It didn’t just end up empowering those people but lightened the load on them especially with respect to their interactions with others. Some go on a guilt trip; some feel that they aren’t doing something right and some others push themselves completely against their will again and again. Here’s an approach that is easy, light and practical.

While a lot of cultures and schools of thought across the world have prescribed this idea, Vinesh alludes to the time when he was struck by it when he read it in Randy Pausch’s book “The Last Lecture”. More importantly, Vinesh relates the “People are more important than things” idea to instances from everyday life especially the ways in which they unfold in terms of us having to make a choice between people and things. As always, inspiring his listeners to develop positive behaviour.

This is a way of looking at and living life that is more aligned to what most of us seek and want to experience. In other words, feelings and emotions like happiness, peace, bliss or even the feeling of being successful. The “Be Do Have” philosophy is something that is extremely useful and yet least understood. Partially because of poor explanations but also because it’s so counter intuitive to what we’re told or taught to do throughout our lives. Here’s a lucid and crisp account.

Are you among those people who would go on a fitness regime or diet plan to get fitter and lost weight, only so that you can start eating junk food again or sit around in the couch being lazy again. In this podcast you’ll learn about one of the most effective mindsets to approach anything in life with. One that doesn’t just ensure better but permanent results. More importantly, people who subscribe to this mindset often reach a point where they do things for the sheer joy of doing it and the results sort of become a natural by-product of that.

For a lot of people, trust is like an on off game. You either trust or you don’t trust someone. And if trust is lost it’s often a one-way ticket. In this podcast, Vinesh Sukumaran explores the phenomenon of trust in the light of what he’s observed in a particular display of the Cirque Du Soleil. One of the best ways to understand trust is to study people who demonstrate a high level of trust with each other and derive lessons from the contexts in which those people trust each other the most. Here are three lessons about trust from the Cirque Du Soleil.

There’s a popular quote in relationship coaching circles, “Attraction is not a choice”. This is also true of love. You hardly have any control over when you’ll fall in love and when you’ll fall out of love. While falling in love can be an amazing experience, what do you do when you actually fall out of love. Vinesh Sukumaran answers that question through the positive behaviour lens. By the way, this podcast isn’t just talking about dealing with falling out of love with a person. You could fall out of love with your circle of friends, with the city you live in, with your job or even with your hobbies and interests. He even talks about resigning to an interesting quote about love by Franz Kafka.

This podcast is a response to an email that Vinesh Sukumaran received from a 12-year-old (whom he calls Rebecca) about challenges that she’s facing related to anxiety, stress and low self-esteem among other things. In the process of responding to the 12-year-old, Vinesh also shares insights about how anyone at any age can feel more relaxed and live a better life. He talks specifically about another key dimension of positive psychology, authenticity. It’s the quality of being genuine, being real and being yourself. You’ve probably heard the phrase “be careful what you ask for”, and it often implies that you might get what you ask for and then you won’t know how to deal with it. In this podcast Vinesh Sukumaran takes that discussion a step further by clarifying one of the reasons why people won’t be able to handle what they get in life. It particularly focuses on the kind of people you might want to have in life and what that means in terms of the kind of person who you need to first become.

Prayer is a wonderful thing. It’s a great form of solace and a window to peace and a sense of security. But sometimes, out of sheer habit, we end up praying for things or even passing the buck to a greater power. More importantly, prayer should not be a constant reminder of what you don’t have in your life. If you’re a person who prays every single day, do you have the courage to stop praying altogether. What might this mean for you and what might this do? Listen to this podcast to start having the right perspective towards prayer.

We do business with, want to work with as well as spend time with people whom we like. People who like us will do their best to make our lives easier, help us realize our dreams and do what matters to us. This quality of likability is more than just a “good to have”. In recent times, it’s moved to being a “must have” not just in people’s personal lives but also in the corporate world. You could have some incredible qualities in terms of technical competence, domain expertise or even a high IQ level, but if you’re not likable, you can take your other abilities and talents home with you. This is the third meditation podcast of the three-part series that Vinesh Sukumaran is sharing. In this podcast Vinesh has tried to simplify a form of meditation to a point where it almost becomes as good as just practicing mindfulness. If you’re looking for the simplest form of meditation that you can integrate into your life, the “whatever” meditation is it. There’s also a clear emphasis on the fact that it’s important to learn to relax, feel good and experience happiness in your everyday life and not just when you go live in an ashram, a monastery or join a retreat. If your life is happening outside the monastery, ashram or retreat and you want a practice to integrate into it. Try this one out.

