There are some people in the world that have a magical ability to see a gap in the world and fill it with just the right thing. That’s what today’s guest, Joanna Waterfall, did when she founded Yellow Co - an organization birthed from an idea that struck her one day while she was in the shower. Joanna believes that creativity, business, community and social impact should all go hand in hand. So she decided to create a platform and community that brought all of those things together. She’s here to share her personal story of separating her worth and value as a human being from her professional achievements, which she did the hard way!

Joanna and her work have been featured in publications such as Forbes, The Huffington Post, Darling Magazine, The Good Trade, LA Lady Magazine, Bossladies Magazine, and more. She’s motivated by the belief that women can change the world through stepping out of fear and into who they were created to be - and, well, that’s exactly what we talk about here so Joanna, at the brave files.

Connect with Joanna on Instagram and find Yellow.com on Instagram and their website.

Creative • Healing • Necessary

Trauma is passed down, via DNA, from generation to generation. And we’ve learned that it affects us in so many, previously unknown, ways. It’s something we know, conceptually, happens but we haven’t been able to really say how or why. Today’s guest, Sharon Tubbs, dives deep into this by writing about her family history, specifically her grandfather Israel Page in her new book “They Got Daddy.”

This candid and heart-centered conversation is one that helps bring healing and humanity to all of us, across whatever divides us. It’s honest, compassionate, and important.

Sharon Tubbs began her professional career as a newspaper reporter and editor. In a career that spanned seventeen years, she worked briefly for the Philadelphia Inquirer and then for the Tampa Bay Times. As a journalist, she covered various beats, including small-town government, local crime, and national religious issues. Today, Sharon is a writer, inspirational speaker, and the owner of Move Forward Communications. She’s also the director of a nonprofit organization that empowers underserved residents in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to live healthier lives.

TOP TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:

  • Sharon felt called to write the story about her Grandfather’s experience in Alabama in the 1950s.
  • They Got Daddy is about Sharon’s grandfather being kidnapped by the KKK when he dared to sue a white man in Alabama over a tragic accident that left him unable to work.
  • Unless we tackle our history we are not truly able to heal.
  • History allows us to speak truth, process, and heal.
  • Not everyone wants to heal or dig through the trauma to get to the other side.
  • The biggest surprise during this process was self-forgiveness.
  • Being “colorblind” is basically a free pass to stick your head in the sand and pretend terrible things didn’t happen and are not, currently, happening.
  • When people have to rearrange their life based on what might happen, it leads to internalized fear and trauma.
  • Most of the pushback Sharon experiences is in the nonprofit community.
  • When we know better we are obligated to do better.
  • Celebration for Sharon is relaxing and reading. Finding time to do what she wants!

Tune in as Heather chats with her Human Design Mentor, Kyla Derkach.

In 2017, I moved to Kyla Derkach to Spain from Canada entirely alone. She didn’t speak the language and had never even traveled there before. Kyla says she was lost at the time, but this adventure helped her find herself and, eventually, her husband. This also led to her starting her own business, Hatha Astro serving ambitious leaders worldwide, helping them align with their unique signature to create more income and impact through Human Design and Astrology.

Kyla's story is about learning who we really are, at a DNA level and then learning to TRUST who we really are.

Episode Takeaways:

  • Studied initially business management but was always adventurous, loved to travel, and wasn’t afraid to travel alone.
  • CBT Vietnam Documentary. Watch it here.
  • Wine grapes tell a story about the culture.
  • Kyla moved to Spain because she needed to learn a new language for her job.
  • Learning Spanish was total immersion while teaching English to local children.
  • Although Kyla had an interest in Spiritual work (Human Design and Astrology) it wasn’t front and center until she got to Spain.
  • Eventually, hiding from her internal reality and pain caught up with her and she had to explore it.
  • She “came out” of the spiritual closet in Spain.
  • She had no idea where or how to start but felt a deep “yes” and went for it.
  • Trusting the unknown and the path - it works.
  • Through learning what doesn’t work we begin to understand what does work.
  • Kyla grounds herself with a weighted blanket, a lavender eye pillow, and crystals and being still.
  • It’s about devouring each moment with intention.
  • Word of the year: Simplicity - Intentionality, minimalism, creating spaciousness physically and mentally, shorter to-do lists. Taking in simple nourishment.
  • Celebration: Self-care, connection with others, spicey margarita.
  • Just because the moon isn’t at its fullest expression doesn't mean it’s not there.

