Jenny Robins, Wells Street’s head of television and film, is no stranger to the art of storytelling. She's embraced her non-linear path in the television industry and has always come back to what she loves most: story. These days she's focused on the future of Wells Street, the production company set up by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She's currently working on her 3rd picture book, Art Directing a TV series and an illustrating an upcoming book with Penguin Random House.

On today's show, artist/songwriter/producer extraordinaire Jenna Andrews shares her story and philosophy of creativity.
Driven by an innate passion for music and her belief in the medium’s incredible universal capability to unite and inspire, creative powerhouse Jenna Andrews has spent the large part of her outstanding career bringing out the best in the most promising talent around the globe. As an artist (Island Def Jam) and a songwriter (Sony/ATV) herself, Andrews is sensitive to the challenges that both up and coming and seasoned singers and writers face in music today, and she carries that knowledge with her in her work as a consultant for industry veteran Barry Weiss’ RECORDS label, as well as in her joint venture with Weiss, publishing company Twentyseven Music at Sony/ATV. The Calgary native has collaborated with some of the most renowned names in the market today, including heavy hitters such as Drake, Jennifer Lopez, Little Mix, Tori Kelly, Jessie J and Benee, as well as producers Noah 40 Shebib, Diplo, DJ Mustard, Max Martin, Illangelo and Stargate. Most recently, she has taken pop singer-songwriter Noah Cyrus under her wing, A&Ring her single “July” and writing the remix featuring Leon Bridges, which has garnered more than 160 million streams to date. She is also celebrating the stellar success of the hit she co-wrote with New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Benee, “Supalonely,” which has produced over 10 million TikTok videos and is currently ranked at #14 on the Spotify Global chart and at #24 on the Spotify U.S. chart.

Loish (Lois Van Baarle) has always been interested in creating art, but the path forward hasn't always been clear or easy. Art school wasn't a p[particularly happy experience for her.
Something many fans of hers may not know is that she is also an incredibly knowledge mental health advocate. On today's show Loish and I have some fun and also talk about the importance of maintaining mental health (in addition to physical health) during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Survival is key and you shouldn't feel guilty if your brain space isn't in a place where it can create right now.

Alyssa Winans took the road less traveled. She wasn't born with a pencil in her hand. Sure, she always appreciated art, but (like many of us) didn't consider it as something that could be a profession. When it came time to pursue plan for life beyond high school, she learned that, well, art is a thing that you can actually earn a living with. That was the turning point for her and pursued it with her whole heart.
Not only did Alyssa get in to RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), she thrived there and her hard work has earned her a spot at one of the most celebrated and visible illustration teams in the world - she's a Google Doodler.
During today's episode, Alyssa talks about her journey, her methodical approach to the discipline of illustration and what she enjoys doing in her off time.

In today's episode, you'll hear storyboard artist Lila Martinez's fascinating story.
Lila Martinez had a passion for animation while watching Disney animated movies, Looney Tunes and Tex Avery cartoons at an early age in Mexico City. Through tenacity and the drive to pursue her deep interest for the medium, she enrolled at the Vancouver Film School, where she diligently studied the craft of traditional character animation and CGI.
While employed in the Mexican feature animation industry as a character animator on Guardians of the Lost Code and Juan Escopeta & Heroes Verdaderos. She co-founded Phenomena a boutique animation studio, to provide pre-production art and animation service for the Latin America television commercial market.
In 2013 she made a decision to focus on storyboarding where she later realize her true calling is storytelling. Her strength lies in visualizing scripted narrative, problem solving story holes and building a character driven sequence. Within a year, she had the opportunity to become a story artist, on an upcoming feature animation produced by Original Force in Los Angeles. The offer came from Sandra Rabins the executive producer on Shrek. At Original Force, she storyboarded Duck Duck Goose (Spring 2018) under Cody Cameron (co-director, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) direction and later Chris Jenkins (producer, Home). In addition to boarding two additional features in the studio pipeline with director John Eng (co-director, Rugrats Go Wild).
When a childhood fulfillment to work on The Simpsons as a storyboard artist came along through producer David Silverman. She was promptly hired to work on season 28 meeting the demanding television schedule and deadlines. Lila then moved on to another Fox TV Animation production, based on the popular Seth MacFarlane's primetime series, American Dad, for season 12. Where she applied her speed, story diligence and knack for problem solving visual clarity, in a fast paced environment.
Lila believes as a story artist each assignment is a creative challenge to exercise her story muscles, and reinforcing each production needs with the best possible outcome. From melodrama to visual gags to strengthening a story point and being a team player for the project to succeed. Her notable qualities is attributed growing up at a young age, with the desire and sheer perseverance to work in the wonderful world of animation.

