Today we have a special show for fund drive co hosted by feminist Queer activists Kate Raphael and Rae Abileah, who will talk to Jewish Feminist Queer author, scholar and activist Judith Butler about two topics they have become famous for reshaping and making part of everyday discourse, that is gender and anti-zionism.
If somehow you are one of the few people who haven’t heard of American philosopher, gender studies scholar and anti zionist and Queer feminist activist Judith Butler they have written over a dozen books including their seminal book Gender Trouble which came out in 1990 and which shook up the academic and political world with her redefinition of gender. And they have been have been a major influence on political philosophy, ethics, and the fields of third-wave feminism,[2] queer theory,[3] and literary theory, and if they wasn’t enough they are also important to anti-zionist activist and Queer activists since to many in these movements they are a huge force in support of these movements. for Butler’s concept of gender as having been constructed they have been seen as a threat throughout the modern world — to national security in Russia; to civilization, according to the Vatican; to the American traditional family; to protecting children from pedophilia and grooming, according to some conservatives and by Zionist they are excoriated as a defender of Hamas terrorism and banned from Israel.
And to interview Judith Butler we are very lucky to have two experienced Queer activists, novelist, journalist, anarcha/feminist and queer activist and a long-time producer with KPFA’s Women’s Magazine Kate Raphael is co housing with social change strategist and ordained Jewish faith leader Rae Abileah and they will be leading our conversation with Judith Butler today . In the first half of the interview Kate Raphael will talk to Butler about their newest book on gender “Whose Afraid of Gender” that looks at the right wings utilization of gender to attack Queers, trans people and women. And in the second half of the show Rae will talk with Butler about her book “Parting Ways Jewishness and the Critique of Zionism” that came out in 2013 as well as her thoughts about anti-zionism today.

This Monday Lisa Dettmer we will look at the security of our election system with our guests Emily Levy and Marilyn Marks who are working to make our election system more transparent and secure. While happily the polls show support for Harris as stronger than Biden’s were and gaining on Trump in swing states there are still ways the Republicans are working hard to manipulate this election. MSNBC has recognized that the Republican’s are planning election manipulation especially in swing states and has been covering problems with concerns about potential certification delays a lot recently, but around the country election systems that are not verifiable and transparent are in jeopardy of being hacked or subverted and this is especially true in In Georgia which is an essential swing state , and where the ‘Biggest Election Breach’ in History Has Gone Uninvestigated. Recently the non profit non partisan paper NOTUS covered this breach writing
“It’s been more than three years since a team of Republican officials engaged in a covert operation to illegally access a rural Georgia county’s electronic elections system and appear to have made off with sensitive computer information — after briefing Donald Trump on aspects of that plan in the White House .Yet no one — not the feds, not state elections officials, not even local law enforcement — has ascertained exactly what happened in Coffee County, Georgia, a rural patch of the politically deep red American South.” And this is only the tip of the ice berg of election fraud possibilities in Georgia and many other states including California that don’t have a way to verify votes or have enough poll workers to make sure the system works fairly”. . So today we talk to two women who are working on voter transparency.
Emily Levy is the Executive Director of Scrutineers.org, a progressive, nonpartisan online community dedicated to fair, transparent, accessible, and secure elections. An activist for over 50 years, Emily has been a leader in the election transparency movement dating to 2004 and specializes in helping members of the public understand election technology and security issues and to become active in the movement
And Marilyn Marks is the Executive Director of Coalition for Good Governance, a non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to transparent government and evidence-based elections. Marilyn is the driving force behind the much-watched Curling v. Kemp lawsuit against Georgia’s election officials to rid the state of unverifiable, touch screen electronic equipment.

And we will talk to Aida Touma-Sliman who is a Feminist Activist, Israeli Palestinian Politician and Palestinian Citizen of Israel
Touma-Sliman is a member of the Israeli Knesset representing Hadash which is the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality), and an Arab-Jewish party.
She was first elected in 2015 and served as the first Arab chair of the Knesset statutory Committee for the Status of Women and Gender Equality till 2022.
MK Touma-Sliman was the first woman to serve in the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel and is Co-founder of the International Women Commission for Just Palestinian-Israeli Peace. She is also a secretary member of the World Peace Council. Aida was suspended from the Knesset last year for criticizing the Israeli military assault on Gaza. Despite endless attacks by the mainstream Jewish media and right wing politicians in Israel Touma-Sliman recently initiated in the Knesset a special session titled “Recognition of a Palestinian State – Why Now? In order to begin discussion of a two state solution for Palestinians for which she and her supporters were verbally attacked by right wing Knesset members. But still she keeps on fighting for peace for Palestinians.

