Comic book culture has invaded our everyday life. No longer a niche interest, these stories, and superheroes have become a part of our mainstream culture. Join Robbie Landis and Ben Morse for the Other Identity, as they discuss headlines and issues ranging from the comic books themselves to the Silver Screen.
Disney Plus and Marvel Studio's newest comic book series Loki has captured the minds and hearts of fans just as we knew it would. It's managed to separate itself in a single episode of the two series that have came before it. Robbie and Ben talk about the importance of allowing Loki's character to change in a meaningful and long-lasting impactful way.
They also take a look back at Marvel Studios TV shows of the past, from Agents of Shield to the Netflix shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. How have the changed and evolved and how could Marvel bring them back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
At one point the CW Universe, originally dubbed the Arrowverse, was the best comic book to TV adaptation in the world. From Arrow to Flash, Supergirl to Black Lightning, there was no one who could hold a candle to it. But, after nearly a decade is that still true? Is the Greg Berlanti ran superhero universe still the best on the market or have they fallen behind the lives of Marvel, Amazon or even Netflix?
Despite most of their shows being much older, there may still be hope for newcomers like Stargirl and Superman and Lois. Ben and Robbie also talk about the future of the CWverse and if there is anything the comic counterparts can do to save it.
Loki is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney + starting June 9th. The third Marvel series to premiere on the streaming platform, it will follow the Avenger's incarnation of Loki as he teams up with the Time Variance Authority to sew the timeline he ruptured back into place. Robbie and Ben talk about their expectation and their fears.
Plus, in 2004 Marvel released a 4 issue Loki comic book that was the definitive story of the trickster god. Does that book still hold up or has Tom Hiddleston and other more recent portrayals of the character reinvented the true king of Jotunheim?
DC Comics surprised the internet with three big announcements out of the animated universe last week. A reimagining of the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, complete with the original artist Bruce Timm as well as JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves. Along with that, a new Superman Animated Series will also be created, both of these for HBO Max.
Plus, the hit fighting game from DC Comics 'Injustice' which birthed an entire Elseworld-like story in DC comic books continuity will also be getting an animated movie adaptation. Robbie and Ben go through each of these projects and talk about their hopes and dreams and their fondness for what came before.
Since Disney acquired Fox and the Fantastic Four and X-Men returned home to Marvel Studios, fans have been clamoring to find out when they will enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A few weeks ago Marvel dropped a Fantastic Four teaser and Ben and Robbie has started to prepare with a Fantastic Four Essential comic book reading list.
Robbie and Ben walk you through some of the best FF comic books throughout the year for beginners and veterans alike to jump in or brush up on their FF knowledge. Plus, they discuss what a Fantastic Four movie would need to be successful this late in the MCU.
Last week Marvel dropped a new trailer confirming and hyping up the next three years worth of movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Black Widow to a teaser for the Fantastic Fours, 11 titles comprise the next phase of the MCU.
Robbie and Ben go through each title and talk about what to expect, but just based on what we know so far but also on the comic book lore and history. Ultimately, they ask where is the next big story going and who could be the next Thanos-level threat that the next generation of super heroes have to face?
Darkseid is a name nearly every DC fan should know, but the group he's part of, The New Gods, might be a little less known. Ben gives us a crash course in the New Gods, including how they were created by comic book legend Jack Kirby.
But the real meat of the episode is about his adopted son, the hero known as Mister Miracle. Robbie and Ben dive into and break down the 12 issues series of Mister Miracle by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. They discuss what makes it different from normal comics, why it's a great single read, and how it relates to Tom Kings 'The Vision' and WandaVision.
With the epic conclusion to the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) leaves behind the mantle of the Falcon and becomes our New Captain America. With only 6 episodes in the series, all characters involved had quite the journey. Robbie and Ben break down their thoughts, talk about everyone from Sharon to Karli to Bucky and Sam.
They also discuss the legacy of Steve Rogers and the Shield and how Sam, Bucky and John Walker all lived up to that legacy.
The X-Men have entered into a whole new era since the reboot of House of X and Power of X. Robbie and Ben talk about the latest cross-over event to hit Marvel Unlimited, X of Swords. Robbie describes it as the X-Men's anime tournament arc meets Alice in Wonderland. Is it worth picking up?

