Combating the Effects of Racism with Intentional Breathing and Mindfulness with Zee Clarke

Hearing Zee Clarke share her life experiences and day-to-day encounters with racism was astonishing. The unfortunate truth is that for racism and any forms of prejudice to be eradicated, it is crucial that every single individual acknowledges its existence and actively works towards its alleviation. Laws alone cannot end injustice; the underlying causes must also be addressed because, as Clarke also expressed, individuals who commit such acts are often deeply traumatized and follow a false narrative that leads to these acts.

Awareness is critical. Black People Breath: A Mindfulness Guide to Racial Healing is an essential book for people of color and their allies alike, as it raises awareness about the importance of combatting prejudice. It also stresses the significance of returning to one's breath when confronted with stressful situations. Zee Clarke’s book releases March 14th, 2023, and can be found at your local Barnes & Noble, on Amazon, or any book retailer.

About Zee: Mindfulness | Breathwork | Racial Healing

Zee Clarke is a Harvard MBA that went from leading teams at Fortune 500 companies and startups in Silicon Valley to teaching mindfulness and breathwork to people of color. Why? After experiencing a number of race-related challenges, from racial profiling and harassment by the police to microaggressions in the workplace, she realized that mindfulness and breathwork were much more powerful outside of the yoga studio and in the context of our everyday lives. Trained in India, Zee leverages her toolkit of yoga, meditation, breathwork, sound healing, and Reiki to ensure that all people of color have the tools to thrive despite any challenges that race, gender, or sexuality might present.

Really Care for Them: Selling with Emotional Intelligence with Mareo McCracken

In this episode, Mareo discusses how salespeople can be more successful by caring for their customers and argues that salespeople often focus too much on themselves and their own goals and how that self-serving mindset can be detrimental to the sales process. Mareo suggests that salespeople should focus on providing value and care to their customers. This approach, he argues, will lead to more satisfied customers and, ultimately, more sales.

About Mareo McCracken:
Mareo is the Chief Revenue Officer at Movemedical, where he guides the sales, marketing, and customer success efforts. Prior to helping head his Med Tech SaaS company, Mareo was the top-performing salesperson at multiple companies in various industries.

Outside of family, reading, food, travel, and sports--driving organizational and individual growth are his passions. He loves finding meaning at the intersection of revenue, organizational health, and individual performance. Originally from Boise, Idaho, and having lived in London, Hong Kong, Yuma, New York, Scottsdale, Houston, and Provo, McCracken now resides with his wife and children in San Diego.

Understanding and Managing Your Energy with Allie Pratt

As Albert Einstein once said, “Everything is energy, and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want, and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.”

So if you are a skeptic of anything "woo woo," remember the world of Einstein. "This is NOT philosophy. This IS physics," because in this episode, Allie and I will dive deep into energy healing and the power of creating through our energy.

Allie Pratt spent several years in corporate "living the life" by modern standards. She was moving up in leadership and making the big bucks ($$$), but she was unhappy. It dawned on her that checking the boxes of what success and happiness "should" look like did not lead to happiness and fulfillment.

Now, Allie is living her best life and found her purpose as an energy healer and ashtanga yoga instructor, coaching, training, and consulting entrepreneurs and organizations on how to tap into their energy and potential.

The Power of Storytelling with Attorney and Gallery Owner, Sonya Pfeiffer

In this episode, Sonya and I discuss the trough-line of her many diverse careers—storytelling. Stories are a powerful catalyst for change. They can shift attitudes, influence action, and breed truth and love just as much as they can misinformation and hate.

Per usual, I go down many different rabbit holes, as Sonya and I discuss:
- A reporter's responsibility to provide unbiased news
- How fear alters narratives and drives agendas
- The state of the U.S.'s political divide
- How we view criminals
- How art can be a gentle catalyst in creating dialogue around challenging conversations.

About Sonya Pfeiffer:
Sonya spent many years as an investigative reporter covering stories internationally and across the U.S. While still reporting, Sonya attended law school at Chapel Hill. Today, Sonya is a criminal defense attorney and civil rights lawyer specializing in wrongful conviction litigation. And owns and directs the Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art, a fine arts gallery in Charlotte North Carolina.

How Relationship Issues Parallel Work Place Challenges with Rabbi Shlomo and Rivka Slatkin

Join EIM+'s guest hosts Rabbi Shlomo Slatkin and his wife, Rivka Slatkin as they share three issues that plague both marriages and relationships at work.

About your guest hosts:

Bio: Shlomo and Rivka Slatkin founded The Marriage Restoration Project as a global initiative to keep couples together and happy. After working with high-conflict couples for over a decade in his marriage counseling practice, The Marriage Restoration Project, Rabbi Shlomo Slatkin, M.S., LCPC discovered that the same process he uses with couples is exactly what companies need to do to sort out their workplace and communication differences.