This Monday on KPFA Radio’s Women’s Magazine, Kim Anno and Lisa Dettmer talk to queer ecology activists who are courageously fighting the climate crisis in Florida
These inspiring and creative Queer activists are represented in the new film “Cant Stop Change: Queer Climate Stories from the Florida Frontlines”, that is now available to see online at Kinema at the URL kinema.com/films/cant-stop-change-queer-climate-stories-from-the-florida-frontlines-rclks for the month of July.
“Can’t Stop Change” weaves together interviews with fourteen trans, queer, and Two-Spirit collaborators across Florida, bravely fighting for change in one of the most anti Queer states and a state that has been battered by natural and political storms: climate gentrification and displacement. These activists target the disproportionate affect natural disasters have oppressed communities based on race, class, and gender and link the environmental disasters with the political disasters of anti-abortion and ani-trans bills, permitless concealed carry laws; and white patriarchal corporate power that militarizes the police. Unlike many mainstream environmental groups these Queer ecology activists recognizes that we need deep structural change that challenges Cis Heterosexual white Capitalist patriarchy and doesn’t just treat symptoms.
In the face of all of this devastation, these queer and trans ecology activists in Florida are courageously imagining a better future and tackling the issues head-on through mutual aid, building queer communities, and standing up to corporations and bad politics. In this stirring documentary they follow these inspirational activists as they tour the state, meet with mutual aid providers to uncover the challenges of each area, and learn about the passionate work being done to combat them.
We talk to Vanessa Raditz, the Co-Director of Can’t Stop Change who is also a queer climate justice/queer ecology activist in the Southeast and Bay Area
And we talk to Florida Native, Barbara Perez , who is PhD student at Florida Atlantic University where she is doing her dissertation on climate gentrification
And lastly we talk to Rebecca Wood who is an Environmental Educator and Miami resident who is currently involved in local climate activism/community disaster preparedness

Today Women’s Magazine host Lisa Dettmer talks to guests who celebrate and remember the groundbreaking anthology, Chicana Lesbians: The Girls our Mothers Warned us About. Published in 1991, the anthology is the first critical and creative book to specifically address the complex lives and challenges of Chicana lesbians. Described by Amazon as “the most important book ever published about Chicana lesbians,” the anthology included both established and emerging Chicana lesbian voices of the time who contributed poetry, testimonios, and essays. In their work, contributors considered the experiences of Chicana lesbians in regard to prominent Chicana feminist discussions while adding their original perspectives that sought to deconstruct dominant ideas about sexuality as it overlapped with race, gender, class, and other markers of difference. Importantly, the anthology also addressed the rampant lesbo-phobia that was intricately interwoven with patriarchy, racism, and classism. Now, over 30 years later, Chicana lesbian scholars are re-examining this preeminent text in the Journal of Lesbian Studies as a special two volume issue called “Re-Engaging the Iconic Text ‘The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About.’” Today we are joined by 4 lesbiana and queer scholars to help us think about this pivotal book and the critical issues that it raised. We are joined by Liliana C. Gonzalez, Assistant Professor at Cal State University, Northridge, & Stacy I. Macias, Associate Professor at Cal State University, Long Beach, who are the co-editors of the 2-volume special issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies. We are also joined by Carla Trujillo, who is the visionary editor of the original book, Chicana Lesbians: The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About. Finally, we are joined by Ellie Hernández, Associate Professor at UC Santa Barbara, who is a contributor to both the 1991 anthology and to the current special issue re-engaging and honoring this formative text. We will look at the significance of these writings to queer and feminist of color scholarship and movements and to Chicana lesbian lives.