As an artist, Alison Mann always knew she wanted to work in Animation. She began her career at Nickelodeon Animation Studio as a finance department intern while attending Columbia College Chicago. After graduating, she was offered the amazing opportunity to continue working with Nickelodeon/ MTV as their Recruiter/ Coordinator of Talent Relations. Through her 16 years in the industry, she gained experience in TV, Film and Gaming while working at Walt Disney Animation Studio, Zynga, Disney Interactive, and Paramount Pictures Animation. Currently, Alison is the VP Talent at Illumination Entertainment where she is responsible for supporting the development team, industry outreach and artistic talent acquisition.
Alison is a creative, tech-loving talent scout who believes that students should pursue internships to learn about the animation industry and get their foot in the door. Although her main focus is artistic talent acquisitions, she is passionate about guiding students and professionals to become more presentable and better equipped for the job market.

In today's episode, producer extraordinaire Kim Adams shares her story. Her interpersonal sensibilities and organizational superpowers have become legendary and I'm honored she spent an hour of her time reviewing her career so far and the lessons learned.
About Kim:
Kim Adams most recently was the Head of Production at Emmy Award-winning Oculus Story Studio, a team at Oculus that focused on narrative virtual reality content. Before Oculus, Kim transitioned into VR at Google Spotlight Stories, where she produced Rain or Shine with partner Nexus Productions, and Special Delivery, with Aardman Animations.
From 2009-2013, Kim was a Producer at Pixar Animation Studios, where she played an integral role in the creation of Pixar Canada. Adams led the creation of Pixar’s “Toons” / Short Film division, heading a team of 125 across two companies in two countries. She worked very closely with John Lasseter in producing Toy Story and Cars short-form content. Partnering with eight new directors, she produced 13 short films while shepherding the development of a multitude of additional Pixar shortformat projects.
Previous to Pixar, Kim served as a visual effects producer on several films including Apocalypto, where she was on location in the jungles of Mexico for seven months. She also worked at Asylum Visual Effects on films such as Master and Commander, which was nominated for an Oscar for visual effects.
Kim began her journey in the industry working her way up the editorial ranks on major feature films with such Academy Award winning masters as Walter Murch and Francoise Bonnot. Her first job in the industry was as an intern at George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic.

His uniquely intellectual and whimsical approach have quickly earned him respect within the animation industry and beyond. He is best known for writing the screenplay for Arrival, which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination at the 89th Academy Awards in 2016. Bush is also co-creator, executive producer and writer for Disney XD's animated comedy adventure series "Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero." He also helped develop the Oscar®-winning features "Big Hero 6" and "Frozen," and served as a screenwriter and co-director for this years hit feature “Zootopia.”
Bush, who began his career as a script reader for Academy Award®-winning director Robert Zemeckis, worked as a staff writer on the series "Baby Bob," starring Adam Arkin and Elliott Gould. Bush added producing to his repertoire, serving as executive story editor and co-producer of Will Smith's series "All of Us." Bush has developed original television series for Revolution Studios, Fox and NBC, and feature film projects for New Line Cinema, Columbia/Tristar and 20th Century Fox.
A Harvard University graduate with a degree in English and American literature, Bush is an avid traveler who has visited forty countries on six continents and an accomplished trombone player who has played with several jazz bands over the years. Bush currently resides in Los Angeles with his college sweetheart, three sons and a house full of pets that includes an emperor scorpion, a ball python, a tree frog and an 80-pound pit bull.

Jessica Daniels is an emmy-winning casting director. She's warm, genuine and confident in her craft. We enjoyed a lovely conversation spanning her life and career and she generously shared tips for actors who are pounding the pavement and working toward their big break.

