In this episode I review four different Upper Deck Hockey products.
I cover 2021-22 Upper Deck Premier, 21-22 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection, 21-22 Upper Deck Ice, and 21-22 Upper Deck Credentials.
There four releases come in at a variety of price points, but as you’ll hear, buying singles might be the way to go for some of these.

In these days of polarized headlines, not a week goes by without hearing a bit of hobby news and “expert” analysis that follows. That analysis often points toward two extremes. There is the perception that it is the greatest thing ever, or that it is proof that the hobby is dead, or will be shortly.
In today’s episode I share my opinion on the “Hobby is Dead” mantra. While there may be some truth to that idea, depending on your definition of the hobby, I feel there is an argument to be made that the hobby is alive and well.
Enjoy!

I’ve started to dabble in vintage cricket cards.
Do you ever find yourself in a collecting rut? Times where cards from the big three sports are harder to find or more expensive than you’d like? Well, those are the times where I start to explore some other collecting genres. Vintage and PreWar cricket cards are one of those areas for me!
In today’s episode I discuss some of non-mainstream sports which have cards available and some of the cricket cards I’ve been exploring!

I’ll be sharing some of the contents of these boxes with a couple listeners.
1) Trilogy Prize Pack - I will be giving the hits and serial numbered cards from the Trilogy box to one listener who leaves a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! You have until 6/30/21 to leave your review, and I’ll be doing the drawing sometime during the first week of July.

Today, I share what my collecting focus has been over the last few months.
I felt myself starting to get a bit burnt out with the hobby. However, as I thought about it, I realized that I was actually getting burnt out on the negativity and complaining we often see on social media. There were several things I was still having a ton of fun collecting, and the buying and selling side was continuing to go well.
So I thought I’d spend a few minutes sharing how I changed my focus and the types of things I’ve enjoyed tracking down lately.
Let me know what you think!

Today, I share which products I’ve been testing, and I cover what seems to be working and what isn’t gaining steam.

I wrote a guest blog on COMC which covered the same topic, and you can find that post here!
The set I built was the 2019-20 Upper Deck Series 2 Rookie Materials set. It contained 40 cards and since it has several scarcity tiers, it proved to be a bit of a challenge to complete. I had to have some patience and do a bit of hunting to get it done!

It’s time for me to finally share my full thoughts on Grading Sports cards.
There are benefits to getting your cards graded, and in the current market the selling prices for top graded cards from PSA, SGC, and BGS definitely sell for more than raw cards. However, there are also drawbacks, risks, and other considerations collectors should consider when either submitting or buying raw cards.
In this episode I go into more detail about the pros, cons, and other considerations hobbyists should think about when evaluating the graded sports card market.

A couple weeks ago I asked the Twitter universe a fun question via a poll.
I asked which of these hobby companies you would want to own and why: Card Manufacturer, Ultra Pro, Beckett, PSA.
The responses were quite interesting, so I decided to break them down in a podcast episode. I didn’t want to do it by myself, so I invited Iven (@watchthebreaks) Lovegren onto the show to share his perspective as well.
We discuss the pros and cons of each of the options and how the responses may change depending on if you were looking at it from a “business” or “enjoyment” perspective!
I hope the conversation inspires you to think differently and dream a little on what it would be like to be in charge of a company serving this hobby we all love!

There are ways to ship packages of sports cards that are expensive, or there are ways to ship packages at a very reasonable cost.
If you ship any sports cards worth more than $10, or if you have packages that weigh over 1 pound, then you need to ship via 1st class package or priority. In today’s episode I share how I do that in a cost effective manner so the cards arrive safely at the lowest possible cost.

What if each sports card manufacturer chose one product from each sport to print to order all season long?
This would address the high prices due to scarcity and lack of supply. It would potentially boost sales for the manufacturer while at the same time continuing to “protect” values of all the other releases due to the continued “responsible” production levels they would continue to have.
I detail more of my thoughts in the episode, and I’d love to hear what you think after listening!

The price of sealed wax boxes have steadily risen over the last several years, and now we are in a situation where the “market price” of sealed boxes significantly higher that what we’ve historically seen.
The current industry demand and fairly low supply are driving the prices, however those prices are also making it more difficult to profit from ripping and flipping.
Rich Klein and I analyze the value of content a collector could expect to receive out of both hobby and retail packages of Topps Heritage. This process can be researched and repeated for almost every product you are considering.
Following a similar methodology can help you decide if a particular product fits within your collecting budget and objectives.

Having a plan or a budget for your sports card purchases is a helpful tool which can increase your enjoyment of the hobby.
Some have a certain amount of their income set aside for card purchases. Personally, I only spend money on cards that comes from the sale of other cards. So my card budget is only limited by the amount of sales I have!
Here are a few questions to get you thinking about coming up with a cardboard budget/plan of your own.
What is your approach?
Do you have a goal?
Do you have a set budgeted amount you set aside for cards?
Do you sacrifice a car or something for your house to buy another box of cards?
Do you buy cards instead of saving for retirement, or does buying and selling add to the money you have available for retirement?

Sometime near the end of 1984, or early in 1985, a curious little baseball memorabilia product was released. Fun Foods Inc. from Little Silver, NJ released a 133 player set of MLB baseball buttons.
They came in 36 count boxes of three button packs. Each quarter size button features a player photo on the front and the button number, position, and stat on the back. A simple but fun product for kids in the 80s.

A few years ago Brad Balukjian embarked on quite a journey. While sitting in the stadium at an Oakland A’s game, he found himself reminiscing about the players of his youth. He thought about opening packs of baseball cards, and the enjoyment that came from learning all he could about his cardboard heroes. That got him wondering where those players are now. So he tracked down a 30 year old pack of 1986 Topps Baseball Cards and set out on a cross country journey to find and interview each of the players inside. He documented the road trip and is sharing it with us all in The Wax Pack which is available for order on Amazon and other local booksellers.

One of questions I recently received was “How do you go about sorting these large collections you buy?”
The answer really depends on a couple things. First of all, what is your end goal? How you sort is dependent on how you collect or how you sell. Do you sell on COMC, eBay Sportlots? Do you sell singles or primarily put together sets and player/team lots? Those are the types of things you need to be thinking about when coming up with a sorting strategy.
For me, I sort into 6 main categories.
1) COMC - Cards estimated to sell for $1 -$20
2) eBay - Memorabilia, complete sets, and single cards $20 and up
3) Sportlots - base and inserts
4) Card Show - junk wax stars, local team players, hot stars
5) Personal Collection - What cards or sets do I want to set aside to keep for my own collection
6) Bulk - everything else goes into a big lot to sell on Facebook Marketplace

Things to Consider for some quick wins:
1) Identify cards to submit that can be listed for $1-$20 on the site and still be the lowest listed.
2) Start by sending 100-200 cards so that the upfront processing cost is manageable and sales from the first submission can be used to cover the cost of future submissions.

This podcast discusses both the hobby and business sides of collecting. In Episode 13, I thought I’d take a few minutes to discuss the business side!
Listen as I breakdown the sources of revenue and whether or not I’m happy with the results. I also cover aspects of my expenses for the month and what the net result is!
My “self-sustaining” goal was accomplished for the month, but you’ll have to listen to hear the details!

I love these promo cards.
Here is the definitive guide to 7-Eleven Cards including checklists to all the sets over the years!
Also, in the show I mention using 16 pocket pages to store and display the coins, but I wanted to mention there are actually 20 pocket pages that work even better!
