Vanessa Bennett and Dené Logan are two soul sisters and therapists who connected over their shared love of depth psychology—known as the psychology of the soul. It is a template for diving beneath the surface to examine the complex natures of being human while on the quest for wholeness, including the relationship to spirit. Through their training and lived experiences with depth, yogic psychology, and mindfulness, they developed a passion for supporting others in living their most authentic lives while cultivating a fulfilling and rich relationship with the Self, capital “S.”
Every Wednesday, Vanessa and Dené look to demystify, de-stigmatize, and desensitize what goes on both inside the therapy room and in daily life, through soul-provoking conversations with fellow seekers, thought leaders, changemakers, and real people during live coaching sessions as they navigate the hard work it takes to be a human.

In this episode of Cheaper than Therapy the Podcast, we sit down with Todd Baratz, LMHC, a certified sex therapist, licensed individual and couples psychotherapist, co-host of the Our Diagnonsense Podcast, and writer who specializes in relationships and sex. We talk about relationships, his philosophy that “you aren’t fucked up - our culture is,” and his first book, How to Love Someone Without Losing Your Mind which is available now! Todd is one of our favorite people and we had so much fun during this conversation. We know you’re going to have so many take-aways and love this conversation with him, as well!

✨ The complex reality of therapeutic support on social media, it’s influence on current societal trends, and the need to hold space for the inevitable lack of nuance that exists in the digital world
✨ An emphasis on the importance of understanding the complexities and meanings behind behaviors, rejecting black-and-white thinking, and taking personal responsibility to recognize the influence of social norms on your own personal development
✨ How our relationship structures are evolving in ways that offer less dogma and more authenticity in our healing, and how that’s begun to shift the societal “normal” away from staying in unhealthy relationships
✨The necessity for therapists to check in with their countertransference and not be too quick to look for a solution when “stuck” is a necessary stage of their own personal development

We’ll be back with all new episodes of Cheaper than Therapy starting next week! But we’re so excited about the launch of Dr. Shefali’s new podcast, PARENTING & YOU, that we wanted to do a throwback episode to when we had her on the podcast to talk about her most recent book, The Parenting Map.
Dr. Shefali is not your typical parenting expert and PARENTING & YOU is not your typical parenting podcast. There are no guest experts or celebrities. Every episode has 2 parents being helped through their parenting journey.
It’s raw, real and totally relatable.
In Ep. 142, we did an Instagram Live with Dr. Shefali, three time New York Times best-sellers author, including her two landmark books The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family.
We talked about:
🌟 The importance of raising our children to be sovereign beings, rather than a possession that fit into our idealized parenting fantasies
🌟 Shifting our parenting paradigms from being in control to being in charge, and what that tangibly looks like
🌟 The difference between ego-enhancing boundaries and life-enhancing boundaries in parenting
🌟 What to do when your parenting paradigm/style doesn’t align with your partners, and what that means for your children
Dr. Shefali has been a huge source of inspiration for both of us - certainly as women and therapists, but even more than that - in the way we show up as parents. We just know you’re going to be as inspired by this conversation with her as we were!

In this episode of Cheaper than Therapy the Podcast, we sit down to address two questions submit by listeners with similar “energies.” One listener wants to know how to stop comparing themselves to their partners ex and feeling insecure in their ability to trust due to past relationships. Another listener is looking for clarification differentiating between an anxious attachment versus being a human seeking safety, consistency, and reassurance in a relationship.

