeting was not relevant to them.
Welcome to the Manager Matt Podcast this week I want to talk about the Idea of the blue Monday Mindset

This weeks show is looking at a branch of science involved in the way we look at our mindset, and positive psychology.
The science of positive psychology or the science of happiness, looks at the reasons we are happy instead of the reasons we are not.
It looks at how we can alter our prospective on life’s ups and down for the best.
In positive psychology there is a calculation which workout your happy to unhappy ratio.
The idea is that nobody can be 100% happy all the time, this would not be normal and would indeed be a problem in itself, as 100%happy person may have a behaviour disorder. There is always emotions that’s just a fact so we need to appreciate this.
This episode is about the art of mind mapping. I feel a mind map is a great tool to free your thoughts and express your self.
Have listen and free yours.

What a Great film from the 1980s Time bandits was, look it up, very strange and funny.
As before this is not a podcast about the Terry Gillian classic. No it’s about the time robbers in our working day.
Why do we not give away our money or a property at the drop of a hat ? but we will easily give away our time. Surely time is more precious. We only have 24 hr a day and 8 hours of they are in bed.
In the long run We only have a finite amount of time on the Earth and as humans we are very well aware that eventually it will come to an end.
But it’s funny when you’re at work ( and at home sometimes) you let people steal our time for us without a problem.
We all also say you have no time in the day to get your jobs done.
Over the last 25 years of managing people I can honestly say I have never got a single thing wrong. I planned my approach using my knowledge and strengths then I actioned my projects without failure. Ending up with the results I needed on time every time. Its got to be true because I have been successful over the years, right??
Obviously not, naturally I have tried failed and tried again. In other cases, I have spoken about being able to say you get things wrong but what does that really look like in the workplace as a manager?
This week I explore the powerful use of the words I and Sorry as a leader.

I have recently had a lot of managers talk about how they hate been micro managed, they feel it’s an insult to their professionalism. They think their boss need to back the hell off their back to let them do their jobs.

Welcome to the manger matt thoughts
A opportunity me to talk about a issues both positive and negative which affect the way we and our teams work in today’s organisations world.
Let’s get on with the show.
I have a confession, I have failed at work, I have made mistakes, projects have failed.
Am I no good at what, should I not bother getting out of bed or do I improve because I have failed
Welcome to the MM podcast show. This week I want to talk about management reactions to big changes.
How they will affect you as a leader and a person.
How you need to think about your reaction to change
And how you should plan for big changes personally.
I think we need to start with a honest true, change will happen, its not something you can avoid, at home or at work.
Can you be your true self at work ?
Where’s the line between work and Personel. Now we are more connected and our digit footprint is everywhere so is there a line anymore?
Do we as managers need to have mask of protection, which you put up around you Or are you totally honest and open openness?
Welcome to Manager Matt show,
This week I want to look at How to take feedback as a leader.
What’s the best way to get the gift of feedback and how as a boss show you react.
So you’re the boss, you are the head of a department or a team and with that you have an air of knowledge and dare I say it power. Well at least positional power. But you feel that you are approachable and ready to learn, so with all that in mind how do you response to feedback?
You say you are open to it; you make sure you give plenty of feedback to your team and directs but what’s your reaction to getting feedback like.?
Theres always pot holes in the road of life.
The titles sound very deep, like I was mulling over the meaning of life or something. I guess life’s challenges are deep in some way but less in others.
So the real challenge is excepting that life is going to have pot holes and ride around or go through you will be stronger as the journey goes on.
Welcome to the manger matt thoughts
A opportunity me to talk about a issues both positive and negative which affect the way we and our teams work in today’s organisations world.

