Is art’s role to provoke or placate? What happens when it no longer reflects current societal views? These questions and many more were the subject of hot debate when Victor Arnautoff’s thirteen-panel mural “The Life of Washington” became an object of local controversy, then a media firestorm. On display since San Francisco’s George Washington High School opened in 1936, it offers a view of the Founding Father both celebratory and critical, referencing his involvements in slavery and Native American genocide. (The Iroquois dubbed him “Town Destroyer.”) But some present-day students, parents, and observers found those depictions racially offensive, calling for the work to be removed or destroyed. Would doing so be a “redaction of history,” “identity politics gone off the rails”—or a justified blow to a lingering American “colonized mentality” as well as ongoing “traumatization” of young minds? San Francisco lawmakers and health leaders say they’re open to “safe supply,” a controversial drug policy that provides regulated access to narcotics.
The first public indication came at a Board of Supervisors hearing on Thursday, when Department of Public Health behavioral health director Hillary Kunins said that the city is looking to broaden access to medically assisted treatment for people suffering from drug dependency. Kunins pointed to Canada and Switzerland, which offer prescription opioids—including heroin and fentanyl—in an effort to stabilize the drug supply and destigmatize drug use.
The health department is looking to the federal government to change laws around the practice, said Kunins.
“In other countries like Canada, like Switzerland, there’s a wider range of medications that are actually from the opioid class that have been found to reduce a person’s use of illicit opioids and to reduce the risk of overdose,” Kunins said on Thursday.
The practice is illegal federally in the U.S. But in subsequent interviews with The Standard, local legislators said they were open to the idea of “safe supply.”
State Senator Scott Wiener, who authored safe consumption legislation recently vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom, told The Standard that he would support a “well run” safe supply program as long as it’s paired with strong access to treatment.
“We know the goal is to try to get people to use less or to stop entirely,” Wiener said. “I think if it’s done well [safe supply] can be very helpful in keeping people healthy and reducing drug dealing.”
Withdrawal medications such as buprenorphine and methadone are already legal in the U.S. when prescribed for opioid addiction, and advocates on both sides of the drug policy debate have come out in support of utilizing medication-assisted treatment. But the idea of government-regulated narcotics in San Francisco has its critics.

Oakland city officials and school district leaders held a press conference on Thursday morning to answer questions about a school shooting in the East Oakland hills on Wednesday afternoon that injured six people—including two who sustained critical injuries—and sent shockwaves throughout the city and Oakland’s school community.
A number of questions remain about the shooting, including how many shooters there were, their motivations for the attack, and the exact identities of the victims.
But important details emerged that help to paint a picture of the tragedy, some gleaned from surveillance video now being reviewed by the Oakland Police Department.
The schools and campus
The shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rudsdale High School building on the King Estates campus, which houses three schools: Rudsdale, Sojourner Truth Independent Study, and BayTech charter school, a 6th-to-12th grade school.
Rudsdale is an alternative school that serves newcomer students who have recently immigrated to the U.S. and older students who are at risk of not graduating from traditional high schools.
The Rudsdale campus will be closed indefinitely until the damages from the shooting are repaired, OUSD spokesman John Sasaki said.

Police believe the shooters came to the campus to target a specific person or people, but that the six victims were not the intended targets.
All of the victims were 18 or older, confirmed Oakland Police Department Chief LeRonne Armstrong. They included two students, one counselor, a security guard, and two others who worked at the school. Police did not divulge the victims’ ages. By Thursday morning, three victims had been released from the hospital. Two are still in serious condition, and one is in stable condition.

In response to recent power outages for more than 30,000 households and two San Jose hospitals, San José Mayor Sam Liccardo proposed that if PG&E does not present a plan for immediate replacement or repair of the company’s failing infrastructure, the City seek a court injunction or Public Utility Commission (PUC) order mandating PG&E to do so.
“I have deep concerns about the safety of our residents and the viability of San José small businesses struggling against ongoing failures of a power grid hampered by poor maintenance and outdated equipment,” said Liccardo. “The march of climate change will continue, but other California cities subjected to far worse heat do not suffer the rate of power outages as the City of San José. Our residents’ health and safety depend on a reliable grid, and PG&E has an obligation to provide that to San José ratepayers.”
In a frustrating and menacing replay of August 2020, fears of heat-induced rolling blackouts resulting from insufficient load capacity statewide did not materialize this week, but nearly 100,000 San José residents were left in the dark anyway. That is, San José residents suffered from the failure of PG & E’s local distribution infrastructure—primarily blown transformers. These failures shut down power to more than 30,000 households. Three hospitals-- Valley Medical Center, Regional, and O’Connor--lacked without power for several hours, and failures of backup generators at Valley Med caused a loss of air conditioning, lighting equipment, and computer access.
In some East San José neighborhoods—such in the retail area around Tully and King—residents reported that the power outages also took down cellular networks operated by AT&T, rendering cellular customers helpless to make a phone call or send a text to seek assistance.
Liccardo continued, “This is unacceptable. We need to better understand why these failures disproportionately afflict PG&E’s operations in San José. More importantly, and we need to get them fixed—whether PG&E does so voluntarily, or under judicial or regulatory mandate. We can no longer merely hope that PG&E will live up to its obligation to San José ratepayers to do so. “

NASA aims to get its Artemis 1 moon mission off the ground this weekend despite a recent glitch.
The agency announced today (Aug. 30) that it's now targeting Saturday (Sept. 3) for the launch of Artemis 1, a crucial mission whose first liftoff attempt on Monday (Aug. 29) was scuttled by a technical issue.

