We'd like to thank all our listeners, guests, and those of you who supported either financially or by sharing episodes of Mainstreet with your friends. Most of all, thank you for listening! Steve and I have enjoyed our conversations with the people of Harford County ... and beyond. What began, essentially, as a way to occupy ourselves during the early days of the pandemic gradually became a regular part of our lives for more than three years.

Our original goal was to do 100 episodes. We finish with 125 -- not a bad run. We might at some point resume the podcast. That possiblity always exists. Even if that doesn't happen, however, we'd just like everyone to know how much we appreciate you taking the time listen to our conversations over the past three years!

You know the name, have heard the ads, and have seen the trucks. Now learn the story behind Von Paris Moving and Storage, one of Maryland's oldest and most successful companies. President and CEO John Von Paris stops by Mainstreet to share the history behind the family name and the company his great-grandfather founded in the late 1800s. John also brings us up to date on how the moving and storage industries have evolved over the years, and if you plan on moving any time soon, you'll benefit from John's tips on how to make moving less stressful and more efficient.

We like to reminisce on Mainstreet and John shares memories of growing up on the Von Paris family farm near Kingsville, volunteering for the Kingsvile Fire Company, and how the local community came to his family's aid after a devastating fire destroyed the historical Von Paris farmhouse in 2020. This is the Von Paris story and we're happy to share it on Mainstreet.

Growing up in East Baltimore, Monkton resident Larry Dukes wanted nothing more than to be a professional athlete or sports play-by-play broadcaster. Seeing violent collisions from field level during a stint as an intern for the Baltimore Colts changed his mind. Before computer science was even an established concentration, Larry found himself at the forefront of predictive analytics. He soon found himself working for Baltimore Blue Cross Blue Shield and, later, traveling the world for Westinghouse as a systems engineer. What truly sets Larry apart is his ability to use his expertise and years of experience to starting his own companies and knowing when to support the ideas and expertise of others. Great ideas still excite him. That's why his wife says he's never met a deal he didn't like. For the past 20 years, however, among his most satisfying edeavors has been his active involvement at John Carroll High School.

With Larry Grant, Larry also co-authored Lifting The Rocks, Finding the Gold: Mastering the Six Imperatives of World Class Receivables Management.

No longer pursing professional sports as a career, Larry and his family enjoy their horse farm in Monkton and he's even found time to pursue of play-by-play dreams by broadcasting local sports.

This is Larry Duke's story and we're pleased to share it on Mainstreet.

The year was 1962. Steve Murfin was a sports-crazed kid growing up in Hagerstown, Maryland. Long before 24/7 news cycles and blanket sports coverage on the Internet, Steve gained his encyclopedic knowledge of local teams by devouring box scores in the Hagerstown Daily News and Washington Post. Fall Sundays would find Steve glued to the radio listening to Chuck Thompson and Baily Goss call Colts games, while lazy summer nights meant Steve's transistor radio would be tuned in to the local Hagerstown station carrying O's games called by by Chuck and his on-air partner Bill O'Donnell. Not merely content to be a passive fan, Steve could also be found on neighborhood sports fields trying his best to emulate the likes of Brooks Robinson, Johnny U., and his favorite Lenny Moore. If other kids were available, teams were formed and games ensued. If not, Steve created his own "phantom games" where he alone would pitch, hit, throw, receive, and tackle. A passion for playing and a vivid imagination were all Steve needed. Join us on this episode of Mainstreet and revel in some great childhood memories from a local sports fan who to this day continues to make sports a central part of his life.

Author Richard Chizmar stops by Mainstreet to talk about his celebrated career as a prolific essayist and writer of horror and mysery short stories, novels, and screenplays. He is the founder of Cemetery Dance Publications and editor/publisher of Cemetery Dance magazine. Perhaps best-known in Harford County for his locally-inspired Chasing The Boogeyman, Richard also co-wrote with Stephen King the novella Gwendy's Button Box.

Despite his international following and acclaim, Richard still calls Harford County home. Like his friend and sometimes collaborator, the actor Johnathon Schaech (episode 88), Richard credits the strong work ethic he learned from growing up and playing sports in working-class Edgewood for paving the way to his future success as a writer and publisher.

This is Richard Chizmar's story and we're proud to share it on Mainstreet.

