5 Steps to Getting Started with Progress Monitoring
Do you remember how much fun it was to learn about the solar system, plants or the states of matter? I can still remember doing experiments in my elementary classrooms, as well as learning about all these really cool, smart, brave people from history. Going home and telling my family about all of the interesting facts that I learned that day was actually pretty cool, and man did my friends and I love to one-up each other on our knowledge about facts we learned in school.
But, that isn’t the reality in classrooms anymore. The fact is that we spend almost all of our time focused on reading and math, and almost no time teaching about science or history/social studies. The fact is, it’s boring! Practicing a skill over and over again, but never having anything to show for it is incredibly frustrating, and I can only imagine how boring it is for kids to sit through day after day of skill practice when they never get to actually go home and say “Today, I learned something about____”
Today, we are going to talk about what we have been doing in schools in regards to reading and math skill focus, and what we COULD do to make school motivating again!

Special education teachers know that managing a caseload is a lot more than just tracking dates. It includes writing and teaching goals. Then, don’t forget to collect data on those goals! Special education teachers need to progress monitor the goals weekly. They also need to report the results to school personnel and parents. Side note-graphs make it easier to report, but that is often an additional step to take.

The last few episodes, we’ve been talking SMART goals….but not like what we hear in our professional development sessions.
In pd, we hear all about how SMART goals are the key to school improvement. Administrators and gurus focus on how this tool can be used to raise school grades, standardized test scores, and eventually improve student learning.
While all that sounds great, I respectfully disagree. SMART goals are most effective when we focus on the individual skill deficits that our students have, and filling in those gaps to make big gains.

It is almost 2022, and I really cannot believe it.
In full transparency, I have been SUPER MIA from the podcast and blog recently because, well…. As some of you know, my husband is in the military and in true military fashion, we got moved at THE most inconvenient time….aka the week before Christmas.
We found out a few months before, but all of that completely through me for a loop. Between moving, doing the full time job thing, and covering for a coworker who has been on sick leave since last October, I won’t say I was drowning, I already drowned.
But now, my family has moved, my kids are getting settled, and I’m excited to say that I will be allowed to work remotely for the next 6 months sooooo no more 45 minute commute in each direction means more time to devote to serving you and the students you worry most about.
All that to say….I’m back baby! And this year is going to be better than ever!

**The first few weeks of school are a wonderful, stressful time of the year. We get to know our new students, we get procedures and things all set up. Also, we test the students a whole lot. Wait...what? Yup, we know it’s coming...the first set of assessments for the school year. Those tests are used in our evaluations, and also help us figure out how to group our students and make plans for the year. When students read in class, do they struggle with pronouncing words correctly? I don’t mean articulation errors….as in the students have a really hard time saying s specific sound….I mean when they read words, do you know what word they mean, but they are putting too much or too little emphasis on certain pieces of the words? This can really mess with the fluidity of reading, and make a good story or piece of text terrible to listen to.
The first few months of hearing my older son read were such a mixture of pride and wanting to stick earplugs in while he read….seriously….there is a fluidity with the way that we pronounce words and sentences….without the fluidity, listening to someone reading is so ugh!
But, there is a way to help solve this problem...which enhances the listening experience for everyone….including the person reading...which directly impacts their comprehension...We will talk about this today!

How many times have you read a student’s writing and wondered where all the other words were? As in, connecting words were missing, or things like that. What about when looking at their writing and all the words are smooshed together with no spaces between words. Yes, part of these things could be due to other issues, such as a language impairment or poor handwriting. But another issue could be that the student is struggling with phonological awareness.
In today’s podcast, we are going to start talking about what may be the most basic part of phonological awareness: discriminating between words in sentences. It sounds so simple, but this really basic skill can make a big difference in later learning.

Kindergarten and first grade teachers know the pain with this skill set. A few months ago, this student was unable to sound out words. He was completely reliant on a word bank to communicate through writing anything other than basic sight words he had memorized. But not now! We’ve been working on segmenting phonemes in words, and it has made a world of difference for him and his ability to write!
It really is the little things that make teaching fun, isn’t it?

Phonemic Awareness Growing Bundle
Two years ago, I sat in an MTSS meeting with a wonderful kindergarten teacher who was working her tail off to teach her students how to read. Her class overall was pretty low coming into kindergarten, and a small group of these students, even after months of work, just could not seem to blend the letter sounds to make words. This poor teacher was in tears trying to figure out what else to do.

**There are so many students struggling in schools now. According to the NAEP only about 40% of students are reading on grade level in 4th or 8th grade. That means that students are overwhelmingly working below where they should be, which impacts their success both in school and after.
Today we are going to talk about why it is so important that we drill down to the most basic skill deficit and start there for remediation.

