We did it!!!
500 episodes of the podcast.
It might not be a big deal to many of you but for me this is a huge milestone. I never thought I would do 10 episodes. It is wild to think about but this is a project that is bigger than almost anything else I have been a part of in my career.
So many hours of conversations with fantastic DPs from all over the world working on all sorts of projects.
It has been a lot of fun over the years and we have had some great guests on along the way. So many cinematographers came on and shared their tips and secrets. I tried to steal as much as I could and I hope you did as well.
Hearing from listeners all around the world over the years on the value they have found in the episodes has been a real treat and I am glad the show managed to find such an appreciative audience.
A special thanks to all of the Patreon supporters who have made it possible to work on this week in and week out for over a decade.
Everything that I wanted to accomplish in filmmaking when I started this show I somehow managed to achieve in and a large piece that made it all possible was the knowledge picked up in these conversations. If I can have a career there is no doubt you listening can also make it happen.

I am a huge fan of Oliver's work and he is tremendously talented as a cinematographer so it was nice to hear him speak on the sacrifices (or lack there of) at his level.
It is one thing to have a busy schedule and a completely different beast to have a successful career.

If you were an early supporter of the podcast the name Wunderboi will be very familiar. I got to know Ian on set about 10 years ago and slowly but surely he found his way on to a few of my sets in some fashion or another.
Eventually when I needed an operator on set for the narrative project I was working on in 2019 I called up the one and only to come and work on it.
Antics ensued and that is what we spend this podcast talkinga about. The days we disucss in this episode were definitely the closest I have come to wanting to stop cinematography all together and find something else to do. It isn't always a fun job but having a laugh along the way certainly makes it better.

Understanding exposure was key to my development as a cinematographer and the first major unlock of knowledge that made a measurable impact on my ability to create images I was happy with.
The system I used to strengthen my understanding of exposure and how to improve my ability to recognize various patterns of exposure gave me an ability to bypass years of on set experience. The tools that I used and still use to this day were simply unavailable to cinematographers up until a very short time ago.
In Mastering Exposure I breakdown my techniques for learning exposure, we go over just how important exposure actually is, and then lay out my workflow from start to finish as to how to use the knowledge you gain from your studies.
I can confidently say that nothing has made a larger impact on my cinematography abilities than my thorough approach to understanding exposure and how to manipulate it in the most efficient way possible.

Cinematography can seem incredibly complex but underneath it all there are some fundamental decisions that must be made if you are going to get images you are happy with. Exposure and understanding how to best manipulate exposure and why one way is better or more efficient than another is absolutely essential if you are going to work with a crew and on schedule.

The Spot - Nowhere to HideShot #1 - The WideThe ShotWide shot of husband and wife in a bedroom. The husband is running all over the room quickly packing his bags to leave.
The LightingWe used Titan Tubes everywhere for this spot. They were outside for ambient moon light. They were inside using the bed as an overhead rig.
They were floating around on the floor to help wrap the top light. It was Titan Tubes everywhere.
The ResultShot #2 - The InsertThe ShotHusband grabbing keys off the dresser.
The LightingWe used the practical in the background for mood and used a tube just over the camera pushed through a 4x4 frame to light the keys and hand.
The ResultShot #3 - The Classic Closet ShotThe ShotThe man flips through hangers grabbing clothes off the rack.
The LightingTubes, tubes and more tubes. Plus a 4x4 frame for softness from frame right.
The ResultShot #4 - Hero MomentThe ShotThis was the hero shot. The camera dollies in as the woman breaks down.
The LightingWe took the lighting from the wide and lessened the level. Then from the ground we pushed a softer amount of light to help ease the bags under the eyes created by the overhead.
The colored tube behind the bed helped seperate her hair from the grey background.
The ResultShot #5 - The 270The ShotThe camera tracks the husband all over the room as he collects his things.
The LightingThis was the death set up. Actor moving all over the room and no grid to light from above. No time to re-organize the room to create pockets of light and dark so we had to do our best with the limited resources avilable,
The ResultShot #6 - The ExitThe ShotThe husband opens the bedroom door and exits.
The LightingI chose the moment before the door opens and creates some depth to show you how flat things got in the space.
No option to backlight because of the height of the ceiling and the lack of a grid. No ability to create pools of interest because of the width of the shot.
Not many solutions to flatness in a space like this. This is one where you'd lova to have production design do a lot of the heavy lifting but then you remember you are in a modern white walled house where everything is neutral.

