If you're new to writing, you've probably read the title of this episode and thought, "Oh, great, my scenes need to turn, now." Or perhaps you're not new to writing, heard this term before, and you're thinking, "I don't think so."

Before you hit the pause, please hear me out.

Value shifts are a great way to ensure that each scene moves the story forward and pulls its weight. I also realise that I'm not the first person to discuss turning a scene or value shifts in the writing space. But I want to assure you that I don't want to add more confusion to the mix or discuss this topic in a way that is overly complicated. That's why I've called this The Beginner's Guide.

In this beginner's guide, I will define the term value shifts or the concept of the turning of a scene, explain how a scene turns, and share non-spoiler-y examples from the mystery and romance genres. Also, I'll show you how to check if your scenes turn and move the story forward. On top of this, I'll demonstrate how to fix a scene that doesn't turn.

I loved talking to him about Aristotle for Novelists because it reminded me of my screenwriting roots, and it was nice to look back on my writing journey. I'm back again. And yes, it's been sixteen weeks since I released an episode of the podcast. Between now and November, I took December and January off because it's a busy time of year and I tend to travel during these periods. So, I have a confession to make. Actually, I've been struggling to sell paid books. Sure, I can give them away for free, but paid is a different problem altogether. I've been struggling to sell Duplicity, the second book in my James Lalonde Amateur Sleuth Mystery Series. Honestly, I can't believe I made it this far; it's mind-blowing. I know that's cliche, but it's how I feel when I see that episode number. Let's just say it has been a wild ride, a ride that is not yet over, and I'm glad I stuck with podcasting through those difficult times. And I've dabbled with a few great interviews and had my first-ever guests. It's been both challenging and fun all at once.

In the spirit of celebrating the 100th episode milestone, I'm going answer the top questions asked by my Blog Readers, YouTube Subscribers, and Podcast Listeners, and questions asked through my Ask A Question form on my website.

The Questions1. How do I turn a page of notes (637 words) into a story? 2. Should you self-publish an ebook, paperback and audiobook all on the same launch date or separately? 3. Do I need separate ISBNs for a paperback novel published through KDP Print and Ingram Spark? 4. Is it ok to post an unpublished novel on your blog? 5. I've heard that blogging is dead. Is this true, and is it worth doing as a fiction author? 6. Is it better to wait until you have more than one book in a series before 7. When discovery writing, how do you ensure that all the scenes and chapters you write move the story forward and not end up being wasted words that are deleted during revisions? 8. How do I know when it's time to finish revising and start working with an editor? 9. Can you recommend an editor to me? 10. Do I need developmental editing? It's very expensive, and I'm not sure if I can afford to spend that much money. 11. How long did it take for you to get consistent book sales when publishing-wide?

In this episode, discuss what I've been doing in February. I also share my frustrations about a tech fail and newfound thoughts on this product and delve into why I've changed my mind.

So, I decided to list Suspicion for free and promote it using various newsletter book promotion services ahead of the release of the second book in the James Lalonde series. The promotions I booked were with AuthorsXP, Fussy Librarian, Kobo, and Free Booksy; altogether, these promotions cost me £176.67 or US$209.96. I used the Google exchange rate from the 19th of November, just in case you're interested. So, in this behind-the-scenes author diary, I will discuss the results of my experiments with Ad stacking on my first-in-series novella or short novel.

But first, let's discuss my expectations.

My ExpectationsTo be honest, my expectations were relatively low in terms of download numbers. Still, I expected around 2,000 downloads from the Free Booksy promotion only because of an experience in the past. But I was hoping some people would download Suspicion like the store and either follow me on Amazon and buy the next book when it's released or even purchase the preorder. Even though I was hoping for these things, I was pretty pessimistic about the results and knew it was more of an experiment. On top of this, I was terrified that I would receive more harsh reviews or low-rated positive reviews, thanks to my experiences with BookSirens. As a result, I was starting to think this third edition was crappy, and as a result, I was a crappy writer. But that's a story for another time.

This year, I've decided to start my podcast by looking back at everything I achieved in 2022. After that, I will discuss the products I loved in 2022 and will continue to use in 2023. I will also not dive too deeply into metrics like hours or word count because that's not helpful. In fact, as a coach, I hate metrics because it doesn't contribute anything of value, especially in the writing space. Everyone writes differently. Some people need to write slowly, think and research as they write. And if that's you, it's okay to write that way and slowly build your backlist. But I'll hop off my soap box now.