2021 is shaping up to be a big year for Super Heroes (And Villains') as Black Widow and the Suicide Squad head towards their theatrical debut. Not a sequel but also not a reboot, James Gunn is bringing the action with new and familiar faces in his Suicide Squad movie. From King Shark to John Cena as Peacemaker, both Robbie and Ben can hardly contain their excitement.
Plus, after over a year of delays, Black Widow, which was originally suppose to kick off Marvel Phase 4, is coming to both Theaters and Disney Plus. Thanks to the new trailer, Robbie has an interesting new theory on what to expect.

We're only weeks away from Zack Snyder's The Justice League debuting on HBO Max. In the wake of several interviews with Snyder about the new movie, Ben and Robbie took another swing at the topic. Ben finally watched the original Justice League and they asked themselves, "Whose fault is it that the movie failed?" Unbiased, with all expectations put aside, they talk about the successes and failures of Justice League.
They also talk about whether or not Snyder has what it takes to deliver a good Justice League film and what the movie would need to succeed.
The Green Lantern Corps aren't the only ring slinger's in the galaxy. The Green Lantern mythos is one of the richest and deepest in DC Comics, despite having only expanded to such in the last couple decades. Robbie and Ben tackle one of the most influential crossover events in Green Lantern history, the Sinestro Corp Wars.
This 18 issue event saw the creation of the Yellow Lantern Corp and would eventually pave the way for the Blackest Night crossover event that some say is one of the biggest and best crossovers in comics history.

The year of 2021 is going to be massive for Marvel and DC movies. From Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow to Suicide Squad and The Eternals, the year is packed to the gills with Superheroes. But that's not all, because of the pandemic, both studios have movies ready to go and in the production pipe. Plus, many movies are finally going back into filming. The Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to move over! The DC Universe may be divisive among fans thanks to flops like Batman v Superman and Justice League. Though gems such as Wonder Woman and Shazam have helped to repair its image a bit. The real strength in DC Comics filmmaking is with their Animated movies. With a lineage that goes back further than the MCU and with twice as many entries, DC knows how to make animated movies. In fact, most people don't realize they just wrapped up the end of their Animated Universe continuity. In doing so, they've set themselves up to create something that even rivals the Marvel Universe on the silver screen. The only question is, will DC use their upcoming animated universe movies to do so?

Who will be the new X-Men in the MCU? With the mutants film rights squarely back in the hands of Disney and Marvel, it's only a matter of time. Ben invites his two friends Greg and Nick to talk Green Lantern with him and Robbie. One of the things that set the Green Lanterns apart from other heroes, super teams, and families as Nick points out, is that anyone can be a Green Lantern. That there are always thousands of Green Lanterns that represent an unending cast of diverse races, ideologies, and creeds. The cast talks about their favorite green lanterns and some of the best stories for new readers to get into the series.

One of the strengths it has over Batman or Superman is that if you're not into one character, there are so many others that may interest you. Kyle Raynor, Guy Gardener, John Stewart, or Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. If you're not a Green Lantern fan yet, take another look until you find one you like.
The HBO Max Series
The round table of Green Lantern experts also takes some time to talk about the forthcoming Green Lantern series coming to HBO Max. Variety released a statement with some of the plot details of the upcoming series. It mentions how the show won't focus on a single Green Lantern, but many of them, including new characters. Some of those Lanterns include Guy Gardener, Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz by name. It also talks about how Sinestro, the former Green Lantern and one of the most iconic villains of the series, will be featured as well.
The show will focus on the history and origins of the Green Lantern corp. It's currently unclear if fan-favorite characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan will make an appearance or be referenced in the first season. But the Green Lantern Roundtable doesn't think that will be much of an issue.

From the first Iron Man and the forgotten Hulk movie, up through Captain America: Civil War (aka Avengers 2.5) and onwards to the Endgame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe boosts 23 movies of varying quality. While there may be stinker or two among them, they are for the most part an assortment of great superhero flicks. Robbie and Ben attempt to come together as one cohesive unit and rank them definitively. Spoilers: that doesn't happen, compromises must be made and they're made as soon as the 22nd entry.
Warning: this episode of The Other Identity will anger you. You will seethe with rage, you will shout at no one in particular and likely stomp off to social media to tell us how wrong we are. Good. Do it. Listen to this compromised version of the rankings and know that no matter how you think Avengers: Age of Ultron should be...it's not high enough. Know that Ben did Doctor Strange a great injustice. Know, good listener, that the perfect rankings of these movies do not exist, but this is probably as close as anyone will ever get.