Welcome to the manger matt thoughts
A opportunity me to talk about a issues both positive and negative which affect the way we and our teams work in today’s organisations world.
This week I want to look at scanning your horizon for threats both in and out of work. Could save you walking under a bike wheel.
The more time you work with people, the more you learn, there’s an old saying “you can’t learn to ride a bike by reading a book” and it’s the same with people management.
Understanding management theory is a good thing to have in your tool box, and you should never stop learning but also balance that with exposure to people both good and bad. You learn both ways.
the Dunning krugger affect.
Welcome to the manger matt Friday thought, every Friday I examine an issues or practices that I find unusual, funny or frustrating in the modern world of work.

There a old saying in Yorkshire ( natural there would be as Yorkshire is the great place on the planet you all know it will be great advice)
That you should use what god gave you.
2 ears and 1 month so listen twice as much as you talk.

So what does ownership really mean when it comes to work, we should all care about the business working shouldn't we? If we don’t really care why should we bother going to work, are we just there for the paycheck? Don’t get me wrong the pay gets you through the door, it gets you out of bed in the morning but what you do at work and how much you take ownership depends on more than money.

And the reasons why been present at work is a struggle that gets in the way of you and your team deliver results.
So let’s get on with the show.
Right let’s clarity been present, I don’t mean turning up on time to the meeting or getting sat at your desk till 5.30 every night. I mean been present in the moment and engaged with the work you are doing or task you are performing.
Welcome to the manger matt Friday thought, every Friday I examine an issues or practices that I find unusual, funny or frustrating in the modern world of work.
So let get on with this weeks Friday thought
Why are we complicating so many elements at work? This weeks Friday thought is about the way that Every area has the curse of complication . The obsession and ever growing need for high level data, sent up the organisation to only come back down with momentum.

Whats the best approach to make them stick.
So I bet it’s not a surprise to most that that a lot of teams are not given clear instructions and lack clarity on what they are there for.
This is not usually a tactic of a business
There’s not a e mail sent to no all saying don’t tell people what are goal
Is it’s a secret. That would not make sense would it, so what happens.?
Welcome to the manger matt Friday thought, every Friday I examine an issues or practices that I find unusual, funny or frustrating in the modern world of work.
So let get on with this weeks Friday thought
Saying all that now comes the Friday thought, for a team perspective and to get the best out of others. 100% remote working does not work and we need to get people back into the workplace as soon as we safely can.
Yes I have said it,

I get a lot of people telling me how busy they are at work. They tell me that they take work home because it’s the only time they have to get thinks done.
So why are you in so many meetings?
All business have some form of audit, be that safety, financial, customer, ethical.
As managers been in a sustainable business that delivers results will on some point relay on getting positive audit rates and scores.
Audit preparation and the audit days are hectic and stressful which means it play right into the hands of a good manager.
Today I want to go through my experiences of auditing both good and bad and look at what you can learn to improve your scores.

Well done you passed the critical interview
You nailed the first 90 day presentation after following my advice I hope.

