This show is all about Bemdigo St - the 2016, 8 month occupation of former East West Link houses that were occupied as part of a campaign to advocate for them to be put on the public housing register. Instead, they have systematically been put on the private rental market or sold. And the homelessness crisis continues. Jasmine, a young squatting activist and budding filmmaker is in the process of making a documentary film about housing in Australia and will incorporate the Bendigo St protest. Kelly sits down to have a yarn with her about it. Hope you enjoy the show!
On this episode of Roominations we follow Kelly down to the Bellarine bayside town of Portarlington where she speaks to single mum, anarchist and community activist Rebecca, whose story of slumlord neglect in her tenanted home has some words of wisdom in it that are good for us all to hear. We'll also eavesdrop on some of the awesome local women of Portarlington involved in the Food is Free Laneway. Spike and Kelly are this week joined in the studio by great guests Samantha Sowerwine, Principal Lawyer with 'Justice Connect Homeless Law', and Bridget Kelly, currently heading up an 18-month co-design project based at 'Cohealth Central City', alongside Spike and those experiencing primary homelessness in the City of Melbourne. This episode is primarily geared towards a group discussion of a controversial paper released this week from 'The Centre for Independent Studies', titled 'Dying With Their Rights On', whose author believes the current ABS definition of homelessness is too broad and that the primary homeless should have public guardians to make decisions for them.