The Spot(s) - Same Location, New LookShot #1 - The WideThe ShotThe Master wide shot as Dad enters and says good morning.
The LightingOutside the windows frame left are the big HMIs pushing through 12x12s. The hard slash is creating using a 4k HMI and flagging off some of the spill to get the directional push we needed.
Inside there are practicals all over the place paired with a Creamsource Vortex in a softbox through a 4x4 frame with a grid to add some wrap to the young girl's face in the foreground.

The LightingThis was the flopped lighting and because we were walking the entirety of the house we had to go full sheers mode on the windows which meant very little ambient would make it to the other side of the room.
This was a classic light the space and just let it go.

Understanding exposure was key to my development as a cinematographer and the first major unlock of knowledge that made a measurable impact on my ability to create images I was happy with.
The system I used to strengthen my understanding of exposure and how to improve my ability to recognize various patterns of exposure gave me an ability to bypass years of on set experience. This particular course is Volume II and it centers on the most common scenario which is the Office Scenario. The name office has nothing to do with the physical location of the scene but rather the orientation of the characters relative to one another.

I enjoyed the cinematography throughout the film and the scene we take a deep dive in to is probably the most challenging scene you can be put in without crazy stunt work or long action sequences. It is challenging from a lighting point of view and a coverage perspective.

The Spot - Negative Fill, Positive VibesShot #1 - The Classic Cop ShotThe ShotOur hero police talent zeroes in on a speeding car coming down the highway.
The LightingOn a shot this long and on a day this gloomy there wasn't much to do except try and add as much contrast in the foreground as possible.
Either side of the camera there is a 12x12 Neg to help kill all of the ambient light coming behind camera.
The ResultShot #2 - The Reverse ApproachThe ShotInside the car we see the driver notice the policeman and pull over to the side of the road.
The LightingWe had planned to shoot this backlit if the sun was out so we shot in the same direction as the previous set up. We also had to shoot in that direction because facing South was unusable because of location issues.
The only lighting inside the car was black duvetyne wrapped on all of the windows.
The ResultShot #3 - The Cowboy WideThe ShotOur Policeman approaches the car and sees the child in the backseat.
The LightingAgain this shot was placed in the schedule to coincide with a sun in just the right position out of frame. The clouds made that fact unimportant and we had to readjust our look.
Frame left and behind camera there is Negative Fill to crush the ambient light.
The ResultShot #4 - The POVThe ShotThis is the POV of the officer as he scans the car from front to back.
The LightingWe went against the classic framework here and lit the car interior from the short side. This meant we brought in the negative fill very close frame right to cut down on any ambient leaking through and destroying what little contrast we were able to capture.
The ResultShot #5 - The Long SingleThe ShotThe tight of the moment of realisation for the speeding driver.
The LightingSame as above but now we added negative fill inside the vehicle to help control the contrast on the face.
We balanced the shot to the light we were able to get from the overcast sky on the drivers cheek and then killed the ambient in the car to taste.