Today on KPFA Radio’s Women’s Magazine Lisa Dettmer and Kate Raphael talk to two Israeli spiritually informed Jewish activists and scholars about what the role and effects are of trauma are in living and growing up in the apartheid state of Israel on both their own lives, and the lives of others in Israel/Palestine and how that trauma and the exploitation of that trauma has supported the militaristic and colonialist Zionist state of Israel. And we discuss how racism and white supremacy are intrinsically part of the colonialist Zionist project in Israel from its founding and how healing from trauma is one of the important steps to peace.
We talk to Meital Yaniv who was born in Israel, and is learning how to be in a human form. they do things with words, with moving and still images, with threads, with bodies in front of bodies, with the Earth. they are a death laborer tending to a prayer for the liberation of the land of Palestine and the lands of our bodies. they keep Fires and submerge themselves in Ocean and Sea Water often. yaniv is learning to listen to the Waters, birdsongs, caretakers, and ancestors as they walk as a guest on the home and gathering place of the Cahuilla-ʔívil̃uwenetem Meytémak, Tongva-Kizh Nation, Luiseño-Payómkawichum, and Serrano-Yuhaaviatam/Maarenga’yam.yaniv is the author of bloodlines. They make offerings through true name collective.
And we talk to Hadar Cohen who is an Arab Jewish scholar, mystic and artist. She is the founder of Malchut, a spiritual skill building school teaching Jewish mysticism and direct experience of God. She cultivated her own curriculum on the cosmology of creation and teaches it through her training God Fellowship. Malchut is also home for her Jewish Mystical School that includes a library of her classes and a community platform for connection. She is a 10th-generation Jerusalemite with lineage roots also in Syria, Kurdistan, Iraq and Iran. Hadar consults and teaches on Judaism, multi-faith solidarity, spiritual and political activism and more.
Her podcast, Hadar’s Web, features community conversations on spirituality, healing, justice, and art. Hadar coaches and mentors people 1:1 as well as leads and facilitates groups and community gatherings. Women’s Magazine hosts Margo Okazawa-Rey and Jovelyn Richards talk with award-winning free lance journalist and author Thandisizwe Chimurenga about her collection of interviews in the book “Some of Us Are Brave: Interviews and Conversations With Sistas in Life and Struggle” and her second volume “Some Of Us Are Brave (Vol 2): Interviews and Conversations with Sistas in Life and Struggle” two books that counter the white supremacy and cis-heterosexual patriarchy (and by extension, misogyny) of our society that by definition belittles and ignores the voices of women of color in general and Black women in particular (misogynoir). Part of the corrective to white patriarchal supremacy is the centering and airing of Black women’s voices through Some of Us Are Brave: A Black Women’s Radio Program that aired on Pacifica-Los Angeles (KPFK 90.7 FM) from 2003 until 2011. The program covered a myriad of issues by amplifying the voices of a broad cross-section of Black women. Some of those voices have been preserved as transcripts and they primarily make up this work. Based on interviews with Asata Shakur, Barbara Ramsy, Carol Boyce-Davies, Euzhan Palcy, Michelle Alexander, Evelyn White, Paula Giddings, Pearl Cleage, Ramona Africa and Sisters on the Run.Thandisizwe Chimurenga is an award-winning, freelance journalist based in Los Angeles, CA. Many of us are familiar with the The Jane Collective or Jane, an underground group of radical feminist activists in Chicago who were part of the the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union that operated from 1969 to 1973 secretly providing safe and affordable abortions to women when abortion was illegal in most of the United States. But few people including myself knew that there were radical feminists right here in Oakland in the 1970’s thru the 1990’s who were also practicing this kind of self help reproductive care and who were teaching women how to help to do their self care and were providing low costs abortions and reproductive healthcare to women who couldn’t afford healthcare fueled by the belief that community based solutions rather than reliance on the state was what was necessary to protect women’s reproductive health. Today Kate Raphael talks to Angela Hume who just released a new book about this radical feminist self care movement in the Bay Area called Deep care The Radical Activists Who Provided Abortions, Defied the Law, and Fought to Keep Clinics Open and she talks about how important this movement is to understand for today when women once again have to create an underground movement to ensure women’s reproductive health care.

