By incorporating Hawaiian wisdom, personal experiences, and practical tips, this episode helps listeners cultivate Aloha and empower others to stand taller and be Kū.
In episode 98, Daniel begins with a Hawaiian proverb: "Nana ka maka, ho’olohe ka pepeiao, pa’a ka waha," which translates to "Observe with the eyes, listen with the ears, don’t talk. This is how one learns best." He highlights how listening has become a lost art in a world full of noise and distractions. Genuine understanding starts with being present and truly hearing others, allowing us to see the world through different perspectives.
Daniel discusses how developing a sense of Aloha not only strengthens individuals but also fosters connections and bridges gaps between diverse perspectives. He emphasizes the importance of slowing down, actively listening, and creating space for Aloha to flourish. By asking meaningful questions and engaging in dialogue, we can demonstrate a genuine interest in others' experiences and foster mutual understanding.
The episode also explores practical ways to practice Aloha, even in situations where we may disagree with others. Daniel shares tips such as active listening, suspending judgment, seeking understanding, perspective-taking, validating feelings, finding common ground, and responding with kindness and respect. It is emphasized that practicing Aloha does not require compromising personal beliefs but instead focuses on fostering understanding and respectful communication.
Throughout the episode, Daniel emphasizes the impact of Aloha on confidence and personal growth. By acknowledging and validating someone's feelings, individuals feel understood and valued, boosting their confidence and encouraging self-reflection. Aloha also creates a safe space for open communication, strengthening bonds and motivating individuals to embrace challenges and pursue personal growth.
As the episode concludes, Daniel inspires listeners to foster empathy and create environments where people can stand taller and live Kū. By showing Aloha, recognizing strengths, and offering support and encouragement, individuals can feel more confident in themselves and their potential for growth.

Welcome to Episode 97 of The KU Project Podcast with Daniel Aipa. In this episode, we delve into the crucial topic of balancing self-care and caring for others. Prepare yourself for an enlightening discussion that will empower you to take care of your well-being while remaining compassionate towards those around you.
Amidst a world that constantly emphasizes the values of kindness, compassion, and empathy, it's easy to overlook the person who should be our first priority—ourselves. In this thought-provoking episode, we explore the idea that self-care is not selfish; instead, it is a necessity. By investing time and effort in our own well-being, we become better equipped to care for others. After all, it's challenging to pour from an empty cup.
Aipa explores the concept of self-care, emphasizing that it doesn't have to be extravagant or time-consuming. It can be as simple as dedicating a few minutes each day to activities that bring us joy and rejuvenate our spirits. By engaging in small acts of self-care, we can make a significant difference in our lives and those we care about.
In this episode, you will discover the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say "no" when necessary. Prioritizing your mental and emotional well-being is not a sign of weakness or selfishness but rather an act of self-preservation. Additionally, the episode highlights the significance of taking care of your physical health, as neglecting it can hinder your ability to care for others effectively.
Throughout the discussion, Aipastresses the importance of self-compassion and embracing imperfections. By being kind to ourselves, and treating ourselves with the same love and care we extend to others, we cultivate a healthier mindset and foster better relationships.
Join us in this inspiring episode of The KU Project Podcast as we learn how to find harmony between self-care and caring for others. Discover the power of prioritizing your well-being, understanding that it is an act of love both for yourself and for the people around you.

Recently came across the topic of reversing diabetes on Good Morning America, I was disappointed by it because it touched upon the same things that everyone knows about exercise and nutrition being important. What made it worse for me was the fact that they shared a study of a group going through a program with a personal trainer and following a healthy diet. Everyone received great results and improvements, but after the program ended found that majority of the participants were right back to where they started. That just made me want to share some insights on this problem not from a diabetes standpoint but from a fitness professional who is tired of organizations and the fitness industry not focusing on the MAIN PROBLEM!!!
Daniel Aipa shares an olelo no'eau or Hawaiin Proverb that speaks about Canoe fillers who one must be aware not to become one or surround yourself with them. Aipa dives into the 3 Mechanisms for Hypertrophy, or building muscle. How can I build muscle? Is a common question that Aipa comes across and in this episode, he tries to simplify what it takes to build muscle, how to go about it, and offers several examples