Advanced Cinematography: Location Lighting - LAST CHANCEFriday this week is your final chance to enroll in Advanced Cinematography: Location Lighting.
The course is not going away but I am going to limit enrolment in the advanced series going forward and open it up only once or twice as year.
This course walks you through every aspect of cinematography in a typical commercial environment. I lay out what I do in prep, before the location scouts, during the location scouts, the tech scout process, the gear list, the crew, then we shot an entire ad from start to finish on a virtual set.
I go over schedules, the importance of sequencing, and so much more.
I titled this course Advanced because I didn't water down the content to make it more approachable. This is the whole entire job. Everything I do from start to finish on every project I am a part of. Nothing is left to the imagination.
I created this course because this is exactly what I would have liked to have access to when I was starting my professional career. I think if you are in a position where your commercial career is just beginning than no content I have put out anywhere else comes close to the amount of information laid out in this course.

The Spot - Lighting the SpaceShot #1 - The WideThe ShotOur main hero talent sits at the table while the two male characters enter from frame right. This wide was a handheld version of the entire action that could be used to fill in any gaps in coverage.
The LightingWe used a 12k HMI to act as ambient level for the windows frame left. To add some direction to the background we used a 4x4 mirror outside to throw on to the shelves behind the seated lady.
Inside is negative fill running down frame right and then the Area 48 Source 4 style LED blasting into the roof to control the ambient level. Out the back pointing in through the windows is a 4k HMI.
The ResultShot #2 - The Push InThe ShotA slow push in as the talent delivers the key lines for the ad.
The LightingWe had the exact same set up as before but we added a Skypanel S-60 in a softbox to help wrap the light around from the 12k key light.
On the dark side is a smaller Skypanel S-30 to act as a back edge for the talent. The neg is moved closer to be able to control the levels.
The ResultShot #3 - The B CamThe ShotSame as above but from the B CAM.

The ResultShot #4 - The OverThe ShotThe over the shoulder reverse of the action. We played out the whole scene from this angle to cover the various interactions between the 3 characters.
The LightingSame set up as before for the windows and the ambient but we switched the direction of the S-60 and also added 2x 4k HMIs down the back to act as level for the background as the talent exits frame.

Recently a listener brought it to my attention that I often lean on the negative side of things when talking about my own experience as a cinematographer.
This is true.
I think it is more fun to poke fun at myself and the times when I drop the ball rather than go on about all of the great aspects about the job.
The problem with that approach is it might seem like it is all bad when that couldn't be further from the truth. Cinematographers have the best jobs on set by a mile. If you like making pictures, it might be the best job period.
There are tons of upsides and that is what this episode is all about.
What are the best parts of being a DP that no one ever talks about?

The Spot - Depth = GoodShot #1 - The Long WideThe ShotThis is the establishing shot of a woman getting ready to attack the day. The camera is constantly moving in this spot on the easy rig.
The LightingFor this entire set up we had 2 4k HMIs going into mirror boards to try and add some shape to the foreground and the mid ground.
Inside the bathroom all the walls were covered in duvetyne to create some local contrast. Above the mirror (which you can see in the above 2:1 image straight out of the camera) is a Titan Tube with a grid on it.
The still presented here are 2:1 but the final spot was framed and shot for the traditional 2.35 anamorphic frame.
The ResultShot #2 -Down the LineThe ShotSame as above but we punch in to get closer to the action.

The ResultShot #3 - The Hard LightThe ShotWe reverse the camera position relative to the action and do it all over again. As the actress leans down to cough she is exposed to the harsher light from the 4k outside.
The LightingSame as above except we changed some of the diffusion inside the bathroom to get more of the contrast between the down low light and the higher up softness.
The ResultShot #4 - The Soft LightThe ShotA continuation of the previous angle.
The LightingSame as above but now the actress can be seen in the soft light rather than the harsher light.
The ResultShot #5 - The Hallway WideThe ShotWide shot outside the door frame of a couple waking up early in the morning. The man gets up and starts having a coughing fit on the side of the bed.
The LightingWe shot this scene during the day and it was more about taking light away rather than adding it. There is black duvetyne everywhere in the room that the camera can't see.
The window has diffusion over it plus the sheers inside plus the curtains. To keep the level of the window consistent there is a creamsource vortex set up outside.
The ResultShot #6 - Down the Line (Repeat)The ShotA mid shot of the couple as the man rises out of bed.
The LightingSame as above but we added a small 2x4 piece of poly to help lift the man's face just a touch above the background.
The ResultShot #7 - CoverageThe ShotThis is the over the shoulder coverage on to the wife's reaction of waking up hearing the coughing.
The LightingSame as above.
The ResultShot #8 - The Close UpThe ShotThe final shot is the close up reaction to the end of the coughing fit.
The LightingSame as the previous shots in this set up except we are able to better control the level of the poly as we move closer and closer.