Alexandra has mentored thousands of women in embodying the fullness of their authentic, magnificent Self, and seeing it as sacred and necessary medicine for the planet. On her retreats around the world, she has spoken about the modern sacred feminine spiritual path, and helped many women heal their relationships to their body and their sexuality.
Her latest book Dare to Feel: The Transformational Path of the Heart is available now!
Some Takeaways from this Episode:
✨Feel your Feelings: Why intentionally and artfully feeling our feelings, instead of being afraid of them or intellectualizing them, is such a fundamental aspect of the spiritual path
✨Unique Spiritual Journeys: The importance of holding space for where others might be in their own spiritual development instead of labeling or othering them for not being as embodied as we feel like they ‘should’ be
✨Embodied Authenticity: Why the embodied space of our feelings can serve as an invitation to those we love to be present with us, over the critiques and judgements we often use as a means to avoid our feelings
✨ Start Small: How we can use various access points to start titrating our way into feeling bigger feelings so that we don’t get overwhelmed by moving too quickly

✨How much is lost for mothers when they don’t have a community of women ushering them through the cataclysmic internal shift that occurs when you become a mama

In this episode of Cheaper than Therapy, the Podcast, we talk about the history, the why, and the way forward surrounding the societal norm for women to tear one another down. We talk about using this practice as a point of entry to examine and excavate our inner misogyny and begin to heal our inherited sister wound.
Some Big Takeaways from this Episode:
✨ Support not Competition: Patriarchal foundations have created societal norms that condition women to view one another as competition, rather than form secure attachments and create community
✨Inner Healing is Collective Healing: Going inward and examining our own insecurities and limiting beliefs is imperative to coming together in safety and community

How to negotiate when it feels like the fundamental needs of you and your partner we hitting up against one another
That sometimes in an attempt to preserve a relationship, we end up doing a great deal of unintended emotional harm to one another
Why sometimes the brave step is surrender when we’ve been fighting for something to the point of exhaustion

In today's episode, we explore the idea of what authentic reciprocity looks like in relationships and how we move away from relationships that are based on giving in an attempt to get something in return.
We talk about:
How resentment can be a barometer that indicates when and where our codependent tendencies are being activated
The idea that we entitled to anything from a partner being based on the ownership templates we’ve all been raised with
How often we over-give our time, effort, and energy to others into others hoping they’ll give the same back to us in return, and why the answer us to pull back some of that energy and begin putting into ourselves.
How over-functioners can reframe resentment into an opportunity to step into their own growing edge with vulnerability.

Sarah Ezrin is an author, world-renowned yoga educator, content creator, and mama based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sarah loves guiding people along their wellness and parenthood journeys. Her words, classes, and social media are supportive, healing spaces where people can feel seen and heard.
We sat down with Sarah to talk about:
The unbelievably common sense of identity loss that early parenthood brings to the surface and how parenting can be an invitation to start cultivating a new sense of who we want to be in this life.
The need to understand and work with energy management as parents when we start to feel ourselves in the space of overwhelm.
The deficit we face as a society that has normalized a nuclear family system that has made parenting feel incredibly depleting and isolating.
The spiritual aspect of parenting and why the yoga of parenting is about so much more than being on a yoga mat.
We took away so many potent nuggets of information from this conversation with Sarah and we know you will too!

In this Q&A episode, a listener wrote in asking for advice about a struggle she’s having with the frequency of her partner's desire for sex.
We discuss:
Normalizing the understanding that someone having access to you sexually isn’t a given just because it’s within the parameters of a partnership, and what actually constitutes as sexual assault.
How a society where men have been taught not to feel, often leads to sex as the primary outlet for connecting to their emotions and self-regulation.
The importance of seeking support and taking accountability for facing the underlying codependency that so often accompanies addictive tendencies within ourselves and others..

In this monumental episode we got to sit down with someone who has been a powerful change maker in both of our personal and spiritual journeys, Marianne Williamson. Marianne has been a leader in spiritual and religiously progressive circles for over three decades, published 15 books and is a 4 time NY Times Best Selling Author, and is the founder of Project Angel Food, a non-profit organization that has delivered more than 16 million meals to ill and dying homebound patients since 1989; originally created to help people suffering from the ravages of HIV/AIDS. Marianne also co-founded The Peace Alliance in 2004, and is currently running for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.
We graciously sat down with Marianne to talk about:
Getting real with ourselves in this current moment in history and asking ourselves: Who do I want to be? How do I want to show up? What does integrity look and feel like for me?
How it’s time for women (especially American women) to shift the focus away from men to ourselves, and take accountability for our own role in upholding patriarchal structures so we may begin to do the deep inner healing and generational cycle breaking that is required to stop metaphorically burning our sisters at the stake.
The challenge of choosing love and forgiveness in a time when it may feel almost impossible to pull ourselves out of fear and “othering.”
Living your spiritual principles in your real, physical life and not just in the abstract.
It’s truly hard to put into words the impact Marianne has had on both of our lives. Regardless of your politics, she is someone who is transformative and inspiring.

