087 - Calling in an elk by yourself can be tricky, but it's possible! This wasn't completely a solo elk hunt, but it kind of was. I was able to call in a bull and succeed at harvesting it solo. There are a lot of lessons that were put to good use with this hunt so definitely listen in.

085 - Hunters face unique challenges and obstacles when hunting in crowded public land areas. Game tends to be scarce in public land, it gets moved around a lot. Not just by hunters during season, but by hikers, bikers, off-roaders, birders, backpackers, and other public land users. Keep in mind that most of the people will not be paying attention to noise, or scent, or whether they are skylined and can be seen easily by wildlife. It can be really frustrating when you're watching a group of deer, waiting for the right opportunity only for them to be spooked by a non-hunter.

It was my first time archery elk hunting with a partner, I was lucky enough to have Logan Kendall come with me which was a lot of fun and I learned some stuff from him. 058 - When you’re going on a hunt that is far from home you probably don’t have time to get into the area with boots on the ground because, you know, you’re a normal, working person who doesn’t have unlimited time and PTO to just go into the mountains every time you want. Especially if those mountains are a 5-10 hour road trip… you don’t have time to get away from work and the family just to look around and try to find some animals that you’re not even allowed to kill yet. Your only real option is to e-scout. I’ve come up with a simple 3 step framework that you can follow to e-scout on your own using onX maps and Google earth and I’m going to share as much as I can with you on this episode.

Luckily for me, Utah archery seasons start pretty early so I’ve already been hunting for 5 days at the time of this recording and when this episode comes out I’ll actually already be hunting again for another 5 days - chasing elk with my bow.
A lot of gear questions get answered by just getting out there and using what you have and seeing what works best. But that takes time, and being out in the field. For lots of us, we only get a few days each year to hunt so we need to make it count. 015 - I wounded an animal a few years back and I learned some valuable lessons that I want to share.

You can barely hear my commentary, but I couldn't believe it was still alive when I got to it. You hear my disbelief at the end of the video. It still makes me sick to my stomach thinking about how that deer was suffering.
I hope we can all take a lesson or two from this experience and make ethical shots so animals don't have to suffer unneccessarily.

007 - I almost got thrown in jail on my first out of state hunt. In this episode, I share what happened, and how you can avoid making the same major mistakes I did on my first out of state hunt in Wyoming. Having only hunted in my home state of Utah my whole life, I didn't understand all the laws and almost got in real trouble.