Erin Dihel often found herself angry and frustrated as a kid because she lacked a tremendous amount of control over her life … Enter the idea that making peace with others (and then, consequently with herself) WAS within her control! Erin has a creative approach to making peace, finding creative ways to make things work, and how to enhance the human experience.

  • Erin moved a lot due to her father’s job
  • Felt big feelings, got really angry and took it out on her mom
  • People pleasing is a form of manipulation
  • Humor was a way to connect but also a way to disassociate
  • Humor was a way to be seen
  • The process of healing takes a long time
  • When Erin gets tense she asks herself “What do I need to put down? This is too heavy.”
  • Every odd job and experience taught me something that lead to what I am doing right now. There’s always a lesson.
  • Erin piloted an improv leadership program for United Airlines and that launched her business.
  • The “great pause” was the first time Erin ever rested. It was a mess but also a gift.
  • Even when business is slow - stay top of mind so you can be top of mind when people are ready.
  • When a group of people take off their invisible masks and allow themselves to play, connect and be vulnerable it changes the world.
  • It’s all about enhancing the human experience.
  • Celebration: No Risk, No Champagne
  • CHARITY: Girl Forward and Girls Rock!

Respect • Autonomy • Grace

Justice is not always compassionate but there is still compassion at the root of our human existence. We may not be able to see the growth and change in the moment - but it’s there.

The world has often made today’s Jule Arney feel less-than, wrong, and broken. As a Black, queer, neurodivergent person Jule has had to combat these external narratives that have, unwittingly, taken seed and rooted subconsciously.

The struggles that result from this type of lived experience cannot be understated and yet, Jule now lives an OUTLOUD LIFE that helps others see themself for the magic they are - AS IS and Jule helps these folks CHOOSE TO LIVE! Jule moved around a lot and had lots of different experiences.

Episode Takeaways

  • Thankful for consistent parents who prioritized their children’s safety
  • It’s a journey to be associated with beauty and believe it
  • Church was a very important of Black culture but that meant being surrounded by homophobia
  • It took Jule three times to come out to their parents
  • Being rejected by their family, lead Jule to want to end their life.
  • Jule is a lifelong “overachiever” who believed that if they were perfect in every other way, it would be enough.
  • In 2006 Jule decided to take their boyfriend to prom and met great resistance but they did get to attend prom together.
  • Denying myself consistently drove Jule closer to ending
  • Always be a person who ask questions
  • Rely on your social network and let people in
  • Focus on the “small little things” that make you the wonderful person you are
  • Celebration for Jule is spending quality time with friends
  • CHARITY: The healing wellness foundation (in Pittsburgh)
  • “The more I have allowed myself to step into the opulence of my truth, the more others around me have begun to see that same light within themselves.”
  • “Be the person that you needed”
  • "There is too much you have left to do, too much impact you will have for yourself, your community, the world."
  • “I chose to know my truth. To know myself enough to demand respect from everyone else.”

CHANGE • QUESTIONS• BOUNDARIES

When TikTok brings us together. This week I'm chatting with Quinn The Eskimo (ok, that's not his real name but it's his NEW name and over here we respect folks name preferences!). Quinn joined me to talk about totally transforming his super religious, conservative life by changing one, somewhat, simple thing: Learning to ask questions. So many questions!

By embracing questions and being open to actually hearing the answers Quinn completely changed his life. He’s a teacher, leader, creator, and guide … he’s afraid but ready for whatever comes next. Connect with him directly via his website andon TikTok.