To his legions of local fans, Dennis Schocket is one the hardest working performers in the thriving Harford County music scene. At any number of local venues, you can catch Dennis performing solo, with special guests such as Rob Fahey, or with one of his bands -- Starbelly, 1974, The Atomic Light Orchestra (AL0) and Fabtastic Four. Under appreciated, however, is Dennis's talent for creating complex harmonies and lilting melodies in the service of intricate pop songs that bring to mind the music of Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney.

Dennis makes a return visit to Mainstreet to talk about his new solo album "Weathervane," to be released in April on Tall Boy records, and an upcoming tour with his band Starbelly. Will Dennis, or any of the gifted local musicians he's been associated with over the years, someday win a Grammy? Find out what Dennis thinks on this episode of Mainstreet.

Tony Lombardi stops by Mainstreet to chat about his decision to leave his highly-successful career in sales at Boeing Capital for what initially was, in his own words, "a hobby." That hobby ultimately became a new career as managing partner and journalist for the award-winning Russell Street Report (formerly Ravens247.com) https://russellstreetreport.com/ and the Eutaw Street Report https://eutawstreetreport.com/. With this mid-life career move, Tony lived up to his personal credo of, "Do what you love, love what you do."

Given his new career choice, it's no surprise that this Baltimore native and Loyola grad is a local sports fanatic. What may surprise people, however, is his enduring love of the Beatles. And after you hear Tony describe his admiration for the way the Fab Four worked as a unit to create magic, you'll understand how the success of the Beatles reflect his own approach to work and creativity. In other words, the distance between Abbey Road and Russell Street is closer than we think. This is Tony Lombardi's story and we're pleased to share it on Mainstreet.

Growing up near Baltimore, long-time radio voice of the Washington Wizards Dave Johnson developed a love of sports and broadcasting by listening to, among others, local play-by-play legends Chuck Thompson and Bill O'Donnell. After graduating from Towson University, Dave embarked on his own Emmy-award winning career in broadcasting, including his current posts with the NBA's Washington Wizards and D.C.'s 103.5 WTOP-FM, where he's the sports director and morning sports anchor.

Find out why Dave calls sports a "cocoon of joy" and why he characterizes his career as a series of healthy obsessions. He also shares what it's like having the name "Dave Johnson" in a sports town known for "Dave Johnson's." Let's give a Harford County welcome to one of its newest and most prominent residents!

Former Baltimore Colt cheerleader Leslee Yoder stops by Mainstreet to chat about her years cheering on our once-beloved hometown team. It's hard to believe that nearly 40 years have passed since the Mayflower moving vans whisked away the team to Indianapolis on that fateful night in March 1983.

Now the Head Cheer Coach at York Suburban High School, this York, Pa. native and former dance and gymnastics instructor is also one of the co-founders of the Baltimore Colts Cheerleaders Alumni Association. If you're a former Colt cheerleader or know someone who is, please email her at lyoder1111@aol.com.

Some Marylanders old enough to remember that night in 1983 will never forgive the Irsay family. Even though most of us have long since moved on and embraced the Ravens, we continue to cherish our Baltimore Colts, and the cheerleaders were a huge part of the pageantry that played out on every gameday at Memorial Stadium. So many good memories remain and we are honored that Leslee has chosen to share them on Mainstreet.

Note: During our conversation, Leslee mentions a country club in Ruxton, Md. and asks us for help to correctly pronounce its name. No help was forthcoming at that moment, but the country club to which Leslee referred is: https://www.lhirondelle.com/

We mark our 100th episode with another conversation with an up and coming Nasvhille singer songwriter with local roots. Fans of American Idol may remember Emma Klein from her appearance on the program during its 17th season. Emma is now quickly establishing herself in the competitive yet collaborative entertainment mecca that is Nashville. This is Emma Klein's story and we’re thrilled to share it on Mainstreet.

Have you ever wanted to play in a marching band for an NFL team? If so, Baltimore's Marching Ravens are having auditions on April 1st. This is not an early April Fool's joke. If you're a proud band nerd who's at least 18, love Maryland, and love the Ravens, this could be your chance to join a team that's been part of Baltimore sports history since 1947.

The Baltimore Colts were one of the first NFL teams to have cheerleaders, a fight song, and a marching band. We all know what happened to the Baltimore Colts. What some people may not know is that the Colts Marching Band carried on even after the franchise under Robert Irsay deserted Baltimore. And when the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens, the band was here waiting for them. Today, they're still going strong as Baltimore's Marching Ravens.

