There were plenty of points dropped and penalties missed during Matchday 22 of the 2023/24 Serie A season, with Inter reclaiming their place at the top of the table.
The Nerazzurri were 1-0 winners away at Fiorentina with Lautaro Martinez scoring his 19th goal of the season, but Nico Gonzalez produced a truly awful penalty miss that stopped his team from getting a point.
That was a crucial three points for Inter because Juventus drew 1-1 against Empoli, having seen Arkadiusz Milik get sent off after just 18 minutes. The gap is now one point and Inter have a game in hand.
AC Milan failed to make up any ground on Juventus as they drew 2-2 at home to Bologna, missing from the spot on two occasions. Lazio and Napoli played out a shocking 0-0 draw, and Atalanta reached fourth by beating Udinese 2-0.
Elsewhere, Torino beat Cagliari 2-1, Genoa beat Lecce 2-1, Monza won 1-0 against Sassuolo and Verona drew 1-1 with Frosinone.

Inter were crowned Serie A's winter champions on Matchday 19 of this 2023/24 Serie A season as they scraped a dramatic and late 2-1 win at home to Hellas Verona, with Juventus overcoming difficulty as well to come from behind to beat Salernitana by that same scoreline.
Two European hopefuls lost as Fiorentina stumbled at Sassuolo and Napoli were hammered away at Torino, while AS Roma and Atalanta drew 1-1 in the capital. AC Milan beat Empoli 3-0 and Lazio won 2-1 at Udinese to take full advantage of the other sides slipping up.
Elsewhere, Bologna drew 1-1 with Genoa and Monza beat Frosinone 3-2.

The title of winter champions isn't quite yet in the back for Serie A table-toppers Inter after their 1-1 draw with Genoa on Matchday 18 allowed Juventus to close the gap to just two points as the Bianconeri beat AS Roma at the Allianz Stadium 24 hours later. This Italian Football Podcast is here to chat through those games and all of the rest from the weekend.
On what was a low-scoring weekend, AC Milan and Fiorentina both claimed 1-0 wins over Sassuolo and Torino, respectively, while fellow European hopefuls Atalanta won by that same scoreline at home to Lecce.
Lazio beat Frosinone 3-1 in the highest-scoring game of the weekend, and the biggest shock saw Udinese beat high-flying Bologna 3-0. Elsewhere, Napoli and Monza drew 0-0, as did Cagliari and Empoli, and Salernitana claimed three huge points at Hellas Verona.

Matchday 11 of the 2023/24 Serie A season saw the possible title race take on a new complexion with the headline result being AC Milan's 1-0 home defeat against an Udinese side who were yet to win a game this season.
That defeat and victories for Inter and Juventus mean that things are starting to look a little bleak for Stefano Pioli and his side, albeit with a lot of the season still left to play. Inter's win came away at Atalanta with another superb goal from Lautaro Martinez.
Juventus went away to Fiorentina and whilst they certainly didn't excite the watching fans, they efficiently won 1-0 and they are just two points behind Inter with a lot fewer games to contend with.
To chat through all of the Serie A results from Matchday 11, Euan Burns hosts Vito Doria and Kevin Pogorzelski on this weekend’s Italian Football Podcast. There are two Monday night games this week as well, which will be discussed on the bonus podcast over on Patreon.

This 2023/24 Serie A season is wasting no time at all in throwing up excitement, and we are here to talk through a Matchday 2 that saw Juventus, AS Roma, Lazio, Atalanta and Fiorentina all slip up.
Napoli and AC Milan remain the teams to beat, seeing off Sassuolo and Torino respectively. The Partenopei were again fired on by Victor Osimhen, while Christian Pulisic continued his bright start to life in Serie A with another goal for the Rossoneri.
Juventus drew at home to Bologna, Atalanta lost on the road to Frosinone, Hellas Verona beat AS Roma, and Lazio lost at home to Mateo Retegui and Genoa.
To discuss it all, we are here as Conor Clancy hosts Euan Burns, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria.

