Tired of the typical jargon laden, elitist discussions about the design field of work, Rookie Designer set out to create a resource for all designers, young and old, experienced and non. The Rookie Designer Podcast, brings tips, techniques and discussion delivered in an easy-to-understand format.
Carl shares a situation that came up with his business and one that he talked with Jake about to get some advice. What to do when an estimate and an invoice from a vendor seem to be way off, even if it's in your favor. We are definitely curious to hear from our listeners on this topic. Jake and Carl talk about how it is to be a designer who sometimes is merely a tool for a client. This doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing but it is something a lot of designers struggle to deal with. As creatives we take a lot of pride in the creative work we do and it's important not to let those feeling get in the way of the relationships with clients. However, sometimes a client isn't the best fit and you have to be willing to address that. At the same time, sometimes you just have to be a tool for your client. During the latest episode of Rookie Designer Podcast, Carl and Jake talk about dealing with areas of design and business they aren't good at or knowledgable about. Carl shares a specific story about how he had to make a decision on how to deal with a client asking about a specific area of web design he isn't used to working in. Jake and Carl talk about the differences between pricing projects hourly and pricing projects on a per project basis. This is a very popular topic of debate and we came to an interesting conclusion. It lead me to believe that there is some new revelation in the book about how CSS code should be written, thus targeting avid users of the technology. After reading the book, I felt it was more a guide designed for those users who are NOT yet familiar with the ways of CSS. Deadlines are something that we all must deal with and that's not going to change anytime soon! They can be good though, for prioritization, motivation, and just plain getting stuff done. There is a conversation that should take place before the setting of these deadlines though, that can result in a smoother course of action, because let's face it, when deadlines don't get met problems and hard feeling are many times to follow. I have a personal example of a deadline that went wrong, and how i think this sort of thing can be remedied, including how to deal with the people involved so there are (hopefully) no hard feelings between you and the people you must continuously work with.
We're just getting back into the groove here after a 3 month hiatus. I'm going to try a shorter format with the podcast going forward and cut out the Keys to the Game and Rookie Mistake segments of the show to save myself some time and hopefully keep this this going for a while to come. What is Quality training? I got a dose of it recently at my full time job, and it wasn't half bad. Basically its a set of rules or guidelines that help facilitate a productive work environment. There are several things you probably do on a daily basis that are not exactly necessary, or perhaps could be done in a more efficient way to improve your workflow, and as a result, make you more productive. It also sets the stage for working and communicating with others in a way that benefits each party and the end result of your work.
