The Rev'd Alyson Buxton is Rector of the South Wolds Group. With responsibility for 25 churches she presents a perspective on how being a priest shapes the way she goes about doing the many things her role requires of her.
The Very Rev'd Dr Frances Ward is Dean of St Edmundsbury Cathedral and co-editor of 'Fear and Friendship', 'Lifelong learning, theological education and Supervision. Dr Ward presents using material from her upcoming book, 'Why Rousseau was wrong: Christianity and the Secular'. She highlights the importance of doing what we do well and with confidence and challenges us to look again at what we mean by fear of God. The talk comes from her book 'Why Rousseau was Wrong, Christianity and the Secular Soul'
The Rev'd Dr Andrew Davison is Tutor in Doctrine and Assistant Director of Studies at Westcott House as well as the author of books on apologetics, 'For the Parish', 'Lift up your Hearts' and a number of other books. In this short presentation Dr Davison asks the question, 'Are a Christian Priest and another kind of Priest really the same kind of thing?' This talk raises interesting questions about the role of Priests relative to other faiths and the development of the concept of Priest in history.
The Rev'd Dr James Hawkey is Minor Canon and Sacrist at Westminster Abbey. In this short presentation Dr Hawkey explores the state of Ecumenism today, considering progress since the the publication of Michael Ramsey's 'The Christian Priest Today' focussing particularly on bi-lateral dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church.
The Rev'd Dr James Walters is Chaplain and Interfaith Advisor at the London School of Economics. In this short presentation Dr Walters explores the relation to politics, working from Michael Ramsey's 'The Christian Priest Today' and considers its continued relevance in a much changed society and Church.
The Rt Rev'd Steven Croft, Bishop of Sheffield, Ex-Principal of Cranmer Hall, Bishop Steven is responsible on Ministry Council for working towards a common ward and is the Chair designate of Ministry Division's Ministry Council. Bishop Steven and the Rev'd Canon Martin Seeley, Principal of Westcott House, answer questions on shaping the future of training in the Church of England after Bishop Steven presented his paper.
The Rev'd Professor Graham Ward, at the time of the conference Professor of Contextual Theology and Ethics, University of Manchester. Professor Ward began the conference with a paper on the role and challenges of Priesthood in the 21st century setting the scene for the papers and discussions to follow. Questions, Answers and discussion follow the delivery of Professor Ward's paper.
The Rev'd Dr Catriona Laing is Curate at St Barnabas and Christ’s Chapel, Dulwich, Diocese of Southwark. Dr Laing reviews the study of and recommendations reached by missionary Constance Padwick regarding the role of the Anglican Church in Egypt. She considers how the Anglican Church lives out Padwick's recommendations. Finally, she considers what these recommendations have to say about the work of Anglican clergy in the UK.
The Rev'd Dr Karin Voth Harman is curate at King's Cliffe, Bulwick with Blatherwycke, and Laxton, Diocese of Peterborough. Dr Voth Harman starts from the script of the Sound of Music and considers the issues of transference when we call a priest 'Mother'.
The Rev'd Christopher Woods is tutor in Liturgical Formation at Westcott House and Secretary to the Liturgical Commission. Mr Woods speaks on the benefits of Common Worship and encourages delegates to use our liturgical inheritance according to their local needs.
A talk given by Professor Michael Wheeler at the Westcott House Annual Garden Party on Tuesday 19 June 2012. Professor Wheeler talks about his book entitled 'St John and the Victorians', making particular reference to Brooke Foss Westcott's study of the fourth gospel.