Daniel Aipa sits down with Head Performance Coach Kela Marciel to talk about building strong relationships between a coach and athlete and living stronger.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Mark Twain
In life we come across obstacles, ideas, or visions that we think are beyond our abilities. Maybe you are at a time in your life where you feel that your calling in life is more than you can actually handle. It can be scary but Christopher Reeves said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”
Today I want to share with you a hawaiian legend about a young brother and sister from Kahakulaoa, Maui, which is also a song called Opae E written by Pilahi Paki and played by Irmgard Aluli
You have all the strength and confidence you need, but you must find ways to bring it out. Thatʻs what I am here for, thatʻs what The Ku Project is for. Itʻs to help make strength contagious.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.”
― Joseph Campbell
Joseph Campbell coined the term, “Follow your bliss.”
So what is bliss? Why is it so important to find your bliss?
The simple connection for finding bliss is to find true happiness. You get a deep satisfaction of knowing you found meaning and value in life. When you find your bliss, you get to live a strong and Ku life. You become that symbol of strength and your mana becomes contagious. You make strength contagious.
Now, Why is it so important to find your bliss? Because bliss is the pathway to happiness.
You bliss gives you a sense of purpose, belonging, and self-awareness. But just knowing your bliss isn’t enough.
For me, some of the activities that bring me bliss are training my body, writing, and being creative through design. You know you are in your bliss when time seems to not exist because you are so immersed an this activity that brings you bliss. But you have to take action.
First how do you find your bliss? Some people know right away, some of us have to spend time searching within ourselves.
It could be a dream that we had since childhood, a burning desire or calling. It’s something that may scare you, in my past interview with Ku Athlete, Kamaehu Naipo he said, “If you are looking at something that scares you, but you know it’ll be good for you – jump right in.”
That’s why it’s important to build a ku body because it gives us courage to follow our bliss. You need courage, because there is danger in knowing your bliss, and of knowing what truly makes you happy. But the real danger is not following your bliss.
Mark Twain said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.”
Finding your bliss is a journey and building a Ku body helps you along the way. It’s the journey, not the destination
What can help you find your bliss is to find your sacred place or what Hawaiians call - our wahi pana.
Joseph Campbell calls this the need for a “bliss station” - we see it as a need to create or reconnect with our wahi pana.
Campbell said, “[Sacred space] is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first you may find that nothing happens there. But if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen.”
Remember its about the journey. Its about building a ku body to live a ku life, but you can’t sit there thinking about things. you have to take action.
As James Allen wrote, “Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.”
If you are not happy with where you are today, then it is your kuleana to take action to find you bliss and be courageous enough to go for it.
Mahalo for listening in to Single Tasking on this Aloha Friday, where we focus on one thing and one thing only to end the week strong and kick the weekend off stronger.
I would love to hear what you thought about this episode and if it empowered to take a stand, to be ku and follow your bliss. You can reach out to me on twitter @thekuproject.
And if you enjoyed this episode and you believe it brought strength to you, then please share this with your friends and ohana and help make strength contagious.
Until next time, that’s pau ka papa, aloha, and a hui hou. Keep it Ku and make strength contagious.
In this episode I sit down with Kamaehu Naipo who is a project engineer, lua, the Ancient Hawaiian Martial Arts, practitioner, musician, and athlete of The Kū Project. If you’ve been following The Ku Project on social media, particularly Instagram, you may have seen some images and videos of Kama tossing weight around, he’s a pretty big braddah.
Kama said, "If you are looking at something that scares you, but you know it'll be good for you - jump right in.”
And that seemed to be the underlying theme in our conversation. Kama talks about the importance of strengthening yourself first with the aim of helping your family and community and how he overcome his own inferiority complex of being Native Hawaiian and a big guy.
We dive into his experience of joining Pa Kui a Holo and how it changed his approach to life, along with his experience of learning how to make pa’i’ai out of kalo. The biggest take away from our conversation is that Kama understands the meaning of becoming that symbol of strength and that it’s a conintuous effort and process in doing so.
I hope you guys enjoy this interview with Kamaehu Naipo and what it means to be Ku.
For this Single Tasking Friday, Aipa shares thoughts how finding ways to strengthen your character by creating an environment that allows you to succeed. He shares the teachings of great coaches and thinkers like Vince Lombard, John Wooden, and Buckminster Fuller.
He shares how the environment you surround yourself in is a direct correlation to how you live your life. If you aren't happy with where you are in your life and expect more, you must change your circumstances and strengthen your character.