Trauma is a very real issue in classrooms today. It affects behavior management, classroom community, and the academics of students experiencing trauma. My Caseload Manager
IEPs, and paperwork, goals, and present levels, evaluations, and reports….special education teachers are buried in all the things they have to do….today, let’s talk about how to progress monitor IEP goals to make life easier when progress report time comes around.
One very time-consuming activity that we all have to deal with is finding ways to collect data on those goals that we have written. Progress Monitoring Resources
**When I went to college, and was preparing to become a teacher, I learned all sorts of things about teaching strategies and classroom management, and even the basic philosophy behind writing IEPs...but what they didn’t go into depth on was when I had students in my classroom, how was I supposed to teach the skills which were outlined in the IEPs...especially if they were years below the grade level the student was in with me.
Today, we are going to talk about how we can teach those skills the students need most in order to close achievement gaps….even when those skills are years below grade level.
The vast majority of our students with special needs are lacking or weak in foundational skills, which is impacting all more advanced learning. This is where our goals come from, and we will talk more about that in a future episode, but for now….let's talk about how we can teach those foundational skills, and close those achievement gaps...and find time to work on grade level skills at the same time…

2020 has been ridiculous, no one can or will argue that point. But some good has come from all of this….important conversations have been had on the national stage. Hopefully these conversations are the start to major change in the country and world. There is one conversation that has not been widely had, but I think is vital to the advancement of struggling learners.
Today, I want to discuss an important topic for struggling learners, and all learners in reality….the lack of research-based quality curriculum and the impact it is having on the learning in our education system in the United States.
Teachers are often expected to buy or create their own curriculum, and are given the responsibility to differentiate that curriculum….in addition to all of the other expectations and pressures placed upon them. The education system is using cop-outs to save money and it is negatively impacting teachers and students, especially those who are already at a disadvantage. The education system is only supporting about ⅓ of the students, and this needs to change. I discuss this and what we can do to change this situation in today’s podcast.

With all the crazy things going on in the world- COVID-19, quarantine and now killer hornets (is that not a thing of nightmares????) we are all feeling the stress. But as teachers, we are aware that the stress we feel is nothing compared to what many of our students have dealt with or are dealing with right now.
Today, I want to take a short break from progress monitoring and talk about a very real issue that teachers and students are struggling to deal with in this remote learning environment….trauma. This is a topic that hits close to home for me. It is not a comfortable topic for me, but I think that it is one that needs to be talked about, especially in today’s reality…..
Trauma impacts students and classrooms around the world. Students struggle to regulate their emotions and their outbursts can be downright dangerous. In this episode, we talk about actionable steps teachers can take to support students who have experienced trauma. I also introduce a way to continue to support these students, even if teachers are engaged in distance learning.

In Episode 4 of the Reaching Struggling Learners Podcast, we talked about RTI and Tier 1 and 2 interventions. In this episode, we expanded on what we talked about last week and moved into what makes Tier 3 interventions different and how to implement them in school setting. We discuss different ways that Tier 3 could be approached, and how teams arrive at moving a student to Tier 3.
Finally, we discuss what could happen if a student continues to be unsuccessful, despite Tier 3 interventions.
One major take-away from the episode is that RTI is not a path to special education, though some educators and parents may feel this way. Through the appropriate use of RTI, many students may be able to avoid being labeled as needing special education services.

I heard a great analogy several years ago about education and teaching, which has struck a nerve with me. I have come to realize that teaching is a great deal like building a house. Our students need a firm, well-built foundation, on which all later learning can be built.
In previous years, teaching was more tailored to the individual student, and while I value this individualization, I have no wish to go back to the one-room schoolhouse with 40 students! But, I do think that an in-depth analysis about why students struggle in school, and why this struggle snowballs as they move through the grade levels is needed.
In this episode, I discuss this analogy, give a silly example of what would happen if we treated construction of houses like we do the education of a student, and why I think progress monitoring and the RTI/MTSS process could be important in improving student outcomes in today's school environment.

I am Jessica Curtis (boy mom, veteran teacher in gen ed and sped, passionate about making sure every student is able to perform the basic skills needed to be successful after graduating high school, especially reading) of Everyday Teaching Adventures.
I started ETA because I like making things for my students and realized that many teachers were struggling to find resources which met the needs of struggling learners. So I started out by creating resources to help with this.
In working with high schoolers I saw how many students were graduating with low reading levels. So I changed my focus to helping struggling learners throughout the education system through providing materials, resources and support to teachers and parents through the RTI/MTSS process.
I am starting this podcast to help teachers and parents learn about the strategies they can use to help their children or students be successful.