In this Q&A episode, we’re responding to a listener that asked to hear our thoughts on soulmates. They wrote, “I’d love to hear your thoughts on soulmates. I feel like I met mine at a time in my life, but it wasn't possible to be together. It still isn’t,, but I still feel it to be true. I always thought I had a strong intuition, but I'm starting to think I'm crazy.”
We talk about:
How society conditions women to associate our intuition with being crazy, in an attempt to shut down the feminine energy within us and force us to embody the wounded masculine.
The idea that a soulmate doesn’t have to be somebody that you are destined to be in partnership with in this lifetime, but that a soulmate is somebody that your soul has been with or will be with in another lifetime.
That a soulmate doesn’t necessarily need to be a romantic love and may simply mean that your souls have agreed to embark on a journey together in whatever shape that may take form.

In this session, we sat down with Claire who is facing the end of her marriage, and struggling to come to terms with what it means to be a woman, navigating a heavy separation, in this society.
We talk about:
Recognizing that society conditions us to believe that life as a woman means constantly feeling unhappiness, regardless of partnership, but that there is actually no reason that we need to be in a tolerable level of permanent unhappiness, especially to be in a partnership
Owning our part by accepting that, as an overfunctioner and/or codependent, we may believe we have to work hard at our relationships in order to be worthy of love and acceptance from the other person and we need to, instead, stop the self-abandonment and tap into what we truly want
Accepting that sometimes we may be walking through life’s fires alone, with no guidance, and we have to lean into trusting in Self and Source as we enter a new phase of life

In this episode, we go into the archives and bring back one of our incredibly wise guests, Buddy Wakefield, from one of our first episodes ever on July 15, 2020!
Buddy Wakefield is an American spoken word artist, a three-time poetry slam world champion, and the most toured performance poet in history. In this unbelievably powerful conversation, Vanessa and Dené talk to Buddy about the dangers of tranquil states of existence, how we can benefit from exploring our “scary thoughts,” and the victim, villain, and hero archetypes we’re being asked to question in our current climate.

How the framework of all of our relationships are changing in a radical way
The resistance that comes to the surface whenever an outdated system or way of living is experiencing an imminent ego death
Why the most fundamental aspect of any form of awakening is a commitment to speaking the truth
The importance of meeting moments of transition with curiosity - especially when we feel most activated by someone’s perspective that deeply challenges our own

What it means to claim a sense of authentic power in our lives
Understanding some of the ways we play into the systems we feel most challenged by when we live an ‘outside-in’ life vs. an ‘inside-out’ life
What some of the archetypal narratives in literature around the suppression of feminine energy can teach us about the path of female empowerment moving forward

In this Q&A episode, a listener wrote in asking what to do with the knowledge that their partner is no longer physically attracted to them. When a relationship reaches the point where we are no longer having sex and we are on the verge of a break up - what advice would we give?
We’re talking about:
Acknowledging the pain and difficulty about the situation on both sides.
Letting go of the tendency to focus all of our energy on the negative, so that we might see this as an invitation back to ourselves and a way to reconnect with our individual turn ons.
Realizing that relationships and life ebb and flow, and how we might have important conversations with one another to dig deep and ask, “Is this about their attraction to me, specifically, or do one or both of us not have a vibrancy for anything in life right now?”
Remembering that the longevity of a relationship does not determine the level of happiness or success, and that a relationship ending doesn’t mean it was a failure.
And so much more!

