Christmas is a time of hope, but hope is not about wishful thinking or easy answers. Instead, Ps. Kelsey Lasher tells us, hope neither changes our circumstances nor is changed by them. What hope does is change us in our circumstances. Have a merry Christmas as you reflect on the coming of the hope of Jesus into your life and our world!
Life is complex, and when things are out of order, it can fall apart. The biblical framework of peace isn’t the absence of chaos and conflict, but God's wholeness. Ps. Tyler Zabor introduces us to the true peace that comes in the arrival and presence of Jesus.
Joy is not just feeling festive at a special time of year. It is a response to God's grace. Ps. Kelsey Shepardson gives us an awesome challenge to learn the discipline of joy in our lives by looking to the God who speaks a message of grace to us.
(with Q&A)
This is not a sermon about how to meet the right person. In fact, Ps. Ike hasn't been on a first date since 2003. But our culture gives so much bad advice about how to have healthy personal, romantic, and professional relationships. But the people who have the healthiest and most fulfilling relationships all do two things: they love others and they obey God.
(with Q&A)
If you struggle with anxiety, you're not alone. In this message Ps. Ike shares his personal journey with anxiety. For all of us, there are some helpful tools for us in dealing with anxiety, but a simple truth is also incredibly comforting: God cares about us and our anxieties. Substantial recovery and healing is possible with God.
Ps. Scott gives loads of practical advice in this message. From our relationship to technology to the ways that we rest, we're encouraged to keep the big things big and to focus our lives on following Jesus.
A common notion is that if we pool our collective efforts, we can change the world. However, in practice, while activism is up, global suffering continues to increase, as well. What is missing in trying to bring about real change in the world? Ps. Tyler Zabor points us to the kind of change that brings lasting impact to societies in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Conventional wisdom is that being true to yourself means listening to your heart. While our emotions can be incredibly helpful, this way of life can often leave us jumping from feeling to feeling in search of authenticity. Ps. Kelsey Shepardson encourages us that emotions are incredibly important, but they need to be informed by Scripture, reason, and reality. When our emotions are guided by the truth, that's when they can be really powerful.
"Different strokes for different folks." Conventional wisdom is that what is good for me may not be what is good for you. However, this perspective leads to some serious problems. Ps. Ike helps to point us to a deep human need for objective moral justice, and ultimately this is only found in Jesus.
What happens when people dream of bringing the hope of Jesus to a city? Something that looks a little like a church, but also something that looks a lot more like a movement where lives are changed, community is born, and people find a home. Ps. Scott Lasher tells us that this last year is just the beginning for Hope Denver. Do you want to be a part of the story?
There is definitely something good to gain from advice like "speak your truth," but this advice can be confusing when it comes to things that are not up for interpretation. How do we live in a culture where everyone has biases and differing opinions? How do we be respectful towards those with whom we disagree while recognizing the fact that sometimes we all get it wrong? Ps. Ike Shepardson's message this week aims to help us think about truth based on how Jesus lived his life and how we ought to live our lives.
In our culture, people design spirituality around their desires, wishes, and hopes. But what if the truth about what matters most was bigger and better than anything you've hoped for? Ps. Kelsey Shepardson challenges us to look forward to a future hope that is unshakeable, one that is worth everything we have.
Life is best lived with close ties to people who are also trying to follow Jesus, but the most important part of the mix is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us boldness to speak about our deepest commitments. He gives us the ability to follow God. He is God's way of speaking to us when we need direction the most.
When you meet Jesus, things will never be the same. Ps. Ike Shepardson walks through a story of a man healed by Jesus and how we can have substantial healing through Jesus today.
Ps. Kelsey Shepardson teaches us about Jesus' mission to bring salvation to people. When Jesus saves people, he helps them distance themselves from the status conventions of the world, give their money generously to the poor, and find their value not in what they have, but in God.
Does it ever feel like all of your hard work is going nowhere? The truth is that any satisfaction or benefit that we find from work will always feel fleeting without connecting to the true source of significance. Ps. Scott Lasher encourages us to find our rest and satisfaction in Jesus. Only through Jesus does our work have lasting meaning.
Ps. Ike Shepardson teaches us how to invite the Holy Spirit to fill us and what happens when we do. See Ephesians 5:15-20.
It's easy to look at your job as a means to personal goals, but what if you looked at work as part of a much bigger plan to set things right in the world? The Bible actually points us toward a way of life where everything that we do, even our work, can be part of God's mission to redeem and heal the world. In this message, Ps. Kelsey Shepardson teaches us what Bible means when it talks about "being a blessing" to others.