A few weeks ago, I received an email from Plottr letting me know they were interested in chatting with me on my podcast about plotting and story organisation techniques and how Plottr can benefit both Plotters and Pantsers. Because Plottr is a story organisation tool, I thought the interview would be great for this season of The Authorpreneur Podcast because I'm discussing outlining and the pre-writing phase. Also, if you've been thinking about trying Plottr this might help you decide whether the software is right for you. So, in the show, I'm chatting with Troy Lambert about plotting and story organisation techniques with Plottr.

I did stray from the topic and talk about why I'm transitioning from writing with an outline to writing into the dark and my feelings about revision and working with a professional editor. It's been a while since I filmed or recorded a Behind the Scenes Author Diary Update—so that's what I'm going to do. In this episode, I will discuss what I've been doing since January 2022. And this episode isn't going to be scripted, mainly because if I start scripting these episodes, it will take a long time to produce them. Before you put pen to page, you need to decide which point-of-view is right for your story. In this show, I will discuss point-of-view in writing fiction and the things to consider when choosing the right point-of-view for your novel. But I will not discuss second-person because I don't understand its mechanics. And I will not be delving too deep into third-person omniscient point-of-view for similar reasons.

While researching for this episode, I received contradictory advice on how to write in third-person omniscient, especially about whether head-hopping is permitted. In light of this, I'm considering interviewing an editor on my podcast and asking questions about point-of-view in fiction. So, let me know if you are interested in listening to this interview. However, I have experience writing in first-person and third-person point-of-view.

In previous podcast episodes, I've mentioned that I want this podcast to be free of interviews unless they are about how an author writes, outlines or writers without an outline. Today, I'm making an exception with this bonus interview because I believe the discussion will benefit you even if you're in the planning stages of writing your first novel.

As you can guess from the title of this show, I chat with Dave Chesson from Kindlepreneur on writing, editing, formatting, and collaborating with Atticus. So, you've created an outline for your novel. And, now you're ready to start writing. Diving into writing the first draft seems like the first logical step. However, I recommend you slow down and edit the outline for your novel. I learned this lesson the hard way after publishing my first-in-series novella.

To this day, I regret not going back and editing the outline for that novel. There were minor things that were not wrapped up at the end, that I believed wrapped up rather subtly, but the reader needed more clarity around. If I had edited the outline before starting to write the first draft, I would have fixed these issues before they were issues. By the time you get to the revision stage, it's difficult to see all the errors, especially if you're a new writer, and you don't have an established team of beta readers or a critique partner who is a little more seasoned than you.

Since 2014, I've written two novellas, one short story, and two full-length novels, three of which I have self-published. One novel is being rewritten because I wanted to change a story device and plot thread. For me, this second storyline was unrealistic and painted the character in an unprofessional light, thus creating a sense of trust with the reader. I needed the character to be seen as trustworthy for the reader. The second full-length novel is waiting for its turn to be published. After I wrote that novel, I realised the story occurred further on in the series. Between 2011 and 2014, I wrote screenplays, then changed to writing novels when I discovered self-publishing.

But enough about my writing journey.

About this EpisodeIn this episode, I will discuss how I go from a story idea to a fleshed-out outline. I know this is obvious, but this is my process instead of 'the way to outline a novel.' This process has evolved since my very first novel. As I wrote the next story, more steps were added to my intricate outlining approach. After publishing my first novella, in 2020, I added another step to my outlining process, but I will share this in a separate episode because it's a huge step and needs a detailed explanation.

This episode is not scripted because I want it to be a chat about how I outline a novel. In saying that, I have compiled a list of steps and broke down exactly how I outline a story. Each of these steps has a bullet point list of notes to help me stay on track. I'm sharing this with you so you know that I've thought about this episode in detail. Because there is no script, I'm not sure how long this episode will be in terms of minutes. Depending upon the length of the show, I may choose to divide this up into two or three parts, which I will release weekly. The one thing I do know is this first episode will focus on how I create a basic outline, and the subsequent episodes will focus on the steps that make my outline more of a zero draft.

Before I dive into discussing how to outline a novel or the planning phase of writing, I thought it would be best to ask an obvious but nonetheless important question.

Is outlining a good idea? Depending upon who you listen to, you will hear conflicting advice. Some authors will say in order to write quicker, you need to ditch the outlining phase. While others abide by the age-old saying, "fail to plan, plan to fail."

So which option is best for you?

In this episode, I will share the things you need to consider, an important question that you need to ask yourself, a piece of advice that you need to keep in mind, and my recommendations for new writers. On top of this, I talk about the downsides of creating an outline in order to give you a balanced and somewhat unbiased answer to this age-old question.