The 2023/24 Serie A season is finally underway, and we didn't need to wait long for surprises to be sprung. We are here to talk through all of the Serie A Matchday 1 action.
After Napoli had overcome an early scare at Frosinone to win and Inter subsequently saw off Monza, both AS Roma and Lazio slipped up on Sunday against Salernitana and Lecce respectively. There was good news for the Lupi though as Andrea Belotti ended his 15-month wait for a Serie A goal, scoring twice in an excellent performance, but Lazio threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 in Salento, conceding twice after the 85th minute.
Elsewhere, Charles De Ketelaere enjoyed a dream debut for Atalanta, helping them to a 2-0 win at Sassuolo, and Juventus started well with a comprehensive 3-0 win away to Udinese.
Fiorentina won 4-1 at Genoa and Hellas Verona beat Empoli 1-0. Bologna vs AC Milan and Torino vs Cagliari are Monday night games, so you'll have to wait until the bonus podcast this week to hear those discussed.
To discuss it all, Conor Clancy hosts Euan Burns, Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria.

The 2022/23 season of Italian football has (finally) come to a close and it is fair to say it has been an entertaining one. We had a fourth different Serie A winner in four years, which was Napoli with their first title in 33 years.
There was also an additional relegation playoff at the end of the season which was not expected, as well as an Italian team featuring in all three of the major UEFA competition finals. They may have all lost, but it's the taking part that really counts.
There were some incredible individual seasons for the likes of Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ivan Provedel, Federico Dimarco and many more. We discuss them in our individual and combined Team's of the Season as well as all of the action that went down over the past 10 months.
Conor Clancy is hosting what is our last free podcast until the 2023/34 season gets underway, which you can listen to here. He is joined by Kevin Pogozelski and Euan Burns.

The 2022/23 Serie A season is ove… nope! Before the curtain finally falls on this seemingly never-ending season, Spezia and Hellas Verona will have to do battle in a brand-new relegation playoff after both sides finished level on 31 points. That aside, the regular season has come to an end with everybody having played 38 games.
There wasn’t too much to resolve on the final matchday with the Champions League places already sealed and two of the three relegation places as well, but both Atalanta and AS Roma secured qualification for the Europa League with Juventus qualifying for the Europa Conference League.
Then there were some emotional farewells with Fabio Quagliarella bowing out as a Sampdoria player - and maybe as a professional footballer - in his home city at Napoli’s Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Up north, Zlatan Ibrahimovic hung up his boots at an emotional San Siro.
To chat through the Matchday 38 action - and with a season review pod to come - Kevin Pogorzelski joins Conor Clancy.

Matchday 36 was action packed for issues both on and off the field, with Juventus’ 10-point deduction overshadowing everything else to have taken place over the weekend, even with Cremonese officially suffering relegation from Serie A to immediately return to Serie B.
Juventus’ off-field issues might have played a part as they fell to a 4-1 hammering at Empoli, AC Milan thumped Sampdoria 5-1, Napoli beat Inter 3-1, Atalanta saw off Hellas Verona, and Lazio won at Udinese as well. AS Roma were unable to keep up with their fellow European hopefuls, drawing at home to Salernitana.
At the bottom, Lecce and Spezia played out a goalless draw that really didn’t suit either of them.

With the six teams fighting over three Champions League qualification spots all facing each other, it was sure to be an important weekend of action in Serie A. Whilst AC Milan, AS Roma and Juventus secured vital wins, things are starting to look bleak for Spezia at the bottom.
There was also more racial abuse in the stands to discuss, this time concerning Dusan Vlahovic and the Atalanta fans. Euan Burns is hosting with Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria joining.

Napoli could and should have sealed their third scudetto on Matchday 32 of this Serie A season, and Inter’s win over Lazio put it on a plate for the Partenopei. Needing just a win at home to Salernitana, Napoli conceded late to put the champagne back on ice… not that the city of Naples got the memo.
Back from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Conor Clancy hosts Euan Burns and Kevin Pogorzelski to talk through all of the weekend’s football, having also seen AS Roma Women successfully get the job done in being crowned Serie A Femminile champions on Saturday.
The guys discuss Inter’s win over Lazio, Napoli’s failure to see off Salernitana, Juventus’ latest slip at Bologna, AC Milan and AS Roma’s bore draw in the capital, and plenty more.
There’s a midweek round of Serie A now which will likely see Napoli win the league.

