Framework Radio's International Women's Day special, hosted by Manja Ristić, celebrates women from across the globe through their unique sonic histories. I am always very inspired and happy to contribute to Framework afield. This time, I decided to offer a slightly unusual episode! The mix of conceptual, ambient, improv, and field recording works by some of the most incredible musical minds out there, a kind of alchemical soup in which I am searching for music within music.
This time I came up with a little experiment: juxtaposing a sound piece, "Kuda plovi ovaj brod? Where is this ship sailing", with the magnificent works of others, by building an emotional palimpsest of moments and places in which all sound works were made, but most of all, by building a mutual content from the psychological material embedded in chosen works. It is a “soundtrack” for a sound piece, made around a very important topic – marine noise pollution and its effects on living systems in the South Adriatic’s littoral belt.
the summer is busying up - back at framework HQ now for a two week window between travels, unsure if i'm going to find the time to get a summer issue of framework:seasonal out into the world, but there's still a chance. meanwhile, some releases i've really been looking forward to getting into the show, loren chasse, standard grey, bethan kellough, kate carr, old friends ben owen and alan courtis working together, it's a smorgasbord of great sounds! we're taking a few weeks off from our usual aporee maps segment, just to try to squeeze in a new more things from the waiting list before our summer break, but it will be back in the autumn, fear not. meanwhile, we've got two more regular editions (and two more afields) before our august hiatus, so plenty more sounds to come.

These radio programs emerged as the fruit of the creative residency that brought together four sound artists - Thelmo Cristovam (BR), EdBrass (BR), Rodrigo Ramos (BR) and Dave Phillips (Switzerland), from the sound material captured in 2006 by Thelmo Cristovam and in 2011 by Dave Phillips, both in the Amazon rainforest. The sound records of 2006, digitized and restored in the first phase of this project by Thelmo Cristovam, now resurface revisited and reimagined in the creation of the pieces in this series.
Program 1: Day & Night - by Thelmo Cristovam Two parts, day and night, based on Thelmo's field recordings without manipulation, using only minimal layers and editing. the first part, day, is composed exclusively of daytime recordings, in the second part, the same thing, with nighttime recordings. Additional daytime and nighttime recordings from Dave Phillips' sources were selected in collaboration.
yet another landmark (earmark? soundmark?): edition #850! in the old days every jubilee show came with it's own celebrations, releases, special editions, etc, but they come around so quickly now, and without warning, that we just can't keep up. so no big fanfare for this one, just a few extra exclamation marks, and the vague hope that you appreciate 850 hours of framework radio and hope, as we do, for 850 more.
so on to the show! lo-fi phone-recorded sounds this week from the duo of russ waterhouse and mary staubitz; the latest release from perennial framework favorite manja ristić; the discovery of one-we-missed from 2020 by jack patterson (more coming soon from the big pile of ferns releases we recently picked up); the first sirr-ecords release on the show since 2007?? (is that possible??) featuring plant-themed new works by steve peters, marco scarassatti ans slavek kwi; an unreleased well full of frogs sent to us by madga lampropoulou; and an intro recorded in west virginia by northern irish artist and regular contributor barry cullen.
Magneto Mori: Brussels is a process-based sound work that investigates the collective memory of Brussels residents, intertwining them with the environmental sounds of the city to weave new and unexpected narratives. It is an exploration of tape recording as a form of memory storage - and the deliberate distressing, eroding and deterioration of present day sounds to disrupt their chronology; historicising the present and fast-forwarding the effects of time. Contrasting and combining these sounds with higher fidelity recordings draws attention to the different substrata of time that are an intrinsic (though largely unacknowledged) part of any non-realtime sound production.
The intention here was to create a ‘memory tape’ that acts as an audio portrait of the city and its inhabitants. This involved asking people to recall their earliest or most vivid memories and recording them direct to open reel tape. On the other side of the tape everyday sounds of the city were captured.
Through a series of processes that mirror the complexity and frailty of human memory this ‘memory tape’ was then fragmented, muddled, corroded, partially erased with magnets, buried in the ground for 10 days and finally excavated and reconstituted. During this process sounds and memories are literally erased and the remains are spliced back together in a random sequence. The end result is a cut-up collage of fragmented voices and distorted field recordings. In some instances I chose to ‘re-construct’ parts of the missing memories using copies made of the original recordings.
In counterpoint, a semi-autobiographical text by Elodie A. Roy reflecting on her parents memories of Brussels is interspersed throughout the piece appearing as a series of answerphone messages.
four great new releases this week (one a re-release) from some longtime favorites, one of whom is appearing in the show for the first time. before i relocated to france as a young man, way back in 1996, long before the internet (well, other than album-trading usenet groups), i wrote a letter, yes, on paper, to eric la casa, half of one of my favorite projects at the time, syllyk, asking for advice on finding underground experimental music upon my arrival in paris. this was of course long before framework, long before murmer even, and who'd've thunk that here, 28 years later, i'd be playing his new solo release on my radio show to thousands of listeners from framework HQ in estonia. and it is, if i may say so, stunning. constructed entirely from contact mic recordings of movable barriers in public space (heras fencing, contruction barriers, safety gates, etc), it sings with wind and human activated voices from the parc de la villette in paris.meanwhile, angélica castelló has somehow (we're not sure how that happened) never been on the show before, but her new release on one of our favorite labels, gruenrekorder (and that's not just because they released a murmer lp in 2016, ahem), corrects that. the tracks are short, so we selected 8 of them, dense collages of fragments from multiple sources, gathered together as a study of the finite. france jobin leans the other way, with a meditation on string theory in sound, in a re-release of her 2008 work of the same name, remastered and including some new tracks. and drøne (is it pronounced 'dreun'? we're not sure.) return for a second time to the show with a shimmering chorus of almost orchestral collage of sounds and fragments of dialogue.
this edition of framework:afield has been has been produced in estonia by your regular host in celebration of the 21st birthdays of framework radio and resonance fm. it features the first ever 20 minutes of framework radio, with mcginley (sounding remarkably young and unfit for radio) and his original co-host joel stern, originally broadcast on june 14, 2002, followed by a 40-minute birthday special recorded at framework HQ in 2020 and aired on resonance fm, but never aired as part of the regular program. some notes written about the birthday special in 2020:may 1st was resonance fm's 18th birthday. june 14th will be framework radio's 18th birthday. coincidence? not at all - framework was born in the studios of resonance fm in london, as part of resonance's initial wave of experimental programming on their initially temporary, but soon to become permanent new art radio endeavour. we are proud to have been there at the beginning, and even prouder to still call resonance our spiritual home, even as we now reside in another country and air on 11 other radio stations as well. we wouldn't be here without resonance fm, and we can't thank them enough for all the opportunities this wild ride has brought us.

