1) Obtain an idea what’s needed for your basic needs during retirement first.
2) Ask, what are your expectations of a retired lifestyle?
3) Determine if some of the "what-ifs" are being addressed? (I.e. long-term care, expected family care giving responsibilities, existing health concerns)

For its eleventh season, the annual Africa World Documentary Film Festival, sponsored by the E. Desmond Lee Professorship through UMSL’s African/African American Studies at the International Studies and Programs office at will take place at the Missouri History Museum. The international festival, which is committed to the promotion of knowledge, life and culture of the people of Africa worldwide, in a Pan-African context through cinema, will feature 24 films from 16 different countries, including South Africa, Norway, Nigeria, South United Kingdom, Brazil, Haiti and the USA during its official opening in St. Louis, MO. After the opening weekend in St. Louis, the festival travels to different venues in US and around the world, including Philadelphia, Ghana, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
The festival selected excellent documentaries submitted by filmmakers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, Central Africa Republic, China, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Italy, Jordan, Liberia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, Uganda, and USA. Jade Harrell with Rachel Winograd, Assistant Research Professor with UMSL, the Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH). She leads an extensive effort called the Opioid Crisis Targeted Response.
The opioid epidemic is hitting a lot of people and families in Missouri with no exception. Last year in Missouri we lost upwards of 900 people. It is the biggest public health emergency of our lifetime.
Looking at the number of people who died of fatal overdose, 2016 was the biggest year in recent history the numbers are rising. Last year, for example, we lost more people from overdose than we lost from gun violence or vehicle accidents or than we lost at the height of the HIV epidemic in the 90s. We lost more people last year alone than we lost in the entirety of the Vietnam War.
Rachel and the organization have been granted 20 million dollars over the course of two years and they're dividing that between prevention treatment and recovery support services. The bulk of dollars are going to treatment. The goal is to close the treatment gap because there are waiting lists of people who are trying to get help and they're told it's three months or it's six months. They also putting funds directly to treatment reimbursement for people who don't have insurance.
So if you're looking for treatment or if you have a family member who's looking for treatment for heroin or painkillers or fentanyl, you can get treatment and you can see treatment programs in your area.

300 military service members and their families will be honored on Tuesday, July 4th at Fair St. Louis at Forest Park. Participants have an opportunity to personally honor and thank them.
Audience participants will receive American flags to wave for the Grand Salute—as the troops and their families wear special 2017 Salute to the Troops t-shirts, provided by Alliance Technologies, and parade to the stage.
Following the ceremony, service members will wear white and blue t-shirts to relax and enjoy the fair festivities and be easily visible to greet and receive well-wishes.

A tiny green exotic wood-boring insect called the emerald ash borer (EAB) is invading the City of St. Louis’ popular ash trees. Since 2002, the EAB has been killing all untreated ash trees in cities they have infested. They burrow into the trees, damage their veins and cut off their water supply. Once dry and brittle, ash trees can fall and damage people and property.
The City of St. Louis Forestry Division takes the EAB problem very seriously and is being proactive before stopping the insect becomes much more difficult, dangerous and costly to manage. It has created a five-year plan that combines the lessons learned from other cities that have been infested by the EAB. unnamed1For instance, several cities decided not to remove their ash trees until they died. Then they realized they could not keep up with the mounting number of dead trees or the cost of removing them.

In this interview, Dr. Hall and Dr. Bullock discuss the findings, the urgency and the life-saving difference Smart Screening can have in the lives of high-risk men of color.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (authorized by Congress) determined that PSA prostate screening tests were no longer necessary for men who do not show symptoms or family history of the disease.
Dr. Hall and Dr. Bullock teamed with a coalition of health care providers and survivors in the Saint Louis Region to advocate Smart Screening for African American men and men with strong family histories of prostate cancer. The Prostate Cancer Coalition outreach is an effort to address the glaring disparity in survival rates between African-American men and other ethnic groups.
Stats:
African American men have the highest incidence of prostate cancer and the highest mortality rate of any ethnic/racial group. 1 in 6 African American men will get prostate cancer.
African American men are 2.3 times more likely to die from prostate cancer than any other racial group.
However, if prostate cancer is detected early, the survival rate is excellent regardless of race or ethnicity.
If you are an African American male age 45 or older, visit your doctor and ask about prostate cancer screening options. We advocate for Smart Screening and informed decision making. Knowledge is power!

Independent evaluators and St. Louis Surge representatives will conduct all tryouts, and evaluate all players on an individual basis.