James Allen said, "Circumstances do not make the man, they reveal him."
“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” - Sean Fitzpatrick, Former All Blacks Captain
I stood on an open grassy field in nuuanu valley along with other students during a course in lua, The ancient Hawaiian martial art. No one was there except for our olohe and a few members of the group.
We were learning a haʻa where we transformed ourselves and took on the characteristics of Kamapuaʻa, the boar demigod. Over and over, we practiced, pounding our chests, hitting are arms, stomping the ground. Over and over, but still our olohe and the rest of senior members were not satisfied.
As we stood in the middle of that field dripping in sweat and feeling the lingering sting on our bodies, one of the leaders walked up to us and told, “Look forward, what do you see?”
I looked forward and saw the same group of guys who were telling me that what we were doing wasn’t good enough and I was beginning to get frustrated.
The leader continued, “In front of you are your ancestors who have led you to be here today. The ones who have paved the way for you to be the man you are today. And it is your kuleana to uphold their name and our culture.”
He mentioned that we were not looking for their approval, but instead we were looking for the approval of our ancestors.
We were showing them who we are and wanted to make them feel proud for what they did for us and the legacy they left behind.
I began to think of all the people who have passed onto the other side that had made an impact on me and I felt my heart start to race.
Then another leader came out, “Not only are they in front of you, but they are behind you. They are even right next to you. So when you perform this ha’a, they are right there with you.”
Finally, the olohe called out, “Do it again.”
One of the senior members commanded, “E tu!” and we did the ha’a telling our ancestors who were there that we will not let them down.
Philosopher, Albert Schweitzer said, “Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it’s is the only thing.”
In the 1940s and 50s, polio reached epidemic proportions and became a haunting worry for every parent. It paralyzed over 500,000 people around the world every year. People reacted saw it as a plague.
Then on April 12, 1955, Jonas salk announced the Salk Vaccine which combatted polio and was considered a miracle. He became one of the most celebrated man in America and refused to patent his new vaccine. Instead, he donated it to the human race instead and used his fame as a platform to argue that it was time for the human race needed to change, and it was “our responsibility to find solutions to the key issues facing the human race”.
In his book, Survival of the Wisest, he wrote, “What is my job on the planet? What is it that needs doing, that I know something about, that probably won’t happen unless I take responsibility for it?’
The way we live our life has a direct impact on the lives of others, especially our loved ones and our community.
It starts with character and the commitment to our life’s purpose.
Muhammad Ali said, “Service to others, is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
Sometimes you may be unsure of your purpose or what to do with your time in this world. This doesn’t mean you have to go out and change the world. No. Although it possible.
But in order to become a good ancestor, you must strengthen yourself by building a strong body and a sound mind. Your actions today will echo beyond your time.
An Old Greek Proverb tells us, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they will never see.”
We are the caretaker of our own lineage. Our biggest responsibility is to honor those who came before us and those who will come after. To leave Hawaii a stronger place.
It’s starts with you. What are you doing today to make yourself a good ancestor? What happens with your character when you are placed under pressure? What sort of example are you to those you influence?
Part of building a Ku body and living a Ku life, is building up the strength to answer life’s most deepest questions and putting those answers into action.
I've been enjoying sitting down the my athletes and students to hear their stories. Kū Athlete and Student, Landen Paikai, shared with me his empowering story of taking a step into the unknown and out of his comfort zone.
His journey of building Kū body and living a Kū life will inspire you to embark on your own journey. Landen has been with The Kū Project for close to 2 years and he symbolizes the epitome of patience, consistency, and enjoying the process.
I learned a lot from Landen about answering your calling and taking action, finding balance, that your voice matters, and what it means to leave behind a positive legacy.
I'm stoked to share his story in episode 42.
I believe strength in contagious. Some of us may feel like we don't matter very much or what we do in life isn't very important. I was never the confident type that wanted to put myself out there and share my thoughts and stories. But I knew I wanted to help others and make a difference. This is when I realized that I had to strengthen myself and approach obstacles and overcome my fears. Doing so, I was able to break down barriers and limitations I placed on myself. In this Single Tasking Friday Episode 41, I want to empower you to take responsibility and be that symbol of strength and inspires and empower, to ultimately be Ku. This weekend I'm inviting you to make strength contagious by focusing on yourself.