In this Q&A episode, a listener writes, “My friend uses pronouns that I don’t agree with and I’m not sure what to do. Is it necessary to keep the friendship honest?” We discuss:
Challenging ourselves to be brutally honest with ourselves first, and how we get clear about what’s underneath our intentions for wanting to speak up.
Owning the possibility that we may feel like there’s a right and wrong way for others to be, and that we may have a subconscious desire to express to a friend that they’re wrong.
The importance of checking in with ourselves about how we often begin to show up in a similar energetic to the thing that we are holding with contempt in our space of certainty that others are wrong in their perspectives.

In today’s episode, we’re addressing some of the responses we received on social media around what it means to live an untamed life.
We’re discussing:
Why we sometimes feel the need to sweep things under the rug and not speak up in order to please the people around us, and how it inadvertently keeps our relationships inauthentic instead of giving us the security we’re looking for.
How we oftentimes feel constrained to a certain way of living, and the importance of digging deep to discover those constraints live within our own mind and that those external pressures can be removed.
That when we are truly our most authentic self, that is how our people find us, and how we reframe our mind to look for things that validate our Self.

In this Q&A episode, a listener tells us they’re struggling with their recent rapid weight gain, and the negative reinforcement from their partners remarks about how proud they’d be if they regained their previous body type.
We talk about:
Every person having a right to bodily autonomy in all facets, the right to show up in their life exactly as they are
How, as a partner, it’s our role to ask what that person wants and where they are in the process, rather than projecting what we think is right for them
The need to reach within ourselves and find resilience, so we don’t become enmeshed and codependent on others, and getting comfortable with the idea that maybe not all relationships are meant to continue if you are no longer in alignment

Richie Reseda is a feminist ally, community organizer, recording artist, and founder of the social-impact record label, Question Culture. Success Stories, the anti-patriarchy organization he started while incarcerated, was chronicled in the CNN documentary “The Feminist on Cell Block Y.” He changes California prison policy with Initiate Justice, an organization he co-founded in prison.
We talked with Richie about:
The part he played in introducing Bell Hooks’ work to incarcerated men as a way to illustrate and push back on the Soul murder a patriarchal society demands of men
How we teach our children to understand the truth of their power vs the false ideations this society has taught them about where there power lies - and how they might reach for love and safety over fear
Why our work is not to strive for reform, but rather the abolition of the colonial system were currently living with
The importance of understanding that the societal ‘rules of governance’ are essentially violence that perpetuates more violence, given that they are not collaborative and created with a community’s consent
Why the patriarchal narrative of right and wrong or ‘good and bad’ always equate to a form of domination, and why the evolution of a Soul based societal perspective is rooted in curiosity, consent, and collaboration
This conversation with Richie is truly one of the most profound ones we’ve had on the podcast. We are certain that you will be as impacted as we were by the calls to introspection and action he elicits through his words.

We discuss:
The differentiation between allowing ourselves time to fully feel the most challenging moments in our lives vs letting those moments define us.
How what we’re grappling with on an individual level is so often mirrored by what we struggle with as a collective
Our perspectives on how therapy is currently being utilized and how self-help can sometimes turn into one more external source of dependency.

In this live coaching session, we sat down with Steven to talk about the issues of betrayal and differing levels of desire within a marriage.
We explore:
how our attachment wounds inevitably start to play out in our adult relationships and how understanding our codependent tendencies becomes the first step we take toward our own healing
why the people in our lives often start taking us for granted if we’re not treating ourselves with love and respect first
the importance of maintaining a sense of autonomy - our own interests, communities, and practices of self-care - both inside and outside of a relationship
We were so grateful to Steven for being so open about a relationship topic that so many of us are grappling with every single day.