We are joined by Penny Rosenwasser, Ph.D., a racial justice leader at Kehilla Synagogue and a founding Board member of Jewish Voice for Peace. Her latest book is Hope into Practice, Jewish women choosing justice despite our fears.
And we are joined by former kpfa women’s magazine producer Kate Raphael. Kate is a Lambda-nominated novelist, journalist, anarchafeminist and queer activist based in Seattle. Her award-winning Palestine mystery series features a Palestinian policewoman. She spent two years doing human rights work in Palestine and five weeks in Israeli immigration prison.
We also have with us Rae Abileah who is a Kohenet Jewish clergy person, social change strategist, writer, and workshop facilitator. Rae is a contributing author to books including Beyond Tribal Loyalties: Personal Stories of Jewish Peace Activists. She co-leads delegations for Eyewitness Palestine) and received ordination as a Jewish clergy person by the Kohenet Hebrew Priestess Institute. She’s a first-generation American, and her Dutch, Ashkenazi Jewish, and Israeli ancestry informs her work toward dismantling white supremacy.
Lastly we hear from Dov Baum, Ph.D, is an Israeli feminist queer activist. She was the co-founder of several Israeli activist groups, including Who Profits from the Occupation, the Coalition of Women for Peace, and Black Laundry – Queers against the Occupation. Now she lives in the Bay Area and works for the American Friends Service Committee as its Director of Corporate Accountability and Research. She is also active with Boycott from Within and with Israelis against Apartheid.

today I want to remember and honor activist musician feminist and abuse survivor sinead oconnor who died too soon at 56 on July 26th of this year. Like many others I hadn’t appreciated the depth of Sinead conners commitment to activism, LGBTQ rights, abortion rights, the fight against sexual abuse and support of Palestinian rights and her fight against racism and the colonization of Ireland which she saw has having many parallels with the colonization of africans. And sadly it is too often only after these truth tellers die that we finally appreciate them So I want to remember sinead oconnor with Allyson McCabe who had just published a book about sinead oconnor a couple of months before she died. McCabe’s book Why Sinead Oconnor Matters is a really fitting tribute to the importance of such a valiant truth teller who was to me cut down by sexism and the mainstream forces of the music industry. In 1990, Sinéad O’Connor’s video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” turned her into a superstar. Two years later, an appearance on Saturday Night Live turned her into a scandal. For many people—including, for years, the author—what they knew of O’Connor stopped there. Allyson McCabe believes it’s time to reassess our old judgments about Sinéad O’Connor and to expose the machinery that built her up and knocked her down. Addressing triumph and struggle, sound and story, Why Sinéad O’Connor Matters argues that its subject has been repeatedly manipulated and misunderstood by a culture that is often hostile to women who speak their minds (in O’Connor’s case, by shaving her head, championing rappers, and tearing up a picture of the pope on live television). McCabe details O’Connor’s childhood abuse, her initial success, and the backlash against her radical politics without shying away from the difficult issues her career raises. She compares O’Connor to Madonna, another superstar who challenged the Catholic Church, and Prince, who wrote her biggest hit and allegedly assaulted her. A journalist herself, McCabe exposes how the media distorts not only how we see O’Connor but how we see ourselves, and she weighs the risks of telling a story that hits close to home.