The legal fight between former President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice escalated Friday morning when the DOJ released a detailed inventory of the documents seized in last month's Mar-a-Lago raid.
The inventory list comes following an order from Florida Federal Judge Aileen M. Cannon, who is deciding whether to appoint a "special master" to the case.
On "America Reports" Friday, former Attorney General Bill Barr criticized Trump's push for a "special master" as a distraction from the details of the case and argued it is not likely to be granted.

The Western U.S. is in the grips of an extended heat wave with temperatures today in many areas in the 110 degree range. It will get even hotter through Sunday before slowly dropping again. But temperatures are expected to stay above 100 degrees in many areas through next Wednesday. Governor Gavin Newsom is addressing the state today on the response to what could end up being a heat emergency. The state is warning energy conservation measures will probably be ordered to prevent blackouts. Flex Alerts, as they are called, would call on Californians to turn up their thermostats and to not run appliances from 4 to 9pm to reduce demand on the electrical grid. Cooling enters are opening and schools are getting creative to help students -- especially in older schools that don’t have air conditioning.

In 2019, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Department of Homeland Security began recovering illegal machine gun conversion devices imported from China. Soon, they would also be printed on 3D printers.
Under the NFA, the devices themselves—small, innocuous-looking, inexpensive, easy-to-install switches—are illegal, even when not installed on a firearm. However, when installed, they convert a semi-automatic pistol into an illegal, fully automatic machine gun capable of firing dozens of rounds in just a few seconds.
The threat these illegal machine guns pose is real. They have been used to murder police and have also shown up in mass shootings.

A New York Times report has found a dangerous, and sometimes deadly, training culture with some candidates using performance-enhancing drugs to get an edge. Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL, or BUD/S for short, is notorious for having one of the highest rates of failure in the US military, a grueling mental and physical ordeal that only the most resilient enrollees can withstand -- only 15-30% of recruits who start the program will complete it. The program has attracted controversy for recent deaths, and the discovery that recruits were using performance-enhancing drugs to face the challenges of SEAL training. In February, one recruit died and another was hospitalized after Hell Week. US Navy Seaman Kyle Mullen died February 4, and his death was officially listed as bacterial pneumonia — he had been coughing up blood for days, the Times reported. When the Navy gathered Seaman Mullen’s belongings, they discovered syringes and performance enhancing drugs in his car. The captain in charge of BUD/S immediately ordered an investigation, and soon about 40 candidates had either tested positive or had admitted using steroids or other drugs in violation of Navy regulations.

n an interview with the Washington Post, Greg Norman said Tiger Woods was offered a gargantuan deal to join LIV Golf.
Norman, who serves as the CEO for the Saudi-based golf league that launches this week, was profiled by the Washington Post’s Kent Baab. In the piece, Baab notes that LIV Golf representatives pitched the fledgling circuit to Woods’ representatives. According to Norman, the offer was “mind-blowingly enormous.”

The Justice Department on Monday charged the head of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, and four other leaders with seditious conspiracy in the January 6 US Capitol attack, escalating the criminal case against the far-right extremist group.
These are the most aggressive charges brought by the Justice Department against the Proud Boys, and are the first allegations by prosecutors that the group tried to oppose by force the presidential transfer of power.Tarrio and his co-defendants previously pleaded not guilty to an earlier slate of charges.
The new indictment adds fresh details about what Proud Boys leaders said on January 6, 2021. Prosecutors accuse the five defendants of working together to intimidate members of Congress and law enforcement and prompt them to flee, thereby preventing them from performing their official duties.

Arnulfo Reyes, a teacher at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, shared his heartbreaking story of being in the classroom during the mass shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead last month. On Tuesday, he told Good Morning America that all 11 of his students were killed in front of him.
Reyes, who is undergoing multiple surgeries after suffering two gunshot wounds on May 24, detailed the horrific day, saying they were watching a movie in the classroom after attending an awards ceremony earlier that morning when they heard the gunfire. “‘Let’s go ahead and get under the table. Get under the table and act like you’re asleep,'” he recalled telling his students, repeating the protocol they had learned during previously training for mass shooting situations.