Mainstreet is thrilled to have with us on this episode Harford County resident John Ziemann, Band Director for the Marching Ravens. In 1962, at the age of 14 (he lied about his age and said he was 15) John became a member of the Colts Marching Band and 61 years later he's yet to miss a beat.

John fills us in on the storied history of marching bands on Baltimore's professional football teams. He also shares tales from his 35 years working at WMAR-TV and his days as Deputy Director at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum.

Nothing says Americana quite like the Great American Roadtrip. And no American roadtrip in the past would have been complete without Stuckey's. What happened to that American staple of rest stop kitsch, candy, and convenience? In an idea that seemed sound at the time, the Stuckey family sold its stores. Eventually, the Stuckey brand suffered, stores gradually disappered, and their absence left a void. Now, Stuckey's is not only back but back in the Stuckey family. Stephanie Stuckey, the granddaughter of the original owner, is now running the company as its CEO. Stephanie's got big plans for Stuckey's and we're excited to share them with you on episode #91 of Mainstreet.

Marylanders need few if any words to describe the unique beauty of our Eastern Shore. We just seem to understand it instinctively. While words are unnecessary, images help. With that in mind, we welcome Eastern Shore native Melissa Beauchamp to Mainstreet to tell us what inspired her to take up photography and capture the beauty of Maryland's Eastern Shore and share it with the world via social media.

Melissa also brings to her photography the unique perspective not only of someone who paints but of someone who works on the other side of the lens as a model. And how about this for a unique perspective — Melissa’s used to be a private investigator! This is Melissa's story (so far) and we're pleased to share it on Mainstreet.

Better known in his disc jockey days in Baltimore and beyond as "Paul Rodgers" or "The Emperor Rodgers," Paul Rothfuss's career in broadcasting spans seven decades. Like his long-time friend and business partner Kerby Confer (episode #82), Paul eventually gravitated to the sales side of radio before he and Kerby combined their talents and business acumen and started buying radio stations. In this endeavor they became wildly successful. Paul is the author of two books on his life and love affair with radio, "Alias Emperor Rodgers: A Majestic Memoir by Baltimore's Emperor of Insanity in the Crazy Daze of '60s To 40 Radio" and "Wiggles, Winks, & Wizards: Paul and Kerby's Great Adventure."
Think of this episode as a companion to episode #82 featuring Kerby Confer. Kerby and Paul both take us back to the heyday of 1960's Top 40 AM radio, when WCAO became the constant on-air companion to thousands of Baby Boomers in the Baltimore area. In this episode, Paul also gives us a master class on the sales techniques that he and Kerby employed as they evolved into titans of broadcasting.

As a bonus, please visit our website https://themainstreetpodcast.com/to hear an aircheck from 1974 featuring Paul on his final day on air at WYRE in Annapolis. Two other clips we've put on our site feature the inimitable Howard Cosell appraising Paul's on-air talents at the behest of newscaster Dave Humphrey. Both clips are from 1972 and were Humphrey's way of exacting revenge on Paul after years of good-natured abuse on Baltimore's WCBM.

Harford County’s own Jonathon Schaech is perhaps best known for his portrayal of "Jimmy," the mercurial lead singer of the Oneder's, the fictional musical group in the 1996 Tom Hank's film "That Thing You Do." Since then, the Edgewood High School graduate has worked steadily as an acclaimed actor and writer in TV, film, and stage. Now living with his wife and two children near Nashville, Tennessee, this son of a Baltimore City cop shares with Mainstreet listeners the chain of events that led him from pursuing an economics degree at UMBC to a successful acting career in Hollywood and beyond. Along the way also came heartache, and Jonathon is open and truthful about the low points -- the usual show business setbacks but also the pain of divorce and the wounds he suffered early in his career as a victim of sexual assault. Ultimately, however, Jonathon's story is about overcoming these obstacles, continuing to flourish as an actor, and somehow through it all staying grounded -- something he attributes to faith in a higher power and a strong work ethic he learned growing up in Edgewood.

Something Jonathon's local fans can appreciate is that he remains a diehard fan of the O's and Ravens. Few may realize, however, that, in 2014, he and Rick Dempsey co-authored "Caught Stealing," a book about the career of the legendary O's catcher.