That film comes out in September. Jessica also cast the young actor James Freedson Jackson in The Strange Ones that also comes out later this year, and he won Breakthrough Performance this year (2017) at SXSW.

Brenda grew up as the youngest of 5 children. Her mother helped foster her genuine interest in art and eventually Brenda attended CalArts where she eventually met her husband, fellow filmmaker, Kevin Lima.
Once she graduated, Brenda landed a position with Disney where she was a story trainee on the Disney animated film The Little Mermaid. She was one of several key story artists on Disney's Beauty and the Beast, where she worked closely with future Disney director Roger Allers to define many of the key sequences and motifs used in the film. She later served as head of story, the first woman to do so in an animated feature film, for Disney's animated classic The Lion King.
Brenda also worked in story and development for other Disney animated films such as The Rescuers Down Under, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Fantasia 2000. She joined DreamWorks Animation at its inception in the fall of 1994. She co-directed the Disney·Pixar film Brave, becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best

“William is a bit of a dreamer.” That’s what Will’s teachers often wrote on his reports. He knew from a young age that he wanted to be an animator. He describes his own story so well, that I’ll let him speak for himself here:
“After a degree in animation at Edinburgh College of Art, Will joined Aardman Animations as a trainee assistant animator on Wallace & Gromit's Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Since then he has worked on features, commercials and TV shows including The Pirates, Creature Comforts and Shaun the Sheep. He has written and directed three independent short films and is currently Animation Director on Nick Park’s latest feature film Early Man in Bristol. Will lives in South Gloucestershire, England with his talented wife and two children.”

Director, writer and multitalented artist extraordinaire (Book of Life, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera) Jorge r Gutierrez has pioneered his own path since graduating from art school. Mark Osborne was born on September 17, 1970 in Trenton, New Jersey, USA. He is a director and producer, known for Kung Fu Panda (2008), The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) and The Little Prince (2015). His brother Kent is also an incredible creative human.
Mark has thoroughly explored the worlds of stop motion animation as well as 2D and 3D animation and has garnered an amazing reputation in the entertainment industry as being a great director to work with.
Not only is he passionate about story, he's passionate about helping women in animation get more opportunities in the space and is actively working to help change the landscape. He's got so many practical, actionable advice for creatives and delves into those details on today's show.
John Brooks knows his way around a camera. He has the awards to prove it.
His career in Communication, Film and Television spans 42 years. He has worked with Jim Cameron and Vince Pace on a broad range of 3-D projects since 2001 in various capacities including, DP, Director, Stereo Supervisor, and the was the Vice President for Creative Services for The Cameron Pace Group. For the past 3 years has served as the Executive Vice President for The Cameron Pace Group – China.

While at UCB, she created innovative and laugh out loud choreography for Hollywood’s comedic legends, including Amy Poehler who she worked with in the UCB film FREAK DANCE. Kathryn still performs regularly at UCB where she can be seen every month starring in "Quick & Funny Musicals."
The 2016 Emmy for “Outstanding Choreography” isn’t the only accolade under Kathryn’s belt. She was recognized this year by winning The World Choreography Award for "Best Choreography in a Television Episode" for her breakout work on “Key and Peele.” Along with the original dances that she creates for the small screen, Kathryn has worked with numerous recording artists including the dancers alongside Pharrell Williams on the iconic "Happy" music video, which won her and the team a Grammy for “Best Music Video of the Year.”

Esther Pearl is the founder and Executive Director of Camp Reel Stories. She received her Bachelor’s in Visual Arts from U.C.S.D and her M.B.A. in Sustainable Management from The Presidio Graduate School. She has spent 15 years working in Production Management in the Entertainment Industry. The majority of her career was spent at Pixar Animation Studios where her feature film credits include Academy Award winning films The Incredibles and Wall-e, as well as Monsters, Inc. Her other credits include; Titanic, Starship Troopers, Armageddon and What Dreams May Come.
She was also a founding board member and the former President of the Board of Bay Area Girls Rock Camp (BAGRC). Esther believes in the power of great storytelling to create social change.