This is the second meditation podcast of the three-part series that Vinesh Sukumaran is sharing. It’s being shared particularly in the interest of introducing people who want to practice meditation to something so simple that the entire technique of meditation is reduced to just one single step. It can be learnt in about 5 minutes and put to practice as soon as you finish learning it. This meditation is also something that you can do as a standalone activity or integrate it with anything else that you do in life like walking, eating, talking, reading or whatever else you choose.

This is the first meditation podcast of the three-part series that Vinesh Sukumaran is sharing. It’s a simple and absolutely neutral technique of meditation that anyone from any faith, belief system, culture or background can practice. It’s something that helps when done hours or even minutes and seconds before you actually need the meditation to work for you. At the same time, it’s a technique that can be practiced everyday and adopted as one’s approach to broadening the horizons of the mind, expanding consciousness or sometimes just to feel relaxed and feel good throughout the day. It takes less than ten minutes to learn and is something that you can put to practice right away.

Though a fairly simple podcast about a Whatsapp message that Vinesh Sukumaran receives from a friend, the real message in it is deep. Alluding to the things that we hold on to in life, like real possessions, thoughts, habits, idiosyncrasies, people and lifestyles. Sometimes it’s time to just let go. You’ll be just fine. In fact, because you let go, you allow yourself to get rid of all the clutter and become more of the person you really are and are meant to be. By letting go of things, you aren’t losing anything, on the contrary you’re just becoming more of your real self.

I’ve often seen people trying to do all sorts of things to prepare for their old age. This could range from diet and exercise to saving money and in some cultures even getting married and having kids as a way to secure their distant futures. All that is great and each of them have their own kernel of truth hidden within. This podcast is about doing something far simpler, that ensures that when the things that excite you today fade away, you still have something to hold onto. Something that will make you feel good and keep you going.

Just pause for a moment and think about the way you’d like to work, get things done or even spend your time and life in general. Is your genuine preference to do things by yourself because you think that the dynamics of interaction and getting someone else involved is far more complicated and cumbersome than just doing it yourself? Don’t get me wrong, there are real perks in the focused attention and flow that one can derive out of doing things alone and in no way do I mean to dismiss the value that some introverts bring onto the table. This podcast is about appreciating the possibility that collaboration and working with and through others might take a huge load off our chests and help us get more done while actually being happier and improving the quality of our lives. Often, as opposed to torturing ourselves in isolation or doing things alone because the other alternatives seem like a pain in the neck.

A lot of us actually end up relaxing a lot more when we’re not trying too hard to relax. A lot of us experience true peace when we’re not being stressed about finding peace and needing to be peaceful. Likewise, true happiness might keep evading you as long as you keep chasing it with a sense of desperation and anxiety. This podcast talks about a smart way to pursue anything in life and a great response to have when things are not going your way. There is real value in knowing when to push yourself harder and when to stand back. As the title of this podcast states, “Sometimes” it’s better to just let yourself be.

All too often in life, we try way too hard to achieve a lot of things. Not just the usual dimensions of health, wealth and happiness but also other dimensions of success, dreams or personal goals in life. There is something about trying too hard that gives a lot of people the opposite results of what they're actually trying to achieve. In this podcast, Vinesh Sukumaran talks about how the magic formula might actually be one of ease rather than being one of doing your best in a desperate attempt to get what you want. He wonderfully links this to the work of Viktor Frankl, particularly the concept of paradoxical intention.

It was the Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi who originally recognised, named and defined the concept of Flow in psychology. In this podcast, Vinesh Sukumaran explains clearly what Flow is, how to recognize it and recall the times when it’s happened to you. Flow, like every other state leaves clues and therefore has some typical qualities that could help anyone reach that state again and again. More importantly, this podcast outlines four specific tips to help you experience flow and in turn experience greater happiness.

It’s quite unfortunate that reading seems to be a vanishing trait across the world. People seem to be reading less and less and even when some of them sit down to read a book, there is this sense of wanting to finish it and move on to the next activity. In this podcast Vinesh Sukumaran moves beyond the usual suspects of why reading matters and especially throws light on how reading helps you really have a finer mind and experience more positive states. There is a specific mention of the unique benefit of reading any particular book again and again.