When Shlomo and Rivka experienced their own relationship problems, they were pointed in the direction of Imago therapy. After their first session of Imago therapy, they immediately felt like they were in love again. That was due to Imago therapy's focus on restoring marriages through building and enhancing the connection that exists between the couple (no matter how hidden it is!), not by getting involved in mediation or negotiating.

Shlomo then became a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. He is the author of several books, including The Five-Step Action Plan to a Happy & Healthy Marriage. Together with Rivka, they founded http://www.TheMarriageRestorationProject.com, a global initiative to help keep couples together and happy. To learn how to have a happy and healthy relationship, click here to find out about our 2 day Private Marriage Retreat, or visit http://www.themarriagerestorationproject.com/marriage-intensives. Companies can also benefit from effective communication and emotional intelligence training through workshops, retreats, courses, and consulting with the Slatkins.

Every other Wednesday on Parenting with Emotional Intelligence, I will provide you with practical strategies and insight on how to parent with emotional intelligence and its benefits to you, your family, and the success and well-being of your child.

Today, we're going to expand our awareness by discussing the two parts that create who we are; the ego and the true self. When we realize that the ego is the source of all our emotional suffering and that it runs the lives of 99% of us, we can learn to shift the focus to our true self—the essence of our being which is content and fulfilled.

First, we need to understand how to identify when the ego is calling the shots.
- All unpleasant emotions are a product of the ego
- Some pleasant emotions are a product of the ego too. We'll discuss how to tell the difference.

The ego wants and is never satisfied.
The true self is content, accepting, and longs for nothing.

Today, on Parenting with Emotional Intelligence, we'll continue to talk about the power that of developing our awareness. Specifically, how to become aware and address how we often dismiss the fact that our feelings and triggers are a product of our internal environment as apposed to our external environment.

This is a difficult concept to grasp because we've been raised to believe that our external environment influences us internally whereas it's our internal environment that gives meaning to our external environment—EMOTIONALLY.

To try and avoid confusion, I am solely speaking of our feelings here. There will always be an exchange of influence from the outside in, and the inside out. Please feel free to reach out with questions or need for clarification. This is a confusing and deep topic.

Episode 92 is PART 2 of the interview with Karena de Souza

In this segment we will continue our conversation to focus on the Future of Work and the role emotional intelligence plays in our decision making for ourselves as well as our children.

As a strategist, futurist and parent, Karena is constantly watching for trends that can impact us.

In 2015 she noticed a significant shift in the way technologies were entering the workspace and changing the way we work and live. COVID-19 has accelerated some of the adjustments we would have made by 2030.

Karena discusses how we survive and thrive in this new environment – focusing on the questions raised by Generation Z, the workers and leaders of 2050.

Karena brings a rich and complex diversity to her conversations. She has lived on four continents; was a refugee as a child and an immigrant as an adult. She discovered her interest in strategy & futurism in her long career as VP-IT & Communications Officer at Morgan Stanley before moving to Canada where she added Small Business and Entrepreneurial experience.

Her empowering book ‘Contours of Courageous Parenting – Can we tilt towards better decisions?’ was written for parents just like her, struggling to equip their children with decision-making frameworks robust enough to survive unforeseeable futures such as a pandemic.

Her primary area of focus is helping GenZ understand and successfully move into the new and evolving Nature of Work.

Episode 86: Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Awareness Quotient with Brian Cunningham

In this episode, I will be discussing the power of awareness in life and leadership with my friend and mentor, Brian Cunningham.

Brian is a student of leadership and life. Starting out as a Parking Lot Attendant at a large hospital in Philadelphia, he has worked through every level within this complex industry, eventually working his way to serve in the role of CEO. Throughout this journey he purposefully studied the leadership/followership dynamic to understand both the illusions and deeper realities of leadership service.

At a point on this journey, while immersed in seeking a more integrated approach to leadership service, the full developmental progression of our growth as a leader began to “emerge” to Brian… who then organized these findings into a unique and practical framework that others can use to develop their own expression of leadership mastery.

The AQ Model of leadership development is detailed in his book, The Leadership Revolution: Because Evolution Takes Too Long. While the fundamentals of our AQ (Awareness Quotient) are illuminated in his groundbreaking book, Our AQ (Awareness Quotient): The Missing Link to Extraordinary Leadership and Life.

As an active Leader in today’s complex healthcare environment, Brian understands the real challenges and the amazing opportunities that these complexities present to us, and he is here to share his practical approach to taking our leadership service to the highest levels.

Mondays: Mindful Mentions - where I will highlight a person, book, organization, or topic that is top of mind for me that week, and one that I believing is worth sharing.

