Do you find yourself thinking about your technique during matches? Constantly second-guessing your decisions? Feeling like your mind is racing every time the ball comes your way?
In this episode, Sandy and Tom explore one of the biggest challenges padel players face: overthinking on court.
They explain why overthinking isn't actually the real problem—and why the solution isn't simply trying to "clear your mind." Instead, they reveal how building better foundations through quality repetition allows your technique to become automatic, so you can focus on what really matters during a match: tactics and decision-making.
You'll learn:
If you've ever walked off court thinking, "I know what I should have done, but I just couldn't do it in the match," this episode will help you break that cycle and start playing with more confidence, clarity, and freedom.

It's built around a team that shares the same vision, values, and approach to player development.
In this episode, Sandy sits down with Ayden Rhodes, club manager at Coalition Padel to discuss what separates great coaching teams from average ones. The Padel School Johannesburg Academy is based at Coalition and this was filmed during a recent coach education trip with the team.
Whether you're a club owner, head coach, or part of a growing coaching team, this conversation is packed with practical insights on building a coaching environment where both players and coaches can thrive.
In this episode, you'll learn:
If you want to build a coaching programme that delivers consistent results and creates long-term success, this episode is for you.
Watching professional padel is entertaining, but are you actually learning from it?

Instead of focusing on the spectacular smashes and highlight-reel winners, you'll discover how the best players build points, make better decisions, move as a pair, and stay incredibly consistent under pressure.

Everyone wants a better smash, a sharper vibora, or a more aggressive game. But after watching and coaching players at every level—from beginners to professional tournaments—Sandy and Tom keep coming back to one shot that has the biggest impact on winning matches: the lob.
In this episode, they break down why the quality of your lob dictates who controls the net, why better players consistently hit deeper lobs, and how small improvements in depth and decision-making can transform your results. You'll also learn why many players hit lobs too short under pressure, how the pros find their range early in matches, and why training the lob should be a core part of every player's practice.
In this episode, you'll learn:
If you want to win more matches, spend less time defending, and take control of the court more often, this episode will change the way you think about the lob. 🎾

Padel is addictive… but that’s also part of the problem. 🎾

In this episode, Sandy and Tom break down:
✅ Why so many padel players get injured
✅ The importance of proper warm-ups and routines
✅ How technique and equipment affect your body
✅ When conditions become unsafe to play
✅ Common on-court safety mistakes players ignore
✅ Why shoes, balls, and rackets matter more than you think
If you want to stay healthy, play consistently, and enjoy padel long-term, this episode is essential listening.

In this episode, we break down why most players lose their matches in the first 10 minutes—and how to make sure you’re not one of them.
From rushing straight from work onto court, skipping warm-ups, lacking tactical clarity, or simply starting too slowly, many recreational players unknowingly sabotage their performance before the match has even properly begun. We explore how elite players, national competitors, and top-performing club players use pre-match routines to create consistency, confidence, and stronger starts.
We cover:
Whether you’re a club player, competitive amateur, or serious tournament player, this episode gives you a practical blueprint to improve consistency, reduce unforced errors, and start matches with a major advantage.

In this episode, we explore one of the most overlooked ways to accelerate your padel improvement: what you do off the court.
Many recreational players believe that simply playing more matches is the fastest path to getting better. While matches are important, they often only take players so far before bad habits, technical flaws, and performance plateaus begin to appear. We break down why relying solely on match play can actually slow long-term progress—and what players should be doing instead.
From footwork drills and ball control exercises to grip development, shadow movements, strength work, and structured routines, we discuss the practical off-court methods that can dramatically improve your on-court performance without constantly paying for additional court time.
We also explain how players can build smarter weekly routines, create better habits early in their journey, and use focused repetition to improve specific weaknesses more efficiently. Whether your goal is to increase your rating, compete more seriously, or simply become a more confident player, this episode gives you a blueprint for faster improvement.
If you feel stuck, frustrated, or like your progress has slowed, this conversation will show you why off-court training may be the missing piece in your development.

