The League Scene is a weekly look at the NRL and the round. AJ Lucantonio will be joined by a panel of rotating mates to look at the games of the week, the latest news and looking at the Graham Annesley briefings before concluding with a bold prediction.
The History Corner will look at the significant events that shaped the game both today and historically from both a club and general standpoint. This podcast is a one stop shop for Rugby League historians and lovers.

AJ and Rhys review a fun and crazy week of rugby league. We had high scoring, high drama and all the tension of a game of Snakes and Ladders. They begin looking at the NSW side and AJ has a victory lap for his Connor Watson agenda. We review the back and forth Thursday night affair between the Phins and Sharks and see where Hammer’s individual try rates on the best we’ve seen. Friday saw wins for the Cowboys and Rabbitohs as Rhys questions the Broncos finals desire. We shift gears for our SUPER TANK BOWL between the Tigers and Titans as the Tigers get a famous win. They then delve into the Warriors forward woes and the Roosters big victory as we wonder how Kelma Tuliagi wasn’t sent off. Then Sunday saw a brave Manly win as well as Penrith skate by Newcastle. We look at the Lower Grade Report extensively while also awarding our LOLCOW of the Week.
AJ and Rhys review a dramatic round 14 of the NRL season. We review the post Origin I weekend of footy which kicked off in the ‘Gong on Friday where the Dragons inflicted a second half massacre on the Tigers as AJ slams Isaac Moses. Then Saturday saw Latrell fire against the hapless Titans, the Warriors inflicted further pain on the Cowboys and Brisbane’s bench exposed by one Royce Hunt stint. Sunday saw Newcastle fall short against Melbourne while a win for the Panthers over Manly as Left Wingers went bananas. Monday saw the Dogs of War return defeating Parra in a gritty and brave display. We review the Challenge Cup Final, our Supercoach, Round 14 of the NSW Cup and Round 13 of the QLD Cup !
AJ and Rhys recap the Origin matches this week. The men’s game was a highly contested affair with the QLD side running away with it against a 12 man NSW side after the Suaalii send off. The boys debate the tackle ! We also review the second women’s match played in horrible conditions but a high quality match between the sides saw QLD escape to force a decider thanks to Lauren Brown’s field goal.
Lots to uncover for AJ and Rhys this week. We look at Parra’s middles dominant win over Cronulla with Brendan Hands starting. Why does Reed Mahoney trigger Newcastle props? Liam Henry’s monster effort overshadowed by Jesse Marschke, Jordan Rapana the field goal kicker and AJ’s rant on why Michael Jennings should never play for the Roosters again. AJ and Rhys review a crazy Round 12 of the NRL season. Celebrating the great Indigenous athletes of our game and we saw some big wins to Canterbury, North Queensland, Manly, the Roosters (including a starring role by Naufahu Whyte). Penrith redeem themselves with a massacre of Cronulla, while Souths win for just the second time this year. Gold Coast upset the Broncos while the injury depleted Wahs put the Phins down. We look at the Lower Grade Report before an AJ Lucantonio exclusive, telling us what happens inside the NRL Bunker. Special thanks to Grant Atkins for making it happen.
AJ and Rhys review Magic Round. The boys look at the first women’s state of origin which saw the NSW Sky Blues taste victory. The boys then look at the NRL scene where we dissect weekend’s events. They then turn attention to the Lower Grade Report ahead of Origin time, some names will become familiar in the NRL sooner rather than later !!
AJ and Rhys have their hamstrings in tact (they’re available to an NRL club in need!) and are into review Round 10. Tight win for the Dolphins as we answer the Fuller Conundrum, we assess Penrith’s life without Cleary… AGAIN! As well as Canterbury’s continued improvement. Rhys is joyous at Brisbane’s big win over Parramatta and denies the Piakura slander. Super Saturday saw Bradman Best rocket into NSW’s vacant centre spot, the Dragons big win as Latrell has a mixed return and discuss the Dragons litmus test. The boys debate the Harry Grant sin bin as the Storm falter to Dan Atkinson and the Sharks. Sunday sees the searing Roosters put on a clinic against a depleted Wahs and the Titans battle hard to upset the Cowboys. The boys look at UK, NSW and QLD Cup as well as award LOLCOW of the Week and assess the carnage of Supercoach.
The boys are back to review a great week of footy. They look at all eight games as Penrith smash a depleted Souths side dealing with the dismissal of Jason Demteriou. We slam Manly’s collapse against the inexperienced Raiders, the Roosters big win over a depleted Brisbane. Super Saturday sees the boys slam some critical analysis on Kasey Badger on social media but still make valid points on her performance. Canterbury’s big comeback, Melbournes get out of jail win (plus Papi’s injury) and the QLD dual off. The boys conclude with wins in the wet for Newcastle and Cronulla. They review the Titans maiden win over a scratchy Warriors side, the Roosters massacre of the Dragons plus Melbourne’s tactical masterclass over Souths. Attention then turns to Maika Sivo’s brain snap that cost Parramatta glory over Manly. Rhys is happy as the Broncos turn on the entertainment but criticise execution in their win over the Tigers plus review Brian To’o’s record breaking tackle busting effort that guided Penrith home. They also review David Armstrong’s debut victory as the Knights skated by the Phins while Cronulla massacre Canberra at their own home ground. We address the Joey Manu news, Jack Hetherington’s brain snap in the tunnel and all the fun things that occured within our wonderful sport this week. We review comprehensively all EIGHT games of the weekend and look at our Lower Grade Report and SuperCoach.
AJ and Rhys review a big weekend of rugby league. Wins for the Roosters and Broncos means we’re in a jovial mood. We also look at problems for the losing coaches to contend with, as well as concerns for the Storm right edge, and Dolphins amid their injury crisis. We also look at the Challenge Cup quarters, Round 6 of the NSW Cup, Round 5 of the QLD Cup and Supercoach for the week that was.
AJ and Rhys debate a hot week of rugby league. The boys review the points fests which saw their sides lose, also the “Knight in Muddy Armour” as the Knights and Dragons play a slug fest. Saturday see Souths drop to another low against the Wahs, Manly ruffle the Penrith feather and the Dolphins outclass a Tigers side that saw both sides battered and bruised. Titans see AJ and Rhys go head to head about David Fifita’s involvement (or lack of) as AJ defends the Titans’ backrower. Also debate whether Brad Arthur and Mark O’Neill should remain in the roles they have as Parra drop to a low of their own. We review UK, NSW Cup and QLD Cup as well as the week in Super-Coach.
AJ and Rhys celebrate (late) Easter with a recap of the weekends action. We review the highly controversial obstruction rule in the wake of the Roosters loss but AJ doesn’t blame the loss on that. We review the rest of the weekend as well as UK Watch, the NSW Cup wrap and our LOLCOW of the Week.
AJ and Rhys review a special week of NRL where we embraced the many diverse cultures of which our game is based upon. The boys look at all 8 games, as well as raising some big questions at the Titans and South Sydney. They also look at 6th Round Challenge Cup results, as well as Round 3 of the NSW and QLD Cup. Before concluding with the LOLCOW of the Week and some trade advice for the week in Supercoach as price rises creep forward.

