In 3 chapters over 3 weeks now, we have witnessed Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah, and Daniel’s response to challenges to their faith and following of God (YHWH) with clarity, integrity, humility, and courage. As they live life faithfully with God in Babylonian captivity, their faith is challenged in different ways. In chapter 3, they are asked to gather together with all the people before a massive statue of gold. And as the music plays, they are commanded to bow down before the statue of gold. How do Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah respond? They stand. And they stand together. What now? King Nebuchadnezzar is furious and stokes up an incinerating fiery furnace. What now? As they stand before the king, they say, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” (Our new Text of the Quarter)Wow. “Our God is able. Whether willing or unwilling, does or does not deliver us, we will not bow down, we will trust in God.” That’s clarity… spoken with integrity… actually filled with humility… and definitely courageous.Question: Is there something in your life where your faith and faithfulness to God is being challenged? Are you able to say, “My God is able. Whether he does or doesn’t act, I put my trust in God and will follow God.”

As we’ve opened the book of Daniel, our prayer is that God will open the book of Daniel to us. Written long ago to God’s people in exile in Babylon, we get a glimpse into God’s working in and through Daniel, Hananiah, Misheal, and Azariah. Already, we’ve seen God at work in chapter 1. Now, in chapter 2 we see God at work once again as the King has a dream about kings and kingdoms and asks his servants to not only interpret the dream for him, but 1st, to tell him what his dream was. Naturally, the servants respond by saying, “Impossible.”Yet Daniel knows God and God is the revealer of mysteries. When asked by King Nebuchadnezzar if he can tell him his dream and interpret it, he says, “I can’t… but there is a God in heaven who can.” After all, God is the author of the impossible.

This Sunday we begin the Book of Daniel. The Book of Daniel is an extraordinary blend of historical narrative (half of the book: 1-6) – highlighting Daniel, Shadrach, Mishach and Abednego’s faithfulness to God… pointedly when their faith was challenged… and the other half (7-12) is mostly prophetic visions – apocalyptic in nature and genre, with two central themes woven throughout the book – the 1st is God’s provision and protection over his faithful followers and 2nd, the showcasing of God’s sovereignty over history, empires, and kingdoms. And guess what, I believe the Son of God, who we know today to be Jesus, makes a special appearance… Can you guess where that might be?

As we hear Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount this Sunday, he is already preparing our hearts through his already opening words at the beginning of his official ministry, “Repent! For the Kingdom of God is near… Come! Follow me.” As the huge crowds are attracted to Jesus, he teaches them his Way, God’s Way, invites us to follow him. When he sees the crowds, Jesus has compassion on them, because they were ‘harassed and helpless… like sheep without a shepherd.” So Jesus reaches out to all people, invites them into his Kingdom, his Spirit rule, an abundant and eternal life filled with purpose and meaning, “Repent! The Kingdom of God is near… Come… believe in me… receive me… follow me.”

Bible teacher D.A Carson says, “Nothing is more important in God’s universe….than knowing Godbetter.” We know the church in Ephesus faced a cluster of problems. There were problems betweenJews and Gentiles. There were concerns about immoral behaviors and troubled marriages. And alarming misunderstandings about spiritual warfare. But Paul’s first prayer is not about any of these things. Instead, he prays that the Ephesians will know God better. Knowing God better….knowing His plans for us, His love for us, and His power for us actually helps us face all the other problems. This is why knowing God is the highest priority of every Christian.

One of my favorite Bible texts is Mark 7:31-37. In this passage, we see Jesus’ excellent caregivingon full display. He explains his intentions to heal the deaf mute through touch language and sign language. His tender love and great power amaze the crowd who exclaim, “He has done everything well!” Such an excellent restoration also gives us a preview of the great future restoration King Jesus will accomplish when He returns in glory.

Sunday we enter into the vision of Ezekiel in chapter 47. In the vision, a man takes Ezekiel to the temple foundation where there is a trickle of water coming out from under it. Going 500 meters downstream, it’s ankle deep. Another 500 meters – knee deep. Another – waist deep. Another – needing to swim, but unable to cross, a strong and mighty river. Along the banks trees are flourishing and growing, producing abundant fruit. The water runs through the desert into the Dead Sea and everywhere the water flows, life grows. The salt water is made fresh. The waters teem with fish. It’s a beautiful picture of flourishing. What is this vision of? One thing for sure, it’s a vision of God’s goodness and transformative power!