Shady Business- The SpotWe shot this ad on the Alexa Mini LF paired with a set of Sigma FF lenses.
The Location - Night LifeNight exterior's are always a challenge when it comes to pre-production and scheduling and this campaign was no exception. The location options meant we only had a few different angles and options to choose from but we made it work in the end.
It is always a mix of determining where you can get the most bang for the buck and what is actually feasible given the size of the sand box set out by the realities of the production.
In this case we wanted the wide looking down the long end of the street with the most interest in the background and then we would place the overhead crane in the car park so as to keep it off the road and out of the wide shot.
The Spot - Shot by ShotShot 1 - The WideThe ShotOur hero group of talent exits the car and heads towards the police car in the background. The camera booms up on the crane to reveal the size of the scene.
The LightingWe had the overhead rig which was a 12x12 skirted from a bucket with 4 Creamsource Vortex's inside. Down the road in the background with had a mixture of various LEDs to help add some shape and depth in combination with the police light practicals.
The wet down allowed the light to give us that much level with the reflections and the up light from the road itself.
The ResultSet Up #2 - The ApproachThe ShotThe hero talent waves the cars through as she prepares to administer a breath test.
The LightingEverything we had in the wide shot we kept for this set up but we did add some ambient light from the ground to help lift her face levels when she wasn't being illuminated by the police lights.
The light was an LED panel (another Vortex I believe) through a frame to soften it up and blend it in with the environment.
The ResultSet Up #3 - The Back ShotThe ShotThe reverse of the previous set up.
The LightingHere the main challenge was that we wanted to avoid looking to directly down the road itself which meant we had to shoot at a steep angle than previous shots.
We moved the action up the road a little as opposed to moving the overhead rig simply because it was quicker. We also placed some small battery powered LEDs in the BG to provide a little twinkle in an other wise flat frame.
The ResultSet Up #4 - The Vehicle SeriesThe ShotA quasi-POV shot of the office administering the breath test to the driver of the hero vehicle.
The LightingWE used the same overhead set up as previous shots but then used a series of 4x4 frames near the windshield to help carry some level inside the car itself. Behind the diffusion is LED panels.
There was very low level needed because we were trying to balance everything to the streetlights that were already in place.
There is also an eye light in the set up but it doesn't read at this angle in the freeze frame.
From behind we had another LED panel doing the police siren effect with the alternating red and blue pattern for a backlight.
The ResultSet Up #5 - Down the LineThe ShotTighter on the previous shot.
The LightingSee above.
The ResultShot #6 - The FinaleThe ShotThe quasi-POV reverse of the police officer approaching the window of the vehicle.
The LightingWE used the same set up as above but shifted the position of the fixtures around so as not to add to much fronty level to her face.
We also repositioned the vehicle itself so we avoided the base of the crane which is just off camera right behind the tree and the arm is actually behind the tree. It is shallow enough wide open to not even be able to recognize the arm at all.
The power of a full frame sensor and T1.5 lenses. If you don't want to see something just kill it with shallow depth of field.

This is the second course in the BODVO system and centers around the "Office" scenario. The system I lay out in this course is how I approach every job and every scene I shoot regardless of the style or subject matter.
I am incredibly proud of the final result and it encapsulates everything I know about cinematography systems in an easy to follow structured environment.