Sunday's slate saw AJ implode when the Roosters struggled to a 7 point loss to Manly while Dolphins feasted on the Dragons. We also debate the new tackling laws in England amid the drama it’s caused there and get thoughts from Johnny Lew.
AJ and Rhys return for a third season to recap the opening week of the NRL’s second pre season tournament. They look at the good, some bad and the rookies of each club that were on show. We also launch a brand new segment called UK Watch profiling the Super League and British game! Thanks to everyone for their continued support and we can’t wait for the journey that we’ll go on this season.
Today we have our biggest interview so far. AJ Lucantonio gets to sit down with the face of FOX League in Yvonne Sampson. They talk about her life, her rise from rural QLD to the face of rugby league on commercial and pay TV. We also talk about her love of horses, and what’s in store for 2024 on FOX including the trip to Vegas!!
We reminisce on some of the stories that she’s told as a journalist and some bold predictions ahead of 2024. It’s a massive interview as AJ turns the tables and goes face-to-face with Yvonne.
Today our one on one with AJ series returns with a bang. We go one on one with a dear friend of the show in FOX League’s Darcie McDonald. We talk her love of footy, how she went from cheerleading to media and from online to in front of the camera. Plus we look forward to 2024 by discussing rule changes and our passion, stars of the future.
In a special episode - AJ and Rhys analyse the unique parts of each squad on the program today. We look at the supplementary players (previously a development player) and the train and trial players at EVERY CLUB in 2024. It gives everyone something to look forward to outside the main top 30 in 2024. It also serves as a tool for fans to track players outside the squad and the NSW or QLD Cup as well as the relevant junior comps in each state.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Troy Dargan who tragically passed away late in 2023. He will be missed.
AJ and Rhys recap the international scene for the 2023 season in our final regular episode of the year. They recap all the big nations who played international football over the break and review their prospects.
AJ is joined by Roosters fans Pedro the Rooster and SEN Executive Producer Tom Costigan. The boys reviewed what was the most obscure year for the boys from Bondi. We talked about absolutely everything that went right, went wrong (Jason Ryles as an assistant) and anything else. AJ and Rhys recap the prelim finals which saw comprehensive wins for Penrith and Brisbane to book their place in the big dance. They also do the post mortems for Melbourne and New Zealand. They recap the NRLW finals, NSW Cup grand final and the PMXII matches from a big weekend of rugby league.
AJ is joined from the UK by Johnny Lew the host of the Rambling Saint podcast to discuss the state of rugby league in both countries. I’ve invited Johnny on the program because we’ve often discussed Super League and felt a bit overwhelmed due to the lack of it we watch with time-zones. So it’s important to look at the game from both angles in Australia and the UK. We discuss the impending IMG changes, the Super League season itself, the new broadcast deal & a look ahead to the Super League finals. Johnny will turn the tables on AJ dissecting immediately the Storm v Roosters game and discuss his thoughts on the transfer of players from Super League to the NRL. Including the infamous signing of Jordan Tansey in 2009.
AJ and Rhys advance through the second week of the finals. We analyse both matches and look at the big picture ahead of the preliminary finals. The boys also analyse the final round of the NRLW season and look to the finals. They then look at the NSW Cup prelim and the QLD Cup GF. Before, they conclude with the LOLCOW of the Week.
AJ and Rhys recap a dramatic opening week of the NRL finals. The boys weigh up Brisbane's strong defensive output against the Storm holding them to 0 for the first time since the Storm entered the competition in 1998. Also, we sympathise with Melbourne on their loss and horror injury run which included the disastrous injury to full-back Ryan Papenhuyzen (we send our love). The boys turn attention to Penrith's strong win over the Wahs before criticising the broadcasters for focusing too much on Nathan Cleary and give some well deserved praise to others within the squad who deserve the praise they missed out on. We look at the Warriors demise and end the Dylan Walker halves shift, it's not working guys.
AJ is jubilant after the Chooks narrow away win to Bob the Builder's home (sorry Shark Park). He gives a praise to those that had to change positions due to the horror injury run and Tedesco's sin-bin. Rhys soon gets AJ on track and gives the Sharks' a post-mortem and tells their fans on what their club needs to do moving beyond their failure of a season. They soon turn to Newcastle to recap and epic 10 try elimination final which went right down to the wire and the 5 minute extra-time period. Newcastle escape with a controversial late penalty and Canberra's fortunate appearance comes to an end.
The boys recap Round 8 of the NRLW, the second week of the NSW Cup finals and the third week of the QLD Cup finals series before concluding with our LOLCOW of the Week award.
AJ and Rhys recap the final round of the 2023 NRL Telstra Premiership as the 17 teams turn into the last 8. We look at all the finals teams' chances. Plus we give the post-mortems for the sides that find their seasons coming to a premature end.

