It is a snowy Christmas Day here in Montreal Canada. I wanted to wish you happy holidays - hope you’re taking some time off to recharge and relax as we approach 2023!
Our guest today is Marlo Johnson. Marlo is a phenomenal artist and author of 2 books: Creative Alchemy: Meditations, Rituals, and Experiments to Free Your Inner Magic and Create Now!: A Systematic Guide to Artistic Audacity. Her art is an exploration of the relationship between consciousness and physicality. She creates as a reminder to bring herself back into states of positivity and she offers her art to others as a similar inspiration: a way to propagate and normalize peace, compassion, joy, and feminine power. Each painting is meant to be used as a tool for meditation and the awakening of a particular state of being. In her words: “sit with it, quiet your mind, and observe how it makes you feel.” We’re gonna touch on a lot of these points - you’re gonna notice even the tone of this talk is more serene and calming. That’s because I spent a good amount of time observing her works before the recording!
You can find her works on Superrare, Foundation and OpenSea.

I just got back from Paris where I attended Ledger Open. Fantastic event and great announcement from the team with their new hardware wallet - the Ledger Stax which I just minted. I’m so happy I got to meet and chat with the CXO of the company who happens to be the guest of today’s episode - Mr Ian Rogers.
Ian has had quite the parkour career-wise to say the least. He’s worked in music tech since the mid 90s and built some of the earliest music-related websites. Throughout the years, he’s worked with a wide variety of companies: some OG ones such as Winamp to behemoths like Yahoo! as well as Apple after they acquired Beats Music - where he served as chief executive. At Apple, he spearheaded the iconic brand into music streaming services by successfully launching Apple Music (you might have heard of it). Seeking a new challenge shortly after, Ian joined the LVMH group as Chief Digital Officer with the intention of developing the luxury conglomerate’s online retail presence. After 5 transformative years at LVMH, Rogers announced his new position (and current position) at Ledger as Chief Experience Officer. Ian is a real rockstar at heart. I got so much wisdom and insight talking to him. We go deep into user experience, adoption, his vision for what Ledger will bring in the coming years. True to his music background, we also talk about vinyl collecting and much more. I had such a blast recording this. Ian is a genuine, curious, passionate but most of all compassionate human being with a wealth of knowledge.

Forr today’s episode, I had my good friend Zar as well as his wife Martyna (MAR) on the show. Zar is a multi-medium artist. He’s been working in commercial photography for more than 15 years and he is the creator of Classicality: a 1,000 unique 1/1 NFT collection. Each NFT is digitally hand drawn with an emphasis on minimalistic lines, shapes, and colors. ZAR and MAR are both working together on the project. On her side, Martyna wears many hats: she takes care of the market research, helps with community management and advises on the overall marketing direction for Classicality.
Our discussion covered topics such as minimalism, balancing work, life and creativity, community building, IRLs, working with your significant other and much more.

Flyfish Club Founders: David Rodolitz & Conor Hanlon – Launching A Member's Only Restaurant Where Membership is Purchased as an NFT | Martin Hyu Show Ep.22
Excited for another episode today as I get to receive not one but two amazing guests: David Rodolitz and Conor Hanlon from Flyfish Club. For those of you who are not familiar with this project, it’s a private dining club where membership is purchased on the blockchain as an NFT. That means that the only way to get into FFC is to hold the token or come with someone that has the NFT.
David Rodolitz who is CEO of FFC has been in the New York City hospitality industry for 20+ years. He’s owned and operated various food & beverage establishments, from James Beard nominated restaurants, to fast-casual concepts, iconic bars and nightlife venues.
Conor who is EVP of Operations has worked in some of the best restaurants in the country and found himself alongside legends such as Daniel Boulud on several different projects. He worked his way from a line cook to Chef De Cuisine of Michelin Star Restaurant, DB Brasserie. He was the Culinary Director for NoHo Hospitality and moved to NYC in 2015 to join the corporate Team which oversees 17 Restaurants in the US.
The 2 other founders are: Gary Vee and Chef Josh Capon. Gary (chairman of FFC) is a serial entrepreneur, marketing legend, all-time operator and inspiration to many. Josh (Chief culinary officer for FFC) is a highly decorated celebrity chef and television personality.
Being from the restaurant industry, I definitely enjoyed this episode as so many points hit home for me. We cover a wide gamut of topics relating to Flyfish Club. We dive into their mindset and perspective relating to hospitality, community building, NFTs and much more.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. If you can take an extra 10 to 30 seconds to share your thoughts and review the podcast, it would mean the world to me :)