What would happen if followers of Jesus had a reputation for being more skilled and diligent in our work than anyone else? What if our work was a passion instead of a pain? Pastors Cassie and Tyler Zabor teach us that Christians can look at our work differently and have a unique impact on the world around us through our work.
We typically think of work either a curse or as something that we do so that we can do what we really love. However, when we look more deeply into reality, we see that work is an inherent good that humanity was designed to do. Ps. Ike Shepardson encourages us to see that work is deeply connected to God's nature and to human nature.
Life is complicated, but what we see in Jesus' life and death is a simple message of redemption of everything in our lives. In fact, as Ps. Scott Lasher shares with us, what Jesus has done for us brings a holistic kind of healing that changes everything about our lives for the better.
There is something about human nature which desires comfort. Sometimes we can be get too comfortable and forget what Jesus has done in our lives. Ps. Tyler Zabor challenges us to remember that what we have in Jesus is better than anything that has come before.
Do you ever have difficulty trusting God? This is common, but Ps. Kelsey Lasher helps us see that we can have confidence that God is trustworthy and that his promises will come to pass.
Ps. Ike Shepardson shares on how Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to empower us. See Acts 1:1-8.
Athletes who win a race never give up. It's the same for Jesus' followers. Ps. Ike Shepardson explains that following Jesus leads to maturity and to an attitude that diligently pursues God through the Scriptures and through community.
Being a follower of Jesus does not mean being comfortable. In fact, Jesus himself gives us a model for how to thrive in suffering and to learn from our circumstances. Ps. Kelsey Shepardson points us to Jesus' example and calls us to embrace the God's mission to redeem the world.
What does it mean to say that God speaks? If we are open to listen, we will find that God's words bring encouragement and correction, timely help and guidance. Ps. Ike Shepardson encourages us that all of this is possible for those who are willing to apprentice their lives to Jesus.
Anything that is worth doing takes diligence. For apprentices of Jesus, this means a day-by-day and moment-by-moment focus on obedience to God. Ps. Tyler Zabor helps us to focus on following Jesus "today." In doing so, we will have the rest that we need as we model our lives after Jesus.
In our culture, caring for the self is often seen as the ultimate good, but Ps. Kelsey Shepardson explains that obsessing about self-image is a distraction from our purpose. The key to this is becoming an apprentice of Jesus who shows us the way of humility. Through Jesus, we can be content with obscurity, knowing that we are treasured by God.
Our culture of comparison is out of control. Ps. Scott Lasher talks through how what we do is not what makes us valuable. Jesus' relentless, pursuing love changes the equation of how we look at what professional, academic, or personal success looks like.
A healthy lifestyle is a good thing, but health easily becomes an idol when we find ourselves seeking the good life through healthy living. Ps. Kelsey Lasher helps us to put physical health in the right perspective while putting God first.
Anytime that our goals get out of sync with who God made us to be, it means that we’ve created an idol. This happens all of the time with relationships and sex. Ps. Ike Shepardson casts a vision for how beautiful love can be if you cast aside your idols. When you put God first, everything else that you need will come to you in its time.
Busyness, success, or how we look are idols that can control our lives, but Ps. Kelsey Shepardson invites us to reject anything that would steal our happiness and meaning for cheap imitations. These counterfeits can never replace the only One who satisfies, and if we reject idols, our lives will inevitably look different.
Did Jesus actually rise from the dead? People think of faith as if it is completely divorced from evidence and reason. This is not a biblical understanding of faith. In fact, if we have good historical reasons to believe that Jesus actually rose from the dead, this changes everything. Ps. Ike Shepardson explains that we have good evidence to believe the resurrection, and if we do, then we need to take the step and start following Jesus.
When we place our hope in the world (in others, in our jobs, in our circumstances), we end up disappointed. Ps. Scott Lasher invites us to consider that following God is not about simple happiness or the fulfillment of our own goals. Jesus didn't come to fulfill our expectations; he came to exceed them.
People are inspired by Jesus, and Christians have always believed that Jesus is their Savior. But Ps. Kelsey Shepardson challenges us that Jesus needs to be our Savior and our Model. We need to pattern our lives after his, and if we do, we'll find healing and beauty and truth.
If you don't pursue, you'll drift. Ps. Kelsey Lasher teaches us that maintaining our pursuit of Christ requires us to carefully remember who he is, what he's done, and why we pursue him. Otherwise, we will drift away.
Our culture has a superiority complex. Our pride and self-righteousness can even make us think that our own opinions are the highest authorities. But what if there is someone who already has the superior name, position, power, and authority? This is exactly what we learn about Jesus in the Book of Hebrews. Pastor Tyler Zabor gives this week's message on the amazing authority that Jesus has.