EPISODE TAKEAWAYS

  • Life is a series of seasons.
  • Season One: His name was John and he was conservative.
  • Stayed in a toxic relationship for a long time. Raised 8 kids.
  • Parenting is such hard work - it becomes your entire identity!
  • Started asking questions, as a conservative Christian, and things stopped adding up.
  • Don’t just believe what you’re told. EXPLORE and learn for yourself!
  • Travel and connecting with new people will open up your heart and mind.
  • Change starts with admitting YOU were wrong (and will likely continue to make mistakes).
  • Boundaries allow you to control who is invited into your life.
  • Lack of control caused serious depression. It was time to surrender and start again, different, healither.
  • Quinn doesn’t want to push people away, he wants to attract them.
  • Surround yourself with positive people who want to help you rise!
  • Learn more, explore more, see more, have more conversations.
  • It’s time to start to think about things in a different way.
  • Question your privilege.
  • It’s not that the things we have are bad, it’s that we evolve and change.
  • The 5am club - it’s time for Quinn to “work” on himself.
  • We have to envision what will happen in order to believe in the possibility and live into the vision.
  • CELEBRATION:  food, nature, music
  • Charity of the week: Goodwill - Their mission is to help people gain skills and get into the workforce.

Courageous • Centered • Responsibility

We often think of fear as something that keeps us small and stuck - it can, in fact, do all of those things. But there’s also the flip side of fear - the empowering side - the brave side. This side of fear informs. It allows you to dig deep into yourself and find ways to heal, grow and prosper. Today I welcome Sarah Hagstrom Join us to talk about her journey through fear and learning to heal her own body through a mind-body approach. She’s determined to make the world a healthier and happier place through her growing health coaching businesses with healthy bottom lines, helping folks establish strong foundations from the start.

Episode Highlights:

  • Do the things that bring you joy, simply for the sake of joy.
  • Don’t miss your joy opportunities!
  • Sarah grew up with a deep seeded fear of “who is going to take care of me? I have to take care of myself.”
  • This fear caused lots of physical ailments.
  • Documentary: Food matters - Changed Sarah’s life.
  • Humans tend to become unconscious around food choices.
  • Community can be created in a lot of ways. Seek those who can help you have the life you most desire.
  • Any behavior (including eating) we do, constantly, as a coping mechanism is unhealthy.
  • Every human is different. What works for one person may not work for someone else.
  • Just like everything else in life, reassessment is important.
  • Don’t just “trust the experts.” You know yourself, trust yourself, and advocate for yourself.
  • Stress and emotions that are left unattended show up as physical issues. Give words to your truth.
  • Check out Journal Speak!
  • All humans have mixed emotions. It’s ok - welcome them all.
  • Our bodies heal when we give them the tools to heal - that is mind, body, and soul.
  • Be compassionate to your fellow humans - you never know what they are experiencing
  • You don’t need to be working non-stop. It’s not about “doing the most” it’s about how you feel!
  • My natural instinct is to use positive words. There’s real work in allowing all thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Obligation • Opportunity • Pride

Tamer Elnoury is not his real name … It’s one of several aliases he’s used throughout his career to infiltrate terror cells across the globe. His job was to decimate al-Qaeda and ISIS from the inside out. To put his arm around some of the worst people on the planet, convince them he was their brother in arms, and then ruin all their plans of death and destruction without them ever knowing he was coming.

Episode takeaways

  • Tamer started off as an undercover narcotics officer
  • He fully admits he was unprepared, filled with biases and preconceived notions. And THAT was dangerous and unsafe
  • It’s very hard to step out of ourselves and see people from their own perspective.
  • 911 became a personal calling for Tamer. He was uniquely positioned to help protect us.
  • This isn’t work you can mess up. There is no room for error.
  • "I had no idea what the radical mindset, the radical world was like."

Electrifying • Gritty • Unrealistic

When Juliana Garcia was growing up she had a lot of questions - and asking those questions often lead to punishment because Juliana was supposed to put her head down, do what she was told, not make mistakes and to never, ever question things.

Today, Juliana is an online entrepreneur with a multimillion-dollar business. She built this business on curiosity. She pioneers a cutting-edge client-centric approach that breaks the old school marketing rules and focuses on selling through intimacy, integrity, strong mindset tools, and zero BS.

  • Forgiveness of self is the real game changer.
  • The most important relationship Juliana has is with her inner child. Now she has her own back.
  • You can be your own cheerleader.
  • Juliana’s “drug of choice” was validation.
  • She grew up with a desire to be understood.