A World Behind This World is a composed soundscape created from sounds recorded on location at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire and the surrounding areas.
Depending on how you look at it - this is either an expanded version of the album released on Persistence of Sound earlier this year - or a condensed version of the original two-and-a-half-hour longform broadcast produced for Scottish Sculpture Workshop’s radio station, Lumsden Live in 2021.
In addition to sounds of the rural environment - recordings of various machines, equipment and processes from the workshop feature heavily. 'Performed' by technician, Eden Jolly, sound sources include the copper guillotine, extractor fans, electrical saws, drills, the furnace, welding torches, anvils, hydraulic jacks, sanding machines, grinders and electric hoists. The piece also features a recurring refrain made from the eerie sounds of the wood pellet burner that kept me awake for most of the night when I was staying on site.
getting into the autumn flow now, with our second regular edition back since our summer break. we've had this mola self-release waiting for airplay for far too long - it's from 2019. but better late than never! and we consistently love what comes out of the helen scarsdale agency, and not just because they release our own murmer sounds - our old boston buddies howard stelzer and brendan murray have put together another beautiful slab of tonal residue here. we also have new releases on both the mappa and forms of minutiae labels, both relatively young publishes who have have so far impressed us greatly with the scope of consistent quality of their releases. here we're exploring works on those labels by alexandra spence and diane barbé, respectively. with these releases we have our latest batch of listener chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps, and a bouncy framework introduction recorded on a trampoline in ireland by regular contributor william denton, voiced by the jumpers.

When I pitched my idea for this Framework:afield episode I was on an 11 date UK tour with the band I play in, visiting the major cities in England and Scotland. As I always do now, I took my trusty field recording equipment with me with the idea of capturing what it sounds like to be on tour. A bit like they say in the Spinal Tap film, “the sights, the sounds, the smells of a hard working rock band on the road”.
Many people will have attended live music events but unless you’re the one performing you might not know what it sounds like back stage. In this episode you’ll hear what I heard on the road in the UK and Europe during tours between March and early June 2022. As you’ll hopefully gather, it’s not all glamour, there’s a lot of heavy equipment being moved around, and while each day is different they are also quite similar.
The sounds presented here are not in chronological order, but instead weave a narrative from start to finish; from flying out to start the tour, right through to the final live show, and packing up afterwards, and everything in between. I hope you enjoy the ride.
it's always nice to be able to combine artists new to out ears with artists who helped shape our ears in the first place. it was almost 25 years ago when we first heard illusion of safety on the radio (it was their 1994 release, water seeks its own level, played on no commercial potential on boston's wzbc) - that was when there were no online archives or published playlists and you just had to hope that the dj would tell you what you heard so you could scribble down the name, or your best approximation of what you thought they said, and head down to your favorite record store (or photocopied mailorder catalog) and see if you could find it. luckily, i did find it, and now, decades later, maybe someone else will hear IOS for the first time on this show, and the cycle will continue.

