Welcome to A Woman’s Brew – The Podcast, where women talk about beer! A Woman’s Brew is two beer loving women on a mission to get more people drinking and talking about great beer. Joanne & Tori want to talk you through beer styles, breweries we love, beer tasting tips, beer traditions and more from the world of craft beer. Joanne has been drinking beer for 12 years since she was handed a Sam Adams Boston lager and realised that not all beer was yellow and fizzy. She was traveling the world while working on cruise ships as the time and tried every beer she could get her hands on. About 6 years ago she decided she wanted to learn more about where the aromas and flavours in her favourite beers came from. She started drinking every kind of beer she could get her hands on, reading about beer and learning how to brew her own. During lockdown in the UK in 2020 she set herself the challenge to pass the Cicerone Certified Beer Server exam to earn a qualification in beer, just for fun! She passed with 97% and is now building her beer school Love Beer Learning to support other women discover beer, build their confidence in beer tasting and amplify their voices in the beer community. Though most people don't believe it, Tori was born and raised near Boston in the US but has been living in the UK since 2013. When she first moved here, she stuck to ciders, Brewdog , and Brewdog guest beers and was a pretty big Brewdog fangirl. Within the last 2 years she started to branch out as she saw the scene grow to a point that she couldn’t miss out on it any longer. She says that since the beginning of 2020, she’s really belly flopped off the deep end into craft beer and hit a level she never thought she would where she now considers this her hobby. She loves taking photos in her spare time and when she travels, so already had a few Instagram accounts on the go, which is why she chose Instagram as the platform to start giving her thoughts on the beers she was trying. She refers to these as her “opinions nobody asked for” and it was just a way for her to pass time during lockdown while dusting off her old, rusty writing skills from many moons ago when she was a journalism student. She met Joanne in a Facebook beer group and after seeing her pass the CBS exam, approached her to create this podcast, where women teach women about beer! In our latest Brave Noise episode we talk to Ruth from Elusive Brewing. We were privileged enough to be part of the brew day for their Brave Noise beer, which will raise money to support The Coven’s wellness officer program.
Ruth takes us through the process the brewery took to get to brewing the beer and talks about the impact having a code of conduct has for Elusive. We also share our experiences of beer festivals and the change we would like to see in the industry.

We are back making a Brave Noise, this time with Fierce Beer!
We chat to Kirsty from Fierce about their version of the beer and why they took part in the initiative. Kirsty comes from a background working in beer bars and has a lot of insight around what it’s like for bar staff in the beer industry. Fierce donated their portion of Brave Noise profits to the Drinks Trust to support workers in the hospitality industry. It’s good to remember that the issues raised by the Brave Noise initiative and those like it affect not just those working in breweries, but the hospitality industry as a whole.

Some of the most interesting innovation in craft beer can come from historical sources. In this episode we have gathered together a selection of beers that come from historical recipes and practices.
Starting with Bishop’s Finger from the oldest brewery in the UK, Shepherd Neame, moving to a mild recipe from 1916 by Elusive and Partizan, Holy Goat make an appearance with their 1897 export stout and finishing with a 200th anniversary oude gueuze from Lindemans. We cover the gambit of the oldest bottled beer, old recipes bought back to life and celebration of traditional beer making techniques.

Spooky season is upon us and you might have some sweets left over. Can you pair them with your favourite beers?
This week we pair some popular Halloween candies with beer to see which is a treat and which is a trick. Close relative to the barley wine is the wheat, oat and rye wine and we sample an example of each. How do the different grains change this beer style? Why would brewers use these alternative grains and which do we like best?

Froze or froze? Or Froz-ah?! If you’re anything like us, you love an interesting beer, and fruited Gose is definitely interesting! Not one for the ‘why doesn’t beer taste like beer’ crowd, the fruited gose can taste anything from a fruit smoothie to a cocktail that needs a little umbrella and a beach.
We look at froze beers from our friends Merakai Brewing Co and Fallen Acorn and compare them to a fruited gose from Goodh Brew Co and a Smoothie Sour from Drekker x F**K Cancer Project.

In our second episode bringing you the people behind the UK Brave Noise beers, we chat to Tom from We Are Beer. In collaboration with Lost & Grounded in Bristol, they have produced a Brave Noise lager as the festival beer for the We Are Beer craft beer festivals.
Not only is this the first UK Brave Noise lager but it also highlights that you don’t need to be a brewery or home brewer to make a Brave Noise! We chat about how people can take part in Brave Noise (it’s easier than you think!) and how We Are Beer are striving to create safe and inclusive festivals for all.

