This conversation between Richard Hill and Deborah Bryon on the Science of Psychotherapy Podcast explores the intersection of analytical psychology, psychotherapy, and Andean shamanism. Bryon shares her journey from traditional psychological training to incorporating mystical and non-ordinary experiences into her practice, particularly through her work with Andean shamanism. They discuss the challenges and insights gained from integrating these diverse frameworks, emphasizing the importance of grounding mystical experiences in somatic understanding and the therapeutic process. The conversation also touches on quantum theory, fractal dynamics, and the role of metaphor in making sense of complex human experiences.

The Practitioner's Guide to the Science of Psychotherapy
Andrew Jamieson trained at the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling and received an MA in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy at Middlesex University. He lectures and writes articles on a series of subjects including psychotherapy’s interconnection with philosophy music and literature. Today we talk with him about his latest book, Midlife: Humanity’s Secret Weapon, where he draws on history, psychology, science and literature, to show just how ubiquitous, and crucial, the ‘midlife crisis’ is, and the devastating consequences for society at large if we continue to regard it as something we can, and should, avoid.
You can find Andrew's book at all the major booksellers, here's a link to his book on Amazon.

We talk to Dr Thomas Verny about the embodied mind. His most recent book, The Embodied Mind: Understanding the Mysteries of Cellular Memory, Consciousness, and Our Bodies, explores very early memory and the mind and sets out to redefine our concept of the mind and consciousness - compiling for the first time, research that points to the mind’s ties to every part of the body and the intelligence of cells. The mind, Verny holds, is fluid and adaptable, embodied but not enskulled.

Investigative journalist Jess Hill puts perpetrators – and the systems that enable them – in the spotlight. Her new book See What You Made Me Do is a deep dive into the abuse so many women and children experience – abuse that is often reinforced by the justice system they trust to protect them. Critically, it shows that we can drastically reduce domestic violence – not in generations to come, but today. Combining forensic research with riveting storytelling, See What You Made Me Do radically rethinks how to confront the national crisis of fear and abuse in our homes.
We talk with Jess and David about this award winning book, the process, the learning, and the very complex problem of domestic violence.

This program is of value to all mental health practitioners including lay practitioners and those seeking self-development. Mirroring Hands is a therapeutic practice that utilizes focused attention to create a state in the client where they are able to process both explicit and implicit experience simultaneously. The practice has emerged from the non-directive hypnotherapeutic style of Milton Erickson, that have been developed since Erickson's death in 1980 by Ernest Rossi.
It is a rapid and gentle form of therapy where the client and the therapist are able to co-create a deep insight into what lies beneath the presenting problem. It is also an approach to therapy that can be applied to all modalities. Client-responsiveness is generated through language styles, a heightened sensitivity of observation and a curiosity for the meanings that can emerge spontaneously in response to our natural human capacity to recover from illness, be it physical and/or mental. The videos include numerous demonstrations and recordings from workshops. The program has a gentle balance of theory and practice.
Our guest today is psychotherapist and author Dr Paul Leslie who has written a number of books on the topic of therapy and healing, the latest of which is all about the art of creating a magical session. Sounds like fun! So Richard and Matt head down to Aiken in South Carolina (well not really, we were in the comfort of our offices in Australia, but it's nice to imagine that we did the trip!) to quiz Paul on what he knows about the science and art of psychotherapy.
You can find out about Paul Leslie and his books at his website https://drpaulleslie.com/

Thedy Veliz created The Parent-Child Neuropsychotherapy Protocol™ that provides a framework to address the complex challenges of working with the entire family when a child is exhibiting emotional and behavioral difficulties by encouraging parents to focus on the neurodevelopmental dynamics (i.e., dysregulation of the stress response system) that the child continues to communicate through the challenges, symptoms and behaviors that are causing relational disruptions rather than trying to eliminate the negative behavior.

Today we talk with film composers Caitlin Yeo and Craig Morgan who are making positive changes for the health and wellbeing of their fellow composers. The statistics demonstrate that this sort of freelance creative work is filled with high level stressors and this is an at-risk population for psychological issues.
Look beyond the specific work these film composers do and you will see that creative freelancers in many industries will be facing the same challenges and demands on their mental wellbeing.
To find out more about Caitlin and Craig's initiatives you can head over to the Australian Guild of Screen Composers Health and Wellbeing page.
You can find Caitlin's homepage here.
You can find Craig's site here.