NEW IN THE PADEL SCHOOL:
Padel School Training & Match Journal
In this episode, we break down one of the most common mistakes players make when trying to improve: trying to fix too many things at once.
Instead of progressing, players often overload themselves with technical thoughts—especially on key shots like the bandeja—and end up executing none of them well. The real key? Simplifying your focus. We discuss why narrowing your attention to just one or two specific areas of a shot can accelerate your improvement and help you build real consistency.
We also explore how to identify what actually needs work using tools like video analysis, and how to turn that clarity into a structured practice plan. Whether you’re training with a coach, in a group session, or even at home, having a clear and focused intention behind your practice is what drives results.
Most importantly, we explain why just playing matches isn’t enough. If you want to truly improve your game, you need deliberate, focused practice—and this episode shows you exactly how to approach it.
In this episode, we dive into one of the biggest questions in racquet sports right now: is padel truly complementary to tennis… or is it quietly replacing it?
With more tennis clubs introducing padel courts, there’s a growing belief that the two sports can thrive side by side. But is that really what’s happening? Or are we seeing a shift, with players moving from tennis to padel rather than balancing both?
We explore how participation trends are changing, why padel is attracting both tennis players and complete beginners, and what this means for clubs, federations, and the future of both sports. From infrastructure challenges and court availability to the role of governing bodies and the rise of standalone padel clubs, we break down the key factors shaping the landscape.
We also look at global trends, comparing countries where padel is already surpassing tennis in participation, and discuss whether that could happen elsewhere in the coming years.
Whether you’re a tennis player, a padel enthusiast, or involved in running a club, this episode gives you a clear, honest look at where things are heading and what it means for the future of the game.

Why do so many players get stuck at the 3.5–4.0 level? In this episode, we break down the real reasons behind the plateau—and why simply playing more matches won’t fix it.
We explore how early improvement can be misleading, especially for players coming from other racket sports, and why missing fundamentals like footwork, preparation, and positioning eventually catch up with you. We also unpack the biggest misconception: that going back to basics means going backwards—when in reality, it’s the only way forward.
Plus, we share a clear action plan to help you break through: how to identify what’s actually holding you back, how to focus your training effectively, and why repetition and structured practice are key to long-term progress.
If you feel stuck in your game or want to avoid hitting that plateau altogether, this episode gives you the roadmap to keep improving.

Footwear is one of the most overlooked parts of padel—but it plays a huge role in both performance and injury prevention. In this episode, we break down what the pros do, from changing into court-specific shoes before stepping on court to choosing the right sole for modern surfaces.
We dive into the common mistakes we see at clubs especially players wearing running shoes—and explain why they’re simply not designed for the lateral movement, stopping, and turning that padel demands. It’s not just about playing better, it’s about protecting your ankles, knees, and overall movement on court.
We also cover what recreational players should actually look for in a shoe: stability, comfort, flexibility, and durability. Plus, simple habits that can make your shoes last longer and perform better over time.
If you’re serious about improving your game or just want to stay injury-free, this is one of the easiest upgrades you can make.

Are individual padel lessons really the best way to improve?
In this episode, Sandy and Tom break down the role of private coaching vs group sessions. While one-on-one lessons can be powerful for fixing specific technical issues—especially with video analysis—they explore why they’ve become so popular, and whether that’s always justified.
From the appeal of a “VIP” coaching experience to the realities of how clubs structure their sessions, they uncover how culture shapes what players believe they need. They also share why, in the right environment, high-quality group training can be just as effective—if not more so—for long-term improvement.

How much do rankings really mean in padel right now?
In this episode, Sandy and Tom explore the reality of rankings in a fast-growing sport. Unlike tennis, where rankings are well-established and clearly reflect level, padel is still evolving — and that creates a very different landscape.
They discuss why a top 50 ranking in the UK doesn’t always tell the full story, how players can climb quickly through tournaments and partnerships, and why this current phase presents a unique opportunity.
As the sport continues to grow, rankings will become more competitive and more accurate — but for now, there’s a window for players to make their move.

In this episode, Sandy and Tom explore one of the most overlooked aspects of padel: how conditions change the game.
From fast, hot tournaments like Riyadh to cold indoor clubs in the UK, the environment can dramatically affect tactics, shot selection, and decision-making. The discussion breaks down how professional players adapt during tournaments, why conditions can create unexpected upsets, and what recreational players should adjust in their own matches.
They cover the impact of temperature, wind, court type, and even ball condition, explaining why the same court can feel completely different from one day to the next. Whether you’re playing outdoors in the summer, indoors in winter, or on a damp court, understanding these changes can help you make smarter decisions and win more points.
If you want to improve your awareness on court and adapt your game more effectively, this episode will help you see padel from a whole new perspective.