There will be a $75 non-refundable pre-registration tryout fee for all players who register online. Players selected to join the Surge roster will be reimbursed their paid registration fee!
Players are encouraged to arrive at least 45 minutes early for pre-tryout stretching and warm-ups.

A successful anti-bullying event inspired by a mother and daughter team reached and transformed the lives of young people through art.

The three day event, Celebrating My Unique Through Art, An Anti-Bullying Campaign, commemorated National Education week and included a free screening of BROOKLYN, a French hip hop drama that premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival; a school wide assembly at Sumner High School with St. Louis hip hop artist Bo Dean, and a street art block party where artists celebrated individuality, essential to lessening bullying among young peers. Art pieces are being donated to the City of St. Louis to board up an abandoned home in North St. Louis.
The groundbreaking initiative---the only in St. Louis to launch such a massive anti-bullying campaign with a focus on the arts, targeting black youth--would appeal to local residents because of the public outcry for ways to curb violence in the black community and promote unity and understanding.

About the Film

Anthony M. Anderson Sr. a retired St Louis City Police Officer after 20 years of service wants to “Fill Gyms not Jails” with St. Louis area Youth. Anderson, who is currently a Metro Police officer, wants to give our kids a purpose in gyms to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. It is what Anderson has done since he was a kid and continues to do as an adult, which is “getting in the boxing ring”!
Anderson along with several other volunteer coaches and police officers, coach and mentor youth ages 9-21 at the Cass Street gym 5 nights a week. The P.A.L. (Police Athletic League) boxing program has served local youth since the mid 80’s.
Eventually Anderson and his team would like to have a year round program where boxers would receive mentoring, tutoring and other holistic services. Anderson, “boxing is the hook, these kids need so much more, and when we keep them in the gym, we keep them off the streets and out of jail”.
Anderson says boxing and his father helped him do the right thing as a youth and eventually as an adult. His father William “Sarge” Anderson, also a retired St Louis City police officer after 30 years was Andersons boxing coach. Sarge, was a pretty good boxer as well in the 1950’s. He was inducted into the St. Louis Boxers Hall of Fame in 2013.
To honor his dad, Anderson will host “The Showdown” William “Sarge” Anderson Boxing Classic on Thursday, October 22, 2015 @ 6:00 p.m. at the gateway Classic Foundation, 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd, St. Louis Missouri 63106. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the St. Louis P.A.L. Boxing program and “Back Stoppers”.

Why: This is our annual health fair centered around our push to provide mammography screenings through Mercy and their mammography van program, also done at this time every year in preparation for breast cancer awareness month.
This year we added on a farmer's market to bring healthy food options to our community, with demonstrations of fruits and vegetables that our demographic may not be accustomed to using, but are essential to maintaining good health during the fall and winter months.
We are a church without walls and want to meet people where they are. It's important that we are healthy, mind body and soul to positively impact the kingdom of God.
How: This year MissouriCare, sponsored a large portion of our fair and we are grateful to their support.
Who will be there:
Vendors for the day include Mercy Mammography Van, Cardinal Glennon Kids Safety Program, Proficient Chiropractic, The Empowerment Network will be available to do prostate screenings with a simple blood test, with much more. We also have a bounce house for the kids, so it's a family event.
The public will be able to purchase turkey legs, turkey tacos and candy apples.
We encourage everyone to come out and shop for fresh produce while enjoying the vendors and other treats.
But most importantly we want the public to take advantage of the free health services that will be available that day! We have one body and must manage it like well.

“Make a Splash” initiative. “Make a Splash” is a water safety program that offers free or reduced swim classes in local pools throughout St. Louis and nationwide. The program has come to St. Louis as part of the USA Swimming Foundation’s goal to teach 800,000 kids to swim this year. With this program, the foundation hopes to combat the following statistics:
· 70 percent of African Americans and 60 percent of Hispanic American children do not know how to swim
· Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death in children under 14
· Only 13 percent of children whose parents do not swim, will learn how to swim themselves
Because of the alarming numbers, the “Make a Splash” program is hyper-focused on providing swim lessons in minority communities.

Individuals diagnosed with breast cancer who need assistance paying their insurance premiums can now contact Gateway to Hope for help through the organization’s newly launched Insurance Premium Program (IPP). The new program, funded entirely through corporate and private sector donations, will assist individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment and reconstruction with the payment of health insurance premiums.
The program is open to individuals who live in Missouri and Illinois who are struggling with resources to help cover their treatment, and who meet the clinical and financial eligibility requirements.

