Hello and welcome to Episode 003 of the Mental Health Awareness podcast. I’m your co host Jason (and I’m Jen) and welcome to the third episode. A place where we dispel the myths, misconceptions, and misunderstandings of mental health, so that you can walk away feeling empowered, informed, and encouraged! If you find this podcast helpful, we would ask that you subscribe and share it with your friends.

Today's topic: Part 1 of Ways to Treat Depression

These are things outside of medications

  • Go to therapy. Everyone can benefit from talking to a licensed professional. Someone outside of the family, with an unbiased perspective, can offer you ideas and observations that they can offer you, in addition to giving you coping skills. This is in addition to the support group.
  • Eating cleaner. What you consume affects you directly. We did the Whole30 diet for an entire month and we eliminated several foods from our diet. As a result of cleaning our diet, Jason felt more consistent in his energy and experienced less high and low energy/mood swings. Jen's skin improved. Tweaks can make an impact in your emotion and stability.
  • Exercising more & get some sun
  • Consume positive material & surrounding yourself with good friends/family
    • Personal growth: The Road Back to You, by Ian Morgan Cron
    • Coronavirus: don't have the news playing in the background 24/7
    • Type 4, for any enneagram followers, I'm easily affected by what I hear and see, so to function well for my wife and family I have to be very conscious of what I consume

Great, so thanks for tuning in to Episode 3 of Mental Health Awareness. Stay tuned for Episode 003, Ways to treat depression. Today's topic: What is depression?

So what is depression?

  • What is DSM? Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, used to diagnose mental disorders.
  • Based on DSM-5 criteria, "unipolar depression" is marked by experiencing 5 of the following symptoms, at least 2 weeks or more.

Symptoms to look out for in yourself or in others, taken from DSM-V diagnostic criteria

  1. Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day.
  2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day.
  3. Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain, or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.
  4. A slowing down of thought and a reduction of physical movement (observable by others, not merely subjective feelings of restlessness or being slowed down).
  5. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day.
  6. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day.
  7. Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day.
  8. Recurrent thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide.

What isn't depression?

  • It isn't typical responses to life, e.g. loss of a loved one

She is a Psych Physician Assistant, practicing for several years

  • In her experience, she's observed a culture of shame and embarrassment when a person comes to her about needing therapy/getting help, when it comes to mental health.
  • Not the case with physical issues, but , anxiety, emotional well-being, it becomes taboo, and if you need therapy. So because of the shame/misconceptions about mental health and mental well-being, she wanted to share my medical observations, experiences, and tips that she's found to be helpful
  • It shouldn't be an act of courage, to talk about mental health, your anger, anxiety, depression, paranoia, everything, and to find some solutions that will help you. But we’re only going to find that out by TALKING ABOUT IT.

What are the 4 tips to improve your mental health daily?