An illegal immigrant who has been deported five times was sentenced on Monday to time already served over a federal weapons charge related to his acquittal of murder in the 2015 shooting death of San Francisco woman Kate Steinle.
Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate is facing deportation to his native Mexico after a federal judge in California sentenced him to the seven years he has already spent in jail — bringing an end to the case that sparked a firestorm over immigration and sanctuary cities.
“If you return to this country again and you are back in front of me, I will not spare you. Let this be your last warning: Do not return to this country,” US District Judge Vince Chhabria said during his sentencing hearing.
Steinle, 32, was shot dead while she was walking along San Francisco’s crowded Pier 14 with her dad and a friend on July 4, 2015.
Garcia-Zarate, who was in the US illegally and had already been deported five times, admitted to accidentally firing the gun.
He said he’d found it under a bench, but didn’t know it was a firearm because it was wrapped up in a T-shirt. The gun fired when Garcia-Zarate picked it up and officials said the bullet ricocheted off the ground before striking the victim.

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack is set to hold public hearings in June. Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson told reporters to expect at least 8 hearings. "We'll tell the story about what happened. We will use a combination of witnesses, exhibits, things that we have -- to the tens of thousands of exhibits we've interviewed and looked at as well as the hundreds of witnesses we deposed or just talked to in general," Thompson said. He added that the panel will re-invite House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy and other Republicans linked to the Jan. 6 conversations inside the Trump White House to cooperate with their investigation "before the week is out."

Man accused of grooming more than 100 children online across world, Sacramento sheriff sayst
A 24-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after a months long investigation revealed he had been posing as a young girl to speak with other dozens of children on the internet to get them to produce child sexual abuse material, Sacramento County officials said.
Demetrius Carl Davis was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on charges relating to lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, jail records show. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office in a video release said more than 80 victims were identified across the United States and there may be several more internationally.
Davis is believed to have used the moniker "Lizzy" to lure children and groom them, the sheriff's office said.
"After establishing a relationship with the child, Davis would direct them to produce child pornography, depicting themselves engaging in sexual acts with their siblings and other children known to them," Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesperson Rodney Grassmann said in the video release.
The sheriff's office said its Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force began investigating after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about an online account suspected of uploading child sexual abuse material online.
Investigators searched Davis' home in Sacramento County on Dec. 1, 2021, the sheriff's office said. There, several screen recordings were found on Davis' digital devices showing children "engaged in sexual acts." This included his phones and numerous social media accounts he used to communicate with children.
The sheriff's office said it has identified more than 80 children, their ages typically ranging from 6 to 13 years old, across the country as victims. And with the estimated 15 other children Davis is believed to have communicated with in other parts of the world, the sheriff's office said the Department of Homeland Security is assisting with that part of the investigation.
The sheriff's office believes Davis has communicated with "well over 100 children" between late 2020 and December 2021.
The sheriff's office is encouraging parents and guardians to check their children's devices to see if they have been contacted by a "Lizzy." If they have, investigators would like you to call them at 916-874-3002 or email ICAC@sacsheriff.com.
Davis is not allowed to post bail and will be due in court this Thursday.

President Biden's proposed new $33 billion aid package is set to bring massive ongoing support for the Ukrainian military as well as setting up long-term economic assistance for the country. Although the president called on Congress to approve the aid package as quickly as possible, it could take some time to pass with a weeklong congressional recess coming up. And with only $250 million in drawdown funds remaining for Ukraine, there are questions over just how long Ukraine can last without a new aid package. It also remains to be seen if Ukraine funding will be tied to COVID-19 relief funding, with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki saying the White House won’t dictate how they’re passed. "We're not making a predetermination of that from here. We put forward both of these funding requests today because they're both vital, she said. “We need them both to help the Ukrainians and to help ensure we're continuing our COVID programs here in this country and around the world.”

Pat welcomed Dr. Jackie Copeland — who had roles as chief operating officer for both Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology — launched the WISE Fund last year after eye-opening visits to see the damage climate change has done to the Great Barrier Reef and the Kuranda Rainforest in Australia. She decided to put the network she had built through her long career to work helping the planet — WISE stands for Women Invested to Save Earth — by supporting African-descent, Indigenous, women of color who are working on eco-health solutions to climate change that also help disadvantaged communities around the world.
But she also channeled some of the past year’s turmoil into art, working on “Blachant,” a studio album of avant-garde jazz music under the name Bouvier. The title comes from her jazz chant vocal style, which she called blachanting. The first single, “Brown Baby,” was released Tuesday on Spotify and other streaming channels, with sales supporting WISE Fund and the Black Philanthropy Month program.

Two days before the assault on the U.S. Capitol, Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano, a Republican, said supporters of then-President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud were basically in a “death match with the Democrat Party.”
A day later, right-wing activist Alan Hostetter, a staunch Trump supporter known for railing against California’s virus-inspired stay-at-home orders, urged rallygoers in Washington to “put the fear of God in the cowards, the traitors, the RINOs, the communists of the Democrat Party.”
The shared grammatical construction — incorrect use of the noun “Democrat” as an adjective — was far from the most shocking thing about the two men’s statements. But it identified them as members of the same tribe, conservatives seeking to define the opposition through demeaning language.