We are making a Brave Noise – both physically and by brewing the beer!
If you haven’t heard about Brave Noise, it is a global collaboration beer started by Brienne Allan. It started as a question:
“Have you ever experienced sexism in the beer industry?”
This opened the flood gates to reports of not just sexism, but racism, homophobia and sexual assault within the beer industry and community. To honour those that have spoken out and to try to have a safer, more inclusive beer industry, the Brave Noise collaboration was born.
To take part breweries must submit their code of conduct and make this publicly available to staff and consumers. They must also commit to doing the long term work of building a more inclusive industry and make a donation to an appropriate charity or non-profit that reflects the mission of the collaboration.
We were honoured to be asked by Merakai Brewing Co to be part of their Brave Noise brew – not only brewing the beer with them but also expressing why the cause is so important to us and helping to choose the non-profit partner to receive funds from the sale of the beer.
We chose The Coven Brewsters Wellness Officer initiative. These with be trained staff that will attend beer events and festivals to help, support and act as witness for attendees.

Happy Birthday to Top Rope – 5 years young! We can honestly say that A Woman’s Brew: The Podcast wouldn’t exist without Top Rope and their Cold Stone Cream Austin range, which we featured in one of our first ever episodes. (we looked at Ice Cream Pale Ales in episode 003, which you can listen to here: https://awomansbrew.sounder.fm/episode/icecreampaleales)
If you don’t know, Top Rope loves wrestling, and their co-founder Neil has some very deep knowledge about the subject. We find out how they come up with their beer names (spoiler – it’s to do with wrestling but often it’s not as obvious as you would think) and how they managed to get Frank Turner to do a gig at the brewery.

We brewed a beer! And our wonderful friend Rachel at Heist Brew Co made it all possible. We were honoured to be asked to brew with Heist and to have the opportunity to develop the beer from recipe creation right through to naming and art work! Together we created a very drinkable peanut butter and jelly porter (using Jo’s base porter recipe!) called When The Beer Is So Lit You Turn Into A Bagel!
We also chat to Rachel about the life of a brewer – congrats Rachel for just getting a full time position on the brew team at Heist. We chat about her journey into brewing, so if you are thinking of this path give us a listen to see how Rachel did it.

Have you heard of a Hopfenweisse? This is a relatively new style in the grand scheme of beer. A combination of the banana esters and clove phenols of a wheat beer and the fruity, bitter notes of hops. Tori and Jo were inspired to produce this episode after they got a can of Nacken by Siren Brew Co. Luckily, they managed to grab the original Hopfenweisse from Schneider Weisse to compare it to.
Jo shares the interesting evolution of this style with you, while Tori tells the tale of how Nacken came to be through Swedish homebrew, naked sea gods and missing wheat!

We’ve finally been able to take the podcast on the road! This week we talk
you through our experiences at Bigfoot Festival in Warwickshire.
Tori went along as a volunteer for Full Circle Brewing Co and Jo brought along her friend Liz who doesn’t drink beer and doesn’t camp! Each of us shares
our unique perspective on how we felt before the festival, what it was like there and our top tips for anyone going to a beer festival in the future. Jo is particularly excited as she managed to find a beer that Liz liked!
We didn’t get to record as much at the event as we wanted to, mainly because we were having too much fun! But be prepared for our Saturday recording session – it was a bit loud!

Back in October, Boutilliers released a green hop version of their core beer Doki Doki – a Helles lager. Whereas the original version is hopped with Polaris and Hallertau, Green Doki was hopped with fresh English Challenger.

We’ve got a very special episode for you today that was specially commissioned by Women on Tap CIC for the 2021 Festival.
Women on Tap were looking for creative commissions for this year’s festival and A Woman’s Brew: The Podcast were honoured to be selected as one of 6 submissions. We want to showcase the wonderful women of Women’s Pint Club – a beer group started in person by Jo but then expanded to include all those online via a Facebook group and Zoom. Throughout the lockdown period these women have found a way to connect, make lasting friendships and support one another in ‘the pub that didn’t exist’ on Zoom. Tori and Jo asked the group about
their differing experiences of the lockdowns, their feelings about the pub and
virtual events and how Women’s Pint Club affected them during the pandemic. We speak to the international members and find out their differing experiences. Finally, a few members who felt comfortable to do so met in person and discussed the difference between the real pub and the virtual, what it means to us and the benefits of both. We want an inclusive society and experience in beer – virtual and in person events can aid this inclusion.
What we want you to take away from this episode is our love for the beer community and the hospitality sector; how it has helped us get through the devastating impact of a global pandemic, but also how we’ve managed to help each other in the process.
The ‘organised chaos’ that is our beer group Women’s Pint Club is here to stay, both in person and virtually. The pub isn’t just four walls, it’s the community that you build.

The day has come! We’ve been telling you about Jo’s homebrew of the mustard beer for a while and in this episode we finally get to taste it! We thought we’d look at other savoury beers while we were at it – we’ve got a Yorkshire pudding pale and a pizza gose for you!
Beer usually goes down the path of sweeter flavours, but there are some great beers that use savoury flavours out there – think herbs, veg, bread, chilli, seafood, even squid ink. It’s worth giving beers with this in a go as brewers can create some really interesting results.
Of course, there is always the thought ‘just because they could, does that mean they should?!’ In this episode we say, maybe!