Justice League Vs Avengers
It's a question as old as comic books themselves. Who would win a fight against the two greatest teams the world of nerds has ever known. The real answer is probably that they wouldn't fight...but both movies, comics and TV shows have given us interesting reasons why some caped crusaders might duke it out. In order to facilitate the discussion the Ben stepped back and served as the intermediary of the debate. Robbie would take the Avengers and Kevin the Justice League. Prior to the show both Robbie and Kevin submitted a 7 member roster of former Avenger and Justice League members. Ben was in charged matching up the two rosters to form interesting duels and it was then on Robbie and Kevin to debate who would win each.
Who Will Be The Victor?
The match-ups weren't as straight forward as you might think, with the first bout against the son of the Magneto, Quicksilver and the Justice League's tech-infused Cyborg. Ben didn't make any decisions on who the winners were based on the arguments. That's up to you, the listeners. Listen to the episode and decide for yourself who you think won the most matches. This Weeks Reading
Each Week on the Other Identity Robbie and Ben talk about what they're currently reading. Ben just wrapped up the Night of the Monster Men Arc in Batman, Nightwing, and Detective Comics and had a revelation. He thinks that out of all of the Bat-Family, Batman is actually the least interesting of them. Robbie agrees but points out that each Bat-Family member relies on Bruce and Batman in some way to push their own stories forward. After putting out a poll on social media, Robbie has decided to read through Marvel's Secret Empire arc. However, he's somewhat daunted by the nearly 300-page Prelude book.
The Immortal Hulk
The main topic of this week's episode is the Jade Giant himself, the Hulk. Robbie and Ben spend some time discussing the strengths (not literally) of the character. Why he works or doesn't work as a hero and the best way to present Bruce Banner and his green alter ego, be it on the page or on the big screen. They eventually come to the current run of the Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing. Ben explains what makes this series so great and how it manages to seamlessly roll in and explain years of Hulk cannon while also expanding and exploring new lore for the Hulk. Robbie compares what Ewing has done with the Immortal Hulk to what Geoff Johns did with the Lantern Corp when he introduced the color spectrum.

This week on The Other Identity, Robbie and Ben discuss some of the recent titles they've been reading. Ben has immersed in Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing and convinces Robbie to give a try as well. Immortal Hulk is currently on Issue #34 and Marvel recently announced the series would be ending with Issue #50. For any fans who love the series, they can rest easy knowing an Immortal She-Hulk series is in the works. Robbie talks about his experience with Kelly Thompson's run of Jessica Jones. He compares her writing of the Blind Spot and Purple Daughter story arcs with what he loved about Ultimate Spider-Man.
DC Universe and Batman
Robbie also takes Ben through some of the big headlines that hit the comic and superhero world over the past few weeks. They start with a comment from Zack Snyder about his DC Movie Universe. The Robin suit fans see in Batman v Superman belongs to a dead version of Dick Grayson, the original Robin. Ben and Robbie express their displeasure in this news as Dick Grayson goes on to be a hero in his own right, Nightwing. They cover other stories like DC entering the podcast space and San Diego Comic Con going online.
Finally, rumors are out that DC has found it's replacement for Ben Affleck's Batman. These rumors come on the heels of the Flash Movie starring Ezra Miller. Originally, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was rumored to play Thomas Wayne's version of Batman in the Flashpoint movie. But now rumors are coming out that Michael Keaton will be taking up the cape and cowl in Flashpoint. However, he won't be portraying Thomas Wayne, but will simple replace Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne.

Former co-host and Other Identity Alumni Kali Sloan joins Robbie and Ben to celebrate Pride Month. They talk about Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, one of the original X-Men and his evolution as a character. Iceman is one of the biggest and most well-known X-Men and years came out as Gay in the comics. Ben being a huge Iceman fan, talks about how natural and right it felt for the character. They also discuss Batwoman and some of the problematic issues DC has had with the character in the past. Kali explains the importance of proper representation in comics.
Kali also talks about her own experiences with comics growing up, and shares her story of learning she's transgender. She talks about the importance of representation in comic books and how having a trans character to look to could have made a big difference in her life. The group also discusses when we'll see a strong transgender character in comics, and discusses whether it should be Marvel or DC to attempt it.