Up until now, I've wanted the seasons of this podcast to be evergreen and act as a resource on how to write a particular element of a story. My desire to create short evergreen episodes focused on a single topic is the reason this podcast tends to be free of interviews. However, throughout season three, I will share short interviews with other writers discussing how they write stories, and in particular, I will try to interview as many writers who "pants" novels. But these interview episodes will be treated as bonus episodes and will not be the focus of the podcast season.

Revision is like pulling teeth. Well, that's how it feels to me, at the moment. I'm so over revising this story. But at the same time, I feel so insecure about this novella. Long gone is that innocent, naive Amelia, who was excited to publish her first piece of fiction. Perhaps, I know better now. Or, more realistically, I'm more cynical. Writing to market or writing with genre expectations in mind is often seen as a dirty word. And, I think there are a few misconceptions, largely to do with confusing the strategy with writing to a trend which is very different. For the sake of clarity, writing to trend is all about writing what's popular. An example of that strategy is writing a paranormal romance feature vampires because they're hot right now; that's writing to trend. By the way, I have no idea whether that's a hot trend, so don't take that as gospel because it's just an example I plucked from my mind, a few seconds ago. However, writing with genre expectations in mind is all about writing for your audience. I know you want to write what you love, but just hear me out. As a writer, I get it, you need to love what you write, but you also need to write something that others will enjoy and want to stick around for long-term.

What to ExpectBefore we get into the tips, this episode is the first in a two-part series focused on writing with genre expectations in mind. In this first part, I want to focus on writing with genre expectations in mind for writers who haven't written their first draft and merely have a story idea in mind. This episode will be great for you if you have a story idea or outline, and want to write for an existing audience. Part two, which will be in two weeks, will be great for those of you who, have written the first draft or are revising and are concerned there's no market for your book. For some reason, I put off sharing this author diary update because I believed I didn't do that much writing, and I was a little embarrassed. Well, I was partly correct. As I look back over my completed tasks on ToDoist and the notes on my daily writing habit spreadsheet, I realised that my assumption was incorrect. And, I did get some writing done during the first four months of the year. But more on that later. I set Missing to free and scheduled various low budget book promotions during February and March, and I experimented with Facebook Ads with some surprising results. In this show, I share my download statistics, cost per click and click-through rate when these statistics are available. Also, during this period, I started experimenting with multiple streams of income in my author business. I share the thing I've tried and the thing you need to consider when you're just starting.

The results of my very first story origin newsletter swap are in, and it's not what I expected. As I cast my mind back, I decide whether I will do another newsletter swap in the future. And, I share my biggest lessons learned. In November, I managed to secure another free mystery and thriller eBook promotion on Kobo. Due to this change in price on Kobo, I decided change the price to free across all other platforms. This led me to send an email to Amazon asking them to price match Missing on their store. And, it this request had surprising results. While we're on the topic of Amazon, I finally felt brave enough to ask Amazon to lift the preorder penalty on Duplicity. After much deliberation, I come to terms with my struggles with the notion of whether I should continue to write more books in the James Lalonde series. Which leads me to announce that I'm letting myself write another series in a different sub-genre alongside writing the James Lalonde series. I guess the short version of that is I'm writing to market. Yay! In other news, I've had another ah-ha moment about my first book, and that moment has led to another change to my story. It was another one of those decisions I'd been struggling with because I enjoyed writing the book so much. This month, I added an income stream to my author business, and I discuss the steps I took to create the service. While we're on the topic of business-related things, I hired a great alpha reader from the most unlikely of places.

After months of frustration with the slow speed of my website, I took the plunge and moved web hosts. And in this episode, I discuss the dramas with moving from one WebHost to another. Spoiler alert, I’m happy with my move, and I’m wondering why I didn’t do it earlier. But, the move took some time. In September, I found myself lured in by another mystery and thriller free promotion on Kobo. This month I started experimenting with pre-orders, only to discover some terrible news. My efforts on chase reviews are underway, and I share my thoughts on this activity so far. July was full of surprises. A well known free ebook platform shared my novella with its audience. And I’m going to share the results of this with you. While we're on the topic of book marketing, I will also discuss the outcome of my free promotion on Kobo. After careful deliberation, I took steps to self-publish my reader magnet on all stores, and I talk about the reasoning behind this decision. As I was publishing my mystery short story, I had a tonne of pricing issues with Apple. The word nightmare is an understatement. Now, on to the writing-related news. In terms of writing, I had a writing epiphany thanks to a YouTube video, that led me, to make progress with writing Duplicity, which is book two in the James Lalonde series. And I started working on the story idea for Book Three.

