In this episode:

I found the pictures I took from my first visit! It was December 2013 ... and they helped fill in the details. Such a wonderful week on the island. Of course, I was fortunate to have a person who lived there be my guide and planner!

So what did we do? What did we see? Listen in.

I also mention that just a month ago I survived ... actually dodged as the Doc described it ... certain death as it was found that the main artery to my heart was blocked. Like 99% ... VERY thankful adn amazed that with the technology today a 40 or so minute procedure (stent) opened and cleared it and today I live with new vigor and tremendous gratitude. It is probably very fortunate this was found HERE .. as I was able to make it to the hospital in 5 mins.

The Kauai Coloring Contest is back! Let's do that again. Open to all ages .. Info and Download here: Color Kauai Contest  NOTE you do not have to tag or post to FB or Instagram! Despite a natural disaster on Kauai's North shore a couple of months ago where 50 inches of rain dropped in 24 hours -- officials and residents are in process of recovery -- the island life goes on.

In this episode I sit down with Kevin, long time listener and supporter of this podcast! He is in the outdoor studio in beautiful Poipu, the picnic table in front of Little Fish Coffee across from Kiahuna Plantation -- I, from the kitchen table table in HOT (114F) Phoenix, AZ.

We catch up and talk story about his visit just a few weeks ago.

NOTE: Over the past week Kauai has been devastated by flooding never seen before on the island. This episode was recorded a few weeks ago and the references made about the recent rainfall was referring to the months of Jan - March. I will be talking about the current situation in the next episode and how that will be effecting your visit if you are going to the island in the coming months.

In Episode 52 I am dealing with what I feel is the mainland funk!

Topics today include island traffic, the record rainfall Kauai has experienced in January, February, and March ... which many believe has contributed to the 100 year floods devastating the North Shore this past week in April.

Emails and apologies for not getting to those in a timely manner!

Thank you Kauai Talk listeners.

UPDATED Well, if you listened to the episode last night, you heard a bad edit version! They say you should always check your audio file ... and I did this AM only to find the first minute or so deleted! This is the fixed one.

In this episode I discuss the reasons that led me to make the decision to move back to the mainland. It wasn't an easy one but was inevitable.

If you have been a regular listener, you know this decision weighed heavy on my heart. Yet, when it came to go, I was at peace with my final days on island and had an optimistic outlook for what the future holds.

This episode is recorded for the many people who have said HOW COULD YOU LEAVE THAT PLACE?! WHY are you leaving paradise?! Are you crazy?

Well, here ya go. I collated the many responses I have given over the past three and a half years to visitors, family, and friends when the topic of living in Hawaii (Kauai) has come up. And it came up a lot.

The podcast will continue ... I have a number of ideas for future episodes and plan to use my many resources and contacts to bring you valuable shows! Kauai connects us. Stay tuned.

I've landed in Phoenix, AZ. For now.

Granddaughters await my visits.

Aloha.

It was an unusually quiet Saturday morning. January 13, 2018.

I left for work and an accident had closed the road. Traffic was at a standstill. I decided to go to Starbucks, get a coffee, and wait it out.

It was around 7:15 A.M.

At 8:07 A.M. an emergency alert come over every phone in the place ... and for the next 30-40 minutes I and Hawaii prepared for what might have been our last minutes alive as we were warned of an incoming missile and to take cover.

In this episode, I talk about that moment and day. Yes it was terrifying. As I re-tell the story today, I found the texts and calls I had with my family humorous. I invite you to listen and smile or even laugh along with me today.

Make no mistake, at the time, we weren't laughing nor feeling good. It was sad in my last discussion with Beth, my daughter, as we faced the possibility of knowing this may be the last we talk.

While heavy, I think your will find my account a good listen.

We are all thankful to be here today.

Wondering what the Top 10 stories were in 2017 here in Kauai?

I share two lists in this show ... the list found in the local paper and the list from my 2017 of the past year on the island. They're pretty different.

The picture for episode 49 (found on the web site) is from January 1, 2017 - the first sunrise from Waipouli Beach. It's one of my top events-memories-stories from the year.

Highlights:

the top news story

I ate the first one of these - a Kauai original

I'd never drank one of these!

My first purchase of that

I did this with the DOORS OFF

AND ... my decision where I will be later this month

It's the LAST day of 2017 and I am posting the last episode of Kauai Talk of 2017! Listen in as I talk about the following things:

  • I finally hiked the hike I have wanted to do since coming to kauai 4 years ago. It was Christmas Day and did not disappoint. (See one of the pictures from the hike here: click --> Coastal Views and here -- > Napali
  • In the news and headline highlights
  • Some listener email ... one of which was in response to my LOCAL Guide service.

I've made a decision as to what I am going to do relative to living in Kauai! I tell you in this episode when I will make it public.

Hope you all had a nice Christmas ... I've never really felt like it was Christmas on the island ... everything just seems out of place. Those that have lived here all their lives tell me it's all they know so Santa in slippas and a red aloha shirt and shorts is great! Xmas trees make great bonfires months later too.

Of course, it is the Aloha spirit that one feels on a daily basis here that most closely relates to the holiday good feelings and truly contributes to making Hawaii the place that it is.