This week Robbie and Ben caught up with they've been reading in their spare time. Ben continues to work through his read of the Blackest Night storyline. Robbie finished his #InBlackestNight challenge weeks ago, but Ben has barely scratched the surface. As Robbie continues his #DCRebirthEraChallenge he talks about how much he's loving Supergirl. He also expresses his hopes and dreams for the series long-term.
Several months ago a discussion sparked on Twitter about comic book deaths. Whether or not bringing back a dead character invalidates the weight of the original death. One of Ben's favorite stories is the Death of Barry Allen in the Crisis on Infinite Earth's crossovers. Robbie thinks that the Death of Spider-Man in the Ultimate Timeline is one of the best stories from Marvel. Where the two differ, is that Robbie doesn't think bringing a character back hurts the original story. They discuss at length, if Barry Allen's resurrection is worth it or if Wally West actually suffers more as a character.
It doesn't stop with death in comics though. Despite the short history of the comic book movie or TV show, there are a few examples to draw from there as well. Robbie and Ben use the death and Resurrection of Agent Coulson from Avengers and Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. to keep the discussion going.

The News
The past few months have contained quite a few big headlines for comics fans, despite a lot of distributors halting production. That includes the release of the animated movie Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, which marks the end of the DC Comics Animated Universe. James Gunn also teased that someone major would die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Plus, Henry Cavill announces he will be returning the DC Comics Cinematic Universe as Superman.
The Snyder Cut
The other big news shaking the comic book world is that HBO Max, a new streaming platform for HBO will release the Snyder Cut, or rather help to finish it. The Snyder Cut isn't actually done and HBO estimates it would take some $30 Million dollars to finish it. Robbie and Ben are joined by a new member of The Other Identity team, Kevin Kelly, to discuss what this means across the board for the world of superhero fans.

Ben and Robbie welcome Kelly Thompson to the Other Identity. Kelly got her start in comics writing licensed properties like Jem and the Holograms and Power Rangers. She eventually debuted at Marvel during Secret Wars in 2015 with Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps. She wrote the Eisner-nominated Hawkeye series starring Kate Bishop before signing exclusively with Marvel in 2018. Since then she has worked on Mr. & Mrs. X, Jessica Jones, Uncanny X-Men, West Coast Avengers, and more. She’s currently writing Captain Marvel and Deadpool, as well as the recently launched Black Widow.
Kelly talks her through her own origin story, including her first comic book and when she fell in love with superheroes. She explains to Robbie and Ben that she never considered writing comic books a dream job until it had already happened. Plus, she recalls how she first came to work with Marvel and what led to her signing with them as an exclusive writer. Ben and Robbie also put her through a lightning round of questions to better get to know her geek-side. Is she an X-Men or an Avengers fan? The Marvel Villains bracket draws closer to its conclusion. As we head into the semi-finals Magneto the master of magnetism goes up against Loki the God of Mischief. On the other side we have Ultron duking it out with Thanos, two of the Avenger's all-time greatest foes. Robbie and Ben take the time to talk about some of their favorite superheroes. While heroes may have started out as adults in the Golden Age, the Silver Age started to introduce us to sidekicks. They were almost always younger versions of the titular hero. Normally differentiated by adding 'kid' or "lad' onto their name. Such as Kid Flash or Aqualad. But over the years they've grown and become more than that. In the best cases, they didn't even start out at sidekicks but as heroes all their own.

It’s been a busy few months for comics and rumors within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Everything from the Guardians of the Galaxy allegedly showing up in Thor 4. To Charlie Cox reprising his role of Daredevil in the next Spider-Man solo film. Plus, New Warriors just launched a new team of teenage heroes and two of them are at the center of a debate. Psychically connected twins Snowflake and Safespace are just the latest additions to the Marvel pantheon of heroes. Some people think that the names are just a bit too on the nose may be virtue signalling.
Plus, Ben assigned Robbie to read one of his favorite stories in the Marvel library, Marvels Annotated. It’s a take on the creation of the Marvel universe through key events such as the appearance of the Human Torch, the X-Men and the first time Galactus visited earth. Ben loves it, but Robbie has some reservations…