I am very excited about this next chapter in the BODVO system as this course specifically covers the most common scenario that every cinematographer will face on a daily basis. The process of creating these courses forces me to drill down and filter out my process to what works and what doesn't and this project really opned my eyes to how often I am using the tools and techniques I lay out.
Every decision in cinematography has consequences and the more we can know about what those consequences are and how the effectr the final image the better off we are to be able to guide the project to it's best end.

No filters or any magic in front of the lens just the Cookes at near wide open and a whole lot of ND filtration.

The Spot - Shot by ShotShot 1 - The WideThe ShotOur hero talent exits the garage and rides off.
The LightingWe had a 12k HMI through a series of diffusion frame right outside the garage. The sun was almost directly above so the 12k is there to add some reach into the garage itself.
Tucked in the garage was an Area 48 ellipsoidal type LED that was being shot into the roof to provide some general ambient.
There is also a 4k HMI frame left coming through one of the windows in the garage.
StoryboardThe ResultShot #2 - The Dirty Mid ShotThe ShotThe camera floats and finds shots as the wide shot is rolling.
The LightingSame as above but as we go in tighter we can manipulate the interior levels by raising one of the garage doors or pumping in more ambient with the Area 48 as the frame is smaller.
StoryboardThe ResultShot #3 - The Roving SingleThe ShotThis was a tracking shot were we played through the entire scene on this angle.
The LightingWe had to re-rig the Area 48 ambient light and adjust levels on the 12k outside the garage but everything else is the same lighting wise because we had so much physical ground to cover we couldn't really light to one specific area.
StoryboardThe ResultShot #4 - The Push InThe ShotThis was the most important frame of the ad and the one we spent the most time on.
The LightingAll of the blocking of the characters was built out for this specific angle to be possible on our hero shot. We used the 12k from outside to dial in the right amount of key and then wrapped it with some closer 4x4 diffusion frame left just out of frame.
Frame right is some 4x4 floppies to dial up the contrast and mood and then we manipulated the garage doors frame left to add or take away level from the background.

The LightingI was operating here and acting as the bio-neg. I was trying to light via the angle as more or less contrast is revealed as we increase or decrease the angle of the camera relative to the subject's eyeline.

No not that kind of lit. In this week's Patreon episode I am going to share what I think makes things feel lit which is simply shorthand for not feeling right. Whatever that right might be if something feels lit it is usually not right.
There is a level of nuance that we haven't yet reached and that is what I am going over in this podcast. What it is and how I try and fix it when I see it.