AJ goes one on one with a rugby league icon. Ian Roberts had a respectable 12-year career in rugby league playing across South Sydney, Manly and North Queensland. Roberts was a hitman with a powerful reputation that left the opposition scared to run the ball at him, playing at a state level 11 times for NSW. He also played well as a national level representing his country 14 times including on the 1994 Kangaroo Tour. In 1995, Roberts came out as the first openly gay player and has since become a spokesperson for the LGBTQIA+ community in the years that followed his rugby league career. Since retiring, Roberts has starred as a successful actor in multiple movies and TV series.

A break from our usual traditional weekly recap sees AJ secure an exclusive interview for the podcast. Talking to one of his favourite players, cult hero Mose Masoe. Mose made his first grade debut in 2010 and played with 2 NRL clubs in the Roosters and Panthers, he also played in the Super League with St Helens and Hull KR. Masoe also represented Samoa on a number of occasions. His career took a turn for the worse in the early stages of 2020, a tackle that went horrifically wrong saw Masoe be told his career would be over and unlikely to walk again. He set out defying the odds and is now well on his road to recovery. This is the story of the 'Iron Man' Mose Masoe. A huge thanks to Will Bates for helping us secure this exclusive!

Sunday’s triple header saw wins for AJ and Rhys’ heritage countries in Italy and Ireland over Scotland and World Cup new boys Jamaica. Plus the Kiwi’s got past Lebanon in a match marred by Adam Doueihi’s send off. As well as the long awaited debut of Greece at the World Cup and they were by far the entertainers. Tonga and PNG dual it out which shows how far PNG has come in the last few years. As well as Wales pushing the Cook Islands all the way. We also have to chat about Des Hasler’s departure from Manly today too.

We’ll also look at the new issue affecting the game, the cannonball tackle and what can the NRL do to cut the tackle out of the game. A lot of work went into this and the lockdown enabled me to get out an episode before I undergo my HSC Trials and HSC.