  • Traveling the world gave me the ability to empathize and it changed my life.

In her early 40s, Leah began a profound journey into sexual healing – and you are invited to join her

Leah Carey was subjected to sexual trauma from an early age. Her father’s alcoholic and narcissistic behaviors created extremely confusing messages about sex. As a result, she was left without the tools necessary to build healthy and intimate relationships. She completely lacked the ability to advocate for her own pleasure and claim her own bodily autonomy. Tune in to hear about Leah’s transformative journey where she learned to heal old sexual issues, love her own body, and discover how to truly enjoy all sexual experiences.

Having grown up in a home that was deeply confused and conflicted around sexuality – and with a father who told her she was fat, ugly, and no one would ever love her – Leah spent most of her life in fear of her own femaleness and the trouble it could get her into.

This conversation is wildly brave and given the state of America these days, these conversations need to be had more often, more loudly, and with more reverence for the social impact required to create real and sustainable change.

This Twitter thread (and subsequent interview) happened many years ago and, sadly, it is as important - perhaps even more so - now as it was then. In a country that seems to be barreling backward at warped speed, these conversations are more important than ever.

Andrew Moxon was just a guy who liked Twitter and speaking his mind. Then his thoughts turned him into a powerful force responsible for opening the eyes of people all over the world. He’s a writer who went viral on Twitter after comparing microaggressions of general violence towards women to being “kicked in the nuts.” He’s funny, upfront, and entertaining. And he’s a feminist – At a time when America is rapidly removing all rights for women and other minorities. Andrew chooses to bravely start intense conversations in order to create an atmosphere of change. Tune in to learn that we all have the ability to create powerful impact.

The last couple of years we’ve all been in this strange space where the stress levels are outrageous and yet, our lives have slowed down (at least during stay-at-home orders due to the pandemic). During this time, many of us have learned that “rest” is not all created equal and that each of us requires something different to be our happiest, healthiest self.

Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith is a medical physician who’s also an expert on “Sacred Rest.” After experiencing extreme, personal, burnout, she wrote Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity. Which dives into the seven types of rest needed to optimize your productivity, increase overall happiness, and live the best life possible. Now she’s teaching the next generation of doctors the importance of treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. Tune in to learn about finding harmony between your professional and personal life through the art of intentional rest!

Belated • Transformational • Unapologetic

Have you ever thought “If I do this, will I still be lovable?”

Well, that question get’s even more complicated when the “this” is coming out as Gender Queer. This week's guest is a dear friend of our host, Heather Vickery. Stevie Manns had a moment of clarity where they, finally, realized that they no longer had to accept what was unacceptable to them!

After years of living with “self-inflicted” internalized homophobia, Stevie is now living out loud in an old-school, male-dominated industry. After their own transition, Stevie became a fierce advocate for other Queer and Trans folks in the finance industry.

Top Takeaways:

  • Your voice deserves to be heard. You deserve to take up space!
  • You have the power to be a beacon of light for someone else.
  • It takes a lot of hard work and self-love to move through internalized homophobia.
  • No two people experience gender the same! Gender presentation looks and feels different to everyone.
  • You are still lovable - everyone is lovable. Find your people and hold them close.
  • Your experiences are what create you. Don’t deny your experiences, embrace them and use them for the greater good.
  • Everything happens at its perfect time.

We talk a lot about crowdfunding and raising the money necessary to lift these voices up. If you’re looking to build something - you don’t want to miss this.

Tune in to hear Anna’s story, when apps like The CUBE are so important, and get all the inside scoop.

  • BIPOC and QTPOC voices deserve to be heard, readily available, and easily accessible.
  • There’s always growth when you approach things from the perspective of collaboration over competition.
  • If you see something missing in the world, and you know it would have a powerful impact - BUILD IT YOURSELF!
  • It is important to name people when that's who you want to center, and celebrate.
  • Don’t wait on systems and or capitalism to come along for the ride.
  • It’s time to put money in these creators' pockets!
  • Unless you’re already a big name, podcasting is not going to make you rich. There are real costs associated with producing this content.
  • There is always more work to be done, celebrate anyway. Celebrate every step of the way!