It’s starting to look like nobody in Serie A wants to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s Champions League, and Matchday 30 again saw everybody but AS Roma slip up in pursuit of the remaining places behind Napoli and Lazio.
Juventus lost at Sassuolo, AC Milan drew at Bologna and Inter lost at home to Monza. Napoli themselves drew 0-0 at home to Verona and Lazio beat Spezia 3-0 in Liguria.
At the bottom, Cremonese managed their third win of the Serie A season at home to Empoli and Sampdoria drew at Lecce. Torino and Salernitana drew as well.

There was one particularly stunning result in Serie A on Matchday 28 which saw AC Milan win 4-0 away at runaway league leaders Napoli.
That is where much of the focus lies but with all of the other teams chasing a Champions League place also winning except for Inter, we look at how long Simone Inzaghi has likely got left in the job.
It was an undramatic set of wins for Atalanta, AS Roma, Lazio and Juventus whilst a big game at the bottom between Salernitana and Spezia ended 1-1.

It was a weekend of huge derbies in Serie A, and both Lazio and Juventus were celebrating wins over their respective rivals AS Roma and Inter on Matchday 27, coming out on top in the Derby della Capitale and the Derby d’Italia.
Things got heated in both of those games on Sunday, finishing off a good weekend of Serie A action that saw Napoli extend their lead at the top to 19 points and putting the Scudetto within reach as soon as Matchday 31. The runaway leaders beat Torino handily with a 4-0 win on the road.
Elsewhere, Atalanta fought back to beat Empoli at home, AC Milan lost on the road at Udinese, and Scotland’s Lewis Ferguson was on target again for Bologna. Even Sampdoria claimed a huge 3-1 home win over Hellas Verona to get off the bottom of the table.

AC Milan managed to climb above Lazio by beating Hellas Verona on Sunday night. The Biancocelesti were only able to manage a 0-0 draw with fellow high-flyers Udinese on Sunday afternoon.
Saturday started off with Empoli getting a 1-0 win over Monza. The Derby della Mole followed and whilst it did not entertain the masses, Juventus got a 1-0 win thanks to Dusan Vlahovic’s goal. The final game on Saturday saw Atalanta come from behind to beat Sassuolo 2-1 in Bergamo.
On Sunday, Inter continued their return to form by beating Salernitana 2-0. The afternoon matches saw the 0-0 draw between Lazio and Udinese, a 2-2 draw between Spezia and Cremonese, and then Napoli’s 3-2 win over Bologna.
The day was rounded off by Hellas Verona being beaten 2-1 at home by AC Milan, where Sandro Tonali scored a late winner.

Matchday 6 of Serie A went a little bit wild, particularly on Sunday evening, and Salernitana will somehow have left Turin disappointed and elated with a point after their game against Juventus.
Elsewhere, AC Milan, Inter, and Napoli all scraped wins on Saturday, and the Partenopei moved top of the table and above Atalanta as they slipped up at home to Cremonese in a very Atalanta result.
Bologna beat Fiorentina in the Derby dell'Appennino and started life without Sinisa Mihajlovic well.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the centre of a lot of chat, while attention also turned to Inter, AC Milan, the continuously brilliant Luis Muriel, and a whole lot more.

It's been a strange week for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the AC Milan forward again dominated the headlines and a lot of this week's pod chat.
With a midweek round of Serie A to come, Conor Clancy, Kev Pogorzelski, and Vito Doria decided to talk about less time-sensitive issues than just the weekend's action.
There was chat of the weekend's biggest stories at the top, before the guys dipped into some Zlatan chat, took some listener questions, and sent some love to Serie A's unsung heroes.