Today LIsa Dettmer will pay tribute to Jewish lesbian feminist writer and activist Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz who died way too soon in at 72 in 2018 and who was a personal shero of mine and who I have been remiss in celebrating on this show. Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz was a very important activist and writer, who made multiple theoretical contributions to understanding Judaism, lesbianism, and feminism as intersectional identities, extended an awareness of class and economic justice through a Jewish lens, and made visible racial differences within Jewish communities. Kaye/Kantrowitz was the founding executive director of Jews For Racial and Economic Justice and advocated Radical Diasporism as a progressive alternative to Zionism. First we will hear a reading by Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz from her last book “The color of jews: Racial Politics and Radical Diasporism” . and then I will talk Melanie’s long time partner Leslie Cagan who is herself a long time lesbian feminist activist in peace and social justice movements and who was a chair of Pacifica Radio at one time as well.
In the second half-hour, producer Chana Wilson speaks with Zainab Salbi, a long-time International Women’s Rights activist and author. In 1993, Zainab founded Women for Women International, a foundation that supports women survivors of war and conflict. Then a year ago, she co-founded “Daughters for Earth.” Daughters for Earth provides resources to women around the world doing nature conservation, restoration, and regenerative agriculture projects that are contributing to solving the climate crisis.
In the year since its founding, Daughters for Earth has funded 50 women-powered projects to protect and restore the earth. This Monday at 1pm on KPFA Radio’s Women’s Magazine I talk to veteran biographer and gay rights activist Martin Duberman who assesses the life and thought of the combative radical feminist in his 2020 biography “Andrea Dworkin: The Feminist Revolutionary.” Andrea Dworkin (1946-2005) was among the most controversial figures in the second-wave feminist movement, caricatured by her critics as a man-hating lesbian who believed all heterosexual sex was rape. Duberman, who knew her personally, paints a much more nuanced picture, pointing out that Dworkin lived for 40 years in a nonexclusive, occasionally sexual relationship with a devoted male partner and that she was ahead of her time in seeing gender as a social construct that denied the fluidity of human sexual behavior. His account of Dworkin’s childhood and youth depicts a precocious rebel with a deep commitment to social justice and a theatrical, confrontational personality that brooked no compromise or evasions. When she was subjected to a brutal and humiliating vaginal exam after being arrested at a sit-in protesting the Vietnam War, 18-year-old Dworkin wrote to every newspaper in New York City describing her ordeal and the conditions at the Women’s House of Detention. It was the beginning of her lifelong battle to make the world face the fact that women were routinely mistreated and abused, culminating in her famous crusade against pornography. Duberman persuasively argues that Dworkin’s position was misunderstood as a call for censorship when in fact what she advocated was the right of women who had been harmed by pornography to sue its purveyors—and their obligation to prove their case in court. Her response to free-speech absolutists gives a good sense of both her belligerence and her searching intelligence: “People have no idea how middle-classed and privileged their liberal First Amendment stuff is—how power and money determine who can speak in this society.” These words resonate even more strongly today, and Duberman notes that after years of opprobrium, there is now “a modicum of acknowledgment of Andrea’s insistent bravery, her mesmerizing public voice, her generosity of spirit.”

Monaeka Flores, Gwyn Kirk, and ʻIhilani Lasconia share their experiences at the 10th in-person meeting of the International Women’s Network against Militarism held 25-28 May in Olongapo City, Philippines. They discuss their insights and lessons learned regarding militarism, militarization, and colonization. They also talk about what they would “buy” if they were to go on a “feminist spending spree” with the over $2 billion daily US military spending. Naek Flores is a native CHamoru artist and organizer from Guåhan/Guam. She is a core member of dynamic community organizations that focus on CHamoru self-determination, environmental justice, and the protection of sacred sites. Gwyn Kirk is an artist, writer, and teacher. She is a founder member of the International Women’s Network Against Militarism and lives in southern California. ʻIhilani Lasconia is a student, artist, and organizer from Waimānalo Oʻahu. Today on Women’s Magazine magazine we will preview two exciting new lesbian documentaries playing at SF’ Frameline film festival the preeminent LGBTQAI film festival, which is the largest in the world and runs from June 14th to July 2nd. First we talk to Madeleine Lim about her new documentary Jewelle: A Just Vision about the powerful and extraordinarily talented visionary writer, activist, and community-builder Jewelle Gomez who will also be joining us. Not limited to her vanguard work The Gilda Stories, Jewelle’s been at the foreground of myriad culture and movement spaces since the 1960s. Through humorous and thoughtful interviews with Jewelle and a group of friends and collaborators (including Dorothy Allison, Cheryl Clarke, and Ajuan Mance), this doc by Madeleine Lim radiates with the warmth and sharp intelligence of a prolific Black and Native femme lesbian feminist who’s an enduring force across LGBTQ+ organizations and communities, as it explores the lineage that has shaped and been shaped by Jewelle. And then we talk to Lisa Marie Evans, co-director of the new documentary “In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction.” Narrated by LGBTQ+ historian Lillian Faderman and illuminated through interviews with trailblazers like Jewelle Gomez (The Gilda Stories), Dorothy Allison (Bastard Out of Carolina), and Sarah Waters (Fingersmith), In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction charts a literary journey from post-war lesbian pulp to modern bestsellers. Charting the changing socio-political landscapes that encouraged an evolution of the genre In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction pays loving tribute to this evolution of lesbian and queer fiction, told through a lens of broader American history. And lastly we will talk to Allegra Madsen the director of programming at Frameline about the history of the film festival and other lesbian highlights at the film festival.