La Leyenda: An Authentic Mezcal Made From 100% Full Term Blue Agave | Martin Hyu Show Ep.21
For today’s episode, my guests are Alex Sanchez and Tom O’Malley. They have been working on an absolutely mind blowing 100% Full Term Blue Agave Mezcal called "La Leyenda” - which won the Double Gold medal in 2021 SF WINE & SPIRITS blind taste competition.
The ethos of the project is to produce an agave spirit without any compromise and to push back against the mass marketing of these plants which inevitably leads to cutting corners. Just to give you an idea: Blue Agave plants take 6-7 years to mature, and yet many companies harvest early around 3-4 years while supplementing with additives. La Leyenda really sees it through the 7 years to get the highest possible quality while preserving the craft. They call it NFT (Now Full Term).
They are launching the spirit as an NFT project where the only way to buy the bottles is to hold the token itself.
If you know little or are an amateur tequila / mezcal drinker like myself - you’ll learn a lot from the deep knowledge that these two have. And if you’re an aficionado, you’ll definitely get to appreciate the craft and passion that goes into this product.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. If you can take an extra 10 to 30 seconds to share your thoughts and review the podcast, it would mean the world to me :)

Treasure Hunting with Phraze: His New NFT Project Called Phrazeboard | Martin Hyu Show Ep.17
My guest today is an artist that I highly admire: he goes by the name of Phraze and on this episode we got to talk about a wide variety of topics: from launching a project, taking action, to accumulating skillsets and making connections. We tackle a lot of areas that are useful to both artists and entrepreneurs. Phraze has a very distinctive style which he calls word art: blending calligraphy and visual art. Over the years, he’s done commissioned work for celebrities like Tony Robbins, Gary Vee and many more. We actually recorded this podcast a couple of weeks back but since NFT NYC came along, my timing and schedule got thrown off. I thought it wouldn’t have taken as much time, but NFT NYC was really packed with events. Nevertheless it was a heck of a fun time but it is good to be back and great to finally release this episode. Talking with Phrase about his new project called Phrazeboard was a blast and I hope you get to enjoy this talk as much as I did recording it.

