The Center for Financial Security recently conducted a study that showed that 99% of people who experience domestic abuse also experience financial abuse from their partners. The study also found that most domestic abuse cases actually begin with a subtle form of financial control that escalates into physical, verbal, or emotional abuse. Unfortunately, financial abuse is not talked about as often as other forms of abuse, and it’s because of this lack of education that many people unwittingly miss the warning signs. This episode discusses these warning signs, and also shares how to get help if you're the victim of a financial bully.

Most Americans will have debt at some point, but this isn’t necessarily a financial failure. That’s because there is a distinction between “good debt” and “bad debt.” As a general rule, good debt facilitates a goal, such as buying a home. Bad debt, on the other hand, is debt that includes a high interest rate and doesn’t necessarily support a life goal, such as credit card debt. This week’s challenge is for those struggling with bad debt because, with discipline, it’s possible to find yourself free from bad debt and financially healthier.

This can feel unnerving for parents, but this week’s challenge is to adopt a mindset that prioritizes your own financial future.

Society encourages us to look at things in black and white but, when our finances are uncertain, this mentality can hinder our ability to see a new path forward.
The Sherpas of Nepal spend their days guiding eager, daring travelers up the treacherous paths of Mount Everest. What they witness in a month is likely more terrifying than what most of us have experienced in a lifetime. And yet, they continue guiding thousands of visitors per year. I admire these Sherpas because they embrace the uncertainty that the Himalayas hold as part of their life and their livelihood. When it comes to facing financial uncertainty in our own lives, we can take a lesson from the Sherpas.

One of the frustrating parts of financial planning is that your plan is never permanent. Unexpected financial setbacks happen to all of us, and they can be things like job loss, the death of a spouse, suffering the effects of a risky investment, a failing business or many other stressful occurrences. In these situations, it’s normal to feel anger, sadness or fear, but one thing that can help us move forward is resilience – the capacity to bounce back from difficult situations.