Today Women’s Magazine we talk about the situation in Israel -Palestine where the right wing governemt of Netanyahu is still in power despite a month of protests in the streets by Israeli’s opposed to this right wing or as some say fascist government. The Israeli news paper Haaertz magazine wrote “In this short time, Netanyahu’s government has caused Israel’s senior economists and the international credit-rating agencies to warn of significant damage to the local economy, in the wake of the judicial overhaul. High-tech companies have threatened to move their money out of the country and even relocate. For the first time in Israel’s history, thousands of reservists have threatened not to report for their voluntary service if the “legal reform” legislation is passed. They go on to say “Israel is facing its most prolonged period of mass protests, with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets weekly. Uniquely, the protests are being backed by many of the major Jewish Diaspora organizations.
And yet in all of this the question remains what is really being challenged in these protests in the street of Israel and what do Palestinians in Israel think of what is going on . To answer some of these questions Dov Baum and I talk to Diana Buttu who lives in Israel-Palestine
Diana Buttu is a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer and a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Diana Buttu previously served as a legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team and was part of the team that assisted in the successful litigation of the Wall before the International Court of Justice. She frequently comments on Palestine for international news media outlets such as CNN and BBC; is a political analyst for Al Jazeera International and is a regular contributor to The Middle East magazine. She maintains a law practice inPalestine, focusing on international human rights law.
And to help me with this interview I am joined by Dov Baum, who is an Israeli feminist activist and scholar who has taught about militarism and the global economy from a feminist perspective in Israeli and U.S. universities, and is currently the director of American friends service committee’s Economic Activism Program here in the Bay Area which supports investor and activist efforts to expose, challenge, and isolate corporate involvement in state violence and human rights violations.. Dov is the co-founder of Who Profits from the Occupation and of the Coalition of Women for Peace in Israel.

Regenerative farming practices rooted in African-Indigenous wisdom and technologies are part of the solution to feeding the world without undermining its ecology
Soul Fire Farm is an example of that. co founded by Leah Penniman and Located in upstate New York soul fire farm is an Afro-Indigenous centered community farm committed dedicated to uprooting racism and seeding sovereignty in the food system.
Soul Fire grows mostly perennial crops—berries, orchards of fruit trees, medicinal herbs—that help capture carbon. They also practice silvopasture, a system in which livestock like poultry and sheep graze among fruit trees, which also works to mitigate the effects of climate change. Much of what is grown is donated to the residents of Albany neighborhoods classed as food deserts, although Penniman prefers the term “food apartheid.”
They raise and distribute life-giving food as a means to end food apartheid. It’s an alternative to the capitalist economic model. It’s about relationships. It’s not just a model of selling.”[9]With deep reverence for the land and wisdom of their ancestors, they work to reclaim their collective right to belong to the earth and to have agency in the food system.Soul Fire farm bring diverse communities together on this healing land to share skills on sustainable agriculture, natural building, spiritual activism, health, and environmental justice.They are training the next generation of activist-farmers and strengthening the movements for food sovereignty and community self-determination.
Their food sovereignty programs reach over 50,000 people each year, including farmer training for Black and Brown growers, reparations and land return initiatives for northeast farmers, food justice workshops for urban youth, home gardens for city-dwellers living under food apartheid, doorstep harvest delivery for food insecure households, and systems and policy education for public decision-makers.
Today Joy Moore and I talk to Briana Alfaro about the Soul Fire farms programs and the importance of its trainings to create the new activists of the future who will help heal our planet. Briana Alfaro co-creates educational offerings as Administrative Program Manager at Soul Fire Farm.

Today we talk to Dan Berger who is the author of the really beautifully written book Stayed on Freedom: The Long History of Black Power Through One Family’s Journey,
and we are joined by Dr. Zoharah Simmons who is one of the subjects of this book and has been a veteran of the civil rights movement, the black power movement and more recently the feminist movement especially around Women and Islam and who has been a tireless activist for over 50 years.
The Black Power movement which is often associated with its iconic spokesmen, derived much of its energy from the work of people whose stories have never been told. Stayed On Freedom brings into focus two unheralded Black Power activists who dedicated their lives to the fight for freedom.
Stayed on Freedom also serves as a corrective to the idea that the Black Power movement was Northern-led when in fact it was activists like Zoharah and Mike Simmons who were leaders in SNCC in Atlanta who first brought Black power into the civil rights movement.
Zoharah Simmons and Michael Simmons fell in love while organizing tenants and workers in the South. Their commitment to each other and to social change took them on a decades-long journey that traversed first the country and then the world. In centering their lives, historian Dan Berger shows how Black Power united the local and the global across organizations and generations.
Dr. Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita from the University of Florida where she was an assistant Professor of Religion and affiliated faculty in the Women Studies Department. Simmons received her BA from Antioch University in Human Services and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Religion with a specific focus on Islam from Temple University as well as a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies. Simmons’ primary academic focus in Islam is on the Shari’ah (Islamic Law) and its impact on Muslim women, contemporarily.