Today, I will announce changes that are being made to the podcast. Until further notice, daily podcast will become weekly, with a continuation of Parenting with Emotional Intelligence (every other Wednesday), and the traditional interview format that will continue to be released every other Monday.

The reasons for this change are that I am in the process of writing my second book, and planning my first annual conference for 2022 (if all goes as planned).

Additionally, I will share with a recent experience that was life altering. However, you'll have to listen if you want to learn more. :)

Sundays Quote of the Week - start your week of with an insightful or inspiration quote to chew on.

Today's quote is from Oliver Gaspirtz, "Our words are often only vague, inadequate descriptions of our thoughts. Something gets lost in translation every time we try to express our thoughts in words. And when the other person hears our words, something gets lost in translation again, because words mean different things to different people.“

Sundays Quote of the Week - start your week of with an insightful or inspiration quote to chew on.

Today's quote is from Lydia Maria Child, from The Mother’s Book: “In politeness, as in many other things connected with the formation of character, people in general begin outside, when they should begin inside; instead of beginning with the heart, and trusting that to form the manners, they begin with the manners, and trust the heart to change influences. The golden rule contains the very life and soul of politeness.”

Mondays: Mindful Mentions - where I will highlight a person, book, organization, or topic that is top of mind for me that week, and one that I believing is worth sharing.

Today, I want to share with you a phenomenal organization in the EQ space, called Six Seconds. When I first began my EQ journey, I went to the google to find additional resources, and stumbled across Six Seconds. While there're other websites out there focused on emotional intelligence, the majority of them give you a brief overview emotional intelligence, a brief list of benefits of emotional intelligence, and then offer you an EQ assessment or some type of training or certification. And that isn't all that helpful for those of us looking to take a deeper dive and find additional resources or support around the subject. What I found different and intriguing about Six Seconds was the depth and array of information and resources that they offered around emotional intelligence. Six Seconds offers cases studies, articles, trainings, workshops, conferences, networking events, and physical tools and resources for all ages and stages of life.

Episode 31 of Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Intention and Introspection with Confidence Coach Grace Johnston

Grace starts off with an interesting story of how she recently made the decision to change ALL THREE of her names. She shares the meaning and intention behind this decision after a couple of years into her self-develop journey. Throughout the conversation, we continue to dive deeper into the insight that comes from introspection, and the power behind our intentions.

Grace's personal bio:
"I am a confidence coach who lives in Charlotte, NC with my amazing husband, my pit bull Stella, and our two cats. I've been an entrepreneur for over 7 years now, and I've pivoted my business several times to create more flow and alignment in my life and business. I'm into yoga, Pilates, hiking, entertaining, and personal growth all day, every day!

I was raised with emotionally unavailable parents, which led me to become highly sensitive and empathetic, but also a tough love, "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" kind of person. Coming from a low-income background and growing up as a foreigner were two things that perpetually made me feel like an underdog... until I discovered the super power within the struggle. Owning my truth has allowed me to discover limitless power and possibility, and I live to awaken this same power in others!"

Episode 18 of Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Dr. Marc Brackett

This episode has been about 7-months in the making. While Marc accepted my invitation to come on the show during our first chat it was still a process to get on his calendar.

Marc, founding Director of Yale's Center for Emotional Intelligence, has been in high demand since Brené Brown endorsed his book Permission to Feel and had him on her podcast. It is an honor to have him as a guest on the show.

Marc and I talk about the emotionally toxic climate we are in today—just one day after the raid on the US Capital, the significant importance of emotional intelligence, his book Permission to Feel, and RULER a tool created to facilitate and aid in social-emotional learning.

Episode 17 of Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Blood, Sweat and Fears with Dr. Kathryn Guylay

This has to be one of the most interesting interviews I have done on this show? Why? Because we talked about the relationship between blood and emotional intelligence. Yes, very interesting. And an area which I felt completely out of my element.

However, Dr. K (as I call her), did not fail to provide insight and value to the conversation. While blood and EQ were mentioned, the primary topic of conversation was fear, with some splash of insight on nutrition as well.

Personally, I don't feel I brought out the best in this episode. That being said, if you enjoy listening to Dr. K, I highly recommend you check out HER podcast: Positive on Publishing. In addition, check out the links below:

Episode 5 Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Guest: Jennifer Beightley

Jennifer Beightley is a pilates instructor and integrative health coach, who focuses primarily on back pain with her clients.
However, what intrigued me about Jennifer was her mindset. I first "met" Jennifer while watching her on Facebook Live. North Carolina had just entered phase 2 of the reopen process and the Governor chose not to incorporate gyms and fitness centers (which initially were set for phase 2). While many people were upset (understandably), Jennifer, a fitness instructor who was also directly impacted, was not...