Welcome to the manger matt Friday thought, every Friday I examine an issues or practices that I find unusual, funny or frustrating in the modern world of work.
This weeks Friday thought I would like to speak about mental health at work.
There are a number of steps you have go through.
You’re have your cv sorted out by a recruiter or hr manager.
You have your first stage make your impressions over the phone, zoom or in person.
Then you get to the real business end the Second interview and that’s were your really in the running.
In the second interview there has been a move to give a presentation of what your first 90 days will look like.
Welcome to the manger matt Friday thought, every Friday I examine an issues or practices that I find unusual, funny or frustrating in the modern world of work.
So lets get on with the weeks Friday thought.
Have you ever listen to the shipping forecast which is broadcasted every evening on the world service?
This weeks shows a bit different I want to revisit the most popular show of series 2
How to set goals got your directs.
Bit of a heads up since recording this case I have changed some settings and recording equipment so you might tell a little difference in sound, hope its not to distracting. It’s the time of the year to set goals for your directs and yourself it’s a important time which can set you for a challenge but do able year or to fail miserably.
Welcome to the manger matt Friday thought, every Friday I examine an issues or practices that I find unusual, funny or frustrating in the modern world of management.
So lets get on with the weeks Friday thought.
Today I want to have a good old fashion mown about the forward all culture we have in management.
In most companies this is the time of year for the yearly review
This weeks I will be examining how to do the review and what pit fall you should avoid.
So it the end of another great year and it’s time to assess your directs
Hopefully you have done your one to ones and surprises will be minimal
Saying that it can become a mine field of emotions
They real underlying point is a consistent approach
You will have great good and ok performances
You may have poor performances but normally you have addressed that
Hello and welcome to series 3 of the manager matt podcast show.
I again feel the first two series have been great fun to do and have revived some very positive feedback.
I intend series 3 to have the same impact.
Over the past 4 weeks I have been developing number of new angles to speak about around the art of managing and the talent in leadership.
I have also been through a very intense interviewing process and I want to help you learn how you can develop skills in interviewing.
I feel Behind presenting to an audience or maybe doing a podcast interviews are one of the hardest and nerve racking things people will need to go through in their professional life.
People come to an interview under prepared, under motivated and completely mess it up. Naturally this is not something you want to do if you want to grow. I also feel people don’t go for roles due to the fear of interviews.
So Interview is a key skill if you want to progress in your work career. Not only externals when looking to move companies but internally for promotion s.
Over the past 12 months things have changed so much.
We are spending more time away from work due to the current world we are living in are you missing your work mates?
The aim of any disciplinary procedure is to make sure that the team is kept safe, that people are treated fairly and the business is protected.
As a manager depending on your level you might deal with small low level breaches in procedures, such as time keeping or absence. The higher in the organisation you will see more serious breaches which can lead to dismissal from the business.
This cast examines the best way to prep and prepare for disciplinary process.
This weeks thought is about development and learning.
Its fair to say that people in general want to improve there knowledge, both professionally and in their home life.
so Why don’t we make time to learn?
Why do we Feel that after school, college or university learning stops in some way?
Where does our time go which means you don’t have time learn?
and how do we make time?
Welcome this week show, this episode is going to look at how you can build on improving your team members to be the best they can be at work and of course deliver the results you need.
Now you know I am going to make it clear that the big 5 of management will play their part in improving your team members. Its not a surprise that regular contact, feedback and empowering with your team will get results. But todays cast goes deeper in looking into what happens when your not seeing the results you expect from your directs and how you can help them even further to improve.
Have you ever had a direct who is alway causing a problem? Always got something to say, always ragging against the machine of leadership.
Always in conflict with his team mates or other teams?
Trouble or bored?
Ok it’s been a hard year for everyone the amount of change in our business life’s has never been quicker.
Working remotely is the norm, it’s not the new normal because that is just the normal
Do my thought this Friday is about one element of remote working which I am struggling to understand. The mute button
Today I will revisit why good one to ones can make such a difference and will deliver results.
I will discuss how to get people on board when they are reluctant.
And also how to handle the completed refuse.
So thanks for joining me again for this week’s episode of manager Matt, this week I want to revisit the one to ones. In my view the most important part of building a strong relationship with your directs.
Naturally With good relationships come a understanding of the person, their strengths and how they function inside and outside work.
Welcome to manager Matt podcast show this week’s episode strategy into action. I we be examine how to set imperative to align you and your team to the mission. How involvement and collaboration builds a stronger local strategy and a how to step by step guide to make it happen.
Yes I am sorry for the language and it not something I advocate in my managers but it’s needed to really get the point over. So the thought today is “Why do we have this obsession with the give people a shit sandwich when it feedback “?
Welcome to manager This week I will look at a very common statement.
Why is my team so lazy? and how can I improve them to deliver results?
So let’s get on with the show.
So let’s have our Friday thought,
Are you still blaming others for your ships poor performance?
Are you watching the water coming in and telling everyone it’s not your water to deal with?
Are you on the bridge of the ship of fools and your the captain jester ?
This weeks Friday thought is about the emotions in a workplace.
Great leader know how to keep a level head when all around you are losing theirs?
Do you ?