In June, I made the decision to opt-out of Kindle Unlimited, and I don’t regret trying it out. Due to this experience, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons which I will put into practice for another series. While I’m on the topic of lessons learned, I also change my focus from sales to getting more book reviews. And I share the steps I plan on taking to make this happen. Even though I’m shifting my focus to book reviews, I share the results of the book promotions I’ve paid for throughout the month. Now, on to the writing-related news. Now that the rewrites of the second edition Missing are finished, during May I prepared the new edition for publication. It’s official, I'm rewriting a self-publish novel, only a few months after it’s initial release. And, that book is Missing. During the first two weeks in March, I made a decision that I never thought that I would make, even after careful consideration. Essentially, I've let go of an ideal and made a decision for business reasons. But, more on that a little later. In terms of pay per click advertising, I share my experiences with Amazon Ads and paying for an ad to promote my offer on my author Facebook page.

Let's just say that things didn't turn out as expected.

And, I want to give an honest account of my experience with Reedsy Discovery because I do believe there is a valuable lesson to be learned, and it’s not about me throwing shade at a company.

I’m back from my hiatus. Due to the pandemic and the lockdown situation in London, and my husband working from home, I paused the podcast. I stopped recording because I was struggling with productivity, writing, and mental health issues that come with being in the same environment for weeks on end. There’s no polite way to say this, but I’ve realised that I’ve written a pile of garbage and may need to completely rewrite the second book in my James Lalonde series. So, the first lesson you’ve learned is to never rush the initial creative brainstorming and outlining phase of writing a story. Just don’t do that.

But, enough of my whinging.

My adventures in book marketing continue, and the journey resembles me rummaging around in the dark because I have no clue about what I’m doing. At the same time, I’m learning a lot in the process, which is actually more important. While I’m on the topic of book marketing, I will be sharing the results of the book promotions I ordered in the previous podcast episode.

Over the years, there has been a big push by some well-meaning people to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket and publish your books to all of the platforms or go wide.

But, is this the best advice for a new author?

In this episode, I’m going to discuss the difference between going wide and enrolling in the KDP Select programme and what you need to consider before deciding. And at the end of this section of the podcast, I’m going to share three actionable steps to help you decide which option is right for you. So, I looked at my podcast in the iTunes store the other day, not only did I realise that I have a few reviews, but I also noticed that this episode is the fiftieth episode of The Authorpreneur Podcast.

Holy, crap!

I can't believe I made it this far.

Let's just say that it's been a long and difficult road, and there were times that I didn't think that I would make it this far. Coming up in this show, I discuss why I migrated away from MailChimp and the steps involved. And, I also discuss my decision to merge my author and writing tips websites. In terms of writing, I will share where I'm at with Missing, Book Two, and the steps I need to take before I start writing my short story.

But, first an update on my favourite cup of tea and what I'm currently reading.

Favourite Cup of TeaAs I'm recording this episode of the podcast diary, I'm drinking a cup of Jasmine Tea by Tea2. One of the reasons why I love drinking Jasmine Tea is because of its delicate flavour. It’s not too overpowering like some other types of green tea. Today, as I’m recording this episode it’s 11:43 am on a Thursday and this is my second cup of green tea of the day. I usually have a cup of Sencha tea with my breakfast.

What I'm Currently ReadingWhile I was on holiday, I ended up not doing any reading. The reason for this is I tend to do the majority of my reading while I'm working on my businesses during the week. Because I was on holiday and spending time with my husband, it was hard to squeeze this into my new holiday mode. To avoid this in the future, I need to incorporate reading into my nighttime routine. I'll let you know how I get on with this.

Actually, now that I've said that I remember that I did read Killing the Top 10 Sacred Cows of Indie Publishing and Killing the Top 10 Sacred Cows of Publishing by Dean Wesley Smith during the first week on my USA Trip while Roland was working. Nevertheless, at present, I'm three books behind my reading goal for the year.

As of last Thursday, I started reading the Temple of the Gods by Andy McDermott while attempting to catch up on my task list for my author and coaching businesses. At the end of last week, I reached the forty-nine percent mark of the story in the Kindle Whisper-sync for Voice edition. I know not everyone loves to be read to, but I obviously do not have that issue.

The Temple of the Gods is the eighth book in the Wilde/Chase Series. At this point in the series, the discovery of Atlantis has already occurred, which is starting to encourage me to purchase the previous books in the series. Even as I say this now, there's a part of me that wants to open Amazon and search for those books.

What can I say?

I'm a sucker for an Archaeological Thriller, which leads me to point out that I'm trying to get familiar with the series, so I can start writing the first book in my Maximilian Nicholls thriller novels.