How badly do you stand for the things that you stand for? To what extent would you go to in order to guard and protect your personal rules and regulations for life? These personal rules are great if they're actually helping you and making your life better. This podcast is motivated by people who Vinesh Sukumaran has met through his work as a coach and consultant who were in many ways trapped by the very rules that they once created for themselves. If you’re doing things just because it’s part of your rule book but it isn’t useful, it isn’t helpful, it isn’t effective and it isn’t even making you happy, then the message in this podcast is for you.

Though the words Feelings and Emotions are often used interchangeably, in this podcast, Vinesh Sukumaran highlights clear differences between them. More importantly, this podcast throws light on how Feeling Good could be our default state and a more natural state than a lot of us make it out to be. Think about it, even just left alone we might almost automatically start feel good. There is also an interesting discussion here about the book “The Power of Now” by the great spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle and how even if we have to choose between feeling good and feeling bad, it might hardly make a big difference in terms of the emotions we finally experience. Especially since feeling good is closer to our instinct than we imagine.

Sometimes, it’s worth reminding ourselves that there is nothing more we need to gain or get in order to feel happy or feel good. On the contrary, there might be a lot the we already have that we need to get rid of in order to reduce our baggage. Reduce both the physical load as well as the metaphorical load that we carry by holding onto things, people, habits, ideas and thoughts. This podcast talks about specific positive behaviours and ways in which you can declutter your life at many levels.

I once read somewhere that we believe so strongly that the walls around us exist that we start to freeze without them. A lot of us become absolutely attached to our affiliations, our styles, our schools of thought and our beliefs. This is great for a sense of identity and being grounded in something strong. Something that you can proudly say that you stand for. But sometimes, along with this comes your need to protect what you represent and in worse cases exclude and even harm others who don’t stand for the same things. This podcast is about getting you to examine your attachments and checking if you’re attached at the cost of your or someone else’s happiness.

While there’s a lot that’s inspired me from one of my favourite books, Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance, this little concept stands out. I love Robert Pirsig’s explanation of it and since I first read it, I’ve been amazed at the number of areas in life where the concept of the South Indian Monkey Trap applies. Pretty much in any aspect of life where you think you have only one way of doing things and are stuck in limited mindsets, ways of thinking and in turn behaving. Vinesh Sukumaran explains in this podcast what the trap is and the positive behaviour of escaping from the trap if you like.

One of the really inspiring stories that I’ve read in recent times that epitomizes the whole concept of post traumatic growth. This is a key idea in the field of positive psychology the describes how people grow, get better and stronger after episodes of trauma or any kind of hardship in life. The tough times create a better person not a worse person. Vinesh Sukumaran even reads out her message to the world verbatim to ensure that it’s captured in its completeness. A motivating podcast for anyone with not just Rheumatoid Arthritis but any illness or in a tough life situation.

If you’ve been even slightly sensitive to your feelings and emotions, you probably know that happiness and sadness are not merely either-or phenomena. There are shades of happiness and sadness. In this podcast, Vinesh Sukumaran explains the five levels of happiness and specifically highlights what you could do to prevent yourself from spirally downward and feeling sad and later miserable. He also explains a sure shot way to experience more of the higher levels of happiness if you want to.

There’s a whole battalion of people out there who misquote and misinterpret a positive mindset or positivity in general. It’s also seen as cheesy, fake and trying too hard in some circles. Anything that gets you through tough times, makes you love life more and feel a lot happier can’t be that bad for you. This podcast highlights one of the big myths that people have about being positive and how looking at rather than running away from the negative stuff is an incredibly positive behaviour. While you’re at it, also learn ways to look at and demystify things that might be threatening you in your own life.

There’s not greater feeling than being at peace with where you are, who you are, the way you do everything and all other dimensions of your personality. Vinesh Sukumaran reiterates this fundamental truth to his listeners and relates interesting phenomena like the Missing Tile Syndrome and the Tetris Effect as he tells you how to start appreciating yourself more. The way you are is perfect and nothing needs to change about that mindset and the related positive behaviours unless you truly want it to.

Are there things that have perpetually been on your “bucket list”? How about starting to do some of them? Vinesh Sukumaran explains how silly it might often be to wait and put away the very things that you love to do when you should actually be doing them right now. Doing what you love is a positive behaviour and this podcast talks about ways to start doing them and get done with the wait.

Have you ever experienced those moments when you feel hollow or incomplete inside? Vinesh Sukumaran alludes to the temporary nature of such feelings and highlights specific ways to get out of them and start feeling more complete. In short, completeness is a positive behaviour that anyone can demonstrate by just learning to do a few things right. This podcast focuses on three of them.