This month The Brave Files Podcast is dedicated to amplifying and sharing Queer voices and to kick the month off we’ve turned the tables on our host, Heather Vickery!

This week fellow podcaster and friend, Pamela Stamper, interviews Heather about how she lives brave in action, how she actually practices what she preaches, and does all of the things that she coaches others to do. Hopefully, the episode will give you a front-row seat to the inner workings of Heather’s life and business.

  • If there is something you desire or are seeking, chances are good that someone else desires it also. We teach what we most need to learn.
  • Slow down, you’ll get there. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
  • Powerful manifesting is all about calling in “this or better.”
  • You get out of things only as much as you are willing to put into them.
  • Trust that the best you can do is the best you can do and it IS enough!
  • Learn to trust your body and listen to it!

Vulnerability • Unleashes • Leadership

Society constantly tells us how we should behave. Charles Matheus joins Heather Vickery to talk about his is a mission to change this narrative. Charles is determined to remain vulnerable, honest, authentic, and freely admit when he steps back into what he calls “the man box.” By leveraging our privilege and connecting with other human beings we’re able to become people and far better leaders.

We’ve all had our brushes with Toxic Mascunality. It’s easy to see how toxic Mascunality is dangerous for women but it’s also a serious danger to men and ll people regardless of gender. And changing it takes a lot of unwiring, unraveling, and retraining all people on what it means to “BE A MAN.”

Our guest this week is Charles Matheus and he’s taking on Toxic Masculinity in a big way… But he calls it “The man box.” Charles uses “the Man Box” because of the negativity association with toxic masculinity. Sometimes, Charles says, we have to find a clever way into a conversation, and using polarizing words (even if they are accurate) won’t help us break through to the group who most needs it.

Charles freely admits that despite all his personal work and growth, he sometimes still finds himself “inside the Man Box.” He tries his best to recognize his behavior, take responsibility for it, and do better.

Charles and Heather tackle weakness, failure, what the hell is a “soft skill” and why does such important stuff has such a pathetic name, imperfection creates honest connection, using our privilege responsibility and using it to support others and what it means to be a true leader … AND SO MUCH MORE.

The founder and "chief birthday enthusiast" for The Birthday Party Project has helped hundreds of children experiencing homelessness celebrate their birthday, many for the first time. By bringing joy, happiness, and celebration into homeless shelters, Paige and her fellow birthday enthusiasts are changing lives. Joy, in fact, changes lives.

Meet Kelly Gordon, entrepreneur, activist, LGBTQ community member, recovering alcoholic, abuse survivor and so much more. Getting an Autism diagnosis at 33 provided Kelly with a lot of answers, but it didn’t fundamentally change who she was and how she, successfully, navigated the world. Kelly learned many coping skills as a young child and she’s used them to communicate and connect in remarkable ways. Her story may change your perspective on a lot of things and will enlighten you!

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

  • Communication is key. We can’t address a problem if we don’t know what the problem is. Writing and talking helps us identify those problems.
  • Invaluable life skills can emerge from our greatest hardships.
  • We feel different things at different times. That’s okay. Just because you used to feel one way about a situation doesn’t mean you have to feel that way forever. And it doesn’t make how you feel now any less valid.
  • It's boring to only hang out with people who think like you. And it doesn’t serve you in the long run.

  • We can’t control the experiences that our children have. We could be the best parents in the world and our children will still go through hardships. Their struggles aren’t necessarily your failures.

  • If we allowed people to show up for us more often, we would be regularly pleasantly surprised.
  • If you decide it’s you against the world, you’re setting yourself up to fail. Developing a company takes a team.
  • We often believe we can succeed because we’ve proved we can succeed. But if we’re doing something new, we don’t have a track record to back us up. That might be scary, and it’s okay to be afraid. It’s possible to be afraid and take the brave leap into uncharted waters anyway.
  • Sometimes the most rewarding things we can do for ourselves come about when we help other people.

