The Sato Project is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico. There are currently an estimated 500,000 stray dogs roaming the island’s streets and beaches. With no access to food, fresh water, or veterinary care, many of these dogs are living daily lives of severe suffering. The municipal shelter system is drastically overwhelmed, with only five shelters across all 78 of the island’s municipalities. These shelters have a combined euthanasia rate of over 94%. For thousands of stray and abandoned dogs across Puerto Rico, the Sato Project is their only hope.

At True and Faithful they look at every dog individually. Most of the dogs they rescue have had little or no veterinary care. When they come to their program they are fully vetted including vaccines, surgeries, dental and spay or neuter. No dog is excluded from their rescue due to age or medical issues.
In their first year, they were able to rescue and find homes for over six hundred dogs.

Spotlight: Humane Society International’s work to end the dog meat trade
Every June in Yulin, China, thousands of dogs and cats—including stolen pets—are slaughtered for the city’s annual dog meat festival, started in 2010 by dog meat traders to boost flagging business. In recent years, thanks largely to the efforts of HSI and our partner groups, this event has become gradually more muted and small-scale. In the face of worldwide condemnation, officials have cracked down on public displays of slaughter and limited advertisement of dog meat by restaurants. But the killing still goes on in the backstreets and out-of-town slaughterhouses under the cover of darkness. For the past several years HSI has been a leading global voice to see an end to the suffering of animals in China’s year-round and country-wide dog meat trade, and together with our wonderful Chinese partner groups we have been able to assist with rescues of thousands of dogs from the brutal dog meat trade from across China, including at the Yulin festival. Established in August of 1996, this is believed to be the oldest Elkhound Rescue page on the Internet. It arose from the common desires of group of people with one common goal: to find caring, loving homes for Norwegian Elkhounds and Elkhound mixes, in both the United States and Canada. Eventually these desires and goal became the foundation of a rescue organization called the John Nelsen Moosedog Rescue Fund.
Norweigan Elkhound Association of American - https://neaa.net/elkhound-rescueNorwegian Elkhound Association of America (NEAA) does not in and of itself participate in the active rescue of Norwegian Elkhounds. Instead, the organization assigns a Rescue Chairman and Co-Chairman to a rescue committee whose job it is to update and maintain a network of contacts who aid in the re-homing of lost, abandoned or surrendered Norwegian Elkhounds.
These contacts, located in several states, cities and towns are run through the regional member specialty clubs of NEAA, or by well-established independent Norwegian Elkhound rescue groups comprised of dedicated volunteers.
While they do not have dogs available for adoption on their website, they gladly assist with questions and guidance for those looking to adopt, or those finding themselves in need of rehoming an elkhound.