On the Road Again- The SpotWe shot this ad on the Alexa Mini LF paired with a set of Cooke Speed Panchros.
Most of the lenses don't cover the sensor so aprat from the opening crane shot everything else is the 50mm or 75mm.
There were no fancy lighting tricks or techniques. The only lamp we used was a 12k HMI built before I was born and some giant solids to dial up the contrast.
The Spot - Shot by ShotShot 1 - The WideThe ShotOur hero sits in his silver pick up truck hating his life. The camera swooshes down towards the lollipop lady.
The LightingThe location is north facing meaning the sun would at least be somewhat backy most of the morning looking north east.
The real lighting was deciding what the earliest we could shoot this shot would be and still be able to carry over the look for the rest of the day as the sun rapidly gained altitude.
Any lower and the shadows would be too long. Any higher the shadows start to disappear and it all becomes very flat.
The ResultShot #2 - In the CarThe ShotThe camera tracks in over our hero's shoulder to reveal his nemesis (the lollipop lady) making eye contact.
The LightingThe clouds quickly stole all of our contrast from the wide shot so decisions had to be made. Do we or don't we pull out the 12k. We went with yes let's do it.
Normally I regret those decisions and this is no exception.
WE had the 12k through a 12x12 frame right and a 20x12 of black frame left to kill any fill from the road and sky.
The ResultSet Up #3 - The Social ShotThe ShotSame as before but now we are closer and wider.
The LightingThe sun popped in and out for this entire set up so not sure which take they eventually used but when it is in full sun you can see the 12k is not doing much except showing up in her glasses reflection.
It is the same set up as before but everything came that much closer as we weren't seeing as much of the world.
The ResultSet Up #4 - The Truck TrackThe ShotThe camera tracks in on the line of the truck as it shakes back and forth as the driver sings.
The LightingThis was the sacrificial shot of the day. Not the right time of day for this one but there was nothing else to take it's place so we did what we could.
There is a tiny bit of level coming from camera right and then the neg sucking up the ambient frame left.
The ResultSet Up #5 - The Sun FlopThe ShotThe final shot of the ad as the cars drive off.
The LightingWe waited until after lunch to try and pull this one off because we wanted the sun behind her rather than front lighting her.
It would have been ideal to wait another hour or two but in the commercial world with small margins and tight days we had to push on.
We used the same set up as the previous road work but we flopped the sides to try and pull some shape out of the high sun.
The ResultShot #6 - The Car WorkThe ShotThe classic driver push in as they realize somethign is wrong.
The LightingIf you are a veteran listener of the show you will have seen this shot about 100 times. It is a very common situation for a DP but I am not sure we have ever done a full 180 sun swap.
Here the sun is coming from frame right as it's the afternoon and we are now facing south.
To stay consistent with the morning footage I wanted to flop the sun side so we used the 12k from frame left through a 12x12 and then blacked out the sun and the car frame right.
The ResultShot #7 - In TightThe ShotSame as above but tighter.
The LightingSame as above but I may have ever so slightly adjusted the neg in the car to let a little light leak in from camera right.
The ResultShot #8 - The Stand AloneThe ShotBy this point in the day we were really pushing just to get stuff in the can. There wasn't much lighting to do as we didn't have the time and the angle of the sun and road meant there weren't many options to begin with.
The LightingDonuts.
The ResultShot #9 - The FinaleThe ShotThis is my least favorite shot to shoot. The rear-view mirror shot.
It always takes 5x longer than scheduled for and the results are always just ok.
The LightingWe did bounce a little something from frame left. The dreaded fill side bounce because the contrast with the hat was so crazy. Probably a 4x4 poly just under the frame.
Nightmare.

Patreon Breakdown - JokerEvery so often I like to revisit films that raise the bar for cinematography and this week I am taking you along for the ride as well with a look at Joker shot by Lawrence Sher ASC.
I think we looked at Joker last year when we were still analysing stills but on this one we break down the moving components and study how the look is created through the light and lensing.
Everybody has something to take away from a film like this and it is refreshing to see what a crew at the top of it's game can accomplish.

The Art of Sacrifice - The SpotCamera Gear:We shot on the Arri Mini LF paired with Sigma Primes and a Black Pro Mist filter for any amount of non-cleanliness we could get.
It wasn't much but it was better than the alternative.
The Location - One House to Rule Them AllWe shot a ton of set ups in this house so it was important it worked for all angles and directions. It didn't really tick any one box in particular but it had enough variety, was large enough, and was willing to have a film crew in it for 12 hours so our job as to make it work.
The Spot - Shot by ShotShot 1 - The BuildThe ShotFather and Daughter sit at the living room table making a toy car.
The LightingWe knew the lighting was going to have to be generic enough to work for all the of the set ups throughout the day so we kept it very simple.
An Arri M90 outside for a bit of kick coupled with Arri M40s near the talent window and then inside we have a Creamsource Cortex camera left through a 6x6 diffusion and another Vortex frame right to add some fill to the girl.
The ResultFull FrameSet Up #2 - The Push FinishThe ShotA Push in and a lens change from the previous set up.
The LightingSee above but added more fill to suit the action. Never add more fill. Always regret.
The ResultFull FrameSet Up #3 - The EaselThe ShotThis was a one off shot for one of the 6 second ads and it was a simple push in on the easy rig as our talent put the finishing touches on her painting.
The LightingWe swung the 9k around camera left and then added some Neg camera right to help contain some of the ambient light. The level was dropping fairly quickly at this point so it became a balancing act of taking heat out the M90 while still getting some contrast in.
The ResultSet Up #4 - The Dog ShotThe ShotOur hero talent relaxes with his feet in the pool as his trusty dog waits at his side.
The LightingWe went straight into this set up after shots 1 and 2 and that meant the 9k played from the corner of the yard then we wrapped a vortex nearer to camera to help even out the light.
Camera right is neg to take some of the ambient away and add contrast.
The ResultFull FrameSet Up #5 - The LaughThe ShotMost of the ads were two simple shots with the wide and the close up. This was the reactio shot to the man's wife making him laugh.
The LightingWe couldn't really look another direction so we changed lenses to a little bit longer and came around camera left. Everything else is as above in Shot #4.