Communication in padel isn’t optional — it’s tactical.
In this episode, we break down one of the simplest but most misunderstood parts of partnership: talking when your partner gets lobbed. When the ball goes over them, they can’t see what’s happening in front of the court — and that’s where you come in.
We explore how giving clear, calm information (“they’re both back,” “one’s closing,” “space crosscourt”) can completely change the quality of the next shot. This isn’t about shouting for the sake of it — it’s about providing useful information that helps your partner make better decisions under pressure.
If you want to become a better partner — and win more points as a team — this episode will change how you think about communication on court.

In this episode, we tackle a misconception that’s slowing down padel’s development in emerging countries: the belief that a great player automatically makes a great coach — or can build a successful academy.
We explore why playing level and coaching ability are two very different skill sets, and why structure, long-term programming, and volume matter far more than individual talent. As the sport grows, especially in newer markets, relying on the “best current player” to lead development can create short-term success but long-term limitations.
We break down what actually builds strong pathways, why emerging nations must think beyond their current top players, and how sustainable systems — not star names — create future champions.
If you care about the growth of padel in your country, this conversation is essential listening.

What happens when the call comes in?
In professional padel, partnerships can change overnight. One phone call from a top player — maybe even someone like Juan Lebrón — and suddenly everything shifts. Loyalty, results, ambition… it all gets tested.
In this episode, we unpack the reality behind “the call up.” How do players handle it when a bigger opportunity appears? What happens to the partner left behind? And how do you balance personal ambition with respect for the team that helped you succeed?
Using examples like Martín Di Nenno and Leo Augsburger, we explore the difficult decisions, the unseen conversations, and the ruthless side of climbing to the top.
Because in padel, one call can change everything.

Defence wins matches — even if it doesn’t make the highlight reel.
In this episode, we break down why becoming confident at the back of the court is one of the biggest game-changers in padel. From using the glass properly and slowing the ball down against fast hitters, to shifting your mindset from “win the point” to “earn the net,” we cover the practical and tactical steps that transform your defence.
We also dive into partner alignment, avoiding no man’s land, and why reps on the glass are non-negotiable if you want to level up.

What does patience really mean in padel?
In this episode, Sandy and Tom break down why the mindset that works in tennis often fails in padel — especially in tight moments. From rally length and risk vs reward, to active vs passive patience, they explain how top players build points, manage pressure, and make better decisions under stress.
You’ll learn why patience isn’t about pushing the ball in, how the lob becomes an anchor shot at every level, and how patience applies not just within points — but across matches and your entire padel journey.

When club players think about the off-season, they often picture hard fitness blocks, more power, and pushing their bodies to the limit. But is that really what recreational padel players need?
In this episode, we break down what the off-season actually looks like at the professional level — and how club players can apply the same principles in a smarter, more realistic way. We explore why injury prevention should be the number one priority for recreational players, how pros use short off-season windows to build strength and sharpen technique, and how concepts like periodization can work even if you only play once or twice a week.
We also share practical ideas on building mini training blocks, identifying your physical weak points, using video analysis to improve technique, and making small, consistent changes that lead to long-term progress. If you want to stay injury-free, train smarter, and set yourself up for a better year on court, this episode is for you.

In this episode, we unpack one of the biggest gaps between amateur and professional padel: how players actually train.
Fresh from Barcelona and a behind-the-scenes look at one of the highest-level finals ever played, Sandy shares what stood out most—not just the level in matches, but the detail and intention in how the pros prepare. From practicing individual shots to adapting to slow courts, we explore why training (not just matches) is where real improvement happens.
We also reflect on coaching trips to South Africa, the rise of new padel communities, and why so many club players plateau despite playing multiple times a week. The takeaway is simple but powerful: small, consistent training blocks can completely change your game.