Finally, we address a rumor that Jonathon once owned a home in the Bel Air neighborhood of Todd Lakes when he was married to Christina Applegate. True or false? Find out on this episode of Mainstreet.

We welcome as our guest on episode #86 a bona fide prodigy. In 1978, when Baltimore native and Harford County resident John Kutcher was only 13, he could already legitimately call himself a pioneer in software development. An article seen by his mother in the Aegis led to a meeting that sparked young John's interest in computer games. Soon after, he created "Space Taxi," a computer game that became popular enough to help pay John's way through Johns Hopkins University, from which he graduated in three years.

Since his days as a prodigy, John, now CEO of DICORP in Forest Hill, has matured into a successful entreprenuer , pillar of our community in Harford County, and a lifelong baseball fan who sees values learned on the field as translatable to other areas of life. The commitment to those values continues to fuel John's perseverance around his personal, business, and philanthropic passions, including an exciting new partnership with Double Groove in Forest Hill.

From 1994 until 2004, Harford County resident Ken Cloude pursued his dream of a pitching career in Major League baseball.  On August 15, 1997, that dream got a big boost when Ken won his first Major League game -- against the hometown Orioles with a sizable contingent of Ken's family and friends among the crowd at Camden Yards.  Injuries ultimately cut short the bright promise of a long MLB career but this East Baltimore native and graduate of The McDonogh School found contentment and meaning in his new career in law enforcement as a police officer and K-9 handler for The Maryland Transportation Authority.  We are pleased to share Ken's story on this episode of Mainstreet!

The name Kerby Confer may not ring a bell, but if you remember when local youth listened to AM radio for music, you certainly remember the name "Kerby Scott."  Kerby was a fixture on WCAO when that station ruled the pop music airwaves in the 1960s. By mid-decade, Kerby had become so popular that WBAL-TV gave him his own teen dance show, "The Kerby Scott Show," an updated (and integrated) successor to the Buddy Deane Show. Name the group or pop star of that era and Kerby met them.

Baltimore marked merely the beginning of Kerby's long and illustrious career in broadcasting. He's got plenty of stories about the stars he met, the mentors who guided his career, and the music he loves. He's Kerby "Scott" Confer and we are honored to have him on episode #82 of Mainstreet.

We are honored to welcome Father Michael Rubeling, Associate Pastor at St. Margaret Parish in Bel Air, as our guest on this episode of Mainstreet.

A native of Frederick, Maryland, and the eldest of 10 children, Father Michael learned early from the example of his parents about generosity and how to make faith the guiding force in his life. His own path to the priesthood, however, was not without initial doubt and struggle. Father Michael speaks with candor and humor about this and other experiences that have shaped the man he is. He also talks about some of the things that make St. Margaret unique in its active commitment to community outreach. Finally, Father Michael reminds us all, Christian or otherwise, why we need mercy and where to find it.

Listeners already familiar with Father Michael will recognize in our conversation the same enthusiasm on display when he's celebrating Mass at St. Margaret.

Lost in the political maelstrom of the Dobbs decision is the struggle women go through when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Whether you identify as pro-life or pro-choice, or something in between, it's difficult not to applaud the efforts of an organization that exists to give unconditional support to the women (and often the men who love them) who find themselves confronted with the most difficult decision they may ever have to make.

On this episode of Mainstreet, Executive Director of Birthright of Harford County Stephanie Atha stops by to discuss her organization's mission, her own life experiences that led her to her current position, and the central role that faith plays in her life but also how the Birthright of Harford County supports all women, regardless of their faith, with unconditional love.

Most of us have a person in our lives, often an elderly family member, who speaks without filters and says exactly what's on his or her mind. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cringe, but if we listen closely, these "outbursts" may also contain some important life lessons. And even when they don't, they're entertaining. Author Bonnie Lorber Habyan, a John Carroll graduate , has not only listened to her mother's seemingly random thoughts over the years but has compiled them into a new book, "The World According to Bess."

Published on her mother's 91st birthday, "The World According to Bess" is out now and ready to be shared with the world. We spoke with Bonnie back in September, when she was at an earlier stage in the book process, and on episode #72 we welcome her back to update us and share stories about what it was like growing up with Bess. In hearing tales from Bess's world, we may also gain a deeper appreciation for those unfiltered sages in our own lives.