A few months back we shot a commercial in one of the trickiest set ups possible.
A non-montage, day exterior, that in film world takes place over a few seconds but in the real world took 10 hours to shoot. Plus the location was surrounded by large trees and sat at the bottom of a valley and it was the middle of winter.
This podcast is all about how we overcame the many hurdles and ended up with something in the world of decent.

The show certainly has a style but in this breakdown it was interesting to compare it to previous seasons as cinematographers have changed and their influence can certainly be felt.

Chasing the Sun - The SpotCamera Gear:We had all the usual suspects on this commercial for gear. We shot with the Alexa Mini LF paired with Cooke S7 lenses all operating from a Ronin 2 with your truly manning the Tilta Armour man rig.
Did it work? Yes.
Would I recommend it? No.
Why? Listen to the podcast.
The Location - Chasing the SunThe location was about as tricky as you could possible make it for a day like we had scheduled.
Budgets are getting tighter and tighter and more is being packed into an already crowded day with the addition of socials and other content pieces.
We did our best to keep a consistent look but we were also realistic about what was going to happen over the course of 10 hours in a heavily wooded valley in the middle of winter.
Below is the final shot so that you can orient yourself to the aerial map above. The frame is looking almost due North. The sun is almost completely behind the little hill to the left and we were really racing to get this done before we lost all level.
The Spot - Shot by ShotShot 1 - Wide Reaction ShotThe ShotCouple exit their car and meet at the front. There they notice our hero talent one upping them.
The LightingThe sun dud most of the heavy lifting but the heavy BG foliage meant getting a bounce on the talent wasn't the easiest. We used a 12x12 Ultra Bounce and did the best we could.
Camera right is a 12x20 Neg to try and add some shape to the relatively flat foreground.
The ResultStory BoardShot #2 - The Push InThe ShotSame as above but closer.
The LightingThis is a continuation of the previous set up.
Only change is everything is closer and the position of the bounce was shifted to catch the shifting sun light.
The ResultThe StoryboardShot #3 - Stand-aloneThe ShotThe middle of the day stuff ended up being the social campaign. These needed to feel in the same world but didn't have to match.
The LightingThe sun is the backlight and then bounced back to the talent via a 12x12 Ultra Bounce. Camera right is our 12x20 Neg for some contrast. Only other addition is a 4x4 frame above camera to help contain some of the highlights on the car.
The ResultShot #4 - The Tea SipperThe ShotThe classic pour shot.
The LightingSame as above but we lowered the bounce and added a poly for more punch and we removed the 4x4 frame as it would have been in shot.
The ResultThe StoryboardShot #5 - A Moment of ReflectionThe ShotWider version of the above frame.
The LightingSee above but removed the 4x4 Poly.
The ResultThe StoryboardShot #6 - Attack the DayThe ShotCamera slowly creeps backwards as our hero talent gets her gear from the truck and heads out on the hiking trail.
The LightingSun as the backlight and a small 4x4 Poly adding the little kick to the face. Our 12x20 Neg is wrapping camera left to behind the camera.
The ResultShot #7 - The ReactionThe ShotOur hero eyes the couple and they walk off together down the hiking trail.
The LightingSame basic set up as we have run all day. Large Bounce frame right to wrap the sun, sun as backlight, and the neg camera left.
The ResultShot #8 - The 2nd Stand-aloneThe ShotStand-alone ad for the couple. They walk towards camera sharing a laugh.