Today we talk to feminist Palestinian Israeli Knesset Member Aida Touma-Sliman about the new right wing government coalition in Israel that is even getting zionist liberals in Israel and the U.S. concerned whether Israel can even maintain its façade of Democracy. much like the Trump election shook people here the new Netanyahu right wing govermnent coalition is bringing a wide range of people out into the streets in Israel/Palestine shocked by the latest elections in Israel and its former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu coalition with the extreme right . To find out more about what is going on on the ground in Israel/Palestine my co-host Dov Baum and I talked to Israeli Knesset member Aida Touma-Sliman. She was the co-founder and general director of “Women Against Violence” – a Palestinian women’s organization that was responsible, among other things, for the creation of the first battered women’s shelters in the Palestinian community in Israel.
Touma-Sliman was the first woman to serve in the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel and is Co-founder of the International Women Commission for Just Palestinian-Israeli Peace.
Touma-Sliman has been one of the strongest voices representing the Palestinian community in Israel and a strong opponent of the Israeli occupation. She has been an outspoken critical voice against the Israeli settlements and the violent attacks on Gaza. MK Touma-Sliman has also played a prominent role in the development of the feminist movement in the Palestinian community in Israel and is regarded as one of the leaders of the Israeli feminist movement as a whole. Voters across the country handed decisive victories to abortion rights in the elections on November 8th, just months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade showing access to abortion was a key issue for voters. Today we devote our show to talking about abortion and reproductive issues. We will start by looking at the fake clinics that exist that mislead women on their reproductive choices with a great documentary by Kate Raphael. Today on Women’s Magazine we listen to a part of an interview that Kate Raphael did with the late great lesbian feminist author Elana Dykewomon in 2010. But before that we are gonna talk to two youth Alejandro and Aaliyah, who are creating and defining community as residents of the Youth Spirit artworks Tiny House Empowerment Village in Oakland. We will hear their writings that are coming out in a new book to be released next month. We will also talk to Alexandria Wilson to give us an overview of how the Tiny Village works. Alexandria is a case management worker at the Tiny Village. And lastly we are joined by mumjahdah) MameDiarra Abdur Rahman who was a former RA at the Tiny Village. Since opening in the winter of 2021, the Youth Spirit Artworks Tiny House Empowerment Village (THEV) has provided housing for houseless youth between the ages of 18 and 23. Beyond shelter, however, THEV has also become a community—a place where young people can build friendships, make art, and think critically about the world they want to build. It was this atmosphere of community that gave rise to the THEV writing group, founded in June 2021 by facilitator Zoe Mosko who will also be joining us . Last month, the group published a book entitled “It Takes A Village: Tiny Houses, Big Voices” and they will be having a book launch on Friday, November 4 where members of the public will be invited for book readings, music, food, and the opportunity to purchase the book. The event is free, and will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Tiny House Village.

Today on Women’s Studies I talk to Queer studies professor Matt Brim about his book “Poor Queer Studies Confronting Elitism in the University. “ In Poor Queer Studies Matt Brim shifts queer studies away from its familiar sites of elite education toward poor and working-class people, places, and pedagogies. Brim shows how queer studies also takes place beyond the halls of flagship institutions: in night school; after a three-hour commute; in overflowing classrooms at no-name colleges; with no research budget; without access to decent food; with kids in tow; in a state of homelessness. Drawing on the everyday experiences of teaching and learning queer studies at the College of Staten Island, Brim outlines the ways the field has been driven by the material and intellectual resources of those institutions that neglect and rarely serve poor and minority students. By exploring poor and working-class queer ideas and laying bare the structural and disciplinary mechanisms of inequality that suppress them, Brim jumpstarts a queer-class knowledge project committed to anti-elitist and anti-racist education.