Jeremie Lotemo is a poet, writer, and coach who utilizes his insights on relational dynamics to help men live from their deepest core. Through his writing, his podcast, 1:1 coaching and building community, Jeremie supports others in the integration of their deepest shadows. We sat down with Jeremie to discuss: 1. The invisible initiation society puts young boys through, where they are socialized to sever their authenticity in an attempt to maintain a sense of acceptance and connection to other men. 2. How women can support the men in their lives by seeing them in the highest vision of who they are, and exchanging the desire to mother them for a practice of allowing compassion and boundaries to exist at the same time. 3. How understanding our partner’s attachment style and wounding can expand our own capacity to lean into moments of discomfort and grow our ability to stand in the fire of our relationships in order to allow something to be purified. 4. Why it’s so important to understand how the mother wound shows up in men, and the ways that it’s impacting so many men’s ability to find fulfillment in their relationships, as well as within themselves.
Jeremie’s work offers such powerful insights into what’s underneath so many of the relationship challenges we face. We know you are going to love this conversation as much as we did. Cheaper than Therapy is back for Season 3! In this solo episode, Vanessa and Dené talk about what they’ve been up to during the podcast’s hiatus and some of the patterns they’ve noticed coming up lately in conversations. They discuss: 1. What it feels like to be witnessing a massive reclaiming of the feminine energy that the current patriarchal structure of society has conditioned us to suppress. 2. What it means to shift from the practice of looking outside of ourselves for answers to beginning to live a life governed by an inner authority. 3. The shifts we’re seeing collectively in terms of people really starting to question for themselves what will bring an authentic sense of fulfillment – in work, in relationships, and in their lives in general. 4. The idea that some of the changes we’ve been facing as a society have been in service of bringing all of us – regardless of how we identify in terms of gender – in alignment with the reclamation of the feminine.
Dené and Vanessa also share details about their upcoming New Years Retreat, FROM SELF-ABANDONMENT TO INNER BELONGING: THE INTENSIVE happening in Carefree, Arizona at Civana Wellness Resort and Spa, January 1-6, 2023!

We discuss the differentiation between intentions and outcomes, the codependent survival strategy of making ourselves and our needs smaller to maintain connections, the importance of not deciding for others which truths they can tolerate hearing, and asking ourselves, “what do I imagine it would feel like if I actually felt like I was heard?
We loved having the opportunity to bring our TAT LAB community in on one of our conversations, and we know you’ll have some of your own takeaways after hearing the processing we did together as a group.

Bryan Reeves is a former US Air Force Captain turned life coach, author, podcast host, and blogger with over 30 million readers. Since 2014, he has been coaching couples and men to help them discover and live out their dreams. His new book “Choose Her Every Day (Or Leave Her)”, discusses men’s challenges with intimacy and boundaries and thriving in intimate relationships.
We talked with Bryan about what happens in a society where we look to our intimate relationships to be the containers in which we find adulthood - when that’s not what they’re supposed to be for, the trouble with us attempting to maintain a “two person village,” the healing that comes from men learning to trust other men after a lifetime of experiences that have taught them not to, and why we’re drawn to partners that have the qualities we long to experience within ourselves - but then we immediately reject those qualities within them.
This conversation provided potent insight into the ‘why’ behind the relational dynamics we’ve all struggled with. We know you’re going to find it as valuable as we did.

In this solo episode, we hit record on a passionate conversation we were having based on some questions we received from all of you. We dove into the question, “what do I do if my partner no longer finds me attractive”, to unpack the social and cultural pressures placed on what monogamy “should” be.
We love having conversations about various ways of breaking out of codependent paradigms and cultivating relationships that not only support our growth - but are in alignment with our authentic values. We hope this episode leaves you with some questions to explore for yourself and those you’re in relationship with, and challenges you to think about what kind of partnership would feel most true to who you are becoming.