Humilitas – humility, poor in spirit, meek, modesty, diffidence, absence of pride and vanity… Jeremiah 9:23-24 says much with very little words. In this way, Jesus calls us to follow him. The one who has ears, let them hear.

Sunday we continue our summer series with a reading, a hearing, and a look at Genesis 1-2. Genesis 1-2 is all about beginnings. It’s God’s revelation to us of his profound, magnificent design and purposefulness of all things. Sure, Genesis 1-2 doesn’t tell us everything about the beginning, but it tells us everything we need to know! Can’t wait to hear this Scripture together. To reflect on its revelation. To share with one another what it is we hear, see, and notice in this greatest of beginnings. I encourage you, between now and Sunday to find a space in your schedule, get to it before everyone else does – a quiet place where there can be little to no interruption and you can read aloud Genesis 1 and pause to listen. Then read Genesis 2 and pause and listen. And respond to God’s word in some way of worship.

Psalm 139 is a moving epic Psalm filled with revelation after revelation of God’s love and intimate knowledge of us. From before we were born, God knew us. He is with us now, everywhere we go, in all that we do – guiding us, comforting us, and working in and through us. And he will always be with us always into the future. This kind of love and knowledge of us from God our Creator leads us to significant trust and dependence, “Lord, search me, know my heart, my anxious thoughts, find any offensive way in me and lead me in your way!” All ours for the asking, the receiving, the loving, the living. Psalm 139, an epic, moving Psalm.

Who do you love? What do you love most dearly? We were created for love – made to love somebody – and everyone is looking for love. Sounds like a song, (because it is) “Can anybody find me somebody to love?”In Psalm 63, the songwriter sings about the love he has found… in God. Yearnings met, soul satisfied, “Because your love is better than life my lips will glorify you… my heart will pursue you… I’ll love you as long as I live!”

Sounds like the songwriter has found somebody to love, because God loves him. Psalm 63. See you Sunday!

Summer message series has begun, as we move from Psalm 1 (last week) to Psalm 19 (this week) – an easy transition! Last week we saw God’s wisdom revealed in the fabric of the creation – from the universe to the human body, in both the natural and moral order. God’s design reveals the wisdom of God in his created designs and plans for the world. One area of wisdom where God’s design and created purposes are revealed, experienced and seen is the blessings and curses that come from our thoughts and behaviors, the pathways of choices and directions of our will. God reveals one thing for sure in Psalm 1: ‘Blessed is the one who delights (rejoices) and meditates (thoughts and actions included) on God’s word and ways. That one is like a tree planted by streams of water… produces fruit, leaves are always green, there is blessing!”What better place to go from here (Psalm 1) than there (Psalm 19). Psalm 19 reveals God’s two great ‘reads’ of revelation: Creation and Scripture. What more does anyone need to read? If you are a part of a summer book reading club – these two are a must!Psalm 19, a beautifully written song of God’s two great books of revelation, leads us to a surprising end: asking for forgiveness and a heart focused on the worship of God.The post Podcast: 2024-06-23: Top 10: Psalm 19 – Two Books – All You Need To Read first appeared on Crestview Church.

As we engage a wrap up message from our Gospel of John series, this Sunday, what should be emphasized? I’d like to explore the question, in John’s Gospel, “What and How does belief in and following Jesus look like?” We will look at the heart of John’s Gospel to find some answers. It has a lot to do with washing feet, loving God and others, faithfulness, obedience, and producing fruit. John 13-17 reveals much of the answer as Jesus focuses on his last hours of discipleship with his disciples. And we get to listen in!The post Podcast: 2024-06-09: Gospel of John: The Abiding Way: Life in the Holy Spirit first appeared on Crestview Church.

In John 13, Jesus shows the disciples ‘the full extent of his love.’ How? By getting up from his place of honor as Master, Teacher, and Lord, taking off his outer garment, wrapping a towel around his waist, and washing and drying each of the disciples feet. As Master, Teacher, and Lord, he takes on the form of a servant. When he finished he asks a probing question, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” Then he gives them a life-changing call, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” Followed by a powerful promise, “Now that you know this, you will be blessed if you do this.”The post Podcast: 2024-06-02: Gospel of John: The Washing Feet Way: Humility and Self-forgetfulness first appeared on Crestview Church.