  • Too often, people conflate celebration with self-indulgent bragging. In truth, celebration is the act of honestly and earnestly honoring your achievements. It’s an exercise that is entirely worthwhile.
  • We can only achieve our goals one day at a time. The process can sometimes feel achingly slow, but if you trust yourself and trust the process, you will make progress.
  • We all have what Rupaul Charles calls our “inner saboteur.” That’s the voice in your head that tells you that you aren’t worthy or capable of achieving good things. But we also have our “higher self.” Some people call it our gut instinct, our intuition, or Ātman. That’s the voice in your head that guides you where you need to go. Practices like meditation and journaling can help you better tune into that voice.
  • When it’s the right time, you will know it’s the right time.

  • The choice to step back and take care of yourself can be a difficult one. Doing so is brave.

In this conversation, Erin shares how hypnosis can help us see things differently, create new habits, and heal in all sorts of ways. But it doesn’t work unless you WANT it too!

One area that Erin see’s her work really helps is in public speaking and training. Through her work as a hypnotherapist, she helps ease all sorts of anxieties by guiding her clients through all the motions of the day - this has the effect of making clients feel like they have already been through the day and while the practice may not make perfect, but it can definitely make us less anxious.

Top Takeaways

  • The way we see the world shapes our reality. If we change the way we see the world, our reality changes, too.
  • Our brains are ultra-susceptible to suggestion. We can convince ourselves of anything given enough time and effort.
  • Healing begins when you want it to begin.
  • Many event-based anxieties (like testing or public speaking) stem from our unfamiliarity with the process. Erin helps ease these types of anxieties by guiding her clients through all the motions of that day. Practice may not make perfect, but it can definitely make us less anxious.
  • Anxiety, when unaddressed, can manifest into other mental and physical ailments.

FEARLESS • SELF-RELIANT • LOYAL

Allison has experienced tremendous loss and is currently battling cancer and yet, this interview is full of life and joy.

In this truly delightful conversation, Allison and I talk about EMOTIONS - and how they never disappear so pretending they don’t exist causes us way more harm than good. BUT if you allow yourself to really, truly feel emotions as they come, they are less likely to fester. We also talk about the incredible power of helping others which has a magical way of widening our world view and perspective. Oh and one more thing … Everybody can be a writer. All you need to do is start telling the truth.

Top Takeaways

  • Emotions don’t disappear. Bad feelings can’t resolve on their own. If you allow yourself to feel all your emotions as they come, they’re less likely to fester.
  • It’s okay (and encouraged) to write for yourself, rather than for an audience. Not everyone may tell a cohesive story, but anyone can feel the therapeutic benefits of putting their story on paper.
  • Reading other peoples’ stories can help you better understand the world.
  • Having a loving support system can, literally, save your life.

  • Emotions ebb and flow. When you resist that cycle, it has the potential to magnify.

“Accepting responsibility is our biggest resistance. Let go. Accept where you are now, find the appreciation, the lessons learned, and breakthrough so that you can continue to achieve”

Top Takeaways

  • Big things don’t happen in big steps—Big things happen in little steps.
  • Trust and believe in life’s process. You will show up when and where you’re supposed to show up.
  • When you care for yourself, you can better care for everyone else. It is selfish of you to not take care of yourself.

Terry Niemann has suffered several concussions that went undiagnosed and misdiagnosed for YEARS! Through her very painful journey, Terry has discovered ways to prioritize JOY in her life and she wants to help you do the same. In this conversation we uncover some wonderful truths like - - We aren’t invincible, and we don’t have infinite energy. Because of this, it’s okay to prioritize what’s important to you and let everything else take a backseat. You don’t actually HAVE TO BE A SUPERHERO! Getting into this habit will help you build a life that brings you peace and what’s better than that? Also, be kind to yourself! Words matter and the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves affect how we see the world.

Top Takeaways

  • We aren’t invincible, and we don’t have infinite energy. It’s okay to prioritize what’s important to you and let everything else take a backseat, at least until you do what brings you peace.
  • Words matter. The stories we tell ourselves about ourselves affect how we see the world.
  • Always wear your helmet when you bike, skate, or scooter.
  • Concussions often go misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. This is because they don’t show up on hospital scans unless they’re directly linked to a brain bleed or a skull fracture. Also, symptoms of a concussion often arise after your hospital visit.