Donate blood through the Red Cross in final weeks of summer!
The American Red Cross urges blood donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help prevent a blood shortage.
Blood donations often decline in August as final summer vacations are planned and back-to-school activities ramp up. On average, during the summer months, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what is needed.
Donations are needed now to help ensure blood is available for patients in need. Donors with types AB, O negative, B negative and A negative blood are especially encouraged to donate. Plasma from type AB donors can be transfused to patients of any blood type, as can type O negative blood. Type B negative and A negative blood can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients. These are the most in demand blood types and are in constant need.

Guests Can Receive Discounted Parking with Food Donation
Grant’s Farm is partnering with the St. Louis Area Foodbank to raise awareness of those in need of food assistance in the St. Louis community.
On Saturday July 18, Grant’s Farm will host a food drive where guests are invited to bring canned or packaged food to the farm. For every item donated, guests will receive $1 off parking, and there is no food donation limit. Once all food is collected, St. Louis Area Foodbank staff will deliver to the hungry in the St. Louis area.
The St. Louis Area Foodbank is the region's largest nonprofit food distribution center that feeds more 392,000 people throughout 26 counties in Missouri and Illinois. Children make up the largest segment of individuals needing food assistance, many of which rely on school meals throughout the year, making food donations in the summer months especially important.

The newly appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer of Annie Malone, William H. Young said that it’s his mission to elevate awareness behind the purpose of the parade. New to his position he’s eager to inform the community about Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center and the exceptional services they provide.

As part of a greater strategy for proactive expansion and deeper impact into communities and neighborhoods where kids need us most, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis is planning to open a new Club to serve youth ages 6-18 in Ferguson and the surrounding communities.
Starting this summer, a new Boys & Girls Club will open in Ferguson Middle School, located at 701 January Avenue, to serve approximately 400 members.
What has happened since the death of Michael Brown last August reflects a series of broken relationships; between communities of color and law enforcement; between the affluent and the poor; between whites and blacks; between government and the governed; and between those with jobs and the unemployed. Any response to these underlying causes of tension and unrest must attempt to address one or more of these challenges.
“Creating a Boys & Girls Club in the Ferguson area will produce positive outcomes in a community that has been subsumed with difficult realties and negative images. Moving a successful youth focused organization into Ferguson like Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis, which has a long track record of success, can bolster young people’s attitudes and give them a sense of hope. A new club will enrich our children’s lives and the city by helping its youth build strong character, graduate from high school with a plan for life, and become productive citizens,” said Dr. Flint Fowler, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis President.

More Than 500 St. Louis-Area Nonprofits to Benefit from the First-Ever, 24-hour Community-Wide Online Giving Initiative
All stand ready to see what St. Louis can give in a day, as the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation prepares to host Give STL Day, the region’s first-ever 24-hour online day of giving to benefit the local nonprofit community.
“Give STL Day is an opportunity for our community to shine and contribute to the local nonprofits that do so much good in our area, while also providing these organizations with a visible platform from which they can spread their message and raise funds,” said Amelia Bond, president and CEO of the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation.
“Collectively, Give STL Day draws attention to the needs of St. Louis nonprofits, as well as the positive things they are doing throughout the community. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
St. Louisans wishing to contribute on May 6 need only visit GiveSTLday.org, search for the charities of their choice, and make an online donation of $10 or more. Contributions will be added to the ongoing leaderboard located on the website and results tracked throughout the day. In addition, status updates – including giving challenges and six scheduled “Power Hours” – will be promoted on Facebook (facebook.com/stlouisgives) and Twitter (twitter.com/StLouisGives). During “Power Hours” all donations received will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000.
Joining the Community Foundation with support for Give STL Day are Boeing, US Bank, Peabody Energy, and Smith Moore.
Give STL Day will also help usher in the 2015 centennial of the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. The nation’s first community foundation was established in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914, and the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation was created the following year. Today, there are more than 800 community foundations across the country, and nearly 1,500 worldwide.
Throughout its history, the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation has served as an unbiased resource with unparalleled knowledge about the needs of both donors and the organizations they support. On behalf of its donors, the Community Foundation annually donates approximately $20 million to more than 450 organizations in St. Louis and around the world, and has contributed about $225 million over the past 25 years.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the need for awareness is still prominent. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than four children die every day as a result of child abuse. Unfortunately, Epworth Children & Family Services has experienced children and youth as victims of child abuse and neglect in their programs. The agency strives to make their clients feel safe and strong to give them the tools to be successful. Fawn joins us to speak on the psychological damages associated with the child abuse.
Child abuse is a problem in every community and Epworth hopes to shine light this month to provide more opportunities to bring the sensitive subject out of the dark.