Is there a disconnect between your goals and your habits? All too often, the way we live our lives doesn't match up with what we're pursuing. In the first message in our new series, Ps. Ike challenges us to remember that Jesus is Lord, and today is the day to start pursuing him.
Myth #1 - Christianity is prudish about sex. Myth #2 - Christianity is anti-singleness. Ps. Ike Shepardson takes us into 1 Corinthians 7 to explain that sex is deeply affirmed in the Bible. But no matter what our relationship status is, we need to put God first.
This is NOT a self-help sermon. Instead, Ps. Ike Shepardson challenges us that what we believe about marriage impacts what we believe about what it means to be human, how things went wrong in our world, and how they can be made right again.
Love isn't quite what you think it is. Ps. Scott Lasher explains that our culture's view of love is lacking, but when we start to understand the character of God, it leads us into practicing a revolutionary love for God, the self, and others.
Truth is always most powerful when it changes the way that we think on a regular basis. Ps. Kelsey Shepardson challenges us to let God's truth speak to us in our everyday lives through the rhythm of reading the Bible.
Rest is a gift, but it's often a gift we reject. Ps. Tyler Zabor teaches us to get in the rhythm of a regular day of rest where we plan ahead, worship God, and enjoy a fuller life with God.
Everyone of Jesus’ followers is needed in God’s family, so we need to commit to the rhythm of life in community together. Ps. Ike encourages us to be in regular relationship with God's people.
Does your life have a healthy rhythm? Are your habits helping you to live the good life? Ps. Ike challenges us that the good life under God comes to those who have a rhythm in their lives of publicly and privately praising God and calling out to him in prayer.
Ps. Kelsey Shepardson shares a Christmas reflection on Jesus entrance into the mess of our lives and our world. You don't want to miss this encouraging word on how God is close to us in our darkest and most confusing moments.
Jesus is the serving King. Ps. Ike Shepardson invites us to give our lives to serve Jesus and others. Even more, being followers of King Jesus means that we don’t seek after honor and status; rather, we seek to serve like Jesus served.
Are you willing to be interrupted? Jesus is so special because he is willing to be interrupted to serve others. Ps. Scott Lasher welcomes us to consider Jesus' way of life and challenges us to give up selfishness and hyper-individualism to live a life of service.
The way of the world is entitlement. The way of Jesus is servanthood. If you want to be like Jesus, be a servant. Ps. Kelsey Shepardson challenges us that a life of significance starts with a life of service.
If we want the life of Jesus, we need to adopt the lifestyle of Jesus. In this episode, Ps. Tyler Zabor teaches us how Jesus relentlessly pursues the outsider. Because we are Jesus' followers, we are called to do likewise.
Ps. Kelsey Lasher teaches about the power of biblical friendship this week. When we offer hospitality and our time to one another and when we bear one another's burdens, the world gets to see a picture of Jesus.
Jesus’ radical way of life left others around him in a kind of culture shock. And it has to do with his radical inclusion. Ps. Ike shows how Jesus embodies radical inclusion for those who are radically far from God.
What does it take to have an actual encounter with God? Experiencing God is incredible, but it means receiving God’s Kingdom through turning from sin and turning to Jesus. Ps. Ike invites you to cultivate a relationship with the one who created your soul.
Ps. Kelsey Shepardson teaches us that we serve a God who feels as deeply as we do, a God who experienced loss and heartbreak. Although Jesus has the ability to heal and overcome our pain, he is not indifferent or impervious to it. You're invited to meet the God who raises the dead to life.
What does a lifestyle of following Jesus look like? What does it mean to be part of God's culture? Ps. Ike challenges us that living in God's culture means being passionate about the truth, and since Jesus claimed to be God, we need to live in accordance with the truth about who Jesus is. We are invited to encounter God in Jesus.
Ps. Ike gives an introduction to what we're all about. We are a church that is all about hope. We believe that Jesus is the hope of the world, and true hope lives in the community of God's people. Join us every Sunday at 5:30pm at 2180 S. University Blvd. in Denver, Colorado.
When people think about religion, they often think about rules that you have to obey to be acceptable. However, the picture in the Bible is that we have access to Jesus because of what He has already done on our behalf. Ps. Scott shares about how we can be close to Jesus now because Jesus has chosen to be with us. He is with us now, has always been with us, and will always be with us.
As humans, we were designed to belong, connect, and grow in relationship with one another and with God. Ps. Tyler teaches that although we live in a time that is corrosive to life in community, the church offers the world a community of hope and an outpost for the lonely. Christ’s work on the cross radically changes our relationship to God as well as one another.