Cults, rock n' roll on the Sunset Strip, creating music, and, of course, his award-winning podcast are among the many subjects we discuss with Brad Cox . Brad brings an intensity to all his projects and that characteristic comes through in our conversation. This is Brad Cox's story and we're happy to share it on this episode of Mainstreet.

Born in land-locked Arizona, Dr. Shannon dreamed of becoming a marine mammal veterinarian. In pursuit of that dream, she accepted an internship as an undergrad to become a Disney cast member as part of Epcot Center's marine mammal team. Among her more glamorous duties in this capacity was cleaning manatee tanks. She's come a long way and since January of 2020 has lived with her family in Bel Air and provided hospice care for pets as owner of Eternal Paw Prints. Dr. Shannon reminds pet lovers that when this inevitable stage arrives in the lives of our furry family members, the process, while never easy, can be dignified and peaceful. We are pleased to share Dr. Shannon's story on episode #66 of Mainstreet.

Imagine a world without electricty, computers, and cars. In such a world, one group of people would emerge as indipsensible -- farmers. Even with all those things, farmers are still indispensible. We just don't pay attention.

On episode #65, Ben Hushon, agronomist for The Mill of Black Horse, stops by Mainstreet to remind us of how vital farming is to our daily lives, how technology is making farming more efficient and environmentally safe, and the threat inflation poses to this critical industry. As an agronomist for the local and family-owned Mill, Ben is essentially a "farmer's coach." Helping farmers grow more while also reducing their impact on the environment is what Ben does.

Of course, Mainstreet has never been merely about facts. We bring people on here to tell their stories. Ben shares with us memories of growing up on a dairy farm in Delta, Pennsylvania. Milking cows, feeding calves, fixing things, and driving tractors characterized Ben's life before he even entered his teens. Sundays meant church, large family gatherings, big hearty home-cooked meals, and ball games with enough cousins to make the Kennedys envious.

This is Ben's story and we're happy to share it on Mainstreet in this quinessential Harford County episode about farming.

Harford County entrepreneur George Mullin, a visionary risk-taker, lives by the motto that you can't steal second with your foot on first. Experience has also taught him that success takes a lot of good small decisions but failure takes only one or two big bad ones. In this first part of a two-part episode, George talks about moving to Harford County as a child from North Miami Beach, nightclubbing during the 1970s and 1980s, and the valuble business lessons from his life in the food service business, including one of his current ventures -- Havre de Grace's Vintage Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor. Memories, life lessons, and vision -- this episode has it all!

Jessica Long is an elite athlete with a jaw-dropping string of accomplishments and awards. The path to that lofty status, however, has not been without frustration. Along with her 29 Paralympic medals, Jessica has had to endure 25 surguries as a result of fibular hememila, a cogenital limb deficiency that led to the amputation of both legs below the knee. Born to teenage parents in Russia, Jessica also had to learn to forgive her birth mother for giving her up for adoption. Instead of succuming to the anger that she acknowledges characterized her early years, Jessica transformed the power of that anger into determination and used it to fuel her wildly successful career as a Paryalympic swimmer. Along with her own determination, Jessica credits her adoptive parents, Marylanders Beth and Stephen Long, and her Christian faith with making her the person she is today. This is Jessica's story and we're honored to share it on Mainstreet.

Kingsville resident Bruce Seward stops by Mainstreet to talk about his distinguished career in Baltimore County education, including 35 years at Perry Hall High School, home of the Gators. Starting as an English teacher, Bruce later became a counselor before ultimately serving as Director of Guidance, a position he held until his "first retirement." With a house soon full of grandkids, however, Bruce decided to ditch diaper duty, come out of retirement, and mentor students and staff at Towson High School until he retired for good in 2016.

A devout Catholic, Bruce considers his time at Perry Hall a blessing, second only to meeting Diane, his wife of 54 years. Bruce is full of praise for the woman he calls the love of his life, but he also shares a story of what can happen when an overly-ardent young man tries to steal an innocent kiss from a good Catholic girl before she's ready. Bruce and Diane have called Kingsville home for 46 years and remain active in the community. And when the opportunity arises, they love to travel.

Bruce shares many memories with us on this episode of Mainstreet -- his idyllic childhood in what was then the "village" of Towson, some pre-teaching part-time jobs that were in their own way educational, and why, even in retirement, he continues to see the good in today's students, even as he laments changes in child rearing attitudes that arose among some parents and educators during the 1970s.

