Sin. The idea no one likes. We either mock the idea of sin through commercials encouraging us to indulge in sin (Eat that extra piece of chocolate!) – or – sin is named as an abusive idea. What could be worse than telling someone they are a sinner? That there is something wrong with them?

What if our discomfort with sin is because we have misunderstood what the idea actually is? What is – belief in sin – actually set us free? What if this idea was the key to unlocking a new and joy-filled life.

Join us as we spend the next several weeks unpacking – the surprising freedom of belief in sin.

That should make any curious person interesting in asking – Who was Jesus of Nazareth? What was it about Jesus – that made people from all over the world, from all backgrounds – find their deepest longings met in Him?

The person who most altered the course of human history is without question Jesus of Nazareth. Within a few generations of his life and death, millions of humans throughout the world worshipped Him as a god. The movement he started soon included people of all ethnicities, rich and poor, slave and free. They found in Jesus rest from their anxiety, hope for their fears, and comfort from their pain.

There are many of us – where we come in with a different ability, our child has a different ability, a human life that might carry with it a different ability – and this morning is about naming that as a church. We want to be a place where all people are welcome.

But often times that isn’t the case. Sometimes – because we do not know how to respond to people who are different than us – we don’t know what to do, what to say, how to be present – so let’s talk about that this morning. I just want to reflect on two things this morning – the ministry of Jesus to people of all abilities…your ministry to people of all abilities…

Weary. Worn-out. Burdened. Tired. Few words better capture our age of hurry, which makes the offer of Jesus in Matthew 11 one tailored for our age. Come to me…Jesus says…and you will find rest for your souls.

Rest for my soul. I will take that, but this where things get confusing. Jesus’ offer for rest does not come with a pillow, a five step self-help plan, or the perfect app to download. To have rest, we have to take up – His yoke? A yoke is symbol of work. Physical exhaustion. Jesus says His yoke is easy, but how can He in the same breath call us to take up a yoke, and promise rest for our souls?

We are going to spend 12 weeks together exploring that tension. Exploring how to trade in our weariness for rest. Exchange our hurry for peace. Learning what it is to live a life of grace. Feeling what it is like to live a life with a lighter burden.

Join us as we become students of Jesus, and take up His easy yoke.

How honest can we be with God?

Ever since the Garden of Eden, we have been answering this question with our words and our life. Sometimes we hide from God and use our words to off-shore our problems and our shames to everyone around us. We come to church and we use sanitized words that masks our true nature. Our words are pious but they tend to keep everyone, including God at a safe distance away. We portray an honest facade, but inside we are filled with death and hypocrisy!

This is where the Psalms come in.  But the Psalms are the most honest and intense words that the Bible has. The honesty and vulnerability found in the Psalms is in sharp contrast to the usual moral platitudes we find in church. The Psalms teach us how to speak to God with real gritty honesty.

There are six passages in Scripture which touch on the issue of homosexuality and condemn same-sex relationships. And yet some claim they do not. So what does the Bible really say? With a deep understanding of Hebrew, Greek, contextual issues, and biblical exegesis, Dr. Christopher Yuan presents and analyzes the gay-affirming interpretations of these Old Testament and New Testament passages with clarity and compassion.

Hear a powerful testimony from Dr. Christopher Yuan as he articulates a biblical view of sexuality through the narrative of his personal transformation from an agnostic gay man to born-again believer and a professor at Moody Bible Institute. Not only does God turn his unbelief into belief, but God also freed him from the bondage of drugs and promiscuity. This inspirational story of redemption and grace transcends the topic of sexual identity touching on issues such as drug addiction, promiscuity, incarceration, and HIV.

Dr. Yuan's message of redemption is one that points to our Heavenly Father who is calling all of us prodigals to run to Him. Christopher casts a compelling vision of not embracing our sexuality, but embracing Christ, thus shattering the paradigms of gay and straight and pointing us toward the biblical standard of holy sexuality.

There are two camps: nature (biological) and nurture (environmental). Both claim to be right with science to back them up. With his background in the health sciences, Dr. Christopher Yuan reviews the scientific studies but more importantly, helps to show how causation and sexuality are better understood in light of biblical anthropology.

As we grapple to wrap our minds around sexual identity, transgenderism has taken many by surprise. Is gender a social construct? Dr. Christopher Yuan explains pertinent terminology and categories as the first step to better understand gender identity.

One of the most important things missed when engaging with our LGB friends is how sexuality has become the core of our being. “Being gay” means “This is who I am.” But if this is incorrect, how does the Bible communicate who we are? Dr. Yuan articulates the correct understanding of personhood through the lens of Scripture.

Forgiving Forward is helping people experience the freedom of the Gospel through the power of forgiveness. We believe forgiveness is a core message the church is to communicate to the world and that unforgiveness is one of the most significant blockages to an individual's growth and fruitfulness, thereby affecting the church as a whole. Unforgiveness is the source of most personal, church, and societal conflicts. We have seen and experienced the torment that refusing to forgive brings and the peace and freedom that comes when forgiveness is given.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Ephesians 3:20-21