In this episode we tackle some big-ticket ideas like perception and understanding that our perception creates our realities - therefore, we have the POWER to SHIFT our realities if we choose to do so - this is done by putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations that allow us to learn more about ourselves. Perception also has a tremendous impact on how we see others - we view everything from the perspective of our own experiences.

Finally, we talk about the empowerment we feel when we stop trying to meet other people's standards and expectations. It’s time to decide for YOURSELF what your standards and expectations are. The only person you’re responsible for is yourself. When you choose to be responsible for yourself you are able to be there for others in a much more important and impactful way. As conscious beings, we are able to listen and pay attention to ourselves. This helps us create and maintain good relationships with ourselves and others.

This week we’re talking with educator, Aaron Smith, about the public school system in the United States. There’s no denying that our school systems are deeply flawed and not at all equitable. Aaron, who has 20 years of experience in education, shares his insights on how we can level the playing field and more adequately prepare our children for the real world. He explains how education is more effective as a communal effort. Aaron reminds us that kids don’t care about what you know until they know how much you care. Tune in to learn how community can change education and what role you can play.

One note, We conducted this interview before the world faced a global pandemic. Now teachers and families, across the nation, are struggling to balance it all in an already imperfect educational system. Because of this drastic change, We've invited Aaron to join us for a LIVE conversation to talk about how the pandemic is affecting children, educators, and families and what we, as a community, can do about it. Join me and Dr. Aaron Smith LIVE on Friday, September 4th at 5 pm CST PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A DIFFERENT TIME THAN LISTED IN THE EPISODE * via either The Brave Files Facebook page or our Facebook collective Brave on Purpose.*

The Brave Files welcomes, bestselling author, Dr. Valerie Rein, who believes that discontented women aren’t defective, but are instead experiencing what she calls Patriarchy Stress Disorder. Dr. Valerie explains what that is, how to move through it, and rather than just suffering through life, she teaches you to ask “How good can it get?” And to get into action.

But don’t worry, this conversation is not just for women! Patriarchy Stress Disorder affects everyone regardless of gender because the hyper-masculinity we're experiencing on a global level is detrimental and dangerous to everyone.

Top Takeaways

  • Reframing how you look at trauma can help you move through it.
  • People (women especially) collect and inherit trauma just by existing in our hypermasculine world.
  • Our trauma is traceable. We can find its roots in both our ancestors and in our empathic response to traumas that we see others experience.
  • We can address our trauma through the use of mind-body tools.
  • We need each other to heal.

This episode is full of inspiration nuggets but a few favorites are:

  • We are always saying “Yes” to something and at the same time “No” to something. The question is what you are trying to prioritize.
  • Be the person you want to be now. If you act the way you want to be, someday you will be the way you act.
  • Make a goal slightly bigger than you can achieve and surprise yourself.

Resilience is a learned behavior, friends. Yes, some people are BORN with it - but most people learn it. It’s defined in the dictionary as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness OR the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.

So I ask you this, Brave Listener, how resilient are you? How quickly do you recover when things go wrong? Do you have the ability to spring back into shape? Well, this week’s episode is all about learning to be resilient. And it’s a story of hope!

Author, coach, and Arctic expedition guide (um, how cool is that!?), Heather Thorkelson joins us to talk about growing up wealthy but severely neglected. Neglect is not just for the underprivileged. This is a story about learned resilience and finding the strength you need from within. AS Heather put is Most of our limitations are about how big we choose to dream.

We knew that a special episode of the podcast, dedicated to sharing what we are most grateful for would bring people together. It would remind our listeners and fans to look for the blessings - they are there. Always there, if you bother to look for them. And then there's the sharing. When we share our gratitude we give the people around us permission to feel and express their own gratitude. It gives up perspective and connection. It unites up, lifts us up and gives up hope.

So here's to being grateful and giving yourself the gift of increased happiness and wellbeing. You have more control than you think you do. We promise. Please continue to shelter in place. Stay home and stay safe.