What comes through repeatedly during our conversation is Bruce Seward's abiding commitment to education, students, and kids in general -- provided they no longer need their diapers changed.

We are honored to have as our guest on this episode Carol Dankmeyer. If you are at all interested in the early days of television in Baltimore, this is the episode for you. After a year in radio, at WCBM, Carol worked two stints at WMAR-TV, first from 1950-1954 and again from 1964-1968. She shares with us many stories about the local and national celebrities she met during that time, including Bailey Goss, Gary Moore, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis Jr., Jim Nabors, Mickey Rooney, and Dorothy Lamour, who at the time lived with her family in Dulaney Valley. Carol also recalls her days as a dance instructor for the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.

Originally from Long Island but descended on her father's side from French Huguenots who settled in Havre de Grace, Carol grew up in Towson and since 2004 has lived in Bel Air. She is a devout Christian and is an active member at the New Covenant Community Church of God.

Not all of her jobs were as exciting as the ones she had in TV, but Carol, who turns 92 in February, has lived quite the life and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with her.

We end 2021 as we began -- with an encore presentation of of our first episode, an interview with Jim Miller. When we spoke to Jim back in early 2021 he was eager to return to performing in Beatles tribute bands as "Paul McCartney." In the past few months, he's done just that. In fact, you have a chance to see him live on January 1st at the Hollywood Casino in Perryville with "Bealtemania Returns!"

Happy New Year and we'll be back with a new episode on January 3, 2022.

Rich Bennett is a one-man Harford County institution. This Joppatowne native embraces several roles -- husband, father, Marine, DJ, rocker, web designer, community volunteer, broadcaster, Special Olympics hugger, and host of several podcasts, including "Harford County Living" with Rich Bennett. Most important, Rich is a generous soul who prefers partnering to competing. When he heard that two guys in Bel Air had started a podcast called "Mainstreet," he could have gone negative. Instead, he welcomed us to the party. No wonder the go-to Santa in Harford County is Rich Bennett.

Rabbi Kushi Schusterman leads a thriving Jewish community at the Harford Chabad, now located on Bond Street but its future home will be on East Broadway. Steve and I were both unaware that such a community existed in Bel Air and were curious to learn more about the community's history, mission, and beliefs.

Thankfully, Rabbi Schusterman was willing to come on Mainstreet and answer some of our questions. Jewish and non-Jewish listeners alike will benefit from Rabbi Schusterman's wisdom, which he shares through stories, anecdotes, and jokes. He also sometimes answers our questions with a question. After all, he's a rabbi -- a rabbi who calls himself a rebel by nature who doesn't like rules.
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Rabbi Kushi Schusterman.

To help promote this episode, Edgewood resident BangTam Miller sent us two photos. Instead of a photo merely showing herself, the photos showed her with family. That reveals a great deal about who BangTam Miller is and what she values. In this episode, we chat with BangTam about the experience that brought her from war-torn Viet Nam to Edgewood, the strong values imparted to her and her siblings from her father, and her tireless commitment to education and making Edgewood a safe and thriving community. BangTam also lets us know the best places in the area to find authentic Vietnamese food!

To date, BangTam's experience is undoubtedly the most dramatic one we've featured on The Mainstreet Podcast.

Home-schooled until he was 14, Noah also talks about how that experience, a mission trip from his church to a Native American reservation in Arizona, and a summer in Dublin, Ireland all contributed in shaping his worldview and developing his love of imagery and storytelling. You'll have to forgive Steve and me for at times sounding, to use Steve's word, giddy during our conversation with retired Baltimore County teacher and administrator Bob Pettebone. Except for a brief phone conversation to schedule our interview for this episode, I hadn't had any contact with Mr. Pettebone since the mid-1970s. Steve has seen him only a couple of times over the same time span. Talking to him after so many years, I had the strange sensation of regressing to my fourth-grade self. And I liked it! Hearing him describe how at Gunpowder Elementary he came to call me "Lerch" for the way I sat in my chair, especially, in his recollection, when next to a cute girl, led me to two conclusions. First, the man has a phenomenal memory. Second, in addition to trying to get to know my cute classmate better, I wonder if I was also trying to copy her homework.