Sunday we look at a powerful living illustration of the wedding of Grace and Truth – that is Jesus! Some teachers of the law bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, stones in hand, ready to stone her to death, seeking Jesus approval while at the same time desiring to trap him and discredit him before the crowd gathered there. Jesus is masterful in his words and actions. With two simple phrases, he dismantles their self-righteous and judgmental attitudes and disarms the stones from their grasp. So much to explore, questions abound, mystery of truth and grace wedded together in this story affirming Jesus as ‘the way, the truth, and the life.’ In the story Jesus essentially is saying, “I am the forgiveness of sins… and the offer of a transformed life of walking in holiness.’ The post Podcast: 2024-05-26: Gospel of John: The Grace Way: To caste or not caste… stones?! first appeared on Crestview Church.

Sunday is a moving day: we move from the seven ‘I am’s’ of Jesus in the Gospel of John to three final messages to sum it all up – the Grace, Washing Feet, and Abiding Way of Jesus. In John 14:1-17a Jesus proclaims, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. I call them by name and lead them out… they will come in and go out and find pasture.”When I hear these words, I remember Psalm 23, ” The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing. I loved ‘show and tell’ in grade school. When it was your day to ‘show and tell’ it was an opportunity to bring to class your most favorite thing, talk (tell) about it, then reveal it (show). It was always exciting to hear and see what others would bring.Jesus brings to the world and to us the greatest and most profound show and tell the world has ever known: God’s love. He talks about it, “God loves the world and you so much that he sent me, to save you, bringing abundant and eternal life.”And then Jesus shows the world and us God’s love. He washes the disciples’ feet and says, “Do the same.” He says, “Love your enemies” saying, “Father forgive them for they know now what they do” and then dies on cross for others, teaching all the while, “Lay down your life for others.”Then Jesus rises again, appearing to the disciples, “See my hands, my feet, my side?!” And they are reminded again of God’s love, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Jesus is the greatest ‘show and tell’ the world has ever known, both telling and showing God’s love. The post Podcast: 2024-04-21: Gospel of John: Who is Jesus? It’s been a wonderful week of light. Spring is coming and the warmth is noticeable, giving light to our world. A rare event of eclipse happened across the United States and our world. People flocked to this event, looking to the sun to see this wonder.Jesus says in John 8:12, “I AM the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will see the light of life.” That sounds important and wonderful. Today is Palm Sunday, beginning a roller coaster ride for Jesus and the disciples – bewildering, tragic, and wonderful, all in just seven days. We begin our journey in John chapter 12. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus washes Jesus’ feet with an extravagant, expensive, pure nard mingled with tears. This is an important beginning to this passionate week. Mary’s emotion of devotion and love for Jesus, having raised her brother Lazarus from the dead, is flowing like a mighty river. Are her tears of joy or of sorrow? Jesus has been saying with regularity now that he will be leaving them soon. That he must die and rise 3 days later.

In 4 weeks, we have seen, heard, and witnessed eyewitness accounts, through the testimony of the disciple John, Jesus’ authority over illness, disease, disability, nature, the demonic, sin, death, and hell. What does this mean? Does it stimulate faith in Jesus? And if it does, what does Jesus’ authority over these things have to do with our everyday lives? It begs the question – What authority is our life under? If it’s Jesus’ authority, how does that look? If you believe that Jesus has authority over these things, and you believe in Jesus, how does it manifest in our everyday lives? The post Podcast: 2024-03-10: Gospel of John: Authority and Testimonies (Believe ‘into’ Jesus) first appeared on Crestview Church.

This Sunday is week 4 of 4 on Jesus’ demonstration of authority beyond any doubt that he is the Messiah. Yet, Jesus surprises his followers, including his disciples, by his authority over sin, death, and hell. We have already heard Jesus speak words to others, “Your sins are forgiven.” This causes quite a stir. Who has that kind of authority? (Jesus) And then in chapter 11 of John, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead! Hmmm… who has authority to do that? (Jesus) And it would seem, that by way of his commanding of demons combined with his raising the dead and forgiving sins that Jesus has authority over hell… That’s a yes. Certainly, we will see this to be true after his death and resurrection, yet, he is demonstrating it during his ministry. The post Podcast: 2024-03-03: Gospel of John: Authority – Death to Life (Believe ‘into’ Jesus) first appeared on Crestview Church.