Romelu Lukaku again had the last laugh against Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the Belgian was at his very best to send Inter four points clear at Serie A's summit thanks to a 3-0 Derby della Madonnina win over AC Milan.
While the derby understandably stole the headlines from the weekend, there was plenty more action to talk about as well on this week's Forza Italian Football Podcast, as Kevin Pogorzelski and Vito Doria joined Conor Clancy.
Atalanta warmed up for Real Madrid with a stunning 4-2 defeat of Napoli, Juventus beat Crotone, Torino got Eusebio Di Francesco sacked, Roma dropped points, and a whole lot more.

Conor Clancy has had to fight through his tears to host the show, joined by Vito Doria and an unusually supportive Kevin Pogorzelski, who had spent his week crunching the numbers on Serie A's kit crimes.

On the face of it, this was a bizarre time to start following the Roman club. Lazio had won their second-ever Scudetto the previous summer, as well as the Coppa Italia. They won the Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup a year before that. But by March 2001, they were nine points behind Serie A leaders Roma in third place, while their Champions League campaign was over before a ball had even been kicked in Yorkshire.

Now regarded as one of the best club teams of all time, I wasn't exactly confident heading into the two-legged tie against Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and former Nerazzurri star Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The fact they were defending champions only added to my anxiety.
That's what made the 3-1 victory in the first leg all the more surprising, and put things into perspective: I was 90 minutes away from seeing Inter play in the Champions League final.

Italian football has historically been known for placing importance on results over style but there has been an emergence of attack-minded coaches in recent years willing to buck the trend. Sampdoria under Marco Giampaolo and Sassuolo, who have been coached by Roberto De Zerbi since the summer of 2018, were a couple of Italy’s greatest entertainers in the 2010s, possessing the desire to attack as much as possible but were also vulnerable at the back.

On the 29th September, 2019 Franck Ribery rounded off a stunning 3-1 victory for Fiorentina at the Stadio San Siro and he rolled back the years to put AC Milan to the sword with a masterful performance. Up until 2006, I had come to expect disappointment with Italy, especially in light of the Calciopoli scandal that rocked Serie A. We had good players - who in hindsight were more than just good - but other countries could rely on names like Miroslav Klose, Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane and Fernando Torres.
All of these things made Italy's run to the World Cup semi-finals all the more surprising. The Germans stood in our way, and while we had always beat them at major tournaments up to that point, all signs pointed to that streak coming to an end.

There are a million reasons that football matches might stay in your mind. Some of them are thrilling, unexpected affairs that lift your soul with their artistry and leave you on a high that takes days to leave you. In others, there is such beauty that it warms you on a human level with the knowledge that people are able to create such majesty, in the way of a symphony or a painting. There are other reasons, too, and they were all present at a packed Stadio Renato Dall’Ara in Bologna in the early summer of 2014.

The bragging rights of the Derby della Capitale are one of the most important given the passionate and fiercely-contested rivalry, and as such the meetings tend to be tight affairs. AC Milan lost to Genoa as the sides at the bottom made the most of the empty stadiums, as Sampdoria also won against Hellas Verona.

It's a two-man show this week as Conor Clancy returned to host the Forza Italian Football Podcast with Nicholas Carroll.A slightly croaky Conor and an energetic Nic ran through the first two of the four Coppa Italia quarter-finals to have been played out.The guys also discussed Napoli's scintillating recent run, with the Partenopei winning every game since the turn of the year, and wonder whether they can ready themselves for a serious title challenge either this season or next.Roma's defensive improvements are also looked at, as well as AC Milan's slump, Inter's impressive run, and Atalanta's continuing pursuit of a romantic European qualification. Before wrapping up, both Conor and Nic give their honest opinion on Nikola Kalinic, who has recently been linked with a €40 million move away from Fiorentina to China. Nikola, you might not want to listen to this one.If you haven't already, be sure to get involved on our YouTube account, where we are uploading a lot of content as regularly as possible and will continue to do going forward. Please support us on Patreon, in order to help us bring you the best content imaginable, both on YouTube and on the Podcast.Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast on either iTunes or acast, where you can also leave us a generous review.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/forzaitlianfootball.