So, again, forgive our occasional giddiness, but few students who were blessed to have Mr. Pettebone as a teacher walked away unchanged for the better. We hope you enjoy hearing about his illustrious career in education as much as Steve and I did.

In roughly 15 minutes, Steve and Lee discuss their experience on Main Street in Cooperstown, Ellicott City, and Salisbury.  Lee wonders if a brawl has ever broken out at an induction ceremony at the Baseball Hall of Fame between, say, Red Sox and Yankees' fans, or Phillies' fans who among only themselves still find reason to fight?  Steve, then,  poses the following question: Should Harford County have a county fair?  Imagine a county fair held at an agreed-upon location where each town in Harford County can showcase their best features.

Bonnie Habyan has achieved much since graduating from John Carroll High School. Stints as Miss Harford County and Miss Oriole led to early career pursuits in broadcasting and communications and eventually marriage to former O's pitcher John Habyan and the birth of their daughter.

Being the wife of a Major Leaguer meant frequent moves and changes in career paths. Eventually, Bonnie found a way to use her experience in communications to launch a successful new career in real estate.

In addition to stories from her career and family life, Bonnie relates to Steve and Lee her enduring fondness for Harford County and the education she received at John Carroll. She also shares her excitement about being a soon-to-be published author with a book compiling a lifetime of quotes from her mother that sometimes baffled Bonnie when she was growing up but ultimately revealed motherly wisdom and truth. Look for The World According to Bess in June wherever you buy books.

We welcome back to Mainstreet Billy Boniface, Chief Advisor to Harford County Executive Barry Glassman. Assigned by County Executive Glassman to ensure the Ma Pa extension stays on course, Mr. Boniface is uniquely qualified to update us on current developments - the segment two connection that will extend the trail from MD 924 (North Main Street) to North Avenue, and the segment three extension that will link to the existing stretch of the trail in Forest Hill.

Once completed, the Ma Pa Trail will total eight miles and run from Edgeley Grove Park in Fallston to Friends Park in Forest Hill.

For our listeners living outside of Harford County, the Ma Pa Heritage Trail is a multi-purpose trail popular with walkers, runners, and bikers. It takes its name from and follows the path of the old Maryland-Pennsylvania (Ma Pa) Railroad, which at one time passed through Harford County but ceased passenger service in 1954.

Like any project, the Ma Pa Trail has not been without delays. Mr. Boniface enlightens us on reasons behind those delays and also answers a couple of questions from our listeners.

If you'd like to learn more about Billy Boniface and his family's long history in Harford County, please listen to episode #8, from March 8, 2021.

After 28 years as a librarian in the Harford County Public Library system, Havre de Grace resident Irmgarde Brown decided to write a novel. On episode #34, this sometimes impulsive but talented Indianapolis native stops by Mainstreet to talk about how she wound up living in Havre de Grace after stops in Chicago, New York, and Atlanta, and how along the way she studied acting, got married, raised a family, and in June of this year became a published author with the release of her critically-acclaimed novel "Sister Jane." Record hops at the local high school, The Buddy Deane Show, and marrying the girl next door. These are just some of the memories Forest Hill photographer Jerry Taylor, Bel Air High School Class of 1962, shares on episode #32 of Mainstreet. Jerry also leads us on a yesteryear walk down Bel Air's Main Street, sharing mostly happy times but also shedding light on the unfair policies that existed during the civil rights era.

A retired licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, Jerry now devotes much of his life to his lifelong passion for photography. He shares some practical tips for any level photographer and tells the story behind a series of photographs he took of gypsy children in Romania.

We barely scratched the surface with Jerry in this episode and we'll try to have him back at some point for a follow-up conversation.

At the end of the interview, Jerry even serenades us, proving there is truth to the saying, "like father like daughter."

In the first of two episodes about our hometown of Perry Hall, we speak with Marianna Weaver, widow of legendary O's manager Earl Weaver, and her daughter Kim Benson.  From 1968 until 1982, Earl and his family lived in a modest home on Dundawan Road in Perry Hall during an era that saw the O's  capture two world championships, four pennants, and six division titles.  It was a magical time to follow the O's and to live in Perry Hall. Marianna and Kim share memories of the neighbors they knew, Earl's patience and humor, and the unique way a 10 year-old Kim  used a friend's baseball card collection to  make clear that a new sheriff was in town to replace Hank Bauer.