Tom and Sandy discuss lessons from Premier Padel, including Tom's recent training session with Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger in Madrid!
In this episode, Sandy and Tom break down key lessons from Premier Padel tournaments and Tom's recent training sessions in Madrid with Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger! They explore why pros make fewer unforced errors, how they “find their range” early in matches, and why choosing the right shot matters more than perfect technique.
You’ll hear why drills beat match play for long-term improvement, why the lob is a true marker of level, and how elite players train by experimenting — not chasing perfection. In this episode, Sandy and Tom tackle one of the biggest questions tennis players ask when they discover padel: should you play both… or is it time to go all in?
Drawing from their own journeys — from Sandy switching overnight to Tom juggling pro tennis with Friday-night “pizza, beers and padel” sessions — they break down why dabbling only takes you so far, why the two sports aren’t as complementary as people think, and the common pitfalls tennis players hit when transitioning to padel.
They also dive into why match-only players plateau, why drills matter more than you realise, and how to avoid the early mistakes both of them made. Whether you're a tennis lover just trying padel, a club player chasing improvement, or someone thinking about competing seriously, this episode gives you the roadmap to commit with confidence.

Bad coaching can hold your game back — sometimes more than no coaching at all.

Knowing when (and how) to hit the bandeja or vibora can be the difference between holding the net or losing the point. In this episode, Tom and Sandy break down the key differences between the two shots, when to use each one, and how to adapt your overheads to conditions, opponents, and your own level.

We’re back with a new video podcast – this time, no couch and no fluff. In this episode, we catch you up on our recent trips with the Red Bull TV team, from Premier Padel at Roland Garros to the Reserve Cup in Marbella. Sandy reflects on how these events have evolved and what they reveal about the sport’s growth. But the big focus of today’s conversation is a question every player should ask themselves: how do you become the partner everyone wants to play with?
From the pros at the very top to players just starting out, adaptability on court is what makes the difference. Talent and power alone aren’t enough – if you can’t adjust, you’ll eventually get left behind.

It’s the golden question players ask us all the time — in clinics, on our platform, and even after matches: “Why have I stopped improving?”
The truth is, most players experience 6–9 months of steady progress before they hit the dreaded plateau. It’s frustrating, but it’s also avoidable.
In this episode, we break down the 3 T’s that hold players back:
✅ Technique – why good coaching (and the right kind) matters to break bad habits
✅ Tactics – how to truly understand positioning, patterns, and working with your partner
✅ Training – why only playing matches won’t get you better, and how to make practice count
We also share simple tools — like video analysis and mini-drills before matches — that make a huge difference to consistency and confidence.
Whether you’re just starting or already competing, this episode will give you clarity on what’s stopping your progress and the steps you need to keep climbing.

In this episode, Sandy and Tom are back together after busy weeks of training and travel — including Sandy’s three-week road trip across the US to explore padel in Charlotte, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. They dive into how the sport is developing in America, the challenges clubs face when they’re the only ones in their region, and what that means for the game’s growth.
From there, the discussion shifts to a big question: which racket sports give players the best foundation for padel? Drawing on examples from tennis, squash, pickleball, platform tennis, and even badminton, they break down how different skills transfer, the habits that help (or hurt), and which backgrounds allow players to adapt the fastest.
Whether you’re a tennis player curious about trying padel, a squash player wondering if your patience will pay off, or simply a fan of how racket sports connect, this conversation is full of insights, stories, and takeaways that apply to club players as much as aspiring pros.

A common theme last week in our clinics in South Africa was working with players to slow the speed of the ball down.
This is extremely difficult to do when the other players on the court hit so fast, but in this solo episode Sandy explains the best way to do that!
Another example of the glass being your friend in order to hit chiquitas and lobs! We highly recommend players get comfortable with the glass as early as possible and learn to control the speed of their padel to continue to improve.

Players start padel as a hobby for a bit of fun with their friends, but before they know it there is somebody they want to beat!
In this episode Sandy and Tom discuss why it is so important to get training as early as you can!
The majority of players that come to our clinics for their first instruction have been playing for a year or more without lessons! By that stage, as the coach, our main job is to start breaking down the bad habits!
It is so much easier to teach a new player good habits than to break the habits of a longer term "social player".

In this episode with Sandy & Tom, they discuss how they watch the Premier matches to get the most out of it as a player (as well as a spectator)!
We highly recommend players watch the professionals play and it is so easy now (and free) with Redbull TV app.
If you watch the pros carefully you can see the patterns of play they use and how well they move off the ball. It looks like they are lightning around the court, but much of that is anticipation and reading what it happening in the point. You can only start to get better at anticipation by watching how it should be done!

In this episode with Sandy and Tom, they discuss what makes a good coach and how different coaching can be depending on your skill level and needs.
Good players are not always good coaches, whether in padel or any sport. While being a skilled player gives a coach valuable insight into the technical and tactical aspects of the game, the ability to teach and guide others requires a distinct skill set.
'70% of coaching success comes from communication and emotional intelligence' (European Journal of Sport Science).
As a coach try to avoid coaching every player the same way you were taught or the way you play now! Each player needs a slightly different approach and to be treated as an individual.

