A performer’s greatest fear. They walk on stage preparing to dance, sing and act, but they are frozen. Elma Linz Kanefield experienced this firsthand when she was a singer in New York when she was unable to make a sound at an audition. She wanted to know why.
Soon after this incident Elma, a licensed clinical social worker became a specialist in the psychology of the performing arts. For decades she has helped hundreds of artists in New York City and around the world with the challenges they face. I am excited to talk with Elma about how performers can reach their performance potential onstage and off. Let's get started with Elma Linz Kanefield.
We are often heading towards burnout when we hustle too hard and too long for worthiness. For performing artists, this can be hard to avoid. Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by too much stress over a long period of time. The best thing to do? I'll share what I do in this episode.

Season Finale! How to Reach Your Performance Potential Onstage and Off. - At an audition, a young woman walked on stage and prepared herself to sing, but when she opened her mouth there was no sound. This story sounds like a nightmare, but for Elma Linz Kanefield it was very real and life-changing. She wanted to understand how and why this “stage fright” happens and what makes some performers succeed while others struggle. Elma’s trauma inspired her to become one of the world’s only specialists in the psychology of the performing artist. In this interview, Elma shares how she empowers performers and restores their mental health in her new book Hamlet’s Mirror: Reaching Your Performance Potential Onstage and Off. Elma defines Performance Potential as “being the best you can be and doing the best you can do based on what you know in the moment of performance.” This is an internal state when you are emotionally and mentally able to balance the challenges, fears, and insecurities that can come with entertaining others. In Hamlet’s Mirror, Elma explores the performer’s culture: its challenges, the highs, and the lows.

About guest Matthew McCaulley - Matthew McCaulley is the Producer/Director of Light of Life Films was born in Indiana. Growing up he was captivated by the power that film had to convey a message and move people on an emotional level. Matt worked for a major defence contractor for many years. The passion for Film he had developed as a youth however was re-ignited after working on a small promotional video project for a local homeless shelter. Matt and his family moved to Missouri to help plant a church and was there that he realized once again the power of cinema to move people. Matt is most passionate about the creative side of filmmaking, mainly directing and is currently creating the new film unDEFILED and the unDEFILED project.