We feel so lucky to have not one, but two incredible guests that we treasure so deeply. We’re thrilled to bring back two of our favorite guests, Mildred Murillo and Ashley Torrent. Milly is an astrologer and spiritual coach who believes astrology is about guiding her clients to discover the divine wisdom and strength that is within them. Ashley is a psychospiritual counselor, intuitive medium, and teacher who believes that we are all mediums, psychics, empaths, and energy healers—we all have this magic inside of us that many have forgotten—and her intention is to help us remember. We sat down with Milly and Ashley to discuss how we need to stay grounded in the physical world while holding all of what is happening within the cosmos, why intuition is not only the language of the Universe - but a key component of reclaiming a connection to our inner knowing, the importance of staying present with one another’s pain during the most challenging aspects of our human experience, and why every single element of our journey is necessary to support us in understanding who we are meant to become. Mildred and Ashley have both had such a profound impact on our lives, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to share their wisdom with all of you! In this solo episode, we discuss some of our perspectives on parenting. We explore the possibility that feeling a sense of ownership of our children is a bit of an outdated paradigm, leaning into a more spiritual perspective of parenting which acknowledges the role our children can play in being their parent’s teachers, and that our job as parents may be more about honoring the Truth of who our children are instead of attempting to mold them into who we feel they’re supposed to be.

In this live coaching session, we talk with Chelsea about certain patterns she’s noticed in her dating experiences over the last decade since her marriage ended.
We dissect the commonly used phrase that comes up in the world of dating around finding “emotionally unavailable people” and how we can often be creating a distraction away from our own work when we’re fixing, helping, and mothering others in order to feel valued. We also explore how to begin to look at dating as an opportunity to stay curious and open hearted, understanding that we usually attract people who are mirrors of what we still need to look at and heal within ourselves.

We sit down with Madison to explore the path she has taken to being such a potent guide to others on their healing journey.
We discuss the somatic manifestations of trauma that often occur when we attempt to bypass acknowledging what we’ve been through, the experience of exile as an initiatory phase on the path to inner belonging, the collective sense of exhaustion we are experiencing from attempting to hold the opposing tensions of nuance and fear, and the sneaky ways some of our codependent tendencies can creep back in through outlets like social media and outsourcing our power to others.

In this solo episode, we explore the conversation that seems to be coming up quite a bit around toxic positivity, and how using this phrase may impact our ability to stay curious and view others without judgment.
We discuss the challenge around the loss of nuance that has come with the rise of mental health conversations happening on social media with character limits, the fact that life will inevitably hand us moments that we can’t bypass our way through, and that curiosity and judgment can’t live together - which is why we can’t form genuine connections with others if both are present.

For over 20 years, she has been helping families thrive through her conscious guidance approach to parenting. We talk with Katherine about the gifts that come from meeting our children with a sense of humility, the antiquated idea that any resistance from a child should be seen as a form of disrespect, how our children hold up a mirror and offer insight into what happens for us when we feel out of control, and how to embrace parenting as a paradigm-shifting opportunity for us to do our own reparent work. Be sure to listen with a pen and paper close by for this episode to write down all of the phenomenal takeaways from Katherine. You can connect with Katherine on Instagram @katherinewintersellery and through her website consciousparentingrevolution.com. Interested in joining a live virtual group class with us? In this live coaching session, we talk with Jane about the contradictory feelings that come up as we’re on the precipice of a new phase of life.
We explore the realities of prioritizing our needs as parents,, how sometimes we can be attempting to postpone the action steps of going after what we really want by continuing to pursue additional letters behind our names, how much power we can find when we stay open to receiving instead of attempting to figure things out, and the sense of freedom that comes from a practice letting go of attachment to outcomes.

In this solo episode, we explore the shadow elements of being raised as women in a wounded patriarchal system.
We talk about the differentiation between ‘wounded feminine’ and ‘healthy feminine’ energetics, how some of the narratives we were raised with have at times caused us to unconsciously reject elements of ourselves and other women, the challenge of confronting some of our subconscious programming while attempting to be present in relationships, and why working as therapists has given insight into where we’ve previously missed the mark in our perception of the inner world of men.

In this live coaching session, we sit down with Maia to talk about her experiences with codependency and boundaries in her marriage.
Our conversation raised common relational questions like, “is it me?” “Is it them?” “Is it our communication?” “Could I be different or better?” And more painfully, “is this my fault?”
This session was such a beautiful example of how often our work in relationships is to invite curiosity and compassion back in where it has been lost - starting first and foremost, with ourselves.