Yes, I want to write two types of thrillers at once.

Concluding ThoughtsNext week, I'll let you know about my progress on my short story The Lawn, my revision plans for the short story. And, my decision about whether will hire a professional editor and a professional beta reader for The Lawn.

Coming up in this show, I discuss how I hired a line editor and proofreader for my thriller novella, Missing, and my plans for book two. And, I've made progress with writing a short story which I intend to use as a lead magnet to build a mailing list.

But first, a short travel update.

I'm currently in San Francisco working from The Palace Hotel. The next few episodes of the Behind the Scenes Podcast Diary will be filmed and recorded in this location. On Friday, Roland and I flew premium economy with British Airways, and I do think the price difference between economy and premium is worth it, especially for a longer flight. The flight from London to San Francisco was ten hours. I'm not saying it flew by, but I think the seats and the extra legroom made all the difference.

Next week, I'll let you know about my progress on writing the short story and my revisions for book two, whether I will hire a professional editor for my short story. And, I'll share some pictures from my USA Trip.

It’s been one of those weeks. You know that week that starts of crappy and turns into a nightmare. But, the week eventually redeemed itself in the final hour. This is going to sound overdramatic, but I’ve got the opposite of the Midas touch. I’m sure there’s a name for that, but it’s completely escaped my mind. However, I’m going to keep this show rant free as much as humanly possible.

I had huge dreams for this week, commission a professional beta read, finish my revisions for Missing, and work on Smarter Goal Setting. And, on top of that, I had a weird experience with PayPal and a potential coaching client that I’m still scratching my head about. Just hearing that makes me want to laugh and cry all at once. For the sake of adding to this drama, I’m starting to get bored of working on Missing. There’s a part of me that needs to look at something different.

So, that’s what I got up to last week. I’m hoping in the next Behind the Scenes Podcast Diary which will be episode 020, that I will have finished the self-editing phase for Missing, submitted the story to a professional Beta Reader, and started revisions for Silence. And, received a quote from my line-editor and hopefully some good news in regards to whether my manuscript is ready for editing. Are you revising a story as well? I want to hear from you. I think accountability is a beautiful thing. And, I realise that’s a super nerdy thing to say. So, what do I mean by accountability? Basically, I’m referring to accountability, in terms of setting and striving towards writing goals. In this episode, I’m going to share with you my business and writing goals for the next quarter. As you can expect, I’m going to share an update on my successes and failures from the first quarter of 2019.

And, I’m going to discuss a new writing-related tool that I’m using to revise Missing. That tool is new to me but has been around for a while. This tool has evolved over time. As I’m using this tool, I’m watching the help videos, and I’ve noticed the version in the videos is slightly different from the version I’m currently using. It’s good to see the product has evolved over time, which is what you want when purchasing a piece of software.

It appears that I have a lot of tasks to complete over the next quarter. However, many of these tasks are larger goals broken down into tiny steps, just to make things a little easier for me. So, you’ve fleshed out your story idea for the first and second act using the Hero’s Journey, and now your story has reached the cusp between the second and third act. And, now, you’re wondering, how to structure the final act of your story using the Hero’s Journey. If this is a situation that you can relate to, then this episode is for you.

What to Expect from this EpisodeIn this show, I will unpack the final three stages of the Hero’s Journey. Just as a word of warning, I will also be sharing scenes from the film, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the ring. It goes without saying, spoiler alert.

As I wrote, what I was hoping to be the final instalment in this series, the word count reached 3,700 words which meant the show would reach almost 28 minutes. That length is well above the short length that I promised you in the earlier podcast episodes. I’ve decided to break this final episode into two parts and by default turning this mini-series into four parts. The next part of this series, episode twenty-eight will be released on Monday, April 8. And, the usual behind the Scenes Podcast Diary will be released the following Saturday, April 13.

A Podcast UpdateOver the next few weeks, you will notice a few changes in The Authorpreneur Podcast. The first is this episode is the second last show on plot and story structure for season one. Between season one and two, there will be weekly Behind the Scenes podcast Diary episodes. In season two the diary episodes will continue on in a weekly schedule.

On Monday, July 1 the first show of season two will be released. Season two will have a focus on how to outline, and in this season I will break down the components of a story. Closer to the start of season two, I will release an episode that breaks down exactly what you can expect from this second season, in greater detail. To be honest, I’m glad to get a break from the research, write, edit, and record cycle and focus on the new chat style format of the Behind the Scenes Podcast Diary. A lot of effort goes into creating a show like the one you are currently listening to, but, I digress.