Thanks for listening! If you have questions on any thing heard in the episodes or wish to contact me directly, email those things to kauaitalk @ gmail . com (no spaces)

Aloha,

Phil

A few months ago I received an email from resident Joey Wray of Kaua'i who offered to share his views and thoughts regarding living on the island. He and his family have been here over 10 years. We cover a wide range of topics that I think are revealing.

Of note: family support, kids and school, why it's been 4 years since he travelled off the rock, finding work - he is the owner of Ready Rentals and specializes in baby care/needs and wheel chairs.

I explain why I titled this episode the Lost one ... were you a Lost fan? Well .... so was I! but you will have to listen as I explain the reasoning. It's a lot less confusing why I chose it than the actual series, Ha!

Here is a summary of the topics and info in this show:

  • My FAVORITE island bloom and the legend behind it!
  • The really surprising activity that is the number one cause of death to visitors to Hawaii - and Kauai.
  • Staying safe while hiking - My friend and owner of Kauai Hiking Tours, Jeremiah Felsen, returns and gives us a TON of recommendations for HIKING Kauai.
  • Southwest is finally starting flights to Hawaii next year (2018).

Aloha listeners. Here's the gist of Episode 43.

It's RAINING as I begin recording this episode and in true island life fashion, this episode is recorded over a 10 or so day period!

  • I talk about a couple of news items.
  • Hope's coloring contest entry. It's really nice. #colorkauai - see it here < -- click the link
  • The appearance of living in Hawaii. There is a stark reality shift from the pictures and things you read about on the websites versus the actuality of moving and living here. It's very different than the feeling you have when you are vacationing here. Yet, there is a very real awesomeness of island life. Unfortunately, it is most often not enough to overcome the things that ultimately lead one to the tough decision of going back. Back to family and friends and cheaper milk :-)

I met the founder of The Kauai Marathon, Jeff Sacchini, over a year ago. At that time I had always seen him running around the South Shore ... and then I found out he not only an avid runner but the founder of The Kauai Marathon.

We sat down recently to talk about this popular and growing island event.

Jeff shared the inspiration for the race, some stories about the course and past runners, numerous facts, and his top areas for running on the island.

Also, check out the logo and the story behind its design.

The interview begins about the 19 minute mark.

I also talk about my recent trip up the Napali Coast to the sea caves, a new coffee business, Aloha Coffee, that has opened in Koloa, and read an email from a new listener regarding renting a car.

It's become the topic I am most often asked. Living on Kaua'i.

People that visit either develop the dream of living here someday or have had the dream of living here.

In this episode, I share a story from a person that was planning on moving here .. with no knowledge of how it would be once she got here. I also have an email from a person that has visited many times and one a person who has made a decision on their move to Kauai after their last visit.

This episode will be the first of a number more on the topic of moving and living on the island.

This episode's topic is golf! Of all the amazement found on Kaua'i, did you know there is one course rated a TOP 100 Public Golf course (#65) on the North Shore?

A course that National Geographic Traveler Magazine ranks as one of the Top 5 most scenic golf course settings in the WORLD?

A course that ranks by the fans of Golf Digest as the top course in Hawaii?!

A course that is a must play? Yes. And best yet, those accolades are found with ONE course. It's the Princeville Makai Golf Club and it's open to the public.

I was fortunate to sit down with the marketing director of the Makai Golf Club, James Walker and talk about this special Kaua'i course.

Episode 40 highlights:

  • The secret bamboo forest
  • The "easiest" hole ... but stay out of the bunkers
  • 5 signature holes
  • The 4 Day Grow Your Game Get Away
  • The SUNSET tour for all

In this episode of the Kaua'i Talk Podcast, we're bring the heat ... or rather bringing some expert advice on beating the heat and humidity as summer as arrived on the island.

And if you know how to dress, you can be really comfortable. And that means knowing how to dress for island lifestyle.

I went to talk to Laura, manager at Pineapples Boutique, a local owned island business that I found to have great options in dressing for comfort and style in our warm and humid summertime weather! She, along with her assistant, Judith, provided great tips and suggestions for what to wear, advice on what and what not to pack, and more.

Key is keeping things simple and light. I think you'll enjoy our discussion. It was informal and done one afternoon on location at the Coconut Marketplace in Kapa'a.

I also have a great suggestion for a sunset tour ... on the Makai Golf course. It so fun and has a fantastic vantage point for watching a sunset from the North Shore. Check it out. Sunset Tour

Over the past couple of weeks I listened to two conversations regarding the reservations on a popular island tour. Knowing the business and being familiar with both companies, I knew exactly that the information wasn't exactly as was being conveyed.

It wasn't as cheap as advertised; it wasn't really the agent's discount. And it wasn't a preferred time to fly ... far from it.

I talk about that and give you some ideas and advice on what you should/could do before booking your tours on Kauai.

Also, one of the most often asked questions of me! Can you guess? It's not how did I come to live here ... that's the MOST asked question. The question I talk about today is this one, "Are you going to stay?"

Do you know the island faces a most dangerous threat today. And it's not a hurricane.

Authorities are so concerned that over 50 experts met last fall here on Kauai to determine a plan of action regarding how to respond to an invasive species should it find its way to the shores of this Hawaiian island.

It's the vicious mongoose. And its ability to attack our native bird population could result in changing the island bio-landscape forever.

We talk about that today in Episode 15 ... a little tougue-in-cheek conversation with Kauai by Stephanie and myself.