Daniel Aipa sits down with Ryan Moody, 9-Time World Record Holder and owner of The XWOD, and shares his story of overcoming a huge injury setback into becoming a world renowned coach who travels around the world coaching athletes and giving seminars on explosiveness and mental focus.
We talk about Crossift, misinformation in the fitness industry, Louie Simmons and Westside Barbell, becoming explosive, and always striving to push the envelope of your human potential.
Are you mindful of your actions and behaviors every day? The more mana you have the more influence you have on others.
When you are given mana you have the decision to use it for good or bad. Do you practice what your preach? Mana is a powerful tool that you must know how to access and use. You should also check your account on a daily basis to hold yourself accountable for your actions and behavior.
If you actions and behaviors go against what you want to stand for, then your mana goes down.
But that's okay. There will be setbacks, but it's what you do after those setbacks to rebuild your mana that makes your all the more influential.
Build up your mana to be Kū.
Aggression is bad. Controlled aggression is good. Aipa shares the importance of embracing your aggression and learning on how to direct the aggression into positive outlets instead of negative ones.

I was stoked to talk stories with Keʻōpū Reelitz, former editor of Mana Magazine, Paʻi Award winning writer, someone who participated in a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and continues to take a lead in the Hawaiian community.
I've spent a lot of time reaching out the the movers and shakers, thinkers, and difference maker in Hawaii to have them share their stories of becoming stronger and how they embody our philosophy of building a Kū body and living a Kū life to empower others.
Keʻōpū shared a personal recollections of overcoming challenges from the loss of her father, coping with depression, and keeping Hawaii as the Hawaii she grew up with for future generations. Keʻōpū has great advice for all of us for when we come to those moments where we begin to question ourselves or feel like the world around you is spiraling down.
She empowers you to become stronger, and to ultimately be Kū.

This single tasking friday, we dive into what it means to overcome the feeling of being shame of who you are when others try to make you feel unworthy.
In Hawaii there is a tug-of-war between who's more Hawaiian and what it means to be Hawaiian. If you find yourself being shame of being lesser Hawaiian, the person who is doing the shaming is unsure of who they are.
Be You. Be Kū. Continue to accentuate your strengths because that will only make the world you live in even stronger.
On this Single-Tasking Friday, we focus on Why we Emphasize on building a stronger body, or what we call a Kū body.
But instead of looking at what exercise can help prevent, focus on what exercise can actually help build up. Those who make fitness as a part of who they are and not some burden they feel like that HAVE to do, they sleep better, able to burn more fat, increase their confidence and mood, energy levels increase, and they even enhance their sex drive among other things.
Approach fitness and strength with those things in mind and you'll be able to build the strongest version of yourself.

Today we focus on doing more of what you are afraid. Aipa gives a self-experiment for you to try to overcome a fear or feeling of disconnection and loneliness.
He talks about the importance of embracing your fears and overcoming them. You never really get rid of your fears you just get better and overcoming them.
When you can gain control of your nutrition, you can gain control of your life. Many of us find ourselves wanting to eat healthier but let's be honest, it takes a lot of time in shopping, preparing, and cleaning. A lot.
So when I came across a local business in Kailua, my hometown, who makes eating healthier convenient and tastes amazing I had to hear the story.
The owner and founder of Good Clean Food Hawaii (GCF Hawaii), Janelle Bremer, is helping Hawaii become healthier and stronger by bringing healthy meals straight to you.
Janelle taught me that when you feel passionate about doing something, go for it and do it. You will get criticism and you won't be able to make everyone happy, but that's okay. You still have people behind who believe in you and that's what matters most.
It was awesome sitting down with Janelle and learning about the story behind her success and her approach to living out her passion.

We talk about the 4 Pillars of success that must be in place before you start your way on any goal. The 4 Pillars to Success are:
Purpose and Intention
Accountability
Support System
Deadline
If you have these pillars in place, then you are setting yourself up for success.
John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur on Fire has a great Acronym for FOCUS which is, Follow One Course Until Success. When it comes to becoming the strongest version of yourself, you must FOCUS because strength is contagious. The stronger you become, you empower others around you to be stronger.

This week I wrote an article about the Rise of the Kanaka, how The Hero's Journey can help you live Kū. I thought it would be a great topic for this Single Tasking Aloha Friday.
If you have been listening through some of the past podcast shows, you've probably heard me mention the Hero's Journey and Joseph Campbell. Today's show, I wanted to share a story of one of the legends of Hawaii's hero, Maui, and how you can look at your own life as a hero's journey.
Once you can understand that all heroes have the same journey but take a different path, you can your own life and see where you are within your own journey.

It seems that everything you want to do has to follow a specific plan. But what if your plan doesn't work out the way you thought. Experts rely on their experience to provide a plan for others to follow in order to achieve a specific result. But the emphasis isn't on the plan.
The emphasis should be focusing on the necessary habits one must change. By creating new habits that are in line with your goals, you create a life transforming shift that will bring you closer towards achieving your hopes and dreams.

You ever felt like things were going all over the place and that you couldn't get a hold of your life? As if everything around you was going wrong or not exactly how you wanted. Then there are times when your to-do list is piled up, you become overwhelmed, don't know where to start, and your day is totally wasted because you feel like you didn't do anything.
I wrote about this topic in my book, Aloha to You, and it's definitely something we can all benefit from practicing.

On this Single Tasking Aloha Friday, Aipa shares his thoughts on the importance of surrounding yourself with strength. He touches upon how listening to podcasts such as, Jason Ferruggia, Pat Flynn, Tim Ferris, John Lee Dumas, and others empower him to become stronger.
"Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don't see it yourself." - Edmund Lee
"You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn
When you are looking for a little strength to get you over a challenge, an obstacle, or even if you need some help (we all could use a little help), you need to surround yourself with strength even it means you have to get out of your comfort zone.
If you are looking for more strength in your life, the first place to look is the people who you spend the most time around. If they are negative, bring you down instead of lift you up, and influence bad habits and bad behaviors, you need to re-assess what you want out of your life and think about letting go.
This is hard to do, but you will only become stronger.