The ResultShot #9 - The LogoThe ShotLogo end frame as talent emerges from a day of hiking.
The LightingWe were just trying to get this shot before the sun dipped behind the hills frame left. Behind camera is the 12x20 Neg to add some shape but more so to hide any reflections of crew, agency, craft tents everywhere.

The New Reality - One Day, 12 SpotsThe world of commercial cinematography is twisting and turning into a brand new beast with every passing shoot. This job sums up what I expect to see more of in the future. It might not be the best thing but the writing is on the wall for where the industry is heading.
Camera Gear:We shot this on the Alexa Mini LF paired with Sigma primes and a 1/8 BPM filter.
The Location - One House, 12 SpotsWe had a ton of spots to get through in one day which meant we needed a plan, a halfway decent location, and a whole lot of speed to make it happen.
The Spot - Shot by ShotShot 1 -Dog WalkThe ShotThe ad starts with a Dad and daughter constructing a cubby house. The dog enters camera right and takes over the house.
The LightingWe had an M90 outside to bring in as much directional level as possible. It is softened for the talent through a series of diffusion but left raw for the background. I can't remember if we had to net it down in level for the background but there was definitely no diffusion for the lamp on the wall.
Inside we had an Arri Skypanel for wrap pushing through an 8x8 of diffusion on camera right.
Everywhere the camera wasn't looking we had blacks to soak up the ambient bounced light.
For a back edge we had a Joker 800 throwing into a 1x1 CRLS Reflector to compete with the M90 level.
The ResultFull FrameSet Up #2 -The FloatThe ShotHandheld floaty close up to help complete the coverage.
The LightingThis is a continuation of the previous set up.
The ResultFull FrameSet Up #3 - The FindThe ShotSame as above but around the front for the moment the dog enters the cubby house.

Full FrameSet Up #4 - Day for NightThe ShotOur main talent is scrolling through her laptop as her partner joins her from the kitchen.
The LightingThis was shot in the middle of the day because of the way the scheduled needed to be structured. We blacked out all the windows then keyed with a Vortex through a 4x4 frame camera right.
Camera left the blue edge is another vortex dialed into 5600k.
Out the back we opened up the black out to allow a little bit of the daylight to leak through and add some depth.
In the background the practicals were our bulbs in combination with an Astera Tube to help get a little bit of level in the BG.

The ResultSocialsShot #6 - End of DayThe ShotWe track in behind our hero talent as she is greeted by her partner outside their house.
The LightingThis was supposed to have an end of day feel but we couldn't shoot it at sunset as we had a more important set up that needed to be done at magic hour.
We shot with the sun at our backs, put up Neg all around the camera, and dialled in the practicals in the background right before we rolled.
The ResultShot #7 - Fire PitThe ShotOur hero couple exchange a few lines in front of the fire pit.
The LightingThis was the big magic hour shot. We used the Vortexes in the foreground for both key and edge lights.
In the background we had an Arri Skypanel inside for ambient as well as our own bulbs in all the practicals to set the inside mood right were we wanted it.
We put 4x4 floppies camera right to help create a little bit more contrast in the relatively soft magic hour light.

When I was starting out I had no idea what to expect in terms of shoot days over the course of the year, prep days, rental returns, nothing. So I wanted to track it all so that others could have a better roadmap of what to expect as a working cinematographer.