In this episode we sit down with Nick Williams, Head of Coach Education for The Padel School, to discuss the transition from coaching tennis to padel.
The next generation of padel coaches will be made up of a large proportion of ex-tennis coaches. The sports are similar (while different) and so it makes sense many will come from tennis. But we discussed that as soon as coaches acknowledge there is a major difference between tennis and padel, they immediately get a better understanding of the game!
When it comes to the technique from tennis to padel, there can be some big changes and many that players do not consider from the beginning!
In this playlist we explain the major differences in terms of playing - Tennis to Padel Playlist

When a tennis player takes to the court there are often a few areas they are pretty good at, but there are also areas that often are more difficult...
In this episode, we are joined by Tom Farquharson who has recently gone through the conversion from tennis to padel. Tom and I discuss the advantages and disadvantages for tennis players, the transitioning process, as well as the growing/transfer pains.

This episode with one of our students is an interesting discussion about match preparation, communication and the difference between playing with a new partner vs playing with someone you know very well.
There are different levels to understand your partner on - it is not just understanding how they play shots, it is also their decision making, their personality, what motivates them and even their organization.

The players and Andreas put in some great training time and effort during the off-season and now all that work is starting to bear fruit. The players have had a very solid start to the season and are competing well against players that have been training in padel for over a decade.
In this episode we discuss what it takes for the Swedish pairs to come through at this level and the idea of "padel concept" or "padel IQ" - probably the most valuable attribute at the highest level!

Great to chat to Sven today from Otro Nivel (YouTube Channel) about how he started his padel journey, what he thinks is important for new players to learn and about how he recommends rackets.
Sven has spent many hours on court introducing padel to people and has started his own shop in Holland, specifically designed to bring more information to players wanting to choose a racket.

This episode we are talking to Richard Brooks, who was an excellent junior tennis player and moved to padel, quickly being able to compete in the Pro Padel Tour (the WPT at the time). Richard played for years on the WPT and many times for GB. He is a great person to have on your side of the court and also on your bench!
Richard suggests that playing both padel and tennis together is not a problem, and you can improve in both simultaneously...something I know many people need to hear!
With a huge experience as a player and coach, this episode he shares some of his top tips for both!

In this episode we speak to Asier, who has had an interesting journey taking him from his club in Spain, not speak a word of Japanese to coaching the national team in Tokyo.
I ask him about his padel background, how he found the job in Japan, the growth of padel there and how he is producing such amazing junior players!
Every country that has padel has Spanish coaches, so it is interesting to hear how a country with almost no Spanish expats is developing their padel with a Spanish coach!

This is a great episode for literally any padel player or coach. Manu is one of the best WPT coaches, currently coaching the top female pair (Ari Sanchez & Ale Salazar), and has a library of padel tutorial videos in Spanish on his YouTube Channel (@mejoratupadel).
In this interview we talk about how Manu got involved in padel and then coaching on the WPT. We discuss how to use strengths, weaknesses and what separates the players at the top level. Manu also tells us how his channel started and the hard work that goes into that!
We finish the episode with advice for competition players, as well as some suggestions for coaches to make sure they keep up to date.
This is a longer episode, but there was so much useful information it would've been a disservice to you if I cut any of it out!

In this solo episode I cover one of the most important tactics in the game, which is how to HOLD the net. Once you have managed to get to net, the key to winning the point is keeping this advantage as long as possible.
Players are often either: too aggressive as soon as they get to net, attacking any ball they can, OR are too tentative and do not take advantage of their court position.

Communication
When to Smash or Not
Moving As A Pair

This episode we are speaking to Sam who competed for GB in both the junior team and now the senior team. He is one of the few players that started padel at a young age and trained outside of Spain throughout his junior years (and speaks English)!
Now Sam is based in Spain to train and compete, playing his best padel!
We talk about how Sam started the game as a junior, the change moving from junior to senior game and what he recommends for juniors that are taking up the sport. If you are working with juniors or the parents of juniors that play, this will definitely be a good episode to listen to.

This advice should be considered at every level of the game. Whether it is something you can immediately bring into your competitive padel or something to practice and work towards.