Just a short recording on the idea of "living out of intent" instead of "living out of habit."
This episode is a #101 kind of audio experience.
Here's what you'll learn:
What is a hashtag and why should you use it?
A hashtag (symbol: #) is a way for social platforms such as Instagram to organize content and distribute it to right the people. You can either use hashtags to discover content or to contribute to an already existing conversation.
In this sense, hashtags can serve a variety of purposes if you use them well. And by using them well, we mean adding value to the conversation. This can’t be stressed enough. The north star of your social media approach should always be to deliver more value than you take. This is the only way that you’re going to create a loyal engaging community.
Using hashtags properly will:
-Boost your engagement
-Grow your audience by reaching the right people
-Form relationships, build trust and loyalty with your following. (Discover related accounts that you can interact with Creating or tapping into an existing community)
That sounds great and all, but you might be wondering…
How do you find the best hashtags?
There is no secret formula for this. You have to become a practitioner and spend time researching/testing. Some people like to use apps that claim to gather the most popular hashtags. We personally like to use the IG app to discover which hashtags are more relevant to our posts.
Keep in mind that the more popular a hashtag is, the harder it is to rank in it. When you’re first starting off, it’s better to go for tags that are specific to your niche. Doing so will give you a better chance of becoming relevant in that tag and hitting the explore feed.
You can use a maximum of 30 tags, but we recommend that you refrain from using too many. Based on our data at the agency, you can use up to 9 tags before seeing a dip in engagement.
We recommend starting with one or two and adding more as you go in order to measure which hashtags bring you the most impressions/reach. You can tap into the insights that are available in the Instagram app if you have a business account. Setting up a business account is a piece of cake. Just create a Facebook page and link it to your IG account.
Understanding the end goal of hashtags:
Too often do we see people using popular hashtags just to get more likes. Don’t fall into vanity metrics. It does no good for your account. Don’t sacrifice long term upside for short term likes. You’re better off using tags that are relevant to your niche to cultivate meaningful conversations.
Most generic tags are targeted by automated accounts that use third-party apps to like, comment, follow/unfollow. You don’t want to add tags like #follow, #followme, #likeforlike because you'll get low quality engagement. The goal is and will always be to interact with real people in order to create strong communities.
Now that we’ve defined what hashtags are, what purpose they serve and how to find the best ones, let’s dive into the different types of #.
Branded Hashtags
The easiest way to categorize your content is to use a hashtag unique to your brand. People will be able to find your content by searching for that specific hashtag. When you’re first starting off the hashtag won’t bring you that much traffic since nobody actually knows about it. But in the long run having your posts tagged accordingly will help people discover your content.
Service/Product Hashtags
Regardless of your industry, your business probably offers a range of products and/or services. Hashtags relevant to a particular product can help narrow the search and give customers easier access to specific information that they may be looking for. Think of this approach as a way to sub-categorize a post. Brands can use both branded and product hashtags in a single post.
Community Hashtags
You can think of this one as an extension of the branded hashtag. Community tags serve as gateways to engage with your audience and get them to talk about your brand on social media. For example, Nike has its original branded hashtag #nike but the community uses #mynikes to showcase how they rock their sneakers. Getting your audience to participate in user-generated content can help strengthen the brand and increase loyalty over time.
Using this type of tag can help create a sense of camaraderie around the brand and potentially facilitate the interactions between like-minded community members. Ideally, as the brand, you should also engage in the community hashtag to show appreciation and contribute to the conversation.
Campaign Hashtags
Whether you’re doing a traditional marketing campaign or a quick giveaway, hashtags can be extremely helpful when it comes to tracking community engagement and campaign entry. Campaign tags have a start and end date. Making one can be as simple as your brand hashtag + giveaway. From that point, it’s easy for you and your marketing team to stay on top of social conversations and pick a winner.
Event Hashtags
In case of special events such as conferences, the organizers can prompt attendees to post about the gathering. This helps create conversations around the event and give the brand an opportunity to engage in questions that participants may have. It’s an efficient way to build connection and spread brand awareness.
Trending Hashtags
A great way to gain exposure for your brand is to jump on a trending hashtag. Be careful with this as it can backfire if you are not prepared to deal with the conversations that might unfold. Make sure that your brand is actually a good fit for the hashtag.
Holiday Hashtags
Anything related to holidays such as #newyear, #halloween can be an opportunity for your brand to express a different side of your culture. As always, make sure that the context is relevant to your audience. Don’t just jump onto the bandwagon if your brand doesn’t actually seem like it would celebrate the holiday. Using culturally relevant hashtags can help your brand gain more exposure in search results.
All in all, we’ve talked about using hashtags from a standpoint of bringing exposure to your content. Don’t forget however that hashtags are not just for people to discover you. You can and should use them to tap into an existing community.
Social media isn’t just about talking. It’s also about listening.
Make sure you don’t neglect the importance of jumping into conversations that are already happening. One of the best ways to grow your audience is to participate in an already existing community.