Aki Onda has channeled the spirit of the late Korean artist Nam June Paik via radio transmission in Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me (2017/2021). Paik is known for his association with shamanism, a practice that consistently surfaces in his works. With a portable radio in hand, Onda communicates with his spirit from a distance—collecting field recordings of cryptic broadcasts and messages on anonymous radio stations. The series of séances has been conducted in different cities across the globe, beginning in Seoul, Korea in 2010 and continuing in Cologne, Germany in 2012, Wrocław, Poland in 2013, and Lewisburg, United States in 2014. This work was originally commissioned by documenta 14’s radio program “Every Time A Ear di Soun” in 2017. From March 26 to June 5, 2022, Aki Onda will present Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me, through microbroadcasting and printed matter at the Toronto Biennial of Art. Broadcasting over two frequencies (88.5 FM and 106.5 FM) that cover the exhibition site of 72 Perth Ave in Toronto, radios are placed as part of the exhibition to symbolize sound waves in the air. The audio work exists as invisible yet discrete and perceptible through the proper medium, recalling the ritual of channeling spirits. Bring your own radio to catch the frequencies. Onda is also bringing Nam June’s Spirit Was Speaking to Me to the international radio waves in a series of international public programs. The program will play, uninterrupted and in its entirety of 50 minutes. For Onda, those broadcasts are a response to how Nam June Paik spread his ideas through TV cable networks and connected to a large number of people at a global scale.

Kia Ora - Here are some of my favorite recordings I have quietly accumulated over the years, through some less accessible parts of New Zealand. When it comes to ecological recording, I don’t like to ear brush audio environments, so each sound you hear will be largely unedited, with occasional light high pass filtering for those low frequency wind noises. To close the work is a short piece recorded in the Waipoua Kauri forests, played on Kōauau by the talented Conrad Marsh, reconnecting human and environment through our strong Māori heritage. Comissioned by the Emschergenossenschaft U was exploring the soundscape of the Emscher River and making its conversion audible - from an open wastewater channel to a renaturalized and diversely revitalized watercourse. As of the end of 2021 the Emscher is officialy free of sewage, so my recordings of the dirt water are the last audio document of 100+ year history of the dirtiest river of Germany. In my two minute collage on Youtube (https://youtu.be/QNll4Ps8sJU) you can listen to a comparison between the dirty and the clean Emscher. i love it when i discover that artists whose work i love know one another and are working together, as has happened with my discovery of yen-ting hsu's collaborative recording documents with yannick dauby - 2 volumes of recordings from chiayi in southern taiwan. we're exploring vol.1 in this edition, and we'll come back for vol.2 some time in the coming months.
we're also listening to some fine minimal textures on a new self-release by willem sannen, a short work on cronica electronica by miguel a. garcia, an unreleased work which can be heard on soundcloud by mathias guilbaud, a gem in the prolific output of canadian label empreintes digitals by roxanne turcotte (is anyone else reminded of totoro's flute playing at the debut of her track les oiseaux de nias?), an audio portrait of the river in the hometown, the charles, by ana laura malmaceda, and a nice old-time mountain music intro recorded for us in athens, alabama (yes, there's one there too) by ben link collins.

There’s a lot that I could tell you about Big Bend, but I think for the sake of these recordings there are only two main bits of information you need to know. First, as I said, Big Bend is on the U.S. Mexico Boarder, where in years prior the pandemic tourists could cross the Rio Grande River into Mexico to spend a day in a small town called Boquillas. Since the border closing between the United States and Mexico, which fortunately will be ending soon, Boquillas has been completely cut off from tourism, which makes for the vast majority of the towns income for it’s 250-300 residence. However, everyday tourists wade through the usually shallow waters to set foot in Mexico, and residence of Boquillas cross the border to fish, move ranch animals, and to layout displays of trinkets, jewelry, and souvenirs for U.S. tourists in Big Bend to purchase by placing money in a jar or aluminum coffee can, purely relying on the honor system. The second thing you need to know is about the geological history of how Big Bend came to be. The mixture of flat desert and abrupt extrusions of land into mountains and canyons is the result of something called the Western Interior Seaway, which was a body of water that bisected North America from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean up until around 60 million years ago. Since then, rising tectonic plates and volcanic eruptions have raised the land above sea level. we've been a fan of éric la casa's work since he was half of syllyk back in the early 90's - it's as if his technique and aesthetic have developed along the same trajectories as our ears, and once again he doesn't fail to impress with his new everyday unknown series of abstract sound constructions. they blended nicely with the geographic captures of nikki sheth (south africa), jeff gburek (bulgaria) and paula schopf (chilé). we topped it all off with sounds from italy, canada, russia and czechia from the aporee soundmaps, and an introduction full of hailstones from northern ireland.

On 18 July 2021* members of Heya Collective simultaneously live streamed for 1 hour, from Turkey, UK, Lebanon and Egypt, the sounds of their immediate surroundings in response to the call out for World Listening Day 2021 (link: https://www.worldlisteningproject.org/world-listening-day-2021-the-unquiet-earth/). It emerged for us as time to come together apart, listening to the audible and contemplating the positioning of the callout and our experiences of the pandemic, as female field recordists, our relationship to one another and to the environment. The end result was not quiet, let alone ‘beyond the threshold of human hearing’, but an interpersonal and interspecies dialogue (often precisely because of the absence of each other and of other species’ audibility in those moments) of dispersed but connected ‘noisy’ realities.
